I have worked for chiropractors, lawyers, and referral services for the last ten years helping Car Accident Victims Recover from one of the most traumatizing experiences they will ever face:  A car accident.  What has amazed me more than anything else is how so many other aspects of a car accident take priority for a car accident victim over the most important thing they should be worried about:  Thier health!  The exception to this frame of thought is when a serious injury or even a fatality occurs.  Think about it though, if there isn’t immediate and severe pain, broken bones, blood, or severed body parts, most car accident victims, at fault or not, seem to first worry about their vehicle and everything that is associated with it, not having it, or not having it looking absolutely flawless.  What most fail to realize at that particular moment immediatley following the car accident, is that no matter what happens to the car, the other driver, the police, or thier job, nothing will matter if thier physical health begins to impede thier day to day lives.  Last time I check, it is very difficult to perform the most routine of daily activities, including driving a car, with a stiff neck or a painful back, but nevertheless, I constantly find myself taking calls from Car Accident Victims who are worried about everything but seeing a doctor.

I think the problem starts at the scene of the car accident.  To begin with, the collision itself besides causing property damage and serious personal injury causes shock, increased heart beat, and a rush of adrenaline.  I can say this based of my own experience being behind the wheel in several collisions in my lifetime.  If the injuries or complaints are serious enough, then the emergency paramedics take over and the injured parties are transported to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment.  What happens more often then not though is that the paramedics give accident victims the choice of whether or not they want to go to the hospital and get checked if there are no obvious or visual injuries and if the accident victim makes no complaint of any injury.  The problem with this is that as an emergency paramedic, you are asking someone who is probably in shock, overcome with adrenaline, frustrated, aggravated, and worried about who is at fault, to make an immediate decision about the one thing they may not be feeling at that particular instant: Pain.  The problem is that most minor or “soft tissue” injuries involve symptoms that are felt either six hours or even six days later.  I compare these type of injuries to playing football on sunday and not really being sore until monday morning.  I know that in my case that I passed on going to the hospital to avoid the 6 hour waiting period often associated with visiting the emergency room  with a non-life threatening injury.  Im pretty sure other car accident victims share this sentiment.  Even when a Car Accident Victim does go to the hospital, if there aren’t any life threatening injuries, broken bones, blood, or severed body parts, you are simply examined, given medication for any pain, advised to seek follow up care if necessary, and sent home. 

Then of course when there is a problem with dealing with the insurance company, a question of fault, or anything else but an injury, a car accident victim quickly begins to search for an attorney…The only problem with this is that most car accident attorneys are PERSONAL INJURY attorneys and are only concerned with injured car accident victims.  I can’t blame them really because a big part of recovering thier paycheck in Car Accident Cases is proving that their client has a permanent injury that will affect thier lives long-term… So with this in mind, as a Car Accident Victim, it really wouldn’t make sense to contact a car accident attorney before verifying that you first have an injury and second, figure out the extent of this injury.  Since most car accident victims aren’t doctors, it would make sense to let a doctor who is experienced in these type of injuries, make this determination for you…

I personally recommend that every Car Accident Victim go the Emergency Room or at least an Urgent Care or Walk-In Facility immediately following Car Accident just to get checked out at a minimum.  Lets remember that above everything else, our health is first and foremost.  Slow down, the damage is already done to the car and can be fixed, the courts can decide who is at fault, and everything else can wait.  TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH.  You can’t live a normal life without it…
