Helping Hands - Ashley Shuyler, AfricAid (podcast)

At the age of 11, Ashley Shuyler of Golden, Colorado visited Tanzania with her family for a photo safari and returned inspired. While most girls her age might have returned from the trip with a collection of postcards and souvenirs, Ashley returned with inspiration. On her trip she was struck by the poverty among children her own age and the necessity of those children to forgo school in order to support their families by selling wares on the roadside.

Upon her return to Colorado, Ashley began to learn everything she could about Tanzania. She learned that education was a key factor in the improvement of living conditions for girls like her and at the age of 14, she started working to form AfricAid. She told everyone she could about her goal- teachers, friends, family, neighbors, and coaches- and in 2001 saw her hard work come to fruition. Hear how Ashley did it and what her joys and set backs have been along the way.
