Things to Do in Cape Cod

When you’ve had enough of sun and shopping, Cape Cod day trips can be exciting and fun activities for the whole family.

This is an area that is bustling with activity.

Jump on a bike or get in your car, starting anywhere on Main Street and head for the harbor. At Ocean and South Street you will look out over a busy harbor with working boats among sleeker craft and a wide choice of water Cape Cod attractions. Wander the waterfront and walk on Channel St. to the privately owned (and for sale) Lewis Bay Lighthouse, then back to Ocean Street and south to the Kennedy Memorial and Kalmus Park and Beach.

Biking is generally the best way to see this area, but if you follow the numbers on this map you’ll pass some spectacular homes and ocean vistas. And you are always within a few minutes of the shops and restaurants along Main Street.

Hop in the car and drive north on Route 132 to Route 6-A, turn right, or east, and drive through the rest of the northside villages . Things To Do In Cape Cod

Celebrating Summer

This June 21, 2012 is, of course, the first day of summer. Now though, this inaugural day of summer is also the date of the annual Cape Cod Quahog Day.

Cape Cod Quahog Day is a festival held on the Quahog Republic lawn, at the Quahog Republic Eatery on Mashnee Island in Bourne. The festivities get under way with the “Quahog Prognostication” which is an announcement made by the Secretary General of Quahog Republic, as received from the official quahog, as to how many weeks of beach weather the Cape will see this summer.

Quahog Fun

The fun continues with several activities on the lawn that the whole family can enjoy. Events include a clambake preparation ritual, clam shucking demonstrations, live music, children’s activities, and several contests. Attendees will also have the opportunity to compete to become the first ever Ms. Quahog, Boss Hog or Mister and Miss Littleneck.

Entrance to the event is free to the public. Food and drinks will be sold at the restaurant and, for $37/person, you can attend the 6 pm clam bake which includes 1/4 boiled lobster, fresh steamers, linguica sausage, potatoes and corn.

When you add this event to the Father’s Day festivities, including an auto show and Chowder Festival, in downtown Hyannis, June 21st becomes a day of Cape Cod vacation fun you won’t want to miss.

Things To See Cape Cod

From late spring to summer, especially during June, its a great time for seal watching on the Cape.

Where To Go Seal Watching On Cape Cod

Along the shoals of Chatham, Massachusetts, from the North beach break to Monomoy, you can spend a fun filled afternoon watching from hundreds to thousands of seals basking in the warm sun of the Cape Cod coast.

During high tide the seals position themselves above jetties along these shores so that when the tide goes out they can spend the afternoon resting in the sun without having to worry about dragging their massive bellies across dry ground. Left undisturbed, they then sit on the shores awaiting high tide to come back in. During this time you can often expect to find between 1,500 and 2,000 seals, on any given afternoon, lounging on the shores of Monomoy Island.

What To Look For

Harbor seals, which are usually five to six feet long and have contrasting grey, black or brown spots, are the most common seals to be found in the area but the larger and rarer seven to eight foot long brown or silver grey seals, with their elongated heads and Roman noses, can be seen as well. Both species offer a sight seeing experience that you and your family are sure to remember for years to come.

A few business in the Chatham area even offer seal watching tours where you can board a boat and cruise the Chatham Harbor waterways spotting the seals along the coast and frolicking in the open waters. You can find daily trips during the summer, some for around $30.

The arboretum was then established as a not-for-profit institution in 1997 and has since worked to cultivate, study and preserve its magic and tranquil landscape.

An arboretum is technically defined as a scientific collection of tress and shrubs, and the collection at Polly Hill is centered around broadening the range of plants that can be cultivated on the island and to introduce and preserve ornamental plants and those threatened by extinction. Its primary focus is on the flora of Martha’s Vineyard, the Atlantic Coastal Plains, and eastern Asia.

4. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary – Wellfleet Bay is an 1,100 acre wildlife sanctuary that consists of a nature center, scenic trails and a beautiful butterfly and hummingbird garden. The varied landscape of salt marsh, pine forest, beach front, freshwater pond, and heathland attract many different types of wildlife. In all there are five miles of trails winding through the diverse habitats that provide refuge for several varieties of song and shore birds.
5. Cahoon Museum of American Art – Housed in a colonial building constructed in 1775, the Cahoon Museum of American Art is a stately showplace for an impressive collection of 19th, 20th and 21st century American art. Featuring works from artists such as Williams Bradford, John Francis Murphy, Ralph Blakelock and John Joseph Enneking, as well as the folk paintings of Cape Cod’s own Ralph and Martha Cahoon, the Cahoon Museum enjoys a lofty reputation as one of America’s treasure house museums of American art.
