Area native Arsha Jones founded the Capital City brand to try to broaden interest in the sauce — a curious amalgamation of barbecue, buffalo, and sweet-and-sour flavors — outside of the city’s carry-out joints.

What a weekend. It was one thing to watch a couple of D.C. legends on the movie screen talk about their home town. It was another to see many of them together in the same place again. A little grayer, a little slower and a lot wiser. “I hardly recognized you without the hair!” I heard from multiple people, catching up with old friends and acquaintances. Some brought their kids and many broke out their old leathers. The three-day extravaganza

There’s a new exhibit coming to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC. It’s called ‘Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980s‘ and it chronicles the life and times of Washington, DC from 1980-1992.

From the Corcoran:

Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980s is the first exhibition to explore the thriving underground of Washington, D.C., during the 1980s, giving visual form to the raucous energy of graffiti, Go-Go music, and a world-renowned punk and hardcore scene.

The exhibition explores the visual culture of the “other D.C.,” demonstrating its place in the history of street art as well as that of America’s capital city. In the midst of notorious problems with drugs and corruption, D.C. gave birth to an infectious visual culture captured in the exhibition through posters, graffiti, graphic art, archival photographs, and ephemera. Pump Me Up tells a local history from a local point of view, while providing a framework for the contemporary surge of interest in street art and underground graphics. Read More

The show is curated by Roger Gastman who began writing graffiti as a teenager in Bethesda, Maryland. Since then, he has founded and published the pop culture magazines While You Were Sleeping and Swindle, with Shepard Fairey, and authored a dozen graffiti art books including The History of American Graffiti (with Caleb Neelon; 2011).

What’s a conversation about the subculture of Washington, DC during the 80′s without a little mumbo sauce? Our bottles will be available in the Corcoran gift shop, starting next week, until the show ends.

This show coincides with the showing of his new film titled, ‘The Legend of Cool Disco Dan‘, premiering on Feb. 23 rd.

Arsha Jones and her husband Charles are natives of the D.C. area. Growing up, Mumbo Sauce was a part of who they were. They moved to Annapolis after having kids, but were no longer able to find the sauce. Arsha would make the sauce for the kids and they loved it. One day she had a light bulb moment and said, “I wonder if I could bottle this and sell it?”

After being featured by the Washington Post and subsequently receiving thousands of orders, they realized that this could be something big. And it is well on its way to being just that!

Arsha was gracious enough to talk about the origins of Mumbo Sauce, responding to the media exposure of their company, overcoming trials in business and her 30 second sales pitch to a major distributor.

From their website:

The Super Bowl isn’t only advertisers’ greatest moment of excess; many of will be spending a lot of money this Sunday. According to a survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, for example, the average game watcher will spend $68.54 on new TVs for viewing parties, snacks, decor and athletic apparel, up from $63.87 last year. And total Super Bowl spending is expected to reach nearly $12.3 billion. That made us curious about how much traditional Big Game fare will be getting gobbled on game day and where the rest of this money is going. So we rounded up a few stats. What will you be eating and drinking? Did you buy anything special just for the game? Let us know in the comments.

So let me tell you all about this good ole mumbo sauce from Capital City Mumbo, that was sent to us for a review. First of all Ms. Arsha Jones, the owner of Capital City Mumbo Sauce, approached us for “an honest review” of their product; however, the word “honest” was not needed. Both of their sauces, Original and Sweet Hot, are amazingly good and they live up to a great representation of D.C.’s famous Mumbo Sauce.

After confirming with Arsha, she immediately sent us bottles of the sauce which arrived within the next two days. The shipping of the product was fast and very practical for the product’s packaging. Upon opening the product, I observed its packaging first. The labeling makes the product look sleek and acceptable to leave out on your counter. The bottle itself is….PLASTIC. This caught me by surprise, but it was the best news ever! The shape of the bottle along with its material make-up allowed for quick and easy use of the product.

The consistency and taste of the sauces is a mix between a “barbecue sauce and an Asian sweet-and-sour sauce” with an added twang. Being the health nut that I am, after falling in love with a sample tasting of the product I had to observe its’ nutrition facts. I was delighted to see that Capital City’s Mumbo Sauce has only 43 calories, 177mg of sodium, 11grams of sugar and ALL pronounceable ingredients! Needless to say, I’ve been putting it on EVERYTHING from the classic chicken&french fry combo, to burgers, and shrimp with vegetables. This product is a must for anyone who desires zest up any dish.
