Here are a couple cool vintage reproduction postcards from the 2nd Hotel Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, circa 1930. They are still being sold in the gift shop of the Hotel Vancouver today!

EXHIBITION PARK MAP

Hi everyone:) This design is just one "Land" for a large Theme Park based on the history of British Columbia, Canada. This section is called "EXHIBITION PARK". It lets guests experience the sights and sounds of a turn of the century trolley park. Exhibition Park has all the thrills and chills of the midway and the romance of the Victorian era.

Let's break it down:

The waterfront boardwalk is a promenade along the shore and includes the English Bay Bathhouse Cafe, Interurban Trolley Stop, and Covered Dance Hall on the pier. You may also notice the forestry building Exhibit/Eatery.

This is the main square of Exhibition Park and includes some of the most iconic fair buildings from BC`s History. Each of these buildings are Flex Space and can be used for shows, exhibits, and even indoor attractions.

Under the Tracks on the other side of Exhibition Square is Happyland Midway. This is a collection of lost turn of the century rides updated for the modern guest.

Rides include the Whip, swings and Ferris Wheel, as well as classics like Shoot the Chutes.

There is also a Dark Ride based on the underworld of the Sideshow Performers.

Shoot the Chute is a Vancouver Classic!!

There is also a Wooden Roller Coaster based on the the Big Dipper.

BC ABORIGINAL LAND MAP

Hi everyone:) This design is just one "Land" for a large Theme Park based on the history of British Columbia, Canada. Its the "BC Aboriginal Land". It lets guests experience the various types of aboriginal cultures that exist throughout BC in an immersive way. Let's break it down:

This is the shed house village off of the main entry hub. It has two main attractions, Canoe Discovery Voyage and Performance Lodge.

The Performance Lodge is a stadium type venue shaped like a west coast Salish woven hat and surrounded by shed houses. Inside will host various events like pow wows and big name aboriginal performers. This will change all the time and include a few permanent shows.

The Canoe Discovery Voyage takes guests on a guided canoe ride through the waters of the BC Aboriginal Land. This sights include tipis, wildlife, longhouse village, fishing canyons, traditional bridge, whales and a unique tall ship encounter.

This trdaitional bridge looks rustic but is strong as it gets, hanging high above the costal canyons with views of the entire longhouse village.

These Pit Houses were found in BC's interior. They were lodge style homes dug into the ground with an entrance/smoke hole out the top of a hilled rooftop. Guests can visit and learn about these amazing structures.

The Longhouse Village is the main attraction of the land. Its a full reproduction of a traditional longhouse village found on the coast of BC. Inside each house will be various nations on display, like mini museums, as well as food and shopping. The main lodge, or Feast house, is an eating experience which feels like your under the stars inside a open roof lodge with northern lights and entertainment.

The Spirit Caves are a Dark Ride attraction that takes guests into the spirit world to learn about the legends and stories that make BC Aboriginal cultures so diverse.

The Tipi Village gives the guests a chance to explore what it was like to live inside a tipi.

This is an old roadside attraction in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada with a kitschy 1950s farmyard and stables. It was called Old Mcdonalds farm and featured many miniature buildings in a very storybook style. Im a big fan of these vanishing attractions and thought it would make a great subject for a collection of pictures in Black and White.

Custom Stained Glass Window

Hey everyone. This is a Custom Stained Glass Style window I did for Schroder Oilfeild Services in Northern Alberta. It is based on their compnay logo, and used to fill a strange hole in their head office wall. Please enjoy the pics and commentary:)

This is the Company Logo. The image is religious based so i thought a stained glass window would be perfect.

I started with a design which I drew on an orange sheet of bristle board (Orange was the only color...its a small town) I used the Product "Gallery Glass" which is a fake stained glass paint, but extremely easy to use and looks quite real.

The first step is to use the lead paint which has a dispenser head and trace the design that is underneath. This is pretty difficult and I do recommend practice if its your first time.

Once the design is done let it dry 24hours.

The paint is puffy, so the next step is to squeeze the different colored paint into the different areas. It goes on quite creamy but dries translucent with a ripple effect.

Here is the plexi with the fully painted design on it and the orange paper removed.

I put it up against the window to test its translucency. See how nice the clear looks?

Here is the window installed at the space. It looks so nice with the trim and lit from behind.

Nice close-up of the finished product...looks pretty authentic for a fraction of the cost...pluss it peels off when you no longer want it. It also will stick again on another window.

Here is the office where the window was installed. Looks pretty good.

Aboriginal Puppetry Presentation

This very special performance told the story of northern Alberta's first nations landscape from the beginning of time through puppetry and dance. The giant life-sized puppets were designed by Lance and created together with the students from OPK School. Lance Produced/ Directed/ Designed and built this show as part of the Bigstone Cree Nation's OPK School 10 year anniversary celebrations in 2008. Boogie Wonderland - The Disco Experience

BOOGIE WONDERLAND -THE DISCO EXPERIENCE

Boogie Wonderland was an environmental peice that brougt audiences back to the dynamic days of disco! The show featured singers, dancers and actors re-creating the sights and sounds of of an authentic "Studio 54" style discoteque of the 1970s.This show was Co-created by Jeff Cox and Lance Cardinal in 2007. Lance Artistic Directed, Performed and arranged music for this production. The script and "Live action" directing was provided by Joseph Davies (the singing Cop in this video). Pat Waldron was the producer and Choreography was provided by Dawn Ewen.

SUNDAY NIGHT SHOWCASE

Sunday Night Showcase was presented in a cabaret format at the historic Century House Restaurant in Downtown Vancouver. Jeff Cox Produced this one, with amazing choreography by Dawn Ewen. Lance Directed and performed in these ones. Barrow continues to present these opportunities for singers as often as they can.

LOST VEGAS LIVE!

Lost Vegas Live was a 1970s showlounge tribute show, featuring songs from the old Las Vegas strip. Artists celebrated included Sonny and Cher, Elvis, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, and Ike&Tina. This show was co-created by Lance Cardinal and Jeff Cox in 2006 and produced at the Caprice Nightclub in downtown Vancouver, British columbia Canada. Lance also Directed, Designed and arranged music for this production. Jeff Produced this one, with amazing choreography by Dawn Ewen.

Old London Bridge Hotel and Casino

Hey everyone! Im super excited to share this miniature I just finished building for a local film project (which I cannot name yet...). This miniature is a "Conceptual model" for a fictional Las Vegas casino named "The Old London Bridge Hotel and Casino". I designed and built this model based on the directors idea for a 1700s boutique recreation of the historic london bridge. This hotel/casino would go right over the Las Vegas strip itself!! I think it would be a cool hotel in reality as well;) It is in HO scale (1:87 scale) and took me about 160 hours.

The "Making of " will be in the next post...lots of pics to share on the fun and...very small...process.

THE BRIDGE

WEMBLEY FRAGGLE Polymer Head Sculpt "Palisades Style"

Hey there everyone! Here is my first attempt at using "Sculpey" polymer clay. I wanted to learn how to build my own figures from scratch to go with my Muppet theatre and I thought Polymer is the way to go. I wanted my sculpts to be in the same style/scale as the PALISADES line of Muppet Show figures released in 2006.

I always thought that Fraggle Rock would be a great series to create figures and sets for, so I decided to use a Fraggle head as a test of the materials and my ability to match up with my existing figures. I think it turned out pretty good. Please enjoy the pics and process:)

Here is the Final Sculpt. Same Scale and finish as the Palisades figures. The base and eyes are polymer clay, the hair is made from cotton thread.

Here is a side view of the finished sculpt. I am pretty happy with the result, very close to the Palisades style.

Here is the beginning of the process. I started by using the Polymer clay, working it till soft. its like plasticine and dries hard as plastic. I shaped it into Wembley's head and began texturing it with a skewer.

This "sponge texture" detail was done on the entire head.

Eyeballs are shaped from the polymer clay as well.

I used many different images and videos as reference to the shape of the head and eyes.

The mouth has to have the flat Muppet surface.

Here is the head with the texturing all finished

Once it was done, it has to be baked. I created metal holders for the oven so it would bake evenly. This material needs to be baked 15min for every 1/4" of material being used.

While it was baking, I assembled the materials for the hair. According to the images, wembleys hair has multiple colors of green, yellow and white. I wanted the hair to be fairly close to the mariboo feather style of the Muppets, and cotton thread had the right scale and texture.

First i would wrap the thread around my fingers until I had the amount I needed...

Pull off the Loop...

Cut it in half...

Ready to be used as hair.

I did the same with the yellow thread. These short ones are Wembley's bangs

Now to bunch it up.

I inserted a few flex of green and white...

Muppet hair is growing!!

Once I had all the colors bunched up, I wrapped it in tape and prepared it for glue.

I dipped the bundle into some rubber cement to soak the base of the threads. Once it was solid, it was ready to go into the head of Wembley.

Once the material was baked, and it was cooled down, I tested out the eyeballs with wire pegs to hold it in place.

I then used my Dremmel tool to dig out a hole in Wembley's head to stick the hair bundle into.

Hair gets tested in place. Fits great.

The head gets painted a pale yellow, hair gets tested again for matching.

Looks like a good match

I used the oven stand to paint and finish the head sculpt.

Mouth painting was next. Getting this right is almost as important as the eye pupil placement.

Looking more and more like a Muppet.

Once it is painted, I added a sealer to protect the paint job. Adds a bit of shine and finishing.

Metal pins are in place ready for the eyeballs.

I used the oven holder to spray paint the eyeballs. Gives a nice smooth even "Muppet Eye" finish.

Eye balls are put in place....No Pupils yet.....

Hair is added...but still needs to be styled and shaped.

With Pupils added the eyes come to life! I wet the thread and used a blowdryer to shape it. so much better.

Im not completely happy with the hair situation, but for a first run at it, Im pretty happy!

I would call this a success and Im excited to start creating my own figures, especially Fraggle Rock!!


Here is the Fraggle head in comparison to the other Palisades figures. Althogh the hair is real, and not sculpted I think its a good match.

Fraggle Rock Printable Calendar

Hey everyone! This is a beautifully illustrated "Fraggle Rock" Calendar was released by CBC Enterprises in 1984 and is brilliantly Illustrated by Bruce McNalley. It features Jim Henson's Fraggles and is an amazing way to celebrate the seasons. I spent a lot of time scanning and repairing these images so please enjoy.

This 1984 calendar is valid for 2012 as well, so even though a few months have gone by...you can still print out these pages at the end of this post and use it this year!! Or you can just save these hi-res images and create your own calendar by sending it to Wal-Mart, Office Depot, London Drugs or any other place that will print you a calendar online.

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" Roombox Film Miniature

This is a project that was a private commission from a husband to his wife. The rooms were a surprise gift and these types of personal projects are always a pleasure to create! He knew his wife wanted to start collecting miniatures and had always wanted a roombox she could dress and fill. The husband decided to commission 2 empty rooms she could play with and decorate herself. It was built in 1/12th or 1" scale (dollhouse scale) and consisted of two different room concepts. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

The first room was based on the 1940s B&W film, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. This was the famous bedroom scene with the balcony overlooking gull harbour. This is one of his wife's favorite films. I have included some screen shots from the film for comparison.

This is the main view from the film. The client wanted dark floors so i used a dark walnut wood stain. The walls are antique white.

This wall is not seen in the film, but is necessary to complete the room.

The fireplace embers light up and the lamps are powered as well. The trim work was hand done with little saws and blades.

This painting is a custom replica of the painting in the film, a little extra gift for the mrs. from me. The mattress is moulded from Crayola Model Magic (No Surprise) and painted to look like leather.

Looks great in natural light and also when lit at night.

The railing was glued on to the backdrop image and the metal crosshatching was drawn on to the photo.

The backdrop image here is a print out of a picture i took when I was in california visiting family. Im sure its the same beach!! Worked out perfectly.

This is a gold painted radiator and one of two plugs I installed for accent lighting.

Looks great with the lights on.

Feels like an old Edwardian home.....perfect.

Whats an inviting daybed.

Makes you appreciate the lighting and set designers of the old film era.

This mattress was sculpted using an empty pen casing and a flat blade.

The second roombox is 2 stories high! This was a custom Library/Foyer designed from inspirational photos provided by the client. It includes spiral staircase and stained glass windows. Please enjoy the pics and commentary:

These boxes each have a removable plexi dust cover to keep things clean and out of little fingers.

The lights in the outside of each box is on a seperate l.e.d. light strip, seperate from the practical lights . Low wattage and no heat at all. very safe.

It all starts with a plan...

This is another design for a theme park based on the GOLDRUSH of British Columbia, Canada. Its set about 1853. This is a Pen and Ink illustration. The design is mine, but it was a conceptual collaboration with my partner Jeff Cox. Please enjoy the pics and commentary.

Here is the entrance gate which immediately brings you into the bowls of a mine, and removes you from the real world.

Main entrance HUB. right in the downtown of a new goldrush town.

these towns sprung up over night, and included tents and shacks as well as hotels banks and churches.

This saloon is the showpiece of the town and will include a live show and dinner.

Familys will walk along the shore and try their hand at gold panning for real gold!!!

The SS Beaver is permanently docked, ready to take rich miners back home. Explore the boat and learn about life at sea.

Explore the tent retail shops including a bank, and a barber.

There is a chruch as well...say a prayer for gold or check out the graveyard....

At the back across gold creek is the MINERS VILLAGE including a miners hotel/hostel

This is a restaurant and also a miner museum/memorial. Learn the history, watch actual footage and ask questions.

Here is a wroking water wheel near the waterfall , powering the mine town

This end is the main site for the mines. It includes 2 main E Ticket Rides. GOLD MINE COASTER (inside the mountains) and CARIBOO TRAIL PACK MULE ADVENTURE (outside the mountain)

CARIBOO TRAIL PACK MULE ADVENTURES takes families on a guided group tour of the mountains of goldrush town.

Climb up the mountains, cross a huge trestle and back down again. Follow the route of the gold miners of the 1800. Wtach for falling rocks, or wild animals or even bandits trying to steal your gold!!!

Water tower!!

GOLD MINERS COASTER is an indoor coaster/dark ride which shows the history of mountain mining including a full size actual mine operation, complete with miners, machines and TNT!!!

Enter in the mining supply shop to prepare for your mine coaster adventure!!

Hope your mine car does not become a runaway car!!!

ABORIGINAL THEME PARK CONCEPT

This is a concept I created for an ABORIGINAL THEME PARK, specifically focused on the first nations of British Columbia. It is a pen and ink illustration. I have included commentary explaining each area. The design is mine, but it was a conceptual collaboration with my partner Jeff Cox. I hope to post more them park concepts soon:) Enjoy the pics and commentary.

ABORIGINAL THEME PARK by Lance Cardinal

This is the entrance to the park area. The entrance resembles a west coast longhouse and totems line the shores.

This is the entrance corridor and MAIN HUB. You can see a giant welcome totem and a cliff LOOKOUT POINT top right.

The view from the lookout is of the longhouse village and water.

When moving clockwise we explore many different regions of the aboriginal people of BC. First area is the "Cariboo Chilcotin Coast's" TIPI VILLAGE. Inside each tipi are re-creations of village life and traditions.

there are also PLAINS LONGHOUSES that will house DINNER SHOWS and RETAIL shops.

The next area is "Coastal Islands", and the biggest part of theis park, the COASTAL LONGHOUSE VILLAGE. All the different longhouses feature various northern coastal nations of BC, almost like mini museums. Behind the longhouses there will be carvers and artisans, encouraging people to try traditional tools and crafting.

The shores are open to explore, TOTEMS are from various nations of Coastal BC.

The central longhouse is an entrance to an indoor PERFROMANCE PAVILLION. Inside, guests will experience a public gathering at night. Stars, trees, music and atmosphere. Various aboriginal events will be held here including Pow Wows, dance presentations and celebrations.

After leaving the longhouse village, the next area is the "Thompson Okanagan" PIT HOUSES. People can go inside, hear stories of this region and experience what it was like to live underground in BC's unforgiving desert.

Next area is the "Coastal Mountains"and includes a SHED VILLAGE and Mountain. It includes the biggest artificial waterfall ever made. This section has 2 E-Ticket rides. The first one is inside the mountain. It is a DARK RIDE called "Legends of the Coastal People". Guests crossover to the spirit world of the Coastal Mountain People, and experience the Bear, or the eagle or the salmon.

The second E Ticket ride is the RIVER CANOE ADVENTURE.

This is a fun RIVER ADVENTURE on a guided canoe that glides through all the beautiful sites of the waters of the park.

The canoes go through TUNNELS, float along the longhouse shore, observe WILDLIFE,

Maybe even a pod of Killer whales!

The journey ends with a TALLSHIP ENCOUNTER, re-creating what the aboriginal people of BC must have felt when they first encountered Europeans.

After you can cross the TRADITIONAL BRIDGE back to the hub or you can head to the TALLSHIP and explore it inside and out.

Guys and Dolls -Set Design

This is a set design I did for Metro Theatre in vancouver, BC, Canada. I dont have very many pictures, but you can see it was done in a very "Comic Book" style. The director Mark Carter was inspired by the Dick Tracy Movie and wanted to create a world of that nature. I love this set! So fun and animated!

This is a set design I did for Lindbjerg Academy's production of "Into the Woods" in 2004. This was early on in my career. The builders I had for this was Jeff Cox and Jay Pynn. Enjoy the pics and commentary.

The Wind in the Willows - Set Design

Wind in the Willows - Set Design by Lance Cardinal

This is a set design I did for Carousel Theatre's "Wind in the Willows" in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I was inspired by vaudeville stages / victorian shadow boxes. I really wanted to make the world of the wind in the willows a magical place. This design was nominated for a Jessie award in 2006. Enjoy the pics!

The clamshell light covers on the front really gave it a vaudeville feel.

You can see some of the aging details we did to make it seem antique.

The prescenium is all false, created at the scene shop. You can see my Muppet Show influence

This tree is double sided and on wheels. It has scrim on one side so it can be leafy or branchy.

You can see the tree looking branchy. The backdrop was also inspired by vaudeville drops.

Looks like the Muppet Thearte....I love gold and red.

Hand Painted detail and fake vines....
