Stop by for a range of interesting salads and freshly-squeezed juices. No preservatives or artificial flavourings are used.

Crush
Raw, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.

Dear Me
Whether you’re celiac, diabetic, lactose- or wheat-intolerant, vegetarian or vegan, Dear Me will have an option for you. (Chef Vanessa Marx is diabetic, so healthy eating is close to her heart.) Check out the Dear Me Pantry for gluten- and sucrose-free treats.

Lola’s
Everything at Lola’s is prepared on the premises – even down to the tomato sauce and the chicken stock – so you know they’re free of nasty chemicals. Meals are light and fresh, with plenty of vegetarian options, and the kitchen is happy to accommodate requests for vegan meals or those with food intolerances.

Kirstenbosch Tea Room
A large variety of interesting salads and dairy-, egg-, gluten- and sucrose-free options are detailed on the menu. You can also ask for free-range eggs (R6 extra).

The Kitchen
Salads here are an event in themselves, so you won’t feel that you’re missing out by eating veg. There’s also something particularly wholesome about the community feeling in Karen Dudley’s store.

Kwalapa
Ingredients are organic where possible and free-range. There are vegan and gluten- and wheat-free options, as well as a raw food platter. We hear there are also plans to start a raw food buffet in February.

Maharajah Pure Vegetarian Foods
Around 90% of this vegetarian menu is also vegan, and there are wheat- and dairy-free options available. Most of the ingredients used are low-fat, and the cream is fat-free.

Organic at Heart
This restaurant focuses on organic and ethical dining and features a beautiful 100% organic veggie garden which produces much of the veggies used in salads and other dishes. The menu offers raw food, vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as meat and chicken - all free range and organic wherever possible. They also cater for those with special dietary needs with gluten free and sugar free alternatives.

Tibetan Teahouse
Maryna Kruger focuses on mindful eating. The menu is about 90% vegan, with 10% of dishes vegetarian. There are plenty of gluten-, wheat- and egg-free options. Ingredients are organic as far as possible, and there is a wide range of organic teas and coffees.

Osumo (Cavendish, Canal Walk and Sea Point)
This small chain focuses on natural food, and there are plenty of low-cal options, from salads to wraps. Eggs and chicken are free-range, and the restaurant makes allowances for lactose, dairy, wheat and sugar intolerances. The menu also indicates which dishes are fat-free, high protein, vegetarian, or contain superfoods.

Sababa
Choose from a wide selection of fresh salads and vegetarian options, prepared daily. Breakfast and lunch only.

Tortilla Modern Mexican
Order healthy, preservative- and MSG-free fast food. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

Body Worlds and the Cycle of Life Exhibition informs the visitor about anatomy, physiology and health by viewing real human bodies.

The specimens on display were preserved through Plastination, the preservation process invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, while he was working as an anatomist at the University of Heidelberg.

Since the beginning of the exhibition series in Japan in 1995, more than 35 million visitors in over 70 cities in Asia, Europe and America have seen the world’s most successful special exhibition so far.

Ingredients: 1 cup flour, 1 Tbs bicarbonate of soda, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 Tbs apricot jam, 1 Tbs vinegar, 1 Tbs melted butter, 1 cup milk.

For the sauce: ½ cup cream, ½ cup milk, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup hot water, ½ cup butter,

Method: Set oven at 180°C. Grease, with butter an ovenproof glass or porcelain container approximately 30cm X 20cm X 5cm. Do not use an aluminium, enamel or any metal container.
Cut a piece of aluminium foil to cover it while the pudding is in the oven and grease it well with butter on one side.

Sift the flour and the bicarb into a bowl and stir in the sugar.
In another bowl beat the egg very well and add the remaining ingredients [excluding those for the sauce] one by one, beating well between each addition.

Using a wooden spoon beat the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, cover with the foil, greased side down and bake for 45 minutes in the present oven until well risen and brown and for a further five minutes without the foil if not sufficiently brown. If not sufficiently baked the dessert will not take up all the sauce making it stodgy inside.

When the pudding is almost done, heat the ingredients for the sauce, ensuring that you melt all the sugar and butter. When the pudding is done, remove from the oven, take off the foil and pour over the sauce. The pudding will take up all the sauce.

Serve hot, warm or at room temperature, though warm is best, with a little thin cream or a vanilla custard.

Searching for Sugar Man is a recently released documentary about the 1970’s American singer Sixto Jesus Rodriguez, who sold more records in South Africa than did the Rolling Stones at that time.

It tells the story of the search by two South Africans and their chance find of Rodriguez, against the backdrop of beautiful (if very Seventies) filming of Cape Town’s icons, including Table Mountain, Camps Bay, Lion’s Head, the city centre, Signal Hill, and the ocean road alongside the Twelve Apostles.

Stephen Sugar Segerman from Cape Town was intrigued by the success of Rodriguez in South Africa, having sold 500000 records locally but appearing to not have made it internationally.

He wondered what had happened to Rodriguez, having heard a rumour that the singer had committed suicide.

At the same time journalist Craig Bartholomew Strydom from Johannesburg was intrigued by the same question, and in the 1990’s he launched an investigation, to find out more about Rodriquez.

What you need (feeds 4)

1.5 kg pork spare ribs
½ cup honey (or golden syrup)
½ cup tomato sauce
1 tot apple juice
½ tot soy sauce
½ tot paprika
What to do

1. Prepare the sauce: Mix all the ingredients (except for the ribs) together in a bowl. If there is anything else you wish to add to the sauce, do so.

2. Braai the whole spare ribs over medium heat for 30 minutes until almost done.

3. Remove the ribs from the fire and place on a cutting board. Cut into single ribs.

4. Toss the ribs into the sauce bowl and coat them well. Use a spoon and/or shake the bowl around. Leave for a minute or three so that the exposed, meaty parts of the ribs can bond with and absorb the sauce.

5. Braai the now generously basted ribs for between 2 and 10 minutes until all the sauce is warm and glazed. If during the cutting you saw that the ribs are basically done and will start to dry out, just braai them for a minute or two until the sauce is glazed, but if you saw they still have a way to go, make it closer to 10 minutes or even longer, also exposing the two recently cut sides of each rib to heat by letting them face the coals.

Honey adds a unique flavour to this recipe but you could also substitute golden syrup.
