So it's been a while since I've posted a new blog post directly related to gold making, rather than just AHJ. I'll be honest, I dropped the ball on the most recent patch. I didn't stockpile enough, or have enough time to really make a big impression on my server. However, I still faired pretty well.

With that in mind I am already thinking way ahead to MoP. The most important thing going into MoP in my opinion will be hedging your gold with assets to fight off inflation. One of those assets are pets. Christmas offers a unique time to buy up a large amount of pets to bank on. Helper boxes, bells, snowmen kits all offer a great way to hedge your gold.

Start buying these now. Nap the cheap ones off the AH and spam trade. Don't miss out on an easy opportunity to double or triple your money in a few months.

Casual Gold Making Part 1: Establish a Time Frame

This post is part of the Casual Gold Making Series. This series aims to provide valuable tips and techniques for being successful at gold making for casual players.

Establish a Time Frame
The word “casual” gets thrown around a lot in the World Of Warcraft community. You can be a “casual” player, a “casual” PvP’er, a “casual” raider, and of course a “casual” gold maker. These days, the term casual really just means you don’t have a lot of play time. Casual gold making is something any player can accomplish. Of course though, there is one caveat. Because you are on limited play time, you would of course have a greater opportunity for increased earnings if you spent more time playing. Other then that, the playing field is pretty even.

For someone who is looking to make gold on a casual basis, it’s important to pick a time frame that works the best for you. How much time can you really dedicate to strictly making gold? If you’re spending an hour a day playing WoW, what of that can you dedicate directly to gold making? The first step to being successful is putting together a routine. To put together your routine, you have to have a time frame dedication. Once a time frame has been decided on, you can then determine your routine, and potentially your markets based upon that. One important thing to note is that when you lock down your time commitment, be honest to yourself. While it sounds great to say “I can spend two hours a day on gold making”, don’t plan for that if it’s really not feasible. If you can only gaurntee yourself 30 minutes a day, then only spend 30 minutes a day. The key to being successful on a casual level is consistency. Maintaining a consistent and profitable routine will build your wealth over the long haul. You want to aim for linear wealth. By that I mean wealth that is consistently moving forward in an uphill slope. Not a in small spurts and peaks and valleys. If you can make your time commitment consistent, then your earnings will become consistent.

Capped By Cata Status Update!

Hello! Yes, still alive and kicking! Capped By Cata is still chugging along nicely. However, content production has slowed to a crawl. This is mostly due to my personal work schedule and taking interest in my other hobby of paintball. But alas, the paintball season has drawn to a close and thus focus will return to Capped By Cata and the World Of Warcraft. I had started on a site revamp and really like it, so now it’s just about producing more content to help you with making gold in the World Of Warcraft. As with most people, the next two months will be crazy. The holiday season is upon us. With the holiday season drawing near, I’m setting new goals that I want to accomplish before year end. I want you guys to be a part of that, so I’m putting this together as a road map of things to watch for in the coming months.

New Series: I’m going back to series writing. I’ll be putting out several series that are gold making related over the course of the next two months. When news slows down, it’s time to get back to basics. The first series I will be writing will be how to make gold on casual play time.

News Letter Emphasis: The Capped By Cata mailer is gaining new subscribers on a daily basis. I will be putting out gold making tips and content directed only to news letter subscribers. If you haven’t signed up yet, now is the time!

Gold Making Videos: This is a long standing back burner project for me. I’ve got a lot of backlog footage I’m going to edit and narrate to get posted for you folks. Hopefully these will be helpful for you.

Profit Off Level 79 Twink Casters

Like many of other players, I’ve been spending a lot of time leveling alts. One of my favorite alts to level has been my Warlock. A nasty little undead clothie who spent his days running around the dungeon finder on his way to 80. However, before leveling to 80, I took a little break at level 79 to earn some honor points. The level 75-79 bracket is an interesting one. You’ll see two types of players in this bracket: Leveling Players and Twinks.

Leveling players are just that. They are jumping into battle grounds to gain some quick XP and take a break from the dungeon finder or are tired of questing. Whatever the reason is, these players make for easy targets for those twink players. The twink players are taking advantage of level 77-79 Cataclysm gear that is available to them via the Auction House, questing, or farming. It’s a fun bracket to play in as a twink. The queues are short and with a couple of Auction House purchases you can easily double the amount of health you have compared to other players in the bracket. The average leveling player you will find in the bracket will have roughly 15-19k health. The average twink players can have 40-50k, or even more in some cases. What I wanted to talk about today was a certain item type that can help you cater to this bracket, and cloth casters in particular.

Of the Wildfire

As a Warlock, Mage, or Shadow Priest caster, this is my particular preference in twinking gear for the level 75-79 bracket. While these items lack resilience, they make up for it with the sheer amount of stamina they possess. On average, a ring can have anywhere from 150-164 stamina, while something like a chest piece can have up to 260 stamina. Moreover, items that have Of the Wildfire following them carry two great stats for casters. Chance to Crit and Chance to Hit. Nothing is better in PvP then a big Crit; and having a proc’d shadow bolt miss that could have been a kill is frustrating. So stacking hit and crit is a great way to gain an advantage over your opponents. I’ve had some great successes over the past week or so flipping Of the Wildfire items. I find a lot of the blue quality rings and pendants listed on the Auction House. These are easy sellers in the 200 gold range. However, I’ll find them listed quite often under 50 gold each. It’s a quick flip. Moreover, Green quality items are a little more rare, so I’m able to flip these for a larger profit. Things like bracers, gloves, leggings, etc are a great way for twinks to maximize there stats while still maintaining a few key pieces of PvP gear. These pieces as well can go for upwards of 200 gold.

This is just a quick example of one item in the 77-79 bracket that twinks are using. Hop in a battleground on your alt and take a look for yourself. See what you can replicate based on your server. The more you’re able to flip, the higher your profits will be.

Taking Advantage of Time Zones

On Episode 17 of the Auction House Junkies Podcast, Cold and I had a quick conversation about server time zones and making gold in the World Of Warcraft. I thought I would bring that conversation here to the blog and expand on it a bit.

How to Take Advantage of your Servers Time Zone

The best thing about making Gold in the World Of Warcraft is that even the smallest of details like a time zone can make an impact on the economy and your potential for earnings. In this post I’m going to outline a couple of quick tips that will enable you to capitalize on the time zone linked to your server. First, you’ll need to figure out the time zone in which your server is located. It’s not necessarily the same time zone you live in. While the majority of players play on a server with their same time zone, many do not. Exploiting this will surely land you with some extra profits.

Take Advantage of your Own Time:

If you live in the same time zone shared by your server, think about your playing habits. Most of you will probably play during peak time and find yourself offline during dormant hours. Find a way to play in those dormant hours! Do you know when the best time to buy raw materials is? Early morning! I’m talking real early. Like 6 AM early. Instead of rolling over and hitting that snooze button on your phone, go ahead and fire up the mobile Auction House. Check some raw materials. You’ll find cheaper postings. This is because these are the last people to undercut the market after everyone else has logged off. You can also use this same method in reverse to move product. In a competitive market like Glyphs with heavy undercutting, staying up super late and posting your auctions is a sure fire way to make sure a majority of them actually sell.

A Different Time Zone Means Easy Money:

If you have the luxury of playing on a different time zone then you can put these same methods into practice with much less work. For example, if you live in the Eastern Time zone and play on the Western Time zone like I use to (Sorry EU players, I don’t know your fancy Time Zone names.) it was very easy to pick off those Auctions with deep undercuts in the early morning hours. This is a great way to pick up crafting materials on the cheap or other items for flipping. If you’re in the West and playing on an Eastern server the same also works. If you stay up until mid-night your time, you’ll most likely be looking at the very last of the auctions posted by Eastern time zone players. Again, you’ll be finding the cheapest prices. Pick those up for crafting or flipping as well.

These are just a few examples of the ways you can make an impact on your profit margins just by analyzing the time you buy your items. Every gold counts and adds up in the long haul. Adding these simple tricks to your weekly routine is sure to make an impact on your income.

Guardian Cub: Legal Gold Buying?

Talk about hot topic! Blizzard recently announced a new vanity pet soon coming to the Blizzard Pet Store. This delightful little Guardian Cub will be available to all players. Like most Pet Store pets it will come with a $10 USD price tag. However, there is a catch involved this time.

When purchasing this pet, it will be delivered to only one character's mail box. Not multiple. Also, it will be a one time only use. So basically, you use it, you lose it. However, more importantly then anything else, it's Bind On Equip. Yes, BoE. Now, for the very first time you can purchase a BoE Vanity item directly from Blizzard.

While purchasable BoE's are not a new addition to Blizzard's repertoire, this is the first time they are the direct provider. It's no secret that people have been spending real money on trading card BoE vanity items and bringing them into the economy for a long time. But this time rather then going to your local card shop or hitting up eBay you can now go directly to Battle.net.

What does this mean for the economy?
It means a lot of different things. The first thing people will jump to when they are reading this is that Blizzard is basically legalizing gold buying. While yes, the pets will have some kind of gold value attached to them depending on your Auction House, it's not to say this is a full dive into micro-transactions. Nor is this going to kill every third party gold supplier. It's merely going to give players a way to safely purchase a small amount of extra capital. At least in the short term.

Since the release of the very first Pet Store pets it's been no secret that players are willing to spend real money on their toons. The same will be seen with the Guardian Cub. However, there can only be so much demand for a vanity pet. If supply of Guardian Cubs out weighs the demand, the Guardian Cub may not be worth so much after all. Sure, I would expect a high dollar amount to begin with, but my best guess is it will die off and level out to a even value. Something around 3,000 - 5,000 gold. Simply because they will only be a credit card swipe away.

Is there now a currency exchange for World of Warcraft Gold?
I've seen this question pop up a lot already on different comment boxes since this announcement. The short answer is no. The reason behind that is because Blizzard still controls all the revenue. There is no way to "Cash Out" your Gold currently like there will be in Diablo III. So while your $10 may buy you a couple thousand gold legally, your gold is still worth it's weight in pixels in USD.

I'll be interesting to see how this plays out, and would like to know your comments and thoughts. This will also surely be a hot topic on the next Auction House Junkies podcast, so be sure to stay tuned for that!

Capped By Cata Site Redesign

I know a lot of you guys only follow the blog through RSS, so I would really like for you to stop by the site and take a look at the new layout. Capped By Cata is once again growing and with fresh content coming down the pipe in 4.3 I wanted to make the site fresh and inviting.

Void Storage: Not the Gold Sink You Hoped For

On Episode 16 of the Auction House Junkies Podcast Cold, Mike and I spoke about Void Storage and the massive gold sink that it could potentially be. We had a long discussion about how it could positively benefit Gold Makers. Or, how gold sinks in general can positively impact an economy. We had high hopes for Void Storage. Initially, it was speculated that Void Storage could cost up to 1,000 gold to unlock and have item fees scaling up to 100 gold per item for deposits and withdrawals. However, those prices are not going to be making it off the PTR. In a Blue Post that dropped last night it was announced that Void Storage cost has been drastically cut. Current pricing structure is as follows:

Unlock: 100 Gold
Deposit: 25 Gold
Withdrawal: 0 Gold

What Does This Mean For A Gold Maker?
It’s a double edged sword in this case. With prices being lowered Void Storage can now be looked at as a viable option for long term storage for all players. Not just the wealthy. This means players who are fresh to the Gold Making game can take advantage of the storage for storing profitable goods without having to remove crafting characters from their guilds to create guild banks. Void Storage is ultimately an answer for those who have had to put all of their alts into mainstream guilds for perks. So if you have all of your crafting alts in your main guild and your banks are full you’ll now be able to look to Void Storage for that long term profiting.

However, there is also the down side. In my opinion, Gold Sinks are great to have in the game. Something large like Void Storage was going to be a great way for Blizzard to remove gold from the economy and fight the rapid inflation that was brought on by Cataclysm and the Obsidium Shuffle. Void Storage or other Gold Sinks eat away at player’s liquid capital. Because most players still do not use the Auction House and crafting skills efficiently, this means that they have to turn to olds methods of obtaining income. Daily quests and farming are the big two. The more players you have farming the higher the supply. If demand is less then supply, prices fall. Raw materials then become more affordable and obtainable for crafters. True Auctioneers can turn that scenario into large profits.

Those are my thoughts on Void Storage. While yes it’s great that all levels of players will now have access to the feature, it’s disappointing that a major potential gold sink isn’t going to come to fruition. What do you guys think?

Patch 4.3: Capitalize on 71 - 80 Experience Decrease

Patch 4.3 is up and running on the PTR and it is bringing a lot of new life back to the World Of Warcraft. From reading the latest happenings in the World Of Warcraft Blogosphere, it seems that there is a lot of excitement behind patch 4.3. A lot more then what we saw when 4.2 hit the PTR. One of the things that is the most exciting to me is the decrease in experience needed to level from 71 -80.

The change will mean all of your alts who are hanging out in the level 71-80 range are going to need to do a lot less work. 33% less to be exact. As a gold maker first and foremost, this is probably the thing I'm the most excited about in patch 4.3. There are two great reasons why.

More Alts!
I have a few alts. Four over the level 60 range. The majority of them are stuck in the Northrend abyss. You know, level 71-80. Northrend is the new place where alts go to die. At least, until now. With the decrease in the amount of experience, it should really make getting those level 75s you have for professions out of Northrend much easier. More alts means more profession slots. As we've talked about numerous times, the more professions you have the more diverse you can be.

Most profession alts fall in one of two categories. Level 65 and level 75. The 65 alts are still living in a Wrath of the Lich King world. Level 65 was all you needed to accomplish max level professions in WotLK. The next category are those who are sitting at level 75. This is the current level needed to obtain 525 in a profession. For those of you at 65, this means it will be much easier to get into the new profession tier. For those at 75, it should really speed up your ability to get to 85. As we saw with the Molten Front, some patterns are blocked by that level barrier. This is bringing that barrier down a notch. You now have no reason to not finish out leveling your alts.

More Demand!
With the experience decrease coming in Patch 4.3 not only profession alts will be leveling up. A lot of players will receive this as there motivation to finish up leveling some alts. With that, you should see a spike in a couple of different areas. First off, your 77-79 Cata gear. Most people are leveling with either the dungeon finder or PvP. So once they hit 80, they are going to need to hit the Auction House to upgrade themselves out of those level 70 PvP epics. If you can find low priced 77-79 gear right now. Buy it. It should make for an easy flip in the coming weeks.

Moreover, you also should see a spike in level 85 crafted gear. Once players hit level 80, they can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of those players will make the final push to 85. Again, those players are going to need gear. 85 crafted gear is going to be the first place they will look. Go ahead and stock up now. About 3-4 weeks into patch 4.3 you should see the first wave of those players hitting 85. If you can buy now while mats are cheaper and store them away, you'll have the best chance.

Blizzard reads my Pro Tips: Direbrew Kills Nerfed

I should have known it was too good to be true. Yesterday I put up a Pro Tip letting everyone know that Coren Direbrew was dropping 20 gold per group member, per kill. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. While I thought it the back of my mind that it could get Nerfed, I wasn't expecting to see it come so quickly. I've looked through several pages of blue posts and can't find anything highlighting it, but I guess I shouldn't expect to.

Congrats to those who got to cash in on some super easy farming. It was a lot of fun killing Direbrew over and over again for 20 gold at time. It even made me spec back to a tank. But alas, my dreams have once again been shattered.

Talk about easy money! I logged in today and a Tankard of Terror was sitting on the Auction House for 7600 gold. Then I realized, it was a Tankard that had a 365 Ilvl. I thought to myself "New 365 DPS Trinket!" So I hop in the queue and do a couple kills. As a tank I was able to instant queue and kill Direbrew over and over with the same group. Queue as DPS, I had almost the same luck but being a tank was a little bit better. After doing about 10 kills focused only on what trinkets were dropping, I noticed that each time I was receiving anywhere from 16g to 22g per kill. I did a double take. It takes roughly 2 minutes or less, start to finish to queue and kill the boss. If you were able to do that for an hour straight, you're looking at a cool 1,200 gold. Sure, that's in a perfect world, but could it really get any easier to make 20 gold?

Screw farming anything for the next 16 days. This is guaranteed 20g on average a kill. If you spent only an hour a day doing this for the next 16 days you would make an easy 19,000 gold. For doing almost nothing! Mix that in with your existing sales, and you're knocking it out of the park.

Well, this has been a busy week in everything else but gold making. With that in mind I wanted to share one of the things I have been doing this week. I've wrote in the past about all of the new 365 item level weapons that came out after patch 4.1. I've been taking advantage of one of these weapons in particular. The tanking sword. I don't know why, but for some reason it seems to sell pretty well. By pretty well, I mean one to two a week.

Obtaining the Materials:
The biggest cost in regards to materials are the 8 truegold bars that you need. The easiest way to come up with these is by using your alchemist army. I have found over the past few weeks that my procs are coming back on truegold. I really think Blizzard pushed the pause button on transmutes right when the new weapons hit the servers. Either that, or I'm a conspiracy theorist. With my three alchemists, I can come up with enough bars for at least 3 of these a week. But more often then not, I make and move two of them. Outside of the cost of the materials the only real cost is the orbs. Since I do not have a Blacksmith that can run heroics, I'm having to buy orbs.

The price of orbs has come down to a much more reasonable price then what I predicted earlier in the patch. I've found myself paying a much more reasonable 250 gold per orb, or 1250 gold per item created.

Because I'm buying the majority of my mats in bulk at a discount, and take advantage of the procs in regards to my alchemists, including the orbs I have only 2,000-3,000 gold on average invested in each item that I craft. I'm currently getting anywhere from 10-14,000 gold per Unbreakable Guardian listed. I don't sell them quickly, but they do sell. Usually on one 48 hour posting cycle.
