Carbery's Mark O'Connell

Storage tank specialist Carberry Plastics Limited is this year celebrating thirty-five years in business. Based in Clonakilty, Co. Cork in the South West of Ireland, Carbery is today a leading European manufacturer of rotationally moulded, plastic storage tanks.

During the past 35 years, Carbery’s founder and Managing Director, Michael McCarthy has witnessed significant changes in the storage tank industry.

“The industry today has changed beyond all recognition”, admits Michael. “In 1977, a plastic bunded tank was unheard of, the internet was unknown and coal posed the biggest threat to the continued success of the oil heating industry. Today of course, bunded tanks are now the norm, web based technologies are central to the success of our business and in most parts of Ireland and the UK, coal fired central heating is but a distant memory.”

“Carbery has of course changed too over the years, in response to changing customer requirements and market demands. Initially, most of our product sales were to customers in the immediate area, whereas today Carbery products are sold to customers across Ireland, and exported to a growing number of UK and EU markets. We’ve invested in our production and engineering processes over the years; today our Clonakilty plant is a globally recognised centre of excellence for the manufacture and design of rotationally moulded products.  And of course we’ve demonstrated our commitment to look after the most important people in our business too – our customers – through significant investments in new product development, sales, marketing and customer support.”

For any company celebrating such a significant milestone, it must be tempting to look back and reminisce. However, as UK Sales Manager Mark O’Connell readily admits, at Carbery, the focus is very much upon the future.

“Carbery’s success over the years can in part be attributed to product development, innovation and responding quickly to customer needs. Today, we probably have the strongest new product pipeline in the company’s history. During the year, we’ll be launching important new additions to strengthen the Carbery range, with the first product set to debut at FPS EXPO in April. Building on our success in mainland Europe, we’re preparing to enter a number of new geographic and product markets. And closer to home, we’ve made significant investments in our sales and marketing operation too, with John Switzer joining our marketing team and my colleague Jill Turner becoming Carbery’s UK Sales Co-ordinator.

“However, whilst we invest and plan for the future, we remain fully committed to servicing the requirements of our customers. During the past 35 years, storage tank manufacturers have come and gone, whilst others have disappeared without a trace after being absorbed by large, multi-national, conglomerates. Marketing Manager at Carbery Plastics, Gearóid Buckley believes that the new product range will spark a surge in exports from the family run company.

Continue reading »]]> EPA  publish annual waste report

The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released their latest annual waste report, with some mixed results.

While household, commercial and construction waste have all seen a reduction, this is the result of the economic downturn rather than an improvement in waste management.

The National Waste Report 2009 covers performance in waste generation and management and progress towards meeting EU recovery, recycling and diversion from landfill targets.

The main cause for concern is Ireland’s ability to divert waste from landfill and its waste infrastructure. Of the country’s 29 landfill sites, 16 will be full within three years.

Carbery Plastics Marketing Manager, Gearóid Buckley commented: “These results do appear to be skewed by the current economic climate. The current recession is having a marked effect on waste generation, particularly in the commercial waste and construction and demolition waste streams.”

“While the reductions in waste generation and the improvements in recovery seen in 2009 are welcome, we must continue to focus on resource efficiency to ensure that when economic growth does return, it is not accompanied by a surge in waste generation.”

“The report also highlights the need for more bring banks and civic amenity sites. Nationally there are 1962 bring sites and 107 civic amenity sites. Figures show that the increase in these recycling facilities from 2005 has contributed to an increase of 6910 tones of waste being recycled.”

On a more positive note the Carbery Plastics Representative said “Ireland is currently on track to meet its EU Landfill Directive diversion target for biodegradable municipal waste for 2010.”

“Municipal waste recycling achieved a rate of 35%, close to the EU27 norm of 40%. However the report goes on to say that the targets for 2013 and 2016 will be more difficult to achieve. It says ‘urgent and sustained’ actions are required if those targets are to be met.”

On Friday (11^th February) Carbery Plastics will launch their new Recycle Bank at the AMAI (Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland) Conference, Westlodge Hotel, Bantry at 5pm. This new recycle bank will revolutionise how Bring Sites operate right around the country.

The challenge put before them is to compile a recession proof marketing strategy for West Cork company, Carbery Plastics. The wining Marketing team will be honored not only with a weekend to Clonakilty but will also win the Euro Link perpetual Cup.

Three teams have been short listed to present their plans to a panel of three judges in dragons den style presentations.

Gearóid Buckley, Marketing Manager with the West Cork firm is looking forward to tonight’s event. “I am excited to see what new and innovative ideas CIT students present. It is fantastic opportunity for both Carbery and these students. Real life marketing experience is a distance from the corners of CIT’s library, so it will be very interesting to see theory applied to a real life business.”

This event is opened to the public and will take place on CIT’s Bishopstown Campus from 6pm.
