In addition, there are new colors available for several models. Trikke T12 riders- be aware that in the new future this model will be getting new color schemes. Here's all the news as we know it:

Price Drops:

T78 CS previously $249.99 is now $219.99 and is available only in BLACK

T78 Air previously $299.99 is now $259.99 and available only in BLUE

T78 Deluxe previously $369.99 is now $299.00

The T8 Air previously $499.99 is now $459.99

Product Changes:

The Current T12 colors are being changed. So, what is on hand as stock will be sold and the new colors will be rolled into inventory. No date as of yet for this new inventory. The new T12 colors will be white, blue, red, and graphite (grayish black?). This seems odd and we hope they'll still maintain the classic black and copper. What we can tell for sure is that the metallic green is definitely retired for the T12. Twelves might be hard to come by again as on hand stock is depleted.

No more brown T8 's

The T67's are now convertible to all air with upgrades. They will be available only in blue and orange. No more silver.

The T5's are now available in red, black, orange, blue, and pink.

All this as we head into the holidays means the chance of low stock and favorite items being hard to find. Of course we suggest that if you're thinking of getting a trikke you start early! Please visit our website for links and product info. We are after all, a handlebar nation and we intuitively “get” the notion of the handlebar. We then teach people how to best use their Trikke handlebars (see this video).

What’s pretty common in new riders is the question of what to do with their legs. The Trikke has such a mystical quality and experienced riders seem to not be doing anything at all to make it move. And hey... I know it sounds simple. It's a scooter right? Just push right? Nope!

The thing to remember with legs is that Trikkers sweep out and forward, plus lean with their hips and legs to gain forward momentum. In contrast, cyclists peddle backwards---Roller skaters push back and out to the side.

Trikkers need forward momentum. We drive the Trikke forward with the combo of upper and lower body. Although we can focus on just the upper body to pull us forward using Trikke techniques, it’s the legs that provide the biggest motor. If you have no lower body physical limitations, it’s a good idea to develop the strength and technique to use your legs to their full potential.

When working on the legs, practice this exercise off the Trikke:

Pretend you are holding your handlebars. Overall, don’t move your upper body.

Stand still and take your right leg and sweep it forward in a half circle motion, paying attention to the foot. Drag it forward with a nice strong, slow rhythm and flex the calf out to point your foot and toes as you come to the top of the half circle. Do nothing with the opposite leg or upper body--focus on this leg for now. This is your sweeping motion

Repeat with the left leg.

Now, when you’re comfortable with this motion and have good balance and strength doing it --add the lean--(very important because with balance, you’re strengthening your core as well!). When you sweep whichever leg you’re working on, lean and place your weight on the opposite leg. You will feel the strength needed for this but when on the Trikke it won’t feel as intense because of the low to no impact of Trikke riding.

This is what you want to translate onto the Trikke, and build balance and strength doing this. What this motion does when you’re on the Trikke, is that your sweeping leg gives you driving momentum forward while the leaning leg is harnessing that momentum for the next sweep on that leg. Then you rock the leaning leg into sweeping position and it becomes the next driver. Obviously when on the Trikke, you don’t lift your leg off the foot platform--you keep your foot firm on the platform, at most raising up on your toes to create this motion with your body. You will feel the Trikke capture this energy and move forward better. Do it with rhythm and depending on the surface you can do it slightly or with more force for an approaching incline. Now… repeat for 20 miles!

The sweep and lean in connection with the upper body movements will build forward momentum and help you travel up slight inclines as you get stronger and adept at doing this. Careful with your balance! Don’t lean backwards and keep your center of gravity forward on the Trikke. Pure hill climbing requires some added technique engaging even more upper and lower body strength and technique. But that’s another conversation!

Check the video posted above and watch us ride the Trikke T12. This sweeping and leaning motion is demonstrated in some close shots here. You'll see both a slower version, and one more aggressive to demonstrate how to prepare for incline speed. How often can you really say that?

Come on….Get on a TRIKKE and get Fit!

Frequently asked questions about the Trikke….and we do mean frequently asked!

How do I ride a Trikke?

Think of riding a Trikke a little bit skiing…a little bit inline skating. The Trikke moves with the very subtle forward motion of your body that comes at the same time as you’re turning your front wheel to gain momentum. Add to that a smooth side to side, lean and you’re swerving in no time. If you ever see us out showing people how we ride you’re likely to see one of us off the Trikke running beside people almost dancing to show the glide of the Trikke. That and singing “Good Vibrations.” Don’t laugh. It helps more than you know!

Do I have to push and kick it all the time to keep going?

Once you learn proper Trikke riding techniques you shouldn’t have to get off the Trikke to start from a dead stop. It’s about momentum and harnessing that into forward momentum with your body and riding technique. Because of this you shouldn’t have to push or kick off on the Trikke repeatedly. Remember, you are at least 8 inches off the ground. A repetitive downstep to kick off can be very painful and lead to Achilles tendon bruising and injury. Getting technique down should have you either starting firmly planted on your Trikke or with one slight push off. With technique and conditioning you should be able to ride for longer and longer periods without putting your feet down.

Won’t I fall off of it?

There are two sure fire ways to fall off your Trikke: Putting all of your weight to the rear of the foot platforms and leaning back will pull you backwards into a wheelie. Not good. Second, if you turn your front wheel too sharply to the right or left, the forward motion will be halted and the Trikke will skip and you will fall off. As with any rolling vehicle, if you hit curbs, ditches, holes etc., you risk falling. However, if you are aware of these risks, wear safety equipment such as helmet and gloves, and “learn before you burn,” you should be fine. The 3 wheeled Trikke with breaks on both rear wheels is actually very stable!

I have a knee injury, will I be able to Trikke?

Many people ask this question! Only you can be sure what your body will respond to which is why you should try the Trikke out several times before you buy. That said, many people with older injuries are able to ride the Trikke. The bigger question is whether you are fully recovered from your injury! Never begin a fitness program without discussing it with your doctor or physical therapist.

One of the great things about the Trikke is the riders ability to compensate and create a riding style that’s perfect for their body and their needs. You can ride on a flat surface such as a greenway or street with reduced leg motion if you’ve focused on building up and utilizing your upper body. Depending on your fitness goals and physical abilities, a workout can be created for you to address your specific needs.

Can I really lose weight?

Yes! If you dedicate yourself to a Trikke regimen which includes regular Trikke riding at least 3 times a week (40 minute minimum) and proper diet. You will lose weight over time. You’ll have a great time doing it too! The Trikke is a full body low impact fat burning machine! A 150 pound person can burn up to 240 calories in 30 minutes of steady riding. That’s more than swimming, cycling, golfing, walking, and bowling.

Can it go up hills?

A well conditioned and technique driven Trikke rider is capable of going up inclines of 15-18%. Smaller inclines such as those typically found in neighborhoods or greenways are easy to handle with proper Trikke technique.

Where can I ride it?

This depends on your skill level and imagination! The trikkers dream is a probably a long smooth greenway that goes for miles. If you can’t find that, your neighborhood will be fine, just consider that you’ll need flat areas to learn on and as you get technique down and get more fit, inclines and sidewalks will blend into your repertoire. Many riders take greenways. Many enjoy parking lots for endurance and fitness workouts. Some like the urban environment and love rides on city streets.

How fast can it go?

Top speed for a Trikke is around 18 mph for a rider sprinting on a “flat “surface. Consider though, that the Trikke is self propelled with no gears or chains . So the question is really-“how fast can you make it go?”

Don’t I need a lot of space to ride?

Yes and no. Lots of riders love the wide turns swerve that is so soothing with a Trikke. Yet, the Trikke can be ridden comfortably on an average sidewalk width when you need to. A good rider can pause, start up, and manoeuvre around pedestrians at will.

Which would be best for my child?

There are two models designed for the younger set. The T5 is for younger beginners ages 5-8. The T67 is designed for older kids up to preteens as well as some smaller adults. Some preteens comfortably ride the adult T78 and will grow into it even more so. The best thing to do is call for a try before you buy experience to find which fits your child now and in the future.

How much are they?

The child and preteen models vary from $79 for the T5 to $189 for the T67. Adult models range from $250 to $599.

What’s the difference in the adult models?

The T78 CS ($249) has a steel frame (23 pounds) and has two polyurethane wheels in the rear. These wheels are similar but larger than skate wheels. Many find them easier to learn on, but they’re not great for distance rides because of wear and vibration. They also have far less traction and are difficult for inclines. You can upgrade to air wheels for an additional $50 if your riding needs change.

The T78 Deluxe ($369) has a steel frame (23 pounds) and air wheels all around. It is close to the T78 in body style with a few exceptions, one being the handlebars are more heavy duty (good for longer rides) and the grips on the bars are cushioned and leather like for better grip.

The T8 ($499) has an aluminum frame (20 pounds), and has a longer distance between the handlebars and the foot platforms. This increases your ability to power your way up inclines and reach greater speeds due to the amount of energy you are able to expend from your core. Heavy duty handlebars and grips help you out as well. Think of as the mountain bike version of the Trikke. Good for workout trails and distance rides.

The T12 ($599) has an aluminum frame (30 pounds) but boasts 12 inch tires (other models have 8 inch tires) and a more advanced breaking system. This is the top end of the Trikke models and is the ultimate ride. Imagine 4 more inches of turning power with the same effort and you can imagine how the T12 can eat up the pavement.

How do I get one?

Capital Trikke provides you with Trikke authorized sales, warranty service, and Trikke Certified Training. Years prior we've had a bad ice or snow storm, but this winter the "bad" weather has been consistently colder with more snow flurries than I can remember. As you know, many areas across the US have been fighting deep, deep snow storms this winter so I still consider myself very fortunate. At any rate, I haven't been out trikking due to our weather shifts and my lack of energy that comes from these types of days. Good news is that it is March and spring is just around the corner. Will be doing some traveling this month, but I'm looking forward to getting back into trikke training!
Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Consider the amount of time spent walking on a treadmill, elliptical, or aerobic class. It’s about the movement but it’s also about the non- stop factor. The Trikke provides a low impact highly aerobic workout that burns calories like few other exercises. A 150 pound person can burn 240 calories in 30 minutes of trikking. Imagine 60 minutes. Imagine 90! This is easy for trikkers because the ride is so addicting, 90 minutes go by in a breeze!

Trikking through your neighborhood provides this, but there is something to be said about the power of the loop! Finding a spot where you can have an extended Trikke workout with no distractions or terrain alterations can provide a golden workout, preparing your body for trails and accelerating your arrival to fitness! Put on some Trikke music and have an extended conditioning run. Find a good circular location such as a bank parking lot and let er’ rip! Focus on technique, speed, strength, and endurance. Set a goal of no stopping. Just trikke lap after lap for at least 30 minutes but preferably an hour or more. Your heart, body and soul will love you for it!
Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Trikking is an outdoor sport and by default, many must roll with the punches of the weather. We at Capital Trikke know that when months of bad weather loom on the horizon it’s important for Trikkers to remember that they must find ways to stay in shape all year round. It’s better for your overall health, and it’s important to stay in top shape so that when the warmer days return, you haven’t lost your Trikke strength.

Try to find indoor activities that keep your body fine tuned. Try basketball, volleyball, or Yoga. There are also many home workout programs. I’ve worked with P90x and Body for Life. Sometimes though, you just might need to get into the gym. I admit I’ve hated the gym in the past. I could never stay on a workout program and the structure is exactly the opposite of the freedom that the Trikke offers me. Yet, I’ve found myself repeatedly feeling weaker when long bouts of rain or cooler air push though and I can’t ride. I’ve also come to see that for my body and the style of trikking I desire, I must work on strengthening off the Trikke to be able to handle longer and more incline rich rides. So …,I know …I know…off to the gym I go!

Prepare for the fall and enjoy this video we put together. Often we’ll take the Trikke T12 or the Trikke T78 Deluxe out for a ride in the neighborhood and then Trikke to the gym for an extended workout. On cooler days that little time on the Trikke will be so important, but it also leads to fitness in the form of gym based activities. Don’t give up!
Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Riding the trikke can work all your major muscle groups. As you develop as a rider and become more in tune with your body and the trikke ride, you can customize your workout focus. Some days you might want to work your legs more. Some days you might want to work your chest and arms for a great upper body work out. Some days you might want to put a little more “carve” intensity into your workout to accentuate your abdominals as with an oblique machine.

Make sure that you take care of the most important part of your body in your workout—your heart. Remember to warm up into your ride. Take at least 10 minutes and ideally 20 to ride slowly, giving your heart rate the chance to rise just as slowly. Never kick start with inclines and pushes without warming up first! Your heart will appreciate this warm up as will the rest of your body. Consider getting a heart rate monitor for your workouts. Using this and understanding your target heart rate will help you stay within the range you need to be, as well as giving you a tool to monitor your fitness progress.

(repost)

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Occasionally people are looking to overhaul and update their older model trikkes with new handlebars and foot grips. With just a few inexpensive items, an older trikke can look like a new model and gain new life! In the past, our website has only offered a few items and that web location was a bit obscured as we typically took phone orders for these type items. Starting today, Capital Trikke has set up our trikke parts and accessories on one visible web page with easy online shopping cart order capability and speedy delivery. Check it out!

If you have the need to order major repair parts such as cambering arms or other replacement items, feel free to call us at 866-240-1179. We'll do our best to get you set and back on the trails in no time at all!

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Capital Trikke was having a group ride and he contacted us about driving down from Va to join us. At the time, that amazed me—that a rider would drive that far to ride with other trikkers. Since then, I've done it....seen it done....and it seems quite normal now!

Lawrence is a fantastic trikker. I have never seen anyone ride as fast as him, and yes at that ride we recorded the now infamous "Trikke Crash Road Rash" video that has nearly 8,000 views...wow. Man. He had such speed! Even falling he had style and grace. Though I didn’t see the aftermath of the fall because he ran right into me, people who were there still talk about his “chest surfing” fall that protected his non helmet wearing head. Since then we’ve become friends and I’ve had the pleasure of riding with him several more times. He is still the fastest and unfortunately, he still doesn’t wear a helmet most of the time!

It’s great that Lawrence has started getting print recognition of his passion for trikking. Several weeks ago when Rock and Roll Fitness was spotlighted in the Washington Post, he was prominently mentioned (along with the video). Last week, Lawrence was spotlighted in his local newspaper. It is a great article with several cool pictures and yes, the online edition has the crash video posted! He’s much more than the Trikke Crash Test Model that I joked about during that video. He's a strong, talented, and skillful rider that is getting well deserved attention. Trikke on Lawrence!

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

By just spending moments with him at dinner the night before the ride, we discovered a gentle, life enthusiastic soul, with a pure love of trikking. What a wonderful guy Mark is! The day of the ride we were so impressed with his skill, his heart, and his drive, that afterwards it seemed sad to see him go. Here's a great clip of Cheryl from Idaho working her way up her first hill on her T12. Cheryl does a great job here! Love the music and what's great about the clip is that she's demonstrating perfectly how effortlessly (though it's not!) it looks when you climb a hill with good trikking technique. It can be done, and you don't have to be a long term hill shredder to find success.

First, you can see that Cheryl is engaging both her upper and lower body. Her arms are keeping control of the handle bars--she isnt turning inwards too far and risking jack knife. Her pecs are working to add the upper body strength needed to work her handlebars, so the front wheel returns back and forth to the correct position (see our video on "Keeping the line in mind). You can also see her push slightly forward, leaning her body towards the front of the trikke with each turn.

Her feet are sweeping forward in the invisible motion needed to maintain trikke forward momentum. She's not pushing backwards with her feet and breaking momentum, instead she's driving her feet and importantly, the trikke forward with each lean of her lower body. Her core remains tight as she maintains the right balance to put all of this together for the forward momentum that helps propel her up the hill.

Finally, she ties it all together by finding and staying in trikke rhythm. Rhythm is king (or queen in this case). Notice when she starts going up the incline, although she starts to work harder, her rythmn stays steady and therefore so does her form. Great job and as Cheryl said, "on to the next hill!" As she get stronger and stronger, hills will start getting flatter and flatter. Carve Diem!

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Perhaps not the best title of "tricycles for adults," or referring to Trikkes as "odd looking tricycles," but as they say, "good press...." Perhaps it won't help the image of the Pon-e and might suggest it is a toy. I don't think it is. I think the pon-e is a great way to combine assisted distance commuting with the outdoor activity of trikking.

Now, many don't believe that the pon-e facilitates trikking. As a tribred owner and a trainer who has installed many e-kits on different trikke models, I have to disagree. Just as the traditional trikke ride is really about the stamina, power, skill, and speed of the rider--what you put in is what you get out---so it is with the tribred and pon-e. You don't have to ride it standing straight up without carving. Carving while riding is the best way to work on your fitness through the pon-e!

You also have to remember that everyone doesn't start out physically able to shred--nor do some want to. The tribred has always been a great option in my mind for those who want the best of both worlds. Those who are recovering from injuries. Or, those just needing a little assist once in a while. Nothing wrong with that! I personally love going on a traditional ride through my neighborhood and then drying the sweat off with a tribred blast!

Check out the video above of a rider in San Francisco. One could ride, lightly carving as they do-- or shred. It's still trikking in the end!

E-Kits installed and pon-e purchases all available at Capital Trikke!

Great national exposure to the green generation, Trikke and Sam Jayme

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

The last time I made the trip was in November. With my “trikke eyes” on full alert I spied many glorious locations for riding. A hidden jewel popped up as we drove through Santee SC. Running adjacent to I-95 at Lake Marion is a beautiful 2 mile, over water bridge full of walkers, cyclists-- but no trikkers! This strip is a great ride challenge with flat areas and a very nice rising incline over the lake. Check the Santee Park out here!

Florida trikkers …wow. I don’t think I would ever come home at night if I had some of your paths! Fort Myers is a gorgeous city with miles and miles of peaceful, low traffic, flat sidewalks and dedicated trails that are perfect for trikking. Stayed near Sanibel Island which has 22 miles of bike paths! This is a beautiful resort area that I will return to. Another great location is the Lakes Regional Park. Very nice riding areas there without the toll bridge expense of traveling to Sanibel.

Might be back in the area in October. Will be sure to enjoy the beach and the trikking community!
Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

New riders often risk injury by jerking the handlebars and/or pulling them too far inside from left to right. This can cause you to fall off the trikke due to jack knifing! It also makes your trikke ride less smooth as the constant practice of this jerking motion will break down proper form. Here we show new riders how to take their time by focusing on a visual cue to help build nice smooth form, while at the same time promoting safer handlebar movement.
Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Now there is the 3GS ($200) and I went ahead and got it. Many times I contemplated buying a separate GPS like the Garmin, but I really didn’t feel I was hardcore enough to pay the couple of hundred for that, when I believed my eventual iphone upgrade would suffice.

Now that I have the 3GS, I am very happy with it. The trikke related test would be through the GPS ability of apps available on the iphone. I use MotionX GPS as a $1.99 application and have just started trikking with it . Granted, I haven’t used the Garmin, but I am happy with this method. As you can see from my screen shots, my info was recorded without difficulty. For me this is relevant info. Unfortunately, I’m not a speed demon but it is nice to now have more details to keep me aware of benchmarks for my personal best. I don’t have to keep track of them anymore as the iphone does it now. It’s funny though. Now that I can see my speed in detail, I have to wonder if I’ll start riding harder and faster to beat my times? Before, I never really thought about speed per say, just how I felt or how long it took me. Never really got into calculating what time meant in speed. This could be an interesting training partner!

I also like that the application can access my ipod music from within the app, so I do not have to toggle back and forth between the applications. See screenshot above and see how I set my various workouts up.

Overall, it’s a thumbs up for me and my iphone 3GS. Never had a Blackberry or PalmPre. Never had a Garmin…but my iphone works just fine for me!

Capital Trikke of Raleigh NC

Now, imagine the will and stamina it would take for you to do that 8 days in a row! Well that’s exactly what Washington State trikker Mark Codispoti is doing as he brings his 50 States+ DC/ 51 Trikkathon Tour to the East coast. Like many, Mark sees his trikke as a commitment to health, and with the tragic loss of a loved one, he considers this journey as one way to show dedication to them both. This past April and June, he completed 13 trikkathons and rode 100 miles in the 4th Annual Century Ride. His remarkable journey is documented on his site.

Now, he is swinging through our area and we at Capital Trikke are proud to host his NC trikke stop. Mark will be riding the American Tobacco Trail in Durham on Saturday August 8 beginning at 10 am. This will be a double out and back, with the second 13 miles beginning at around 11:30. All are welcome to come out, ride your own distance, and cheer Mark on. Upon returning to the ride start, everybody will get in their cars and head up to Coots Lake to meet up with longer distance riders and enjoy the rest of the day. (longer distance riders can make arrangement for cars to brought up or get a ride back at the end of the day)

The second meeting point will be Coot’s Lake Beach approx 30 miles up the trail. We should all be together around 1pm for lunch.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Mableton+&1s=GA&1a=4342+Floyd+Rd&2c=Rockmart+&2s=GA&2a=Coots+Lake+Rd+And+Hwy+278

(see specific directions from ride start to Coot’s below)

It’s $5.00 per person admission for Coot’s Lake Beach

.We will have a full cook out picnic and fun time at Coot’s. We will have basic cook out food for everyone (dogs, burgers, chips, sodas etc), but feel free to bring any items specific to your diet. There is a lake/beach for anyone who wants to enjoy water activities. We will bring some game stuff, footballs etc. Be sure to throw some fun stuff in your car!

Those who want to continue to ride and explore can ride to other trailheads from Coot’s while everyone continues to play! One suggestion to complete a 50+ mile ride is to Trikke back down the trail from Coots to Rambo and back to Coot’s. That’s 21 miles round trip, but there are many mile opportunities. See trail breakdown below.

We will have one last casual group ride in the afternoon (around 3pm) with everyone Trikking through the scenic trail to Rockmart and back 7.4 miles round trip. This should be a very fun ride!

Upon finishing the group ride, everyone leaves from Coot’s Lake

TRAIL INFO

1. FFloyd Rd Mile 0.0 1st Annual Capital Trikke Remembrance Ride Begins at Silver Comet Depot

4342 Floyd Rd Mableton Ga 30126

Parking, Bike Shop for any last minute riding supplies, convenience store

http://silvercometdepot.com/

http://wikimapia.org/#lat=33.846922&lon=-84.586315&z=17&l=0&m=h&v=2

2. Carter Rd 4.4 /8.8 miles round trip

Just Parking—no restrooms!

http://wikimapia.org/#lat=33.857827&lon=-84.657276&z=17&l=0&m=h&v=2&show=/6896889/Silver-Comet-Trail-Carter-Rd-Trailhead-Wildhorse-Creek-Trail

3. Florence Rd 7.6 /15.2 miles RT

Restrooms,

Convenience store and restaurant 2 blocks from trail

http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=33.8694&lon=-84.70077&z=17&l=0&m=h&v=2

This is a bike riders view of the ride from Florence Rd to Coots. It's the moment when you are communicating with a student, and suddenly the torch is passed. They get what you're saying, and this knowledge is transformed into their own action. Ah Ha!

I have been fortunate to have had these moments in many venues: As a college instructor in the classroom trying to communicate sociological concepts. As an online college instructor, where it's a whole different ball game because what you write, not what you visually communicate, must facilitate the ah ha. As a certified Trikke Trainer, communicating with a new rider who may be unsure of their own body mechanics, or may misunderstand what these mechanics mean in getting the Trikke moving.

All of these venues have been very rewarding and they fulfill a core ideology for me. I believe that the spreading of knowledge is a gift. One to one or in a group --it is a gift. This past weekend Capital Trikke began our Capital Trikke Fitness Classes, in addition to our regular group and private lessons. In the fitness class we mixed lessons and workout, and I can tell you, there were many "ah ha" moments! Moments not just in technique but in.. "ah ha ..I didn't think I could do this much!" Then later a private lesson came, and the client was unsure of their own ability. Before the hour was up, they were thinking about their potential, and what goals for fitness they could achieve by the end of summer.

This is a wonderful experience!
