Turbochargers and supercharges, as you may know, are great for boosting power and torque. But both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Turbochargers are somewhat unpredictable and can prone to boost spikes if not set up properly, suffer from lag and can be difficult to maintain, but are easy to install and offer great power gains.

Supercharges on the other hand, can be cumbersome and don’t offer as much power as turbochargers, but they are very linear in their power delivery and less prone to boost spikes.

Put the two together and what you could end up with is a lag free, boosted powerhouse of an engine.

It has to be said however, idea of a Super-Turbo engine is not new. Nissan fitted a supercharged and turbocharged engine in a Nissan March in 1989 and named it the march SuperTurbo. Lancia Delta S4 used to run supercharged and turbocharged engines as well. These lightweight monsters (most weighed less than 1000kg) were capable of 500-600bhp and driving them took a great amount of skill and testicles the size of basketballs.

First the turbocharger and supercharger is a TD05 from an Evo 3 and the supercharger was plucked from a Toyota, presumably from the popular 4A-GZE engine. This GTi also Features not one, but two intercoolers. For the turbocharger, a generic brand Evo sized intercooler sits behind the front bumper and the supercharger’s intake charge is cooled by a top mount intercooler from a Pulsar GTi-R.

As the engine runs, so does the supercharger. As the revs climb, so does the boost from the supercharger, then at about 3500-4000rpm, the TD05 begins to come alive and the results is a satisfying and responsive 224bhp at the wheels. Fueling is taken care of by high flow injectors and a Walbro fuel pump. Intake air is filtered by a UR steel mesh air filter and freeing up exhaust gas flow is a custom 3-inch exhaust system. Engine management is taken care of by an OBIT piggyback ECU and an ECU from a lancer EVO II.

With 224bhp to handle, the gearbox needs some work to withstand the wrath of all the power and torque. The clutch has been replaced with a beefier item from Exedy and LSD was fitted to help with traction.

Suspension is also an area which needs to be looked at with all that extra power. Coming to rescue of this overpowered GTi are WHL shock absorbers, paired with TEIN springs.

On the outside, the GTi retains its factory looks, making this car the ultimate sleeper. The only things which would tipd you off that this GTi is like no other, are the bonnet scoop and the intercooler inside the front hood is a carbon fibre item which has been painted to much the rest of the car for the ‘undercover’ style.
