Bulgaria 'Survivor' Contestant Dies in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine police say a contestant of the Bulgarian reality show "Survivor" has died of a heart attack while filming on an island beach.

Police say the 53-year-old Noncho Vodenicharov died Saturday despite efforts by a Filipino and a Bulgarian doctor to save him.

Chief Inspector Hilario Lelis Are said Monday that Vodenicharov had just finished an activity for the contest at the Gota Beach Resort in Caramoan township in eastern Camarines Sur province.

Bulgarian news reports say he was a town mayor and a former stunt man and singer.

"Survivor" originated in the U.S. but other countries have created their own versions of the popular show. Contestants compete in a variety of tough physical challenges until there is a sole winner.

Now It's SURVIVOR BULGARIA!!

I was so priviledged to have been able to set foot at Gota Village last April 29, 2009 even though the waves at Gota is super strong (access was almost impossible). Don't get me wrong! Gota Village is still not accessible for tourists, I was just so lucky because my guests had special permit to access the beach.

Gota Village was so quiet when I arrived, the reason - Survivor Israel left a few days ago. Their filming ended last April 20, 2009. When I asked the Officer-In-Charge of Gota Village if the place will soon be open to the public - this is his answer, "After Survivor Israel is Survivor Bulagaria".

In fact, last April 29 was the arrival of the first batch of the Survivor Bulagaria staff and crew. They will be there to prepare everything for the actual filming of the famous international series. I again asked if the filming would end by July 2009. His answer, "With the arrival of the the 3rd "Survivor" filming, Gota will again be closed to public until maybe August to Septermber 2009".

First it was Survivor France, then Survivor Israel, now Survivor Bulgaria! They are invading Caramoan - what are you waiting for?? Don't be the last to see Philippines' Secret Paradise!

Catanduanes: Jump-Off Point to Caramoan

Finally, Cebu Pacific Airlines is flying to Virac beginning February 14.

To jumpstart its expansion to this corner of Bicol, it is offering P500 "all-in" seats for flights from Feb. 14 to March 31, the offer good until the end of this month only.

The long-awaited entry of the budget airline finally makes it a three-cornered fight among the airlines servicing Catandunganons. Air commuters should expect on-time flights, fewer cancellations on account of "aircraft situation," and a choice between the promos the three airlines would most likely offer. Booking by internet or phone would grow, as it would save ticket buyers the service charge land-based ticketing offices usually charge.

This welcome development should position Catanduanes well as the jump-off point to the now-famed island resorts in Caramoan, Camarines Sur and perk up the local tourism industry as well. Local officials should now sit down with tourism stakeholders and do what needs to be done in preparing the people, particularly transport groups and lodging houses, for bigger tourist arrivals.

However, there’s a word of caution from Capt. Ivanhoe Arcilla, formerly of Asian Spirit and now of ZestAir. Says he in an email: "As far as I know, Catanduanes is a ‘one-airline destination.’ In my humble opinion, the overcapacity that CebuPac will add to Palexpress and ZestAir services on the route will produce traffic and revenue levels substantially below break even for all three carriers. This may result in the other carriers pulling out, raising the specter of severe price hikes by the remaining carrier as the monopoly provider."

‘Survivor’ boosts Bicol tourism

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines -- French tourist arrivals in the Bicol region grew more than 20 times, from 912 in the first two quarters of 2007 to 21,247 during the same period this year, thanks to the filming there of the “Survivor” reality TV show, the Department of Tourism (DoT) here said.

"This is an astounding leap," said Maria Ong-Ravanilla, Bicol tourism regional director, attributing this to the filming of the French edition of the popular reality game show early this year in Caramoan town in Camarines Sur.

France was fifth in terms of tourist arrivals in Bicol in 2007 but suddenly climbed to the top spot, placing the United States second with 11,847, Japan with 5,032, Germany with 2,844, and Australia with 2,385.

Ravanilla said the breakthrough in tourist arrivals is expected to secure a spot for Bicol as one of the country's top tourist destinations.

In 2007, she said the Bicol region ranked sixth among other regions with total tourist arrivals of 897,680. Bicol was seventh in 2006 and ninth in 2004 and 2005.

Top tourist attractions in Bicol are Donsol town's whaleshark interaction in Sorsogon, Albay's Mayon Volcano, and the Camarines Sur’s Water Sports Complex in Pili town.

Ravanilla added that for the first two quarters of 2008, the tourism industry earned a gross income of around P305 million and generated a total of 198,539 jobs.

"Our gross receipts amounted to around P443 million for the whole of 2007, but now, for only the first two quarters of 2008, we have already earned 69 percent of that," Ravanilla said.

The French Survivor started airing in the first week of July and has been viewed by some 10 million viewers from French-speaking countries in Europe and Canada.

Caramoan Peninsula, which was known to only to backpackers before it was used as a location for Survivor France, boasts powdery white sand beaches and crystal blue waters, rock formations and rich flora and fauna.

They fell asleep in the long travel from Manila to Naga (8 hours). They were carried by the locals to and from the boat. Their butt hurt during the 2 hour hot and jam packed ferry boat ride. They boarded a very sturdy but overloaded tricycle.

The real adventure is just about to start...

The sun kissed them in every moment. They walked sweaty just to reach the cave. They fell in mud. They got dirty spelunking and with shaky knees they continued to hike to be with Mary - to see the beauty of the paradise they are into.

They dipped in the most beautiful island beaches they have ever been to - they explored and they trodded. Amused that they were a part of the wondrous creation.

Caramoan Finds Fame, Tourists on YouTube, ‘Survivor’

POWDERY WHITE SAND, CRYSTAL blue waters, lush vegetation, rock formations, marine life and, yes, fabulous sunsets—these are scenes from “Koh-Lanta Caramoan,” the French edition of the popular TV reality game show “Survivor,” shot entirely in the Caramoan Peninsula in Camarines Sur and now showing on YouTube.

Another website features a breathtaking view of Caramoan from a helicopter—the contestants’ first glimpse of the peninsula. Other tourist spots in the country are featured like Mayon Volcano in Bicol, the Banaue Rice Terraces, Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and Donsol, which is promoting itself as the butanding (whale shark) capital of the world.

Caramoan has been getting a lot of attention since the French edition of “Survivor” started airing in the first week of July. Already, tour packages to the peninsula’s white sand beaches and pristine islands, have proliferated on the Net.

YouTube user “TomFRules” has listed 10 of the peninsula’s best islands and beaches in his clip titled “10 reasons to go to Caramoan.” Internet-savvy Kristina Gadaingan, who hails from Bicol but works in Manila, has already seen some episodes of the latest season of “Survivor-France” on YouTube.

10M viewers
She is excited to see the show because it was shot entirely in Caramoan, touted as the next Boracay. “I’ve always wanted to go to places like Boracay or Palawan. I never knew there’s such a beautiful place close to home,” says Gadaingan of Legazpi City.

“Koh-Lanta Caramoan” started airing this month in French-speaking countries across Europe and in Canada. At least 10 million people are expected to watch “Survivor-France.” Filipinos, who may not be able to see the French edition of the reality game show, are turning to the Internet to access what they can through the popular video-sharing site, YouTube.

Early post
A quick search of YouTube listed several interesting videos—some are trailers of the French reality game show while others are clips from actual episodes. One of the earliest clips which was posted by user “kohlanta20081,” a week after the pilot episode aired in the first week of July, has been suspended, probably due to copyright infringement. Another user, “kohlanta20083,” has posted two 30-second teasers of the latest episodes last Tuesday. No one knows, however, how long this could evade copyright watchdogs.

YouTube user “danymous” has posted random video clips of Caramoan, added some music and the result is a music video showcasing the peninsula’s scenery—a musical virtual tour, so to speak.

Poor town hopeful
With all the exposure Caramoan has been getting, Mayor Constantino Cordial Jr. says he foresees his fourth-class municipality achieving second-class status within five to 10 years.
According to Cordial, Caramoan residents are also looking forward to the P320-million infrastructure projects pledged by President Macapagal-Arroyo through the Camarines Sur provincial government.

According to the mayor, the amount will cover expenses for the road networking, seaport repair and airport construction. “We are in favor of all the development projects. But we have only one plea—that nature be preserved at its best,” says Cordial in a mobile phone interview.
Gota beach, which was closed to the public by the provincial government last summer because of the “Survivor” taping, has been reopened to the public.

However, Caramoan residents are now charged an entrance fee of P150 and tourists, P300. Cordial says the amount is quite expensive especially for the locals. Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymund Villafuerte has said that once development projects are in place, the entrance to Gota beach may not always be free. He also says Caramoan residents will benefit from the development of Gota beach in terms of employment opportunities.

Second time
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, during his visit to Caramoan on May, said this was the second time “Survivor-France” chose the Philippines for its location.

“Survivor,” a popular TV reality game show produced in many countries, isolates its contestants in the wilderness to compete for cash and prizes. They are divided into tribes and they vote off other contestants until only one is left. The show is known to choose locations in exotic environments. Last year, “Survivor-France” was shot in Palawan and after it was aired, the number of French tourists arriving in Palawan increased by 23 percent, Durano said.

The tourism industry is anticipating a “surge” in tourist arrivals as the French edition of the “Survivor” TV reality game show, shot on Caramoan Island off Camarines Sur, begins airing this month in Europe, Canada and other French-speaking nations.

Caramoan, a previously little-known tourist destination, caught the attention of the media in February when the show started filming there. The island will be showcased in the latest season of the French “Survivor” called “Koh-Lanta Caramoan,” which will air until September. Last March, the Caramoanons and the tourists who went to visit and experience Caramoan cannot understand why they were not allowed to go to Gota Beach and several islands within the Paniman vicinity.

There were lots of rumors but no one would want to confirm. Everybody just noticed lots of non-English speaking caucasians hanging around at La Casa Roa Hostel and roaming around at the poblacion.

The answer: Survivor French Edition (Koh-Lanta Caramoan) started filming.

Alas! The filming ended last May. All the beautiful island beaches were finally open to the public! The shoot which lasted for about 3 months is will premier July 4. The show will run until September. It is expected to reach seven million viewers in France, Belgium, Switzerland and other French speaking countries.

4th Class Town Well On Its Way To Celeb Status

CARAMOAN, CAMARINES SUR—It was not too long ago that only backpackers and the locals knew of this remote peninsula’s pristine beaches.

But the fourth-class municipality is expected to achieve celebrity status soon enough, with foreign productions completing filming and development projects in place. Even now it is being touted as the next Boracay.

About 10 million TV viewers in Europe and Canada are expected to watch the French edition of “Survivor,” which was shot entirely on Caramoan’s white-sand beaches. The eighth season of “Survivor-France” will be aired in France and other French-speaking nations like Switzerland, Belgium and Canada from July to September, their summer season. “Survivor,” a popular reality game show that isolates its contestants in the wilderness to compete for cash and prizes, is known to choose locations in exotic environments.

Gota beach, the gateway to Caramoan’s other beaches and islets, was rented for exclusive use by the French production outfit starting late February until early this month. According to “Survivor-France” TV director Corinne Vaillant, the powdery sand, the coconuts on Gota beach and the neighboring islets are a “dream” for the French people.

“We chose Caramoan because it’s really wide. It’s necessary that contestants don’t see anything other than nature for them to believe that they’re really lost in the wilds,” Vaillant told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net). With the filming completed, members of the production crew prepared to leave Gota beach Wednesday.

Overnight stay

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, some Cabinet officials and congressmen visited Caramoan on Monday and stayed overnight at Gota beach. Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, who was in Ms Arroyo’s party, said the wide viewership of “Survivor” would surely boost tourism in Caramoan. Durano said it was the first time in the TV show’s history that two seasons were consecutively shot in one country.

2 Hollywood films?

He said the seventh season of “Survivor-France” was filmed in Palawan last year, and that after it was aired, the number of tourists arriving in the province from France alone was up by 23 percent.

While the Department of Tourism, which brought “Survivor-France” to Caramoan, shouldered the fuel cost to keep the location powered with electricity, the provincial government took care of the development of the site.

There are now 73 foldaway cabanas at Gota beach, imported from China and worth P60,000 each, said a source who asked not to be named for lack of authority to speak to the media. A total of 20 regular-sized cabanas can be assembled by two teams in a day. Ms Arroyo stayed in one of the largest cabanas during her overnight stay, the source said.

Filipinos in crew

One of 10 Filipinos hired as production assistants in “Survivor-France” told the Inquirer that the work was a demanding and challenging experience. “We also had to hop with the whole production team from one beach or islet to another,” said the man, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was bound by a confidentiality agreement. He said Gota beach was tightly guarded to keep kibitzers away, and that the production assistants were among the few who were able to see the contestants being filmed.

“Survivor-France” also hired more than 120 laborers and visual artists, the source said. He said the laborers were paid P250 a day; the visual artists, as much as P800 a day; and the production assistants, at least P1,000 a day.

P20M to prov’l gov’t

A source close to Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr. said “Survivor-France” reportedly paid the provincial government P20 million for the exclusive use of Caramoan’s beaches.

The memorandum of agreement to develop and manage Gota beach was signed between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the provincial government, and the municipal government apparently does not have a share in the revenue.

The provincial government gained the right to manage and administer the Caramoan National Park, specifically Gota beach, which covers about 298 hectares, at the signing of the MOA on March 16, 2005, according to a copy of the agreement furnished the Inquirer. The signatories were then Environment Secretary Michael Defensor (for the DENR-Protected Area Management Board) and Villafuerte (for Camarines Sur).

Durano thinks there is nothing wrong with the agreement. “Well, the municipality is under the province, right? So the local leaders here and the provincial government would just have to talk about it.”

In a phone interview late last month, Villafuerte said Caramoan residents stood to benefit from the development of Gota beach in terms of employment opportunities and infrastructure. He said the provincial government was implementing a P200-million development plan in Caramoan, which included road networking and the construction of an airport.

The governor also said “two Hollywood films were in the works for possible shooting” on Caramoan’s beaches. With no filming contracts in the meantime, he said Gota beach would be reopened to the public in June.

Rumors

There’s a chance that the American edition of “Survivor” will be filmed next in Caramoan, according to an employee of the provincial government who was at Gota beach preparing for Ms Arroyo’s visit on Monday. But the employee, who refused to give her name, said nothing had been finalized.

As for talk of Hollywood stars, reportedly including California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, coming to shoot, a ranking officer of Gota beach could only flash a noncommittal smile.

Villafuerte had earlier said that Caramoan could be the next Boracay, with a difference: Development projects would be carefully planned so it would not become like the now world-famous resort—“overloaded” and plagued with sewage problems.

Don’t overdevelop

But Durano said it would not do justice to Caramoan if it would be viewed only from the Boracay perspective. “We should always improve on what we have based on what we’ve learned from [tourist] destinations. Maybe we should say that this will be better than Boracay,” he said.

Durano also said it was important that development be done slowly. “Since nature is the main asset and attraction here, it must be preserved. Everyone must be careful not to overdevelop the place.”

5. What should we bring on our stay at Caramoan?
Backpackers are expected to bring the following:

- For Overnight stay at the island - complete camping gear (tent, insect repellent, match)
- Lots of sunblock
- Comfortable shoes for spelunking, beach slippers,
- Bring first aid kits (no nearby hospitals and clinics)
- Digicam and Video Recorder (be sure to protect these gadgets from moist)
- Flashlights for spelunking
- Lots of water (for overnight at islands)

6. Are there resorts, hotels and restaurants?
Caramoan Peninsula is a beauty unexploited from commercial tourism. As of today, there are no resorts, hotels and restaurants. However, the town offers small inns (Rex Tourist Inn & La Casa Roa Hostel) and decent eateries (that serves local dishes) that will accomodate backpackers and tourists. The town promotes home-stay wherein locals accomodate tourists and visitors.

7. What are the delicacies that Caramoan can offer?
Bicol food is something to look forward to. The place offers very distinctive Bicolano dishes - gata (coconut milk) and sili (hot chili peppers). Try the authentic Bicol Express, Laing, Pinangat and Kinunot.

8. Do local diners serve other meals aside from Bicol dishes?
Enjoy fresh seafood catch like fattened crabs (alimango), and fish. Local eateries also serves other Filipino dishes.

9. Is Caramoan a good place for snorkeling and scuba diving?
The Aguirangan Island boasts of diverse marine life and colorful coral reefs. This 1.5 hectare island is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you plan on scuba diving, assistance from a certfied scuba diver is recommended.

10. Is there a dive shop that can provide diving gears?
The nearest dive shop is hours away - at Naga City. If you plan on scuba diving, I suggest that you bring your own scuba gears and equipment or rent it out at Naga City before coming over at Caramoan. Bring complete scuba diving gears and several nitrox tank. There are no air and nitrox refilling station at Caramoan.

11. How is communication at Caramoan?
There are no landlines at Caramoan. At the poblacion you can easily make a call and receive sms using mobile phone service from Smart Communications (but their services are not available at the island beaches). You can sometimes use services from Globe Communications and Sun Cellular. Other communication is via Smart Link Satellite, and VHP & UHF Radio.

12. Is there Wifi or Internet access at Caramoan?
There is no Wifi at Caramoan. There is just one Internet Cafe, but the internet connection is not reliable. To get really good connection - just go to the nearest town (2hours away).

13. How do locals (Caramoanons) maintain the beauty of Caramoan?
Caramoanons are very proud of their town. They protect the beauty of Caramoan. The tourists are also expected to do the same. The tourists are not allowed to leave their trash in any of the islands and caves they will visit. Tourists are requested to help maintain its beauty.

Strong Thrust for Caramoan Tourism

CARAMOAN, CAM. SUR – Town officials and residents here are deeply appreciative of the tourism-related projects here of Camarines Sur Gov. L-Ray Villafuerte which include the on-going construction of hotel facilities, concreting of road to Gota Beach and completion of a presidential bridge to the resort area.

Class hotel facilities are now being built at Honongan Beach while dozens of cabanas or cottages for tourists are under construction near Gota Beach.

Only the proposed airport alongside the town poblacion in 103 hectares is being opposed by various sectors of the community including the municipal government.

GMA Releases P50M For Caramoan Road Project

VIRAC, Catanduanes -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Monday, announced the release of an additional P50 million funding to finance the completion of the Caramoan Peninsula road network project in Camarines Sur.

The road project covering a 27-kilometer stretch would link the towns of Caramoan and Presentacion, which in the past had no road facilities, except through sea transportation.

The chief executive said the P50 additional fund release would add to the P250 million road construction project earlier released making the total project cost at P300 million.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, the completion of the road network would connect Caramoan town to Presentacion which links to Lagonoy town and other major road networks in Camarines Sur.

PGMA Declares Caramoan Islands As Tourist Zones

Six white beach islands off the coast of the Caramoan Peninsula in Camarines Sur province have been declared recently as tourist zones by virtue of Republic Act (RA) No. 9445.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed into law last May 9, 2007 RA No. 9445 naming the islands of Lahuy, Cotivas, Guinahuan, Luksuhin, Malibagon and Masag, located off the northern coast of Caramoan town as national tourism zones.

Re-elected Congressman Noli Fuentebella of the 3rd district of Camarines Sur, who is the principal sponsor of the newly enacted law, said RA No. 9445 directs the Department of Tourism (DOT), its attached agencies and the Partido Development Authority (PDA) to come up with a tourism development plan for the Caramoan islands.

Fuentebella said the Caramoan islands’ tourism development plan will include the protection and enhancement of the natural features and cultural heritage of the tourist zones and provide a sustainable economic opportunities for the communities in the areas.

RA No. 9445 requires the PDA and the Caramoan local government unit (LGU) to implement and enforce the tourism development plan once completed.

Fuentebella said the law also directs the Tourism department and its attached agencies to assist the LGU by providing it with the needed technical and financial assistance to develop tourism infrastructure and skills.

Moreover, the DOT is also mandated to include in its program the promotion, locally and internationally, of the tourist zones.

The law enjoins the DOT, PDA and the LGU to encourage the private sector, non-government organizations and other groups to invest in the declared tourist zones in Caramoan, Fuentebella said.

The Camarines Sur solon filed the bill declaring the six Caramoan islands as tourist zones when the 13th Congress opened last July 1, 2004. It was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate February 19 and 20, 2004, respectively.

Bicol Nears Million Mark In Tourist Arrivals -- DOT

LEGAZPI CITY – It is no longer remote that Bicol will likely to hit the one million mark in terms of tourism arrivals this year, according to the regional office of the Department of Tourism here.
This, as Naga City and Camarines Sur registered the highest number of tourists among the six provinces and seven cities in the region for the period January-September 2007.

DOT Regional Director Nini Ravanilla reported that at the end of this year’s 3rd quarter period, Bicol posted a growth rate of 51 percent. This means that 694,733 domestic and foreign tourists so far visited the region this year, compared to the 458,737 tourists posted during the same period last year.

According to a report submitted by the DOT regional office on the regional distribution of travelers, Naga City and Camarines Sur combined were the highest gainers as of Sept. 2007, posting an impressive 114 percent mark up over the same period last year, outclassing once more Legazpi/Albay, the erstwhile top tourist drawer in Bicol.

DOT Cites CamSur As Tourism Model

The Department of Tourism lauded Camarines Sur as a model local government unit in the thrust to develop tourism as a major national industry.

This was the very complimentary assessment made by DOT undersecretary for tourism services and regional offices Oscar P. Palabyab before some 400 participants and guests at the opening ceremonies of the 8th National Convention of the Association the Philippines (ATOP) Wednesday evening, October 3 at the Camarines Sur Convention Center, crediting the tourism development initiatives launched by Governor LRay Villafuerte as largely responsible for the dramatic 27% jump in the growth of tourism in Bicol Region.

Camarines Sur with its internationally acknowledged Camarines Sur Watersports Complex at the forefront has lately emerged as the leading destination in the Bikol Region, dislodging the province of Albay with its fabulous Mayon Volcano as the primary tourism attraction in this part of Luzon in terms of arrivals.

Largely due to local initiatives, overall tourism growth has likewise reflected commendable growth, and if all local government with tourism potentials would follow the lead of Camarines Sur and more so if local efforts are organized as the ATOP presently headed by national president Jennylind Demerre-Cordero of Negros Occidental is striving to realize, tourism can very easily overtake foreign currency revenues from remittances of overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs), Palabyab said.
