Description:

Disney Universe is the latest video game from Disney and provides a whirlwind adventure that sees you suit up as your favourite Disney characters and enter into different Disney worlds.

Suit up as Stitch and play through a selection of Lion King levels. Take on the persona of the charming Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean and battle your way through Monster’s, Inc. In the Disney Universe game the choice is yours and this is the first time ever where different Disney worlds collide in a mix of Mischief, Madness and Mayhem.

The back-story of the Disney Universe game centres around Wonder Labs, a company that has created a “virtual world” called Disney Universe. You, as a player, are invited to experience this new “virtual world” and see the mix of different Disney worlds and character costumes. Things don’t quite go to plan though. Your trusty guide VIC (Virtual Information Cube) is hacked into and his alter-ego HEX starts to upset the balance inside the Disney Universe “virtual world” by setting the minions against the players and creating power-ups that have negative effects on the player.

The Disney Universe game is an action-adventure game with a structure of playing through multiple Disney “worlds”. Each world has 3 zones and each zone has 3 levels so for every Disney “world” included, you get 9 areas to work your way through.

Whether you are playing on your own or playing with friends (up to 4 players) the format of the Disney Universe game is the same; co-operate to complete puzzles and challenges or compete to earn the most points and bonuses.

As you progress through the levels and worlds you will unlock new Disney costumes to suit up in and these you can purchase from the main menu using the gold coins you collect in each level. Once you’ve unlocked and bought a costume you are free to suit up as that Disney character and continue the action!

Where to get your pre-owned Wii games?

I don't really have the money to buy new Wii titles (I suspect I'm not alone!), so usually browse the pre-owned games sections to see if there are any bargains. I've noticed recently that Game's prices for second-hand Wii games are usually better than HMV's at the moment (not the conclusion of an in-depth study by myself I grant you, just observations of browsing both shops - which are practically next to each other at The Fort Shopping Centre).

Recently got The Bigs 2, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and Medieval Games for a grand total of £17.97. Not bad... reviews soon!

Grand Slam Tennis - Online

Had some really great matches in Grand Slam Tennis online recently, have still lost more than I've won (16-31 currently... d'oh), and some opponents just seem too good to be real, but I have to say that some of the closely balanced matches have been thoroughly enjoyable, even if I've lost (congrats to the Spanish guy who beat me 14-12 in a tie-break yesterday, btw!). Some people have used really strange tactics at times, it's more like a mind game sometimes. Anyway, I'm starting to feel that the AI should have a Very Hard difficulty level since Hard just doesn't provide a decent challenge anymore - but then again, maybe that's why I'm spending more time with it online.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

Ever since it all started a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away with LEGO Star Wars, the LEGO games have always been great fun to play (though I have yet to get my hands on the latest few - LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars: The Clone Wars or LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean). They are a great combination of instinctive arcade game and action puzzler, and each game brings in new elements or changes certain aspects of the existing game play mechanics. In LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean you replay scenes from all four of the movies, and can control one of seventy different characters from the movies. Not entirely sure what's really new in this one, but the essential game play with its fun combat, platforming and puzzle-solving will of course be there. The graphics seem to improve with each new LEGO game, and co-op game play is always hugely enjoyable.

Of course with Pirates of the Caribbean you have the advantage of some outlandish characters anyway - not only Jack Sparrow but a whole host of others (whose names I forget right now, but I'm sure you've all got your own favourite characters from the films). Hopefully Travellers Tales Games have managed to eradicate their habit of releasing Wii Games that could still do with some extra bug-testing - I certainly hope so, as in all other ways it looks like being a great game.

Michael Jackson - The Experience

Of all the Wii Games I've seen recently, few strike me as games I'm less likely to play than The Experience! Still, the enduring popularity of the singer means it has been a great commercial success. In fact it's been in the UK (and other countries') top ten Wii game best sellers for about 4 months now! That's what you call consistency...

So if you think you're bad and that this game will be a real thriller, it doesn't matter if you're black or white, you're probably going to want this game.

Advanced Sewing Simulator – Darn! And sew, of course. Complete mighty quests involving sock repair, cross stitch patterns, and all the fun of being a seamstress! Some risk of injury on higher levels. Cordless Wiimote attachment recommended.

Cooking Master – Can’t cook, or won’t cook? Either way, now you don’t have to go near real food to experience the joy of cooking (without the calories!). Use the Wiimote as a rolling pins, grind garlic by simulating the pestle and mortar with your Wiimote / nunchuck; added fun and challenge can be obtained by wearing oven gloves while you play! Vegetable chopping mini-game included. Chef’s hat optional.

Gardening Supremo – It isn’t easy being a gardener, as you’ll find out in this invigorating game. Swat those pesky flies! Aim your pesticide! Dig holes and then carefully plant your seedlings!

Virtua Plumber – think you’ve got what it takes to be a professional plumber? Face the challenge of tricky plumber’s mate wrapping, unblocking toilets you’d rather not go near and of course that all-time favourite, unblocking the sink with a plunger! (Wiimote plunger attachment available.)

Semaphore Hero – an educational game in which you learn to signal in semaphore like a real… er… semaphore signaller. Emulate your favourite real-life semaphore heroes like… like… oh, I give up.

Mario Sports Mix

Mario Sports Mix Wii is due to hit the UK shelves on 4th February 2011 (having been released in Japan on 26th November and in Australia today – 27th January) , and is developed by legendary software house Square Enix. With such a multitude of sporting titles for the Wii, this game turns its back on featuring a huge number of names, focusing on just four – volleyball, dodgeball, baseball and hockey. Each of these games can be played by one to four players. Players can choose from a number of popular characters who’ve previously featured in the Mario games, or use their Miis to compete. Each sporting event has a few mushroom power-ups available, which can turn things to your favour – or against them – very quickly. Not sure if this counts as using drugs to enhance your sporting prowess – I mean, magic mushrooms?!?

Er, anyway... to make things more interesting, each character also has their own special move (not entirely sure if you get to choose a special move if you use a Mii though?). There are a number of different venues in the game, and they don’t merely change the aesthetics of your surroundings – they can actually have a genuine effect on the sport being played. The examples given by Nintendo are conveyor belts that affect how the players move on court in the Wario Factory and fountains that go up and down, occasionally blocking the ball while you play volleyball.

Even though I have several sports-themed Wii games already, Mario Sports Mix is one of the few games I’d be willing to consider shelling out good money for in the early part of 2011. We shall see...

Hello Kitty Seasons for Nintendo Wii

Having a baby daughter is wonderful, but when she gets a bit older I shall no doubt be subjected to the full horror of things like Hello Kitty Wii. Unless I've not been paying attention (which, to be fair, I haven't), Hello Kitty is something that's never quite gained the same popularity in the UK as it appears to have in some other countries. The Hello Kitty game features all the characters from the animated series – which apparently include Badtz-Maru, Chococat, Dear Daniel, Pochacco and Usahana. It’s described as a “game filled with fun and action, in which players shop for gifts and visit friends all over the Hello Kitty world, and take on a range of challenging mini-games”.

The full title of the game is Hello Kitty Seasons and is the first Hello Kitty game to be released for the Nintendo Wii (no doubt it won’t be the last!). The game is set in Sanrio Town, which changes as the seasons turn, and this in turn unlocks new missions and challenges for the player. (Thus the name “Hello Kitty Seasons”, I guess...)

Features:

- See Sanrio Town in every season: unique look and challenges for winter, spring, summer, and autumn

- Play dozens of mini games and missions to upgrade your town

- Avatar customization and improvement

- Multiplayer: players compete with each other

It’s not entirely clear how much use of the Wii’s controller technology Hello Kitty Seasons will make, but I’m pretty sure it will have a host of fans in the pre-teen range before long!

I wonder how old my baby will be when she starts to develop an interest in Wii games? Maybe she'll be smarter than her daddy and ignore video games altogether! Then again...
