A charming and colourful addition to Puerto Mogan.  The new handicraft market, which opened on Monday 29th June, will now be held every Monday from 10.00 to 14.00 above the underground car park, just down from the open air bus station.  Here you will be able to have a leisurely browse from stall to stall where you will find on display a wide range of typically Canarian products, handmade crafts and jewellery, Canarian wines, homemade pastries and bread, vegetables and fruit and much more.  A delightful way to spend a morning.

It’s official, the beaches in Gran Canaria are clean, gorgeous, and family friendly. The latest Blue Flag awards for the cleanest beaches in Europe, has dished out 7 of the prestigious awards, spread around the island.

The European Federation of Environmental Education (FEE) are experts on the matter and have thousands of beaches in 100’s of countries to choose from. They consider the quality of the sand, the attention to regular cleaning, and the general upkeep of the beach areas before making their decision.

So take a bow Gran Canaria, here are the cream of a very large crop. In Las Palmas – Las Canteras and La Laja, Telde – Melenera, San Bartolome de Tirajana – El Ingles, San Agustin – Maspalomas, Mogan – Amadores and Playa de Mogan.

Normally flights from Denmark start their winter schedule from October but Cimber Sterling will be running new flights from August. The new flights will serve 2 Danish airports, Copenhagen and Billund on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

A new route has also recently been announced from Bucharest, Romania. Gran Canaria is a very cosmopolitan island with plenty to offer visitors of all nationalities.

On Monday the advisory council of the government of Gran Canaria approved the plans for a train service between Las Palmas, the airport and Maspalomas.

The municipalities to which the train route will pass by are the capital Las Palmas, Telde, Valsequillo, Ingenio, Aguimes, Santa Lucia, and San Bartolome de Tirajana.

Apart from easing congestion from the roads which carry an estimated 12 million passengers each year the government’s aim is also to improve public transport by introducing a fast, comfortable and reliable service which will benefit residents and holiday makers alike by offering further means of transport for recreational or business purposes.

This is going to be a tough year for tourism, but just waiting for things to improve is not an option for Gran Canaria. The tourism minister, Roberto Moreno has unveiled a innovative programme to keep visitors flocking to the island.

Scandinavians have long seen Gran Canaria as the place to go for winter sun but Moreno wants to make sure they add summer visits to their must do list. “For the summer of 2009 there is an increase in airline seats from the Nordic countries, especially Iceland, Sweden, and Finland.”

The strong German market is continuing to do well but the Gran Canaria government is looking to attract new holiday makers from Poland and the Czech Republic. The tourism minister is working hard to increase flights from these new emerging markets too.

The internet is becoming more and more important for potential holiday makers, and Gran Canaria is surfing high on the internet booking wave. The island has a high profile with its main website and a You Tube channel.

Once people discover the delights of Gran Canaria, they will return time and again, it’s good to see that the government are making sure as many people as possible make that all important first contact.

It’s official, Mogan was the top place to stay in all of Spain for February. New figures, just released,show that the Gran Canaria southern hot spot, beat all its rivals in the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, with a 75 per cent occupancy. The monthly average for the Canary Islands was 60 per cent, so they really smashed through that barrier.

It will come as little surprise to those who have witnessed the rise of this area, and its twin attractions, Playa Mogan and Puerto de Mogan. Playa Mogan has kept its old village character while adding modern shopping delights, and Puerto de Mogan has become known as the Venice of the Canaries for its network of water ways that feed the port.

A delighted Mogan Mayor, Francisco Gonzalez said “the credit has to go to our repeat visitors, and we hope to do even better, with the improvements being made to our infrastructure and services.”  The figures for February show an impressive 29,000 tourists clocking up 220,000 overnight stays.
