Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to reset Living Steel

Now that I'm finally digging into MoP, I wanted to post today about Living Steel. Thanks to Mike (@MSherretz) and Cold (@SSmith0911) from the Auction House Junkies podcast for letting me in on the Living Steel trick. Because I'm well late to the party, I won't sit here and try and explain the process for Living Steel but it's pretty simple. Ghost Iron Ore>Ghost Iron Bars>Trillium Bars>Living Steel on CD with each transmute spec Alchemist you have. (I have four!). With that out of the way, I want to get to the meat of the subject, the Living Steel market it's self.

Two days ago, my Living Steel Market was at a solid 700g per unit and moving as quickly as things were being listed. When I came home yesterday after the patch, my auctionator informed me the price had dropped to 500g. My first assumption was well, Ore must have came down in price, and I almost went ahead and listed anyway. However, I decided I'd take a look and see what was going on. Upon review, the majority of the market was still hanging out at 688g. However, one seller had listed three bars and dropped his price to 550g, while the other had undercut him even deeper with 4 bars at 500g. Rather than following the downward trend, I decided I would stop it and make a profit with it.

Knowing how much demand out weighs supply right now and how fast these bars are moving, I quickly bought out all 7 bars, and relisted them, along with the 5 I had just made (Hell yea, LS Proc!). I worried a bit at first, but two hours later, all 12 bars had sold for the 688 price that I listed them. So on top of the profit made from just using my transmutes, I made an additional 1166g by simple moving the market back in an upward direction.

Long story short, Living Steel has a gated supply. There is no reason at all to lower the pricing. This is one of those examples, that even if you list higher then the lowest item the demand will buy back into your price bracket as well. Be smart with what you're doing, especially at this point in the expansion. Markets are volatile, but Living Steel is a great example of being able to ride a market upward.

Cold's Gold Factory Blogging Carnival: Market Comparison

It's carnival time over at Cold's Gold Factory! I haven't been able to participate in one of these for several months, but I'm writing again and wanted to make sure I jumped back in. Gold carnivals are great and allow readers to get the opinion of different writers writing on the same topic.

This month topic for blogger's is to compare two markets, and how they are handled differently. For my markets, I'm choosing two that I activley participate in. Gems and Glyphs. Now, please be advised my markets have been a little rough over the past couple of weeks due to the expansion annoucement, so this is how I normally go about things.

Glyphs:
This is going to be a very unique perspective for you guys. The way I do glyphs is very different from the way most people do them. While most gold makers will post and repost their glyphs several times during the day, I post every glyph I have on a 48 hour posting schedule. The reason I find myself doing this is because it's not a main market for me, and I find the micromangement does not usually lead to an increased income. Moreover, I list all of my glyphs far above the lowest listed price. This allows me to capitalize on those moments when not glyphs other than my long duration glyphs are listed. Now, this could change with a far amount of new characters coming in MoP, but after that settle downs, I will continue to use this strategy.

Gems:
This has been my main market for a very long time. I've written a lot about gems in the past here on Capped By Cata, so I won't rewrite everything but the way I work with gems that is the most successful is walling. I run massive gem walls and essentially bully people out of the gem market. The way I do this is by having a deep inventory and not being afraid to undercut deeply and pay a little more posting fees. I run my walls on a 48 hour cycle and do not cancel and repost. So if I get undercut, I repost another wall underneath the person that undercut me. Eventually, they figure out that I'm a bit crazy and leave my market. It has worked for a good while now.

Hopefully this is a good example of how I look at markets differently.

Preparation for MoP: Farming of Course

During a recent twitter conversation, I was talking about my Mage who I will be taking through the MoP content first. This is the first time I haven’t been focusing on my warrior in an expansion. However, with my Scroll of Res mage, I’ve fallen in love. It’s more fun to play than any other class to me, so it’s getting first shot at the on goings in Mists. With that in mind, I find myself pretty bored in the game.

I’ve done all the PvP gearing I can with the character, and I have no desire to raid on it at this point in the game. I find myself logging in, posting auctions and logging off. With that in mind, I figure if I’m going to be sporadic about my playing, I may as well do something productive. So here is my plan.

I’m going to pad my mage with an extra 100k. All by farming. I know what you’re thinking, what can you farm that you’re going to be able to sell? The answer is simple. Netherweave. Netherweave that is going to be used to craft into netherweave bags. Here is my plan:

Currently, on my server, bags sell for around 30g. However, given the overwhelming demand at the very beginning of Mists, I feel the price could easily raise to 50g a bag and go steady for a few weeks. It may even spike more if the supply runs out. 50g is a conservative number, so that’s what I’m going to use for this example. My goal is to farm up 2000 stacks of Netherweave cloth. We’re 52 days out so that means I need to average 39 stacks a day to make that 2000 stack goal. That would mean, at the go of MoP I would have 2000 bags ready to sell. At an average 50g per bag, that’s 100k I’d be able to snag in the first week alone. During this time, I will also be snatching up any cheap cloth I can find on my own. If I could manage to gather 3000+ bags, I would feel pretty well prepared.

Some of you may be questioning two things. How am I going to store it, and how am I going to sell it all?

Storage:

Up until about a week before the release, I plan to keep the cloth in bolt form within my guild bank. About a week to two weeks ahead of release I’ll start crafting the bags. Anything I can’t fit in my guild tabs I will store on the Auction House. If they sell they sell, if not I’m still ok.

Demand:

3000 bags seems awfully overwhelming and hard to manage, but in all honesty, I don’t think I’ll have to manage it for long. With the onset of Pandas and my recent move to high pop Arthas, it should be an easy venture to move 2000-3000 bags. At 5 bags per player 400 people have to make pandas for me to sell out of 2000 bags. Given close to a 100k population on my side of the server, this should be a none issue.

Why Moving High Pop was My Best Decision

We all read gold blogs. Whether you love or hate the author that is writing, they will all tell you the same thing. “Results will depend on your server.” It’s something we’ve all heard time and time again. It’s true. Results are very much server dependant. However, at this point in my WoW career, I can finally say that you control your gold making abilities by your server size.

Before I go further and get a bunch of hate mail telling me how I’m wrong, I’ll preface this with saying that you can still make significant amounts of gold on low population servers. In fact, depending on your liquid capital, amount of time willing to invest, and if the server is actually small enough you could control the whole auction house. But that is for another post. However, if you’re a low to mid income player, your abilities to make gold on low population servers are quite limited at this current juncture of the game.

Why?

The answer is basic. You have fewer people to sell your goods and fewer people to provide you with raw materials. You have fewer raiders looking for gems and leg armors and fewer people making alts that need glyphs. Hell, you have fewer people who are gullible enough to buy fortune cards. The point I’m trying to make, is that on a low pop server, your opportunity for making gold is much smaller then on a high population server.

I came from Scilla. When I was researching my move, Scilla had a population of roughly 20k players. 8k Horde (my side) and 12k Alliance (of which 11.5k were made up of women and children). Of those 20k players, I would estimate that maybe half of them were active. Even during peak time 7pm-11pm a quick “/who” in Orgimmar would not always fill up the players box. Moreover, I won the fishing tournament because only one other person was competing! (He even follows me on twitter! @CappedByCata).

My sales were very slow. Everything I had I posted on a 48 hour time slot, and most of it would come back to my mailbox. Not because I had been undercut, but because no one was buying. Basic staples weren’t moving. It was time for a change.

The Move

After researching via WarcraftRealms, I found a new home. Arthas was going to be my destination. According to the data, it was an 80k – 60k split. 80k Horde and 60k women and children (THAT’S TWICE I’VE SAID IT). This would increase my opportunity for moving product, and leave a ton of room for cross faction arbitrage. Moreover, I should never lose BH again! So, I packed up my level 25 guild, gathered my gold and prepared my alts for travel. $85 later, I was home.

The Benefit

Even with the “lull” in the game, my server is always active. Tons of people in Org, even in the AM. Product moving like it’s peak time on Scilla 24 hours a day. I have no problems moving gems or enchanting mats anymore. Leg armors and glyphs sell. Hell, there are even plenty of people ready to get rich of Fortune cards. My opportunity for moving product increased dramatically. It was my best decision. Sure, it was a real world investment, but it will be worth it for the long term.

The Bad

The thing about high pop servers, is that the ability to buy rare items is much easier. My gold cap has been depleted and my characters have been rewarded with tons of new mounts. I even have myself one of those fancy see-thru tigers. But alas, my liquid capital has taken a hit. With that in mind, I’m not worried though. I got great prices on the goods I bought and I’ll easily be able to make it up in the few months before MoP.

Taking Advantage of Trade Chat

I’ve put out a couple of different posts over the past couple of days. One of my most well received was my post The Big Flip: 90k a day. With today’s post, I want to expand upon that topic with another great tip that can help you make some serious gold in the World Of Warcraft. Take advantage of trade chat!

Trade chat for a lot of players is an often over looked area for gold making. On most server, trade chat is a haven for trolls and pug raid recruitment. For a lot of players, this quickly becomes tiresome, and some go as far to leave the trade chat channel all together. If you’re serious about gold making, I highly advise against that. Some of my best deals of all time have come from trade chat. There are three types of people you will run into in trade chat that you can benefit from. I’ll break down those three types so you know what to look out for.

The Bot:

Love them or hate them, they are a part of the game we play. While Blizzard has top notch bot detection, botting will always be part of the World Of Warcraft. For gold makers, bots often times are big competition, especially when they focus on one market and saturate it. However, bots can also lead to big profits. Bots/Gold Sellers will often time hit the trade channel to find quick buyers for goods. Whether they be TCG items or farmed raw goods. A little patience and negotiation can lead to a big time score. This is the trade chat type that you’ll most often come in contact with and you can use time and time again to profit.

The Desperate:

These players are great. They need money for raiding/repairs/gems/enchants/etc. Whatever it is, they need it RIGHT NOW. They will often times bring their failed attempts at gold making to market. Bulk glyphs, bulk raw materials are common. Another find are pets that they may get from a satchel. I’ve bought several argent tournaments pets for under one thousand gold this way. With an average cost of 5k on my server, the profit it easy.

The Uninformed:

These are the least common type, but can often be the most lucrative. Players who obtain an item and have no idea what the value of the item is. Think TCG mount. This also reflects back to my guild example. The best way to take advantage of uninformed players is to be knowledgeable about your markets. Be knowledgeable about recent changes and up coming expansions. The more information you have about the current state of the economy, the better you’ll be prepared to take advantage of uninformed players.

The Big Flip: 90k in a day

For some of you, fathoming that amount of gold is astronomical, and making it in one flip? Well, that’s unbelievable. However, what if I told you it was true? What if I told you anyone with a decent amount of liquid capital and bargaining skills can do it to? What if I told you depending on your dedication you could do it multiple times without question? Well, that’s what I’m going to do.

When I was contemplating rejoining the gold blogging game, I stumbled upon this method. I took to twitter with one simple tweet:

“So I haven’t tweeted about gold making in awhile, but I’ve found the ultimate be all end all gold making method. Just made 90k in one flip.”

I got a lot of responses. Everyone wanted to know what I did. I wanted to answer for everyone, but I left it alone. Only because I found like I had stumbled on to something truly secret. However, this week in the Markets of the Week segment of the Auction House Junkies Podcast I spilled the beans. So I may as well bring it to you here on the blog.

First off, your initial thought is wrong. I’m not flipping TCG mounts or anything related to collecting. I’m not flipping raw goods farmed from bots, and I’m definitely not flipping duped items. Nope. I’m flipping guilds. Level 25 guilds to be specific.

I’ve made the big flip twice so far. This is only because I haven’t actively worked at it on a daily basis. My first experience was expected, but the most recent one wasn’t. My first flip came from my server transfer; during a recording of Auction House Junkies we talked about value of level 25 guilds, and for grins, during the show I tried to buy one on my small little server. This was several months ago. I landed one for what I thought at the time, was a lot, 70k. However, this was a deal I just didn’t know it. A few months later, I packed up all my gold, and most of my alts and transferred over to a high pop server. Arthas to be exact. (Do you play on Arthas? Let me know, I have no friends.) True high pop servers are very different then what I’m use to. Collectable mounts a plenty and all my gold could be easily spent. This was a first for me. So, out of the spirit of buying me a Heroic Rag mount, I took to the realm forums looking to buy a carry. Low and behold I found it. “WTB: Level 25 Guild”. “Double click” I said. Inside, there was a nice man offering to purchase a level 25 guild for 100k. 30k profit! Woot! Or so I thought. Then I read the responses. “Good luck, you’ll never get one at that price.” Loool, more like 250k” and the comments continued. 250k? Seriously? I didn’t believe it. So I headed over to the Guild leadership forum and they were every where. WTB and WTS ads all for level 25 guilds. Curiosity got the best of me, so I posted mine for sale. Horde side, Arthas 250k. Added my BNet account and waited. Two days later I had about 10 friend requests and plenty of offers. I settled on a deal of 220k and the guy transferred to me. 150k profit. Too easy!

This got my wheels turning, but I thought on a high pop server, I would never find another guild to flip. But, I did. Guy sent one spam over trade chat saying he was quitting and selling off his guild. I instantly whispered. “100k in hand” I said. He said…”Uh…I have to have 120k.” I said “Deal”. I probably high balled him and caught him off guard because most people don’t know the value, but nevertheless, I snatched it up. This time, I posted my listing on the guild leadership and realm forum. Next evening, sold 210k from someone on my server. 90k and it was a full internal server flip. I didn’t have to have anyone transfer. That’s when I knew, this method was really powerful.

In reality, you could hit the gold cap in as little as 10 completed flips, there is nothing in the game currently that offers that can of power. While it may seem intimidating to invest that much capital into something, if you can find them at the right price, I highly recommend it.

The buying and selling I’m going to leave to you guys. Take advantage of your server. Watch trade chat, use your realm forums. Find someone who has quit or recently be able to overthrow a guild because of 30 day none login. Those people may be willing to cut you a nice deal for a small sum of gold in the grand scheme of things.

That’s right, here I am! Back out of retirement ready to take the New York Jets by storm! Uh…yea…something like that. If you didn’t’ get that reference, you’re watching the wrong kind of football. All football humor aside, I am back!

If you’re new to the site, welcome! If you’re a loyal reader, thank you for coming back! It’s been several months since I’ve wrote about all the facets of gold making, so the come back feels right. I’ve had another career change, and am in a much more stable environment. This position is much more conducive to productivity, unlike my last position. With that in mind, I plan to be able to bring a lot of fresh content back to the site. I’ll be writing at my own pace, and for no other reason than myself. So like it or lump it!

Posting Schedule:
My goal is around three times a week. More if I have quality things to write about, less if I don’t. Posts will be various. From tutorials and retrospection to podcast updates and contests. Pretty much the same content you’ve seen here on the site for the past two years. No grand changes there.

I’ve already composed all of my writing ideas for the next month, so I’ll be banging those out at work during my downtime. So it's been a while since I've posted a new blog post directly related to gold making, rather than just AHJ. I'll be honest, I dropped the ball on the most recent patch. I didn't stockpile enough, or have enough time to really make a big impression on my server. However, I still faired pretty well.

With that in mind I am already thinking way ahead to MoP. The most important thing going into MoP in my opinion will be hedging your gold with assets to fight off inflation. One of those assets are pets. Christmas offers a unique time to buy up a large amount of pets to bank on. Helper boxes, bells, snowmen kits all offer a great way to hedge your gold.

Start buying these now. Nap the cheap ones off the AH and spam trade. Don't miss out on an easy opportunity to double or triple your money in a few months.

Casual Gold Making Part 1: Establish a Time Frame

This post is part of the Casual Gold Making Series. This series aims to provide valuable tips and techniques for being successful at gold making for casual players.

Establish a Time Frame
The word “casual” gets thrown around a lot in the World Of Warcraft community. You can be a “casual” player, a “casual” PvP’er, a “casual” raider, and of course a “casual” gold maker. These days, the term casual really just means you don’t have a lot of play time. Casual gold making is something any player can accomplish. Of course though, there is one caveat. Because you are on limited play time, you would of course have a greater opportunity for increased earnings if you spent more time playing. Other then that, the playing field is pretty even.

For someone who is looking to make gold on a casual basis, it’s important to pick a time frame that works the best for you. How much time can you really dedicate to strictly making gold? If you’re spending an hour a day playing WoW, what of that can you dedicate directly to gold making? The first step to being successful is putting together a routine. To put together your routine, you have to have a time frame dedication. Once a time frame has been decided on, you can then determine your routine, and potentially your markets based upon that. One important thing to note is that when you lock down your time commitment, be honest to yourself. While it sounds great to say “I can spend two hours a day on gold making”, don’t plan for that if it’s really not feasible. If you can only gaurntee yourself 30 minutes a day, then only spend 30 minutes a day. The key to being successful on a casual level is consistency. Maintaining a consistent and profitable routine will build your wealth over the long haul. You want to aim for linear wealth. By that I mean wealth that is consistently moving forward in an uphill slope. Not a in small spurts and peaks and valleys. If you can make your time commitment consistent, then your earnings will become consistent.

Hello! Yes, still alive and kicking! Capped By Cata is still chugging along nicely. However, content production has slowed to a crawl. This is mostly due to my personal work schedule and taking interest in my other hobby of paintball. But alas, the paintball season has drawn to a close and thus focus will return to Capped By Cata and the World Of Warcraft. I had started on a site revamp and really like it, so now it’s just about producing more content to help you with making gold in the World Of Warcraft. As with most people, the next two months will be crazy. The holiday season is upon us. With the holiday season drawing near, I’m setting new goals that I want to accomplish before year end. I want you guys to be a part of that, so I’m putting this together as a road map of things to watch for in the coming months.

New Series: I’m going back to series writing. I’ll be putting out several series that are gold making related over the course of the next two months. When news slows down, it’s time to get back to basics. The first series I will be writing will be how to make gold on casual play time.

News Letter Emphasis: The Capped By Cata mailer is gaining new subscribers on a daily basis. I will be putting out gold making tips and content directed only to news letter subscribers. If you haven’t signed up yet, now is the time!

Gold Making Videos: This is a long standing back burner project for me. I’ve got a lot of backlog footage I’m going to edit and narrate to get posted for you folks. Hopefully these will be helpful for you.

Auction House Junkies: A refocus on the podcast as well. Cold and Mike have been on me about getting more shows put out, and I don’t want to disappoint. Start to look for shows to be put out within close to 24 hours after recording.
