Plunging into icy waters is an age-old tradition here in Lake George. On Saturday, November 16, 2013, that tradition continues at Shepard Park Beach with the Special Olympics Lake George Polar Plunge

PLEASE NOTE: This is a separate event from the annual New Years Day Polar Plunge Swim in Lake George

Freezin'...For What Reason?!

Hundreds of people take the plunge each year in Lake George and at different locations around the state to raise funds for the Special Olympics New York. These daring participants help by showing their support for the Special Olympics and raising money for the organization.
Many form teams and have fun with it. The goal is to get friends, family, colleagues and other donors to sponsor your plunge, ultimately raising thousands of dollars to help the Special Olympics reach their fundraising goal, which this year is the $1 million mark.
And a few...incentives, for those hesitant to dip their toes in the water. If a participant raises $100 to take the Plunge they'll receive an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt - and more incentives for higher fund-raising levels!

Philip Andre "Mickey" Rourke, Jr. (born September 16, 1952) is an American actor, screenwriter and retired boxer, who has appeared primarily as a leading man in action, drama, and thriller films.

During the 1980s, Rourke starred in Diner, Rumble Fish, and the erotic drama 9½ Weeks, and received critical praise for his work in Barfly and Angel Heart. In 1991, Rourke, who had trained as a boxer in his early years, left acting and became a professional boxer for a period. He had supporting roles in several later films, including The Rainmaker, Buffalo '66, The Pledge, Get Carter, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Man on Fire.

4) John Sayles-Writer For Lonestar

A bright child, John Sayles began reading novels before age 9. A Williams grad in 1972, he shunned a corporate career to work various blue-collar jobs, moving to east Boston to take a factory job. He wrote stories and submitted them to various magazines, and the Atlantic Monthly gave him the idea of publishing them in a novel--thus "Pride of the Bimbos" (1975) was born.

In the late 1970s he worked for renowned low-budget producer Roger Corman as a screenwriter. He saved much of the money he earned from that job, got some friends together and made Return of the Secaucus Seven (1979) in 25 days. Altough it was a hit, he had trouble obtaining financing for the films he wanted to make because he would not give up his right of final cut. Baby It's You (1983) was Sayles' only film made under studio control.

In 1983 the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship granted him a tax-free income of $32,000 a year for 5 years. Born upstate New York to a set of French/Ukrainian parents, Michelle was hailed a performer just seconds after leaving the womb. Michael caught the acting bug after moving to South Florida in 1986, and working as an actor on various films like "Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise" (1987) and several episodes of: "Miami Vice" (1987).

After studying acting in different classes and workshops between Florida and Los Angeles, he moved to NYC to pursue a more formal education/training, enrolling in the Filmmaking program at New York University. Born and raised in Schenectady, New York Anthony holds an MA in Directing from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (RADA). He won NCAA Division II heavyweight wrestling championships in 1978 and 1979 and won the Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1984 after battling back from cancer.
As a commentator, Blatnick worked UFC 4 through UFC 32 for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He also served as the UFC commissioner and was instrumental in helping the UFC get regulated by the athletic commissions, which kept the sport of mixed martial arts alive during its Dark Ages.

11) Maureen Stapleton - Troy

Stapleton was born Lois Maureen Stapleton in Troy, New York, the daughter of Irene (née Walsh) and John P. Stapleton, and grew up in a strict Irish American Catholic family. Her film career was a huge success, being raised in Troy gave her a great sense of family growing up.

12) Shirley Muldowney - Schenectady

Professionally as "Cha Cha" and the "First Lady of Drag Racing", is a pioneer in professional auto racing. She was the first woman to receive a license from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to drive a Top Fuel dragster. She won the NHRA Top Fuel championship in 1977, 1980 and 1982, becoming the first person to win two and three Top Fuel titles.She has won a total of 18 NHRA national events.

13) Johnny Podres - Glens Falls

American left-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who spent most of his career with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He is perhaps best remembered for being named the Most Valuable Player of the 1955 World Series, pitching a shutout in Game 7 against the New York Yankees to help bring the Dodgers their only World Series title in Brooklyn before their move to Los Angeles after the 1957 season.

14) Martha Quinn - Albany

Quinn was born in Albany, New York, the daughter of Nina Pattison, a retirement counselor, and David Quinn, an attorney. Prior to joining MTV, Quinn graduated from Ossining High School in 1977 and NYU in 1981.

15) Jimmy Fallon - Saugerties

American comedian, actor, singer, musician and television host. He currently hosts Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a late-night talk show that airs on NBC. Prior to that he appeared in several films, and was best known as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1998 to 2004. On April 3, 2013, NBC announced that Fallon would replace Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show at the conclusion of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

16) Mickey Rourke - Schenectady

During the 1980s, Rourke starred in Diner, Rumble Fish, and the erotic drama 9½ Weeks, and received critical praise for his work in Barfly and Angel Heart. In 1991, Rourke, who had trained as a boxer in his early years, left acting and became a professional boxer for a time. He had supporting roles in several later films, including The Rainmaker, Buffalo '66, The Pledge, Get Carter, Spun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Man on Fire.

The Buffalo Sabres, a professional ice hockey team based in Buffalo, New York, along with the Vancouver Canucks, joined the NHL in the 1970-71 season. They are members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).The Sabres' first owners were Seymour and Northrup Knox, scions of a family long prominent in Western New York. The team's name was chosen using a fan contest. The Knoxes had tried twice before to get an NHL team, first when the NHL expanded in 1967, and then unsuccessfully attempting to buy the Oakland Seals with the intent of moving them to Buffalo. At the time of their creation, the Buffalo Sabres exercised their option to create their own AHL farm team, the Cincinnati Swords.

The Sabres, playing their first of many seasons at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, got off to a good start despite being disputed by the Vancouver Canucks, and by spinning a "Roulette wheel", won the NHL draft lottery, and picked future Hockey Hall of Fame center Gilbert Perreault first overall in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. Perreault was available to the Sabres, being the first year that the Montreal Canadiens did not have a priority right to draft Quebecois junior players. Perreault scored 38 goals in 1970-71, at the time a record for most goals scored by a rookie in the NHL, and was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year. Despite Perreault's star play, the Sabres did not make the playoffs.
