Master Grant for international students for a Master’s programme at The Universität Bern

The Universität Bern offers six Excellence Grants for international students who wish to do a Master’s programme beginning in autumn 2010/11.

The grant consists of 1600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master’s programme.

For further information (study programmes, major, minor, etc.) about the Master’s programmes offered at ouruniversity, please contact the concerned Department directly. Application files will be examined by a selection committee. Criteria for selection are academic excellence and the candidate’s potential and motivation.

Preconditions:

Applicants must have graduated at the latest by end of July 2010 with at least a Bachelor’s degree in the wished field of study
This Bachelor’s or Master’s degree must be from a non-Swiss university
The applicants permanent place of residence up to now must be outside of Switzerland

The applicant’s file must include the following in duplicate:

Application form (see downloads)
Curriculum vitae
Letter of motivation with objectives
Letter of recommendation from a professor of your current home university
Evidence of sufficient language proficiency in German, if the study programme requires such.
Certified copies of Bachelor Diploma and Transcript of grades obtained during Bachelor ’s studies or confirmation by the home university that the Bachelor’s degree (in the same study field as the intended Master’s programme) will be completed by the end of July 2010 (with list of grades obtained up to now)
Record of school-leaving examination (i.e. university entrance qualification)
2 passport photos
Copy of passport

The application must be written in the language of the corresponding Master’s course.

Closing date: Applicant’s files have to be submitted in duplicate (two paper copies) before December 18, 2009 to:

NB:

Incomplete application files will not be considered!
In 2010/11 the grant will be given to six new Master’s students. The University receives many more applications than are grants available, and will not be able to explain refusals.
Fulfilling the above pre-conditions does not create an automatic right to a grant.

MASDAR Institute Graduate Scholarship

MASDAR Institute Graduate Scholarship
(for all nationalities to study at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi)

Full scholarship is available to qualified talented students who meet its high admission standards which include appropriate TOEFL score, GRE and an excellent CGPA from a recognized university. A minimum CGPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) or 2:1 in the British system, minimum TOEFL score of 577 (91 on the IBT) or academic IELTS (min 6.5), and a minimum GRE quantitative score of 700 are the basic requirements without which an applicant will most likely not be considered.

Students accepted into the Masdar Institute will be offered a full scholarship which includes the following:

100% tuition fee scholarship
Textbooks
Laptop
Medical Insurance
Housing in a single unit apartment (at the Masdar campus)
International students will receive reimbursement of travel expenses (economy class air-ticket) into Abu Dhabi and back home after completion of studies. Travel expenses (return economy class air-ticket) back to the student's home country at the end of the 1st year of studies will also be reimbursed.
Reimbursement of TOEFL and GRE exam fees (upon registration at Masdar Institute and submission of original receipts)
A competitive stipend per month (cost of living allowance).
No bond or conditions to the scholarship upon graduation

The scholarship and benefits are subject to the student maintaining a minimum CGPA as determined by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and satisfactory progress on their research.

Davis Scholarships – Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies

4 four-year Ph.D. full scholarships available in the fall of 2010.

Mrs. Kathryn Davis, an HEI alumna who obtained her PhD in 1934, is founding four Ph.D. full scholarships for a four-year period.

Two of these grants (Kathryn Davis Grant and Shelby Cullom Davis Grant) are intended for students of any nationality

having completed a degree programme in an American university.

Two other grants (Davis Grants) are intended for

two students coming from a Muslim country .

These grants will be attributed in the Spring of 2010 to students starting their PhD programme in September 2010 at the Institute exclusively. They will exempt them from tuition fees and provide a living allowance of 15000 CHF per year. They will last for a period of four years and will be renewed each year depending on the thesis progress.

The two-year Master in Public Policy (MPP) programme provides a strong foundation in conceptual and analytical skills for future public service leaders and individuals with an interest in understanding and influencing how public policy choices are made.
Areas of Concentration

In particular, MPP students deepen their understanding of a specific field by focusing on one of five areas of concentration:

Development Studies
Economic Policy and Analysis
International Relations and Security Studies
Social and Environmental Policy
Public Management and Governance

Practical Experience

To obtain direct practical experience, students also undertake a public policy or management study, called the Policy Analysis Exercise, for a client in the public, private, or non-profit sector.

Internships

Most students also take internships with organisations that are relevant to their studies, such as the United Nations Environment Programme (Bangkok); National Economic Development Authority (Philippines); World Bank (Washington, DC); Government Investment Corporation (Singapore); and Standard Chartered Bank.

Double/Concurrent Degree Programmes

MPP students can also apply for double degree programmes with Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). The school also offers double degree programmes with NUS Faculty of Law and NUS Business School.

Students may also complete concurrent degree programmes with the NUS Faculty of Law and NUS Business School. These programmes allow the top students from the Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business Administration programmes to begin their Master in Public Policy Programme concurrently with the third or fourth year of their law or business studies.

Grants

The School provides a number of grants to students. Although the specific value and coverage may vary, a grant will generally cover 20% of tuition fees, as well as cover additional fees and provide a modest stipend. For the remaining portion of the tuition fee not covered by the grant, grant recipients may apply to NUS for a tuition fee loan. More specific information on grants will be communicated to you if you are successful in your application.

Scholarships

The scholarships below are offered on a competitive basis. Applicants must have good academic and professional records. They must also have demonstrated leadership and a desire to contribute to public service. Not all the awards will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit. Scholars may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship or award without the prior approval of the School.

There is no bond or obligation for the scholar to be employed by NUS or in Singapore.

Note 1: The following items are covered by the terms of the relevant scholarships:

The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Graduate Scholarship is offered by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy to students who have demonstrated leadership and a desire to contribute to public service. This scholarship is available to all nationalities.

The terms of this scholarship for Singapore citizens and permanent residents are as follows:

A monthly stipend throughout the period of the award
A one-time book allowance
Tuition, health insurance, examination and other approved fees

Griffith University International Postgraduate Research 2009, Australia: The GUIPRS is designed to attract and support highly ranked international applicants during the University’s annual postgraduate research scholarship round. The scheme extends the provision of tuition fees scholarships beyond the University’s allocated International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS). The GUIPRS covers tuition fees for the student and overseas student health cover (OSHC) for the student and ependant(s). No other expenses are paid by this scheme, but award recipients may seek additional funding from alternative sources.

Eligibility

The IPRS is available to international students only. Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, four years of higher education studies at a very high level and be intending to enrol full-time in an approved doctoral or research masters program.

Part-time awards may be offered to students who, for social or medical reasons, are unable to study full-time.

Duration

The IPRS may be held for up to two years for a research masters program and up to three years for a doctoral program. A six month extension may be granted to doctoral students in certain circumstances.

No New Strike As Teachers To Register Anger At Ballot Box

One month after about 1,500 teachers held a one-day strike, teachers have agreed to wait for pay rises, provided a new educational structure is implemented immediately.

At a meeting on Friday, the Association of Teachers Link agreed that if the structure – due to revamp promotions and benefits for teachers – is introduced, they will accept a delay to pay rises until next year.

But in an apparent veiled threat to government, they also resolved to “think about those who have violated our rights” when voting in the upcoming presidential elections.

Willing To Wait

Teachers understand funds for pay rises have not been allocated in the 2008 budget and are willing to wait until they are, said Association of Teachers Link spokesperson Abdullah Mohamed.

In a press conference Thursday, state minister for finance Rilwan Shareef had said pay rises for teachers will “definitely be in the 2009 budget.” But officials could not promise an earlier pay increase.

However, teachers are asking for the immediate implementation of the proposed pay structure because “we have lost trust,” Mohamed said.

The pay structure, outlining promotions and benefits according to teaching qualifications, has been promised by the education ministry since 2006.

Teachers had initially requested a pay rise from Rf 4,195 (US$329) per month to Rf 12,000 (US $937) with an additional Rf 2,000 (US$157) for overtime and other benefits, but in July reduced their demands to those outlined in the promised pay structure, after government pleaded a lack of funds.

In reaction to Friday’s meeting, deputy education minister Ibrahim Ismail asked, “How will they implement the structure without increasing their pay?” He recommended further discussions with the finance ministry.

No Strike

During the recent press conference, education minister Zahiya Zareer pleaded with teachers not to strike again, saying: “Our children will suffer.”

Mohamed agreed, “This is not the most appropriate time to strike. There are more appropriate times coming up to make our feelings known…[for example] the elections.”

“[When we vote], we will be thinking about those who have violated our rights… and consider those who will work to better the education system and award us benefits and pay raises,” said Mohamed. “This way we will not be causing any harm to schoolchildren.”

Ismail said, “I am not sure who violated their rights. It is certainly not the education ministry, but I cannot speak for the government.”

Agreement

Mohamed said, “[All the teachers] are travelling in the same direction. We all say the same thing, and have the same thinking.”

Despite past condemnations of July’s strike by the ministry, Ismail supported the teachers’ work thus far, saying, “I think they should fight for their rights.”

Mohamed said the Association of Teachers Link has distributed over 4,000 membership forms, gaining 2409 registered members to date. About 9,000 teachers work in the Maldives altogether.

The Main opposition MDP has said that they will be establishing the first university of Maldives when their government assumes duties from 11 November 2008. This was said by MDP's Parliamentary Leader Hassan Afeef when he spoke at a meeting held in honour of the visiting British conservative party member. Afeef said, there had been too much talk in presidential addresses and at the opening of the Majlis and now it is too late for President Gayoom's Government to seize this opportunity.

" Singapore attained independence with us. See the difference between our two countries. Singapore does not have that many resources., We are blessed with enormous marine resources, beautiful islands. But just see the vast difference between us. " comparing Singapore's dramatic development, Afeef said.

He questioned, what has the Government done with all the wealth it has earned. He agreed there is some development, but health services and living conditions should have been much better, Afeef said. When we are embracing change, everyone must think about this seriously, a change which has not happened in 30 years cannot be achieved in 5 years, Afeef warned. He asked the people to think carefully when they vote for a president.

Afeef went on to say Maldivian people are not benefiting from the wealth of the nation although the GDP is high and MDP will ensure the wealth of the nation is fairly distributed and people enjoy a better life under an MDP lead Government. He assured that they will provide imroved health and education in the country. MDP does not want people to remain destitutes and go to neighbouring countries for every major treatment.

College endorse Shaugy’s plans

Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE) has endorsed the policies and concepts employed by Dr. Mahmoud Shaugy, former tourism minister, on establishing a national university.

Rector of MCHE Hassan Hameed when asked to comment on the recent views expressed by Dr. Shaugy on submitting a bill to the parliament to smooth pass the formation of the university said that Shaugy’s thinking and policies are good policies and that they at the meeting of the College Council had discussed the matter. He further said that Council was unanimous that the bill was sufficient and that no amendments were needed.

At the graduation ceremony held at Islamic Center in December 2005 President Gayoom had talked about forming a national university.

According to sources Abdulla Yamin during his tenure as Higher Education Minister has finalized all preparations on part of the ministry with regard to the national university. Sources say that the talks about the university somewhat lessened when Yamin resigned from the government.

Shaugy has said that the national university must be established as an independent organization similar to other such universities around the globe.

With the resignation of Dr. Shaugy from the cabinet earlier this month, President Gayoom has offered Dr. Shaugy the Vice Chancellorship of the national university to be formed. According to president’s office Shaugy has accepted the offer and the president have assigned him all responsibilities of establishing the university.

Shaugy in a previous interview given to Miadhu Daily has said the he was taking on the job as he considered the job to be a national service. He said it was not political move or intended to please anyone but it was rather part of his services to the nation as patriotic citizen.
