On January 7, 1639.the court record refers to the land grant to the first settlers John Crow, Thomas Howes, and Anthony Thacher as "the lands of Mattacheeset, now called Yarmouth". This is considered the first usage of the name.

"Yarmouth" to represent the new township to the east of Barnstable. This name comes from the English township located on the eastern coast of that country, a little over 100 miles north of London .But how was it that the name Yarmouth was selected? After all, none of the three initial settlers hailed from that English town. The first settlers to accompany Crow, Howes, and Thacher came from cities and villages throughout England, though it's believed that not one of them came from Yarmouth. To trace the origin of the name, it is necessary to trace the path of the Pilgrims. After all during that period it was Plimoth Colony that had jurisdiction over which Cape Cod settlements would be incorporated, and by what name those new townships would be known. Yarmouth, England, during the age of the Pilgrims, was an important seaport on the Yare River. Across the North Sea from Yarmouth , to the east is the Netherlands- the former home country of a portion of the Mayflower passengers. These Dutch passengers arrived in England via the port of Yarmouth, and therefore the naming of the new Cape township appears to be the tip of the cap to the English seaport. Or, perhaps Bass River simply reminded the Pilgrims of the river Yare River of their former England. The true reason for the naming of Yarmouth, Cape Cod may never be known. Yarmouth England, incidentally, was known for its fishing and its shipyards. The Germans bombed it over 50 times during World War II killing over 1,000 residents, injuring some 8,000 others, and destroying nearly 4,000 homes. Besides being a major seaport, Yarmouth was also a railways crossroads. In more recent years, brewing and tourism have played a major role in its economy. The population is now a quarter million.

Bass River is an estuary and village in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, United States. The estuary separates the towns of Yarmouth and Dennis at the central, southern sections of the towns. At its widest and most southerly point, it opens to and meets Nantucket Sound. Its brackish, northwestern end flows into Follins Pond, from there winding further north as a brook, then an underground stream that nearly bisects Cape Cod.

The mouth of the river is between Smugglers Beach on the Yarmouth side and West Dennis Beach on the Dennis side. West Dennis beach has become a popular site for kite boarding in the past few years. In the same way Kalmus Beach in Hyannis has become popular for windsurfing. Once inside the river, there is a large land mass covered with sea grass in the middle of which is a large bay. The island is called 'Grass Island' by the locals.

Grass Island separates Bass River into two parts. The right side of the river goes towards West Dennis and the Fingers development. The left side is the main branch of the river passing Windmill Beach, Bass River Yacht Club, and Shipshops Marina. After the marina, the river goes under a large bridge and continues deep into the cape.

Bas River is home to a friendly rivalry between West Dennis Yacht Club and the Bass River Yacht Club. These clubs also compete against Hyannis Yacht Club, Wianno Yacht Club, and others in the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association team racing circuit. The Yarmouth shores are home to Bass River Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the town of Yarmouth.

"Sumptuous" is the only way to describe this 1845 inn, improbably set amid a peaceful garden, a block off bustling Route 28. A skilled interior decorator has combined fine antiques and striking contemporary touches to lift this inn's interiors way above the average homey B&B decor. Some suites are apartment-size, containing sitting rooms equipped with a fireplace, and whirlpool-tub bathrooms bigger than the average bedroom. Next door, the 1825 Elisha Jenkins House contains an additional large suite with its own sun deck. Welcoming touches in rooms include chocolates, fresh flowers, and plush robes. Breakfast consists of three courses served in the formal dining room or the sunny courtyard. The central location puts the entire Cape , from Woods Hole to Provincetown , within a 45-minute drive, assuming you can tear yourself from this pampering environment.

There is a point where a house approaches a work of art, and the Captain Farris House is such a case. This jewel of a house was built in 1845 in a historic section of South Yarmouth known as Bass River. This former sea captain's house was purchased in 2005 by Michael & Nancy Lumia. A perfect blend of antique and contemporary, the inn has eight magnificent rooms, each one a romantic getaway, lovingly detailed with modern amenities; private baths, some with two person Jacuzzis; beautiful antique king or queen-size beds; cable TVs with VCR and in-house videos; bathrobes; and window air conditioning units. Two suites upstairs feature sunken bathrooms, queen-size beds, living rooms, and upscale European flair. One room offers a queen-size four-poster bed, Jacuzzi, and a walk-out sundeck. The Captain Farris House is in the National Register of Historic Places and exudes all the warmth and color you expect in a top-notch bed and breakfast. Full gourmet three-course breakfasts are served either in the dining room or in the glass enclosed courtyard. Afternoon refreshments are also served. Next door is the Elisha Jenkins House, which has two huge suites. The inn is Early February to Mid December, and children 11 and older are welcome.
