Fire risk recall for Kia’s Sorento and Soul.

Kia is recalling over 500 of its Sorentos and Souls built between September 2009 and June this year due to a potential wiring problem.

A fault has been identified in the wiring of the “mood lighting” found in the doors and there is a small danger of the wiring overheating, which could cause a fire.

Hamish McCowan is the after-sales and logistics Director for Kia Motors (UK) Ltd and has said “We are not aware of any vehicles in the UK suffering from this problem, but we believe it is better to be safe, and that is why we are taking this recall action.

‘The risk of a fire is small and would only occur under extreme circumstances, but we want to make sure none of our customers are anxious about the safety of their vehicles’.

AA says motorists accept speed cameras.

AA has warned that the recent UK’s speed camera switch off, caused by the slashing of road safety budgets could actually put more lives at risk.

It seems that the views of motorists are not being correctly reflected in the speed camera debate and that the speed camera switch off could create a public backlash rather than win their hearts.

According to a recent survey by 15,000 AA members, 69% accept the use of cameras, while local residents in Oxfordshire (near the first switch off) report that speeds have already increased.

The government’s announcement that there is to be no new funding for fixed speed cameras and a 37% cut in road safety budgets has led AA to believe that this will in turn cost lives. AA have said that cameras have a vital role to play in safety as there is an 80% chance a pedestrian will be killed by a car travelling at 40mph, compared with a survival rate of 80% if the car is travelling at 30mph.

These issues have been raised in a letter from AA to the Transport Secretary Philip Hammond and says the speed camera switch off will be discussed with ministers in a meeting soon.

Ford’s mirror based satellite-navigation system.

A new sat-nav system has been launched which fits alongside the rear view mirror and is now available from Ford dealers.

Mirror Navi which fits all Ford models costs £299 plus fitting and allows the driver to see the navigation system at the same time as checking the rear view.

The new system that can be fitted by a Ford dealer in less than an hour has a 3.5- inch screen, colour display with 2D or 3D mapping.

Ford have confirmed that it is classed as a fitted navigation system for insurance purposes which could help to reduce premiums.

Hyundai ix20 to be revealed at Paris show.

Hyundai is to launch the ix20 a new mini-MPV to rival the Citroen C3 and Nissan Note at the Paris motor show this month.

The ix20 is the Company’s second car after the ix35 crossover to adopt its “fluidic sculpture” which has been designed and developed in Germany.

It is expected to go on sale this November and as yet Hyundai have only issued this initial sketch of the car which adopts a dynamic and sporty profile. Hyundai have said the car will be both practical and fun to drive.
