Room Spotlight: The Tuesday Room

Each week, we feature one of The Belfry Inne's unique rooms. Complete with pictures, fun facts, and extra travel tips, our Room Spotlights are designed to help you find the perfect room for your Cape Cod getaway- and to also serve as a medium for showing off to your friends.

This week, we're touring another room in The Abbey: The Belfry's most iconic building. If you don't know already, The Abbey is a church that has been completely renovated with a gourmet restaurant downstairs and seven luxury guest rooms upstairs.

Each of The Abbey's rooms is named for one of the six days of creation from the Book of Genesis and The Tuesday Room is inspired by "The Division of Sky and Water." This is one of the most favorited rooms at the Belfry, so let's get right into it!

The Tuesday Room definitely knows how to make an entrance. While the Abbey is filled with all sorts of stained glass, the biggest and most elaborate stained glass window in the entire building is right here. It looks amazing with the summer sunlight gleaming through, but it looks even more stunning under a full moon. The colors in the glass create a gentle glow that serves as the most ornate night light you've ever had in your life.

While we're still on the subject of lights and windows, I should mention that the unique and classic beauty doesn't end at the stained glass. The Tuesday Room has a high, vaulted ceiling complete with TWO skylights, ceiling fan, and a gorgeous cathedral-style hanging lamp. So whether you need a little extra light to relax in bed with a book, or if you want to glance at the stars through the skylight, we've got you covered.

I know I talk about this in every room spotlight, but it's still so important! EVERY room in The Abbey has its own private deck complete with two patio chairs and a small table. This is a feature you won't find at just any other B&B, so take full advantage of it.

Sure, the deck is perfect for warm summer nights, but if it gets a bit chillier (fall is right around the corner!), what's better than curling up next to the fire with a cup of tea? Even during those torrential summer thunderstorms, there's nothing cozier than spending a night in with someone you love.

One of my favorite things about the Belfry is the attention to detail. Every room is furnished with one-of-a-kind pieces that tie in perfectly with the attitude and aura of the room. The Tuesday Room is no exception with this beautiful, blue, vintage-inspired lamp and the rustic, antique armoire.

And last, but not least, we just have to talk about the bathroom. At the Belfry, we pride ourselves on providing only the best in relaxation. Thanks to the Ultra Bain air jet tub in the Tuesday Room's bathroom, you can relax and rejuvenate in what will probably be the best hotel tub you've ever had the pleasure of staying in. Room Spotlight: The Monday Room

One thing the Belfry prides itself on is its unique, one-of-a-kind rooms our guests remember forever. Each room has a theme, a message, and something that makes it stand out, so instead of giving you the basic "one-size-fits-all" approach, we'll be dedicating an in-depth look to one room per week. This week, we're all about the Abbey's Monday Room.

If you don't know already, each room in The Abbey is based on one of the 7 Days of Creation from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament- but don't worry, that's about as religious as it gets. We know you're on vacation and probably don't want to feel like "The Man Upstairs" is watching everything you do.

The Monday Room has a "Let There be Light" theme. While the rest of the Abbey has a dark, bold, feel to it, the Monday Room is definitely a breath of lighter, fresher air. If you love the Abbey, but stained glass isn't your thing, you will love this room. The church pew, king-size bed will make you literally feel like you're laying on the clouds.

If you look up, you'll find an amazingly enlightening skylight that's perfect for those sun-kissed mornings or those starry nights. There's also a ceiling fan if you'd prefer a steady, cool breeze instead of an air conditioner.

One of the most unique features of the room is the rustic flying buttress support beams that lead the way to the bathroom. Left over from the original church design, these fixtures will give you the feeling that you're actually "up in the rafters" where the best light always seeps in.

And just like all of our other rooms at The Abbey, you have your own, private deck complete with two patio chairs and a beautiful sundial table. So whether you want to catch some rays without hitting the beach, or enjoy a late-night drink with some friends, this is one feature of the room that should definitely not be ignored.

I know I mentioned the flying buttress details leading UP to the bathroom earlier, but never the actual bathroom itself. It offers everything you'd expect from the Belfry: a clean, relaxed environment complete with an Ultra Bain air jet tub that can fit up to two people comfortably. No need to hit up the public pool for your hot tub/air jet needs, you have your own private jacuzzi in your room!

3 Ways to Stay Active in Cape Cod while Vacationing

Staying in shape is probably the last thing on your mind when you finally get to laying on the beach, chowing down on a Belfry Bistro sandwich, seeing one of your favorite artists perform live in concert, or doing anything relaxing, but it will definitely be on your mind when you check the scale when you get home.

Thanks to the beautiful climate and pristine climate of Cape Cod, there are plenty of ways to stay active while still having fun during your getaway- especially if you're staying with us in the Sandwich, MA area.

1. The Tour de Cape Cod

Biking isn't just for super-fit men in tight, one-piece suits like Lance Armstrong. We all learned how to ride one (hopefully- if not, you might want to grab a pair of training wheels) at some point in our lives, and even if you haven't pedaled in quite some time, it's easy to start back up.

There are plenty of safe, exciting places for you and your whole family to bike: along the Sandwich Boardwalk, through the historic downtown streets, or even along the Cape Cod Canal. Either bring your own set of wheels, or go ahead and rent a bike from Ecotourz or Cape Cod Bike Rental.

2. Play Explorer

Even though the pilgrims and early colonial settlers may have beat us to the New England discovery bragging rights, that shouldn't stop you from exploring all that nature has to offer. Cape Cod is filled with amazingly beautiful nature trails, hiking paths, and beaches that are perfect for people of all ages.

If you don't know where to start, we highly recommend the Shawme State Forest, the Scusset Beach State Reservation, or the Murkwood Conservation Area. The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce has a detailed list of all the best hiking spots if you feel like taking a day trip to somewhere else.

3. Way Bigger than an Olympic Swimming Pool

Let's face it, the Atlantic Ocean is basically the elephant in the room here. Not only is swimming one of the most effective ways to work your entire body while still staying cool, it works as a medium for so many types of water activites!

Kayaking, canoeing, diving, jet skiing, tubing, boating, fishing- the possibilities never end. While the Belfry Inne may not have the signature, Chlorine-ridden indoor hotel pool, we figured you'd probably want something a little more authentic.

For over 20 years, Twin Acres has kept people of all ages happy and cool with its amazingly delicious menu and country charm. Neil Diamond doesn't lie. Sweet Caroline's will have you singing "so good! so good!" after every bite- and not only does it taste good, but thanks to their connections with charities such as Dancing for a Cure, the Dana Farber Institute, and the Challenger Club, you can DO good by buying a scoop or two. Their menu offers all your favorite flavors like Rocky Road and Oreo, or switch it up and order one of their speciality Strawberry Shortcake Sundaes or Extra Thick Frappes. Room Spotlight: The Friday Room

The Friday Room is named for "The Creation of all Living Things" and apparently "living things" includes angels because the entire room's color scheme revolves around a gorgeous stained glass window portraying the Angel Gabriel.

The maroon and gold hues of the glass are the main colors in the room, as reflected in the walls and furnishings. FUN FACT: The walls may seem like they are evenly star-covered, but there is one star missing! Bonus points if you can find the missing star during your stay!

Just like all the rooms at The Abbey, the Friday Room has a private deck complete with two patio chairs and small table- perfect for having a night-cap under the stars or enjoying an early-morning cup of coffee. It brings in a lot of extra light and gives you that personal outdoor space that most B&Bs cannot offer.

One of the best things about the Friday Room is that there is no lack of comfort. Complete with a Victornian-style couch, two leather sitting chairs, and a King-size bed (with a church pew headboard), the room is cozy and able to entertain guests comfortably. Then again, you can only entertain others if you haven't passed out into one of the greastest naps of your life.

And even though heat is probably the last thing on your mind right now with all these scorching days we've been having lately, the Friday room has a rustic fireplace that's perfect for when it starts to get chilly out. Not to mention, there's even more stained glass above the mantel.

And last, but not least: the bathroom. One thing you definitely won't find in any of The Abbey's rooms is your basic, 3x3 stand-up shower. Each room has a large spa tub and the Friday Room's Ultra Bain tub has air jets and enough room for two to fit comfortably. Remember, you're on vacation! Now is not the time for speedy showers. Relax, rejuvenate, and let it all go.

Yankee Magazine Names Chatham #9 Beach Town in New England

As if you needed another reason to take some time off to visit Cape Cod, Yankee Magazine published an interesting countdown in its July/August 2012 edition: The 25 Best Beach Towns in New England.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the area, New England includes the entire coastlines of Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and even as far down as the bay of Connecticut, so with hundreds of beaches lining the shores, it's quite an accomplishment to make the cut.

3 Reasons Why YOU Need to go on a Cape Cod Whale Watch

Whales.

We know they exist and we know they're Earth's largest mammals, but how often do we get to see them? Not very often (unless you take frequent trips to SeaWorld). Lucky for you, Cape Cod is home to native, REAL whales that you can get up close and personal with WITHOUT hopping on a plane to Florida.

Not so sure if it's worth it? Consider the following:

1. Your goldfish is not a whale.

Let's get real: when's the last time you've actually seen marine life (pet stores don't count!)? Even if you've visited the New England Aquarium lately, there's just something exciting about seeing live, untamed wildlife. Oh, and just so we're clear, Humpback Whales are about 4 times the size of Shamu- and I'm only talking about a small one.

2. Everyone loves boats.

Well, not someone who's just watched "Titanic," but mostly everyone. Even if you don't happen to catch too many whales while out on your journey, a trip to Stellwagon Bank on a big fishing boat is something that everyone in your family can enjoy, so no need to worry about keeping the "so bored" crowd happy.

3. It's cheaper than a day at the Aquarium.

We all love to see wildlife, but zoos and marine parks can get expensive. Thankfully, whalewatches average out at about $30 per adult and $20 per child. Plus, most allow children 6 and under to ride for free! Check out the local tourist information centers (or the front desk of the Belfry) for admission coupons! Imagine: you can do something fun and STILL have money leftover for a nice dinner!

This has got to be one of the most interesting courses you'll ever play. The former home of the Barnstable Fairgrounds has been converted into a state-of-the-art, 18-hole course (hence the name) and will "have you using every club in your bag," or so it likes to brag. The main clubhouse is actually a renovated barn from the fairgrounds and has a full service bar/restuarant inside- perfect for relaxing after the game and collecting your winnings.

The Dennis Pines - Dennis, MA (30 mins. from Sandwich)

The Pines is a gorgeous course complete with waterfront views and amazing florals. Although it's been rated as one of the toughest layouts on Cape Cod, it could be the perfect fix if you're up for a challenge. The Village House: The Belfry's Hidden Gem

When most people think of the Belfry Inne, they think of The Abbey or the Painted Lady (depending on your favorite), but what you may not know is that there's a third building that bears the Belfry name: The Village House.

Built in 1830, the Village House has all the classic charm, elegance, and character the Belfry has to offer at a price that won't burn a hold in your pocket.

THE PORCH

Call me old fashioned, but I love sitting the feeling of just sitting on a front porch, while people watching, enjoying a drink with friends, or taking in one of my favorite books. The Village House's covered porch is perfect for taking a break from your fun-filled Cape Cod getaway and just observing the scenery.

THE PARLOR

"Lobbies" are for commercial hotels and airport terminals. The Village House has a gorgeous, cozy parlor complete with a fireplace and plenty of room to share a friendly conversation with another guest or just warm up during a New England storm.

THE ROOMS

If you've stayed in one of our other Belfry buildings, you're used to the unique, one-of-a-kind rooms we have to offer. While you won't find any stained glass or bright pink paint in the Village House, you'll find classic, clean rooms with just a splash of character to make your trip that much more memorable.

The Village House is also the most practical choice for families. Averaging at about $185 per night, it's our most cost-efficient building. In addition, some of the rooms contain two twin beds (instead of the usual Queen size) which is perfect if you're travelling with children. No more trying to cram everyone into a giant King mattress- get them their own room instead!

How to Find the Perfect Cape Cod Bed & Breakfast

Let's be honest: there are hundreds of B&B's to choose from when planning your Cape Cod getaway. Each one is so different and has so much to offer, so it can definitely get a big overwhelming. So how do you know which B&B is right for you and your family? How do you avoid those inns that just don't seem to work out?

Don't worry, I've got you covered.

1. Is it really a B&B?

When it comes to lodging option on the Cape, there are all kinds of places to choose from: hotels, motels, inns, B&Bs, guest houses- you name it. While it might be easy to assume they're all the same, there are reasons why they all prefer to use different names.

Hotels/Motels: Personal space, private bathroom, no curfews, no set rules, no meals included, corporate feeling

Inns/B&Bs: Personal space, private OR shared bathroom (depending on specific inn/B&B), some minor courtesy rules (leave some doors locked after a certain time, stuff like that), breakfast included, feeling of "home"

Guest Houses: Personal room, shared bathroom, lots of house rules/curfews, "mom'n'pop" feel

It's important to consider your own habits and behaviors before booking a stay. Check in with the innkeeper no matter where you stay to know house rules and policies up front before signing on the dotted line.

2. Do the rooms fit your lifestyle?

If you're used to 5-star suites and private indoor swimming pools during your vacations, you should know up front that Cape Cod inns and B&Bs are usually very old-fashioned and do not have the modern-day, 21st century ammenities. Since so many of the B&Bs are in old houses (or if you're at the Belfry, an old cathedral), the rooms are small and each one is different. Make sure to consider the following:

Is the room big enough for my entire family? How many beds are there? Is an adjoining room available for extra space?
Does it have a private bathroom? How many sinks and showers are there? Are there any spa facilities?
Is the inn close to the attractions I want to visit? Will I have to factor in extra travel costs?

3. What will you eat?!

While it's a given that your average B&B will offer a complimentary breakfast, it's always a good idea to double check to see what dining options are available- especially if it doesn't state specificially that it's a B&B.

Ask yourself:

Is there a restaurant attached? What are the room service hours?
If no, what restaurants/grocery stores are in the area?

Be proactive and ask questions when planning your Cape Cod vacation! Don't let desperate innkeepers talk you up and let you buy into something you don't want.

Lions, tigers, and SHARKS! Oh, My!

It seems as though fewer and fewer people have been catching the waves at Cape Cod beaches this summer due to sightings of Great White Sharks in the area. What might be bad news for someone just trying to cool off in the ocean could be exciting news for those of you looking to spice up your typical Cape Cod getaway.

So what's bringing all the sharks here anyway? Local marine biologists claim it's due to the explosion of the seal population in the area as well as the sudden spike in water temperatures. Sharks are somewhat nomadic and follow their prey without any real sense of direction.

So far, most of the sightings have occurred off the coast of Chatham, MA which just happens to be a quick drive from Sandwich! So instead of doing the usual musems and shopping travel routine, take your family on a shark hunt! Even if you don't get to see a Great White, your kids will love playing "explorer" and learning new things.

Or you can take the expedition one step further and go on a whale watch! You never know what will be hanging out at Stellwagon Bank, so get a seat on the boat, bring your camera, and expect to get closer to exotic marine life than ever before.

And once you've returned from a long day of shark hunting, your clean, comfortable room at the Belfry will be waiting for you.

One attraction that is definitely a must-see when staying in Sandwich is the Heritage Museums and Gardens. Each year, the museum hosts new, exciting exhibitions that provide fun for the whole family. Check out some of this year's exhibits:

Hidden Hollow

What kid doesn't love a treehouse? As one of New England's first certified Nature Exploration Classrooms, the Hidden Hollow area is a giant interactive adventure through nature that your kids will love. There's a full schedule of games and activities everyday, and hey, maybe you'll learn something new this vacation!

Normal Rockwell: Beyond the Easel

Normal Rockewell's art is an American treasure that we've all come to know and love. The Heritage Museum's exhibit features Rockwell's most notable works of art as well as an in-depth look at the photography that inspired his pieces and the process he used to create them. With more than 150 works featured at this exhibit, there's a lot to see and learn.

World Class Antique Auto Collection

We all have a "car guy" in our family, but even if you're not big into them, the Heritage Museum's Antique Automobile collection is a definite must-see. With classics on display like a 1909 Steam Car and a 1919 Model T Ford, you'll be amazed to see how far technology has come. Some of the cars were even owned by famous celebrities!

American Art and Carousel Gallery

While you browse through one of the best collections of American Folk Art in the country, your kids can ride on the 100-year-old antique, hand-carved carousel. Endless rides are included with admission, so you should take a spin as well!

The Grounds

The Heritage Gardens host Southern New England's Largest Public Garden. Aside from the impressive collection of plants, shrubs, and trees native to Cape Cod, they are also hosting the 2012 Whimsical Garden Gates exhibition. This is a must-see for all you "Green Thumbs" out there.

When most people think "wine tasting," they think of a gathering of pretentious people sipping on some mediocre wines while making small talk.

At the Belfry Bistro, we like to redefine wine tastings and make them something you actually want to attend- not just something your significant other guilted you into or something you do out of pure boredom.

So here's why we think you should ditch your normal Wednesday night routine (which, by the way, you don't have one), and stop by the Belfry for a drink with us instead.

1. You don't have anything else going on.

As I said before, our tastings are on Wednesdays which means they're the perfect opportunity to relax and take a breather before you continue on with the rest of your workweek. We won't interfere with your weekend plans (unless you decide to come back for dinner on Saturday night...) nor will we keep you out too late.

2. Our wine selections beat the local bar's by far.

We feature four new, refreshing wines each week. You won't see any grocery store brands here- only carefully hand picked selections that you'll definitely miss when dining somewhere else. In the past we've featured selections from vineyards all over the country, and sometimes we even have the winemaker stop by for the tasting!

3. Making friends is fun, right?

Tastings at the Belfry are not your typical awkward get togethers, so there's no small-talk necessary. Feel free to either stick by your party or branch out and meet some new people. Top 5 4th of July Fireworks Shows on Cape Cod!

There's just something about mini explosives lighting up the sky that we all just can't get enough of during the summer. Thanks to all the salty beaches and quiet ponds, Cape Cod is filled with some of the best fireworks-viewing locations in New England.

1. Falmouth - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 30 minutes from Sandwich!)

Find a spot near the gorgeous Falmouth Heights beach and tune your car radio (or iPod) to 92.7FM to hear the music that accompanies the show!

2. Hyannis - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 20 minutes from Sandwich!)

Head down to one of the many beaches around Hyannis Harbor, grab a bite to eat at one of the area's many shops and restaurants, or bring a late dessert to enjoy while watching the sky light up.

3. Martha's Vineyard - 7/4 at 9:00PM

If you find yourself on the Vineyard for the 4th, head to Edgartown to check out their amazingly patriotic fireworks display. It might seem like a stretch, but remember, it's only a short ferry ride away!

4. Plymouth - 7/4 at 9:00PM (only 25 minutes from Sandwich!)

Even though Plymouth isn't technically "down the Cape," it's pretty close and hosts some of the best fireworks in the area. I mean, it doesn't get more patriotic than Plymouth: one of the first colonies in America, right? So head on up there and find a spot anywhere near the Plymouth Waterfront.

5. Onset-Wareham - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 20 minutes from Sandwich!)

Onset has always had that old-fasioned feel to its beaches and atmosphere, so it's a pretty sure bet that the fireworks display will be just as timeless and classic. Head out to the Onset Beach/Bay area to check it out.

When it comes to planning your wedding, things can definitely get a bit stressful. Whether you're planning every little detail down to the tablecloth cover or taking a laissez-faire attitude and leaving everything to the last minute, it can be a hectic time. Here at the Belfry Inne and Bistro, we want to make your wedding as stress-free as possible, so we've broken down the event planning process into three easy steps:

1. Picking a Ceremony Venue

One of the best parts of planning your Cape Cod wedding is just that: the location. The Cape is filled with a variety of possible event venues. From beaches to parks to hotels, the possibilities are really endless. When choosing a ceremony venue, it's important to consider these factors:

Size: Is the venue big enough to hold all your guests? Or, if you're planning a small, intimate ceremony, is it too big? Be sure to consider guest seating, bridal party positions, and aisle length.
Weather: Does the venue require a sunny, rain-free day to work properly? If so, do you have an alternate rain location picked out?
Driving distance: Is the venue within reasonable driving distance for your guests and bridal party? Is their adequate parking on-site, and if not, will there be reliable group transportation?

The Belfry is only a short driving distance from a variety of beaches, churches, hotels, and event halls. So whatever you choose, the Belfry is always a convenient reception option.

2. Picking a Reception Venue

While we obviously HIGHLY recommend booking your wedding or event in the beautiful Belfry Inne and Bistro, we ultimately leave the decision up to you. Be sure to consider the following when choosing a reception location:

Menu options: Does the venue offer the food you want at a price that works for you? If not, do you have a catering company picked out instead? In terms of beverages, do you want an open or cash bar?
Size: Are there enough tables for all your guests? Is there room to dance? Is there adequate parking?
Does the venue have a romantic feel- or at least the "feel" you're going for? How do you feel about the decor?
