Motoring Benefits The UK Budget

Chancellor Alistair Darling delivered his second Budget on 22 April. Within the budget was some welcome news for the UK motoring industry with the announcement of the car and light commercial vehicle scrappage scheme. In essence, owners of vehicles more than 10 years old will be given up to £2,000 towards the cost of a new car or van (a mixture of grant and dealer discount) as an incentive to scrap their old vehicle. This comes as welcome new to the industry as according the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) nearly 138,000 fewer cars were sold in March 2009 than the previous year.

The New Mazda 3 Sporty and Chunky

In keeping with tradition Mazda has rolled out a very nice looking, chunky little sporty car; the new Mazda 3. The latest car was first rolled out across the water not in Ireland but in the USA, first in saloon version then the hatchback followed after. I haven’t driven one yet but have had a good look round in the showroom and yes I quite like it, the cockpit looks well equipped and what I like to term “tight”; all the controls site together nicely and it looks quite muscular for such a small car. Carbag is due to take it for a test drive in May so watch this space for the full SP.

Usually one of the first casualties of a slower economy is the automotive market and there has been no exception with new UK car registrations down by 23 per cent in October; a trend thats been followed throughout Western Europe and the United States.

The blame for empty showrooms has clearly been put on the credit crunch and a collapse in consumer confidence with follow-on effects being felt across the supply chain with shorter working hours and temporary cutbacks being reported. Dealer groups are pushing for a cut in interest rates to stimulate new demand.

In a bid to increase its profile in Europe, Hyundai has revealed details of its new awe-inspiring diesel engine. The all aluminium ‘The R-Engine’ as its to be known has an array of advanced features such as variable-geometry turbocharger with an advanced management system and a Bosch developed 1800 bar piezo-electric common rail. The engine is fitted with a close-coupled diesel particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation with by-pass valve to be Euro-5 emission compliant.

Hyundai claim The R-engine will out perform all major European manufactures and will be available in two versions a 2.0l 184hp and 2.2l 200hp. Watch this space.

The fabulous Ferrari 355 buy a bargain

A truly lovely super-car, with the majority of models pumping out 375 horses with easy sub 5 second 0-60mph a gorgeous car this really is.

You might dream of having money to burn but hold that thought, with the current UK car market as it is, good used models can be found for as little as 32k depending on model. Sound a bargain in fact, “I’ll have two” there is a catch though and that’s the running costs.

In truth no Ferrari is cheap to run, a minor service will cost around the £750 mark, full 12,000-mile service £1500, tyres at £1200 per set and the cam belts changing at least every 3 years regardless of mileage for about £1500. On top of this you have the massive insurance premiums and equally massive fuel consumption. So why bother? Vauxhall has refined its hot hatch Astra VXR with the introduction of the new Nurburgring limited edition. On closer inspection there is no doubt about the sublime visual differences. The exclusive all-white paintwork and trim really contrasts with the darkened windows and draws your eyes to the modest badging. Performance-wise its similar to the 240hp standard Astra VXR with 0-62mph being achieved in 6.2seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.
