Messengers existed in different forms pigeons, people, smoke signals etc.

Coming to 21st century and you would find people using all kinds of wireless devices to communicate. So, ever wondered how your 12.9mm cell phone catches signals at the remotest areas. Well, it’s all the work of telecommunication engineers.

What is Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering?
Society relies on Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering for breakthroughs in applications such as satellites, next generation mobile phones, air-traffic control, the Internet etc.

Telecommunication systems are designed by telecommunication engineers. Early inventors in the field include Elisha Gray, Guglielmo Marconi and John Logie Baird. In recent times, optical fibre has radically improved the bandwidth available for intercontinental communication, facilitating a faster and richer Internet experience. And, digital television has eliminated effects such as snowy pictures and ghosting. Telecommunication remains an important part of world economy. The industry’s revenue is placed at just under 3 percent of the gross world product.

What are Functions of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineer?
Typically, an Electronics & Telecommunication Engineer will perform following work:

• Manage engineering team
• Design the telecommunications equipment including modems, switches, routers and radio links
• Develop real-time computer systems, including embedded computer systems and their software.
• Build and test prototypes of new equipment including integrated circuit components.
• Predict telecommunication systems performance
• Optimize the performance of telecommunications systems
• Provide technical support to marketing or customer service staff and telecommunications technicians.
• Train technical and engineering staff for new system installed.
• Supervise special research projects on next generation telecommunication systems.

What to study in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering?
At the initial level, students concentrate on core units for electrical engineering: mathematics, physics, electrical and computer systems engineering, digital logic systems, computer organization and programming.
Later on the study includes telecommunications, information transmission, electromagnetic theory, signals and systems, electronics and control systems, engineering management, telecommunications electives and group and individual projects.

Throughout the course, students choose from a range of electives, including Image Processing, Data Compression and Encryption, Radar Engineering, Microwave Integrated Circuits, Simulation of Communications Systems, Optical Networks, Wireless Networks, Internet Communication Engineering, Microwave Amplifiers and Oscillator Design, Telecommunication Network Management.

They learn about the planning and design, commissioning, performance monitoring, optimization and management of both small scale and complex telecommunications systems.

Career in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
Employment opportunities for Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers are growing rapidly. The list of employers includes manufacturers of radio, television, audio/visual, broadcasting and receiving equipments, hardware and associated software including computer systems, interfaces, security devices, data concentration, data transmission, signaling, satellite and radio communications and telephone equipment. Graduate also work in service organizations that provide broadcasting, consulting, data communications, entertainment, custom manufacturing, research and development, and system support.

Multimedia services are establishing employment opportunities not dreamed of years ago, for example video conferencing, interactive video on demand, internet broadcasting of conferences and training programmes and the real-time transfer of vast amounts of information.

Companies around the world are competing to be the first to market products such as digital mobile phones and network components that support the full range of Internet services into compact integrated circuit chip sets. Specialised terminal equipment will become available for new and innovative applications, including telepresence and shared virtual-reality worlds, with almost all existing communication network equipment being improved or replaced with exciting new technologies.

Telecommunication has be acknowledged as a vital ingredient for technology growing in leaps and bounds. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers are much in demand, as a nation’s hopes of development rests on their shoulders.

Why and When Do We Need Counselling?

Just like our body is attacked by diseases and ailments and we need to go to a medical practitioner in order to heal it and become healthy again, our mind is sometimes stricken with stress, depression and other psychological troubles that need an objective, trained cure.

Somehow there is a stigma attached to going in for psychotherapy, which keeps a lot of us away from approaching a counselor even when there is a strong need to do so. It is important to understand that the mind is also a part of our health process, and we need to be able to help it heal and recover when it needs to.

What is counselling?
Counselling is a talking therapy, a way of exploring what might help you find your way through your current difficulties. A counsellor will help you find your own answers to the problems you face, and work towards increasing your sense of competency and self-worth.

Counsellors will not give you guidance or advice on what you should do, since they believe that with support you are the best person to work out what is right for you. Here are a few areas that counseling can help you deal with:

- Feeling homesick
- Academic problems
- Relationships
- Family problems
- Worry
- Feeling down or depressed.

Most people have experienced these kinds of issues at some stage in their life, and they are normal concerns for students. Each of us has different ways of coping with problems, either by talking to friends, talking to parents, isolating ourselves, drinking etc. Some ways are more helpful than others. If you’re finding that your way of coping is not solving the problem or that the problem seems too big for you to handle, then you may be helped by counselling.

When to go to a counselor or psychotherapist
Almost every person comes to a phase of his/her life when he needs some ones help or advice while passing through the difficult phase. Many times the problem can be solved on its own or with the help of family member or friends but many times it is not and hence a third person who is a stranger dealing in the specific situations is being consulted.

A counselor or psychotherapist will focus on the areas that need to be worked on, and after building a relationship or ‘rapport’ with the client, she or he will challenge the person in order to awaken the hidden coping skills and tools within the client. Therefore the relationship between the client and the counsellor or psychotherapist is purely professional.

A professional will never do anything to harm the client, and more importantly, will ascertain whether the client is ready before attempting any solution.

Facing the Exams

First quarter of the year is the season of examination, and stuents appearing for their board examinations are the one who are facing the strees of exams. But proper practice and regular revision of the syllabus will keep them tension free.

In most house-holds, exam times are stress times. But they need not be so. While we cannot study for our children, we can help them take any exams with the right attitude – and spirit. We can ease the pressure and stress by offering them a calm, caring and concerned support and a conducive and healthy environment at home. We can guide them by encouraging them to follow these steps:

Be prepared!
Don’t get afraid with the exam; instead get prepared your self for facing the exams. Be well versed with the 4 Ps – “Preparation Prevents Poor Performance”. The most effective way of alleviating the stress brought on by tests and exams is to be well prepared.

Cover all the relevant material
Organise yourself get your timetable for examination. List down the topics that are being covered for the exams and then help your child write down the then divide them by the days left until exams begin. This way, they’ll be sure to cover all their subjects, not just their favourite ones!

Practice answering questions
Practice makes the man perfect so help prepare your child to practice the answering questions. The last stage of revision should involve practice in answering examination questions in the time allowed. It’s important that your child not only knows his work, but is able to convey that information in the allocated time span of the exam.

Take time out for regular breaks
Organise the time for study and revision. Do not get overloaded. Note that concentration falls off after certain amount of time. This can vary from child to child, but a short break is a good idea every 60 or 90 minutes. A brisk walk or watching nature is a great way to recharge the batteries.

Eat to improve concentration
Do not sit for so long with empty stomach. Feed the body and you feed the mind. Omega 3 fish oils are said to be an aid to concentration. Make sure that your child eat healthy and regularly and don’t let them skip meals. Give a glass of warm milk so that they remain charged.

Rest the mind
Be sure that your child takes enough of sleep. A good night’s sleep will keep them charged and be able to concentrate on study. Give them time to wind down if they’ve been studying in the evening. Let them watch a bit of TV; have a warm drink and a read before trying to go to sleep.

Remember:

You can’t do the work for your child.

Give your child a message about the importance of education in their life. You can insist that your child spends a certain amount of time in front of their books but you can’t make them study. Explain them if they don’t work hard and fail, it will be a salutary lesson to them that they are ultimately responsible for themselves and that it usually takes effort to succeed in life.

Teach your child about the honesty and ethics and warn them to never cheat in exams; this is called academic dishonesty. Cheating is just not looking to the person on the right/left/front/behind you and looking at their answers.

Cheating is a serious matter that you should explain your child because cheating can face consequences such as disqualification, a mark of F or a 0, and if severe s/he could be expelled from school, college or university and less likely to excel and/or land a job career.

Encourage your child to work in their own words and style. Do not let anyone copy his/her work.

Career Counselling & Planning For Students

Outlined below is a systematic approach that parents could follow to help their children to seek meaningful careers.

Step I: Plan your child’s career

All parents should ensure that they discuss the aspirations of their children with them. This is best done after they complete their Std IX or during Std X and have to decide further. Fortunately today, career options go much beyond medicine and engineering. Caution should be exercised such that the parents do not force careers of their choice on the children or their vocation e.g. doctor, lawyer etc. A patient and empathetic ear lent to children at this stage can go a long way in shaping their career. Besides careers in arts and commerce too have become equally rewarding today than ever before.

Step II: Visit a Career Counselor

It is expected that in every household there will be multiple opinions on the career track the child should take up. This often results in opinions being forced on the child and thus a lot of uncertainty & confusion. It is here that a vocational or a career choice test could be of great use to determine the future. The advantage here is that the counselor can give a dispassionate opinion based on the facts of the case and the best possible option.

Step III: Develop Communication Skills

One of the most important skills the youngsters should develop is the ability of expression. Very often, many students know various things but fail miserably because they are unable to express their thoughts with clarity. Students should be encouraged to develop oral communication skills. Every college student should complete a course in public.

Step IV: Develop the overall personality

In today’s competitive world the person who succeeds is the one who has multiple skills under his belt. Specialization in an area is important but one should not be an over-specialist. It is useful to inculcate inter-personal and teamwork skills in children. These go a long way in boosting their confidence and also build better impressions on one and all around them. Parents should encourage the child to actively participate in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities at the school & college level. It is here that they learn valuable lessons of competitiveness and sportsmanship.

Step V: Increase their computer literacy

Today’s world is heavily computer driven. It is strongly recommended that children should be exposed to as much of computer skills and techniques. If they are interested, computer software is an excellent field to be in; else the value addition acquired could enrich the student. Personal computers too have become very affordable and could provide an unlimited world of learning to students via floppies and CDs. The Internet & the World Wide Web too is an infinite universe of learning opportunity. It is true that the internet may also be a bad influence. However supervised use of the internet could be a great asset as it is an unlimited powerhouse of knowledge.

To summarise, careers are made by conscious planning. One should never choose careers because they are popular or easy to complete but choose the appropriate / right career for the right person. Let us remember that if careers are not planned they may go haywire. Besides, the latent potential that people possess may remain subdued and suppressed.
Good listening skills, self-control, use of good grammar, and sensitivity are all skills that are learned over different stages of life.

Communication skills are largely influenced by the examples children see and hear from their family, school, peers, relations and environment. The ability to communicate clearly through speech is just one facet of a child’s developing good communication skills. The other most used mediums of communication are tone, voice, gestures, facial expressions, body language etc. Children must not only learn how to speak, instead they must learn when to speak and what to say. It is of utmost importance to learn the usage of right words and phrases at the right time. Association with related visuals and images enhances the communication and expressive abilities.

Here are some of the suggestive ways educators and child rearers can use to develop and build communication skills among children.

1. Indulging and encouraging the child to speak out his or her mind clearly and correctly, to express their feelings through words and not through tears or cries. Using good pronunciation, talking slowly and using good grammar are all aspects of communication that parents should model for children. Parents should pay attention to how their children are speaking and correct whenever required. Mistakes should not be corrected in front of others, this may cause children to feel embarrassed and hence may inhibit their speech in public.

2. Sometimes relating an event and discussing the good and bad memories encourages children to talk and express their opinions.

3. Children like to be listened to and heard. The more we listen to children, the better they will be able to assess their abilities and interests and plan for their next steps in learning and development.

4. Making the child participate in more analytical and cognitive skills development games.

5. Read to children and encourage them to read and write.

6. Teach children to establish eye contact with the person, they are talking to. Looking away is a sign of disinterest.

7. Children must be trained not to jump into a conversation just because they feel like talking. It is important that parents teach children self-control of language and expression.

8. Modeling good listening behavior is the best way to teach good listening. When conversing with children. We should listen attentively and repeat key phrases back to the child so that the child feel heard.

9. We should show children how to approach the group quietly, smile to those in conversation, listen to what people are saying, and wait until there chance comes to speak.

10. Helping children understand nonverbal communication and cues. Rude facial expressions like eye rolling and grimaces as well as yawning at a speaker, hair twisting, turning one’s back to the speaker, finger nail picking and checking one’s watch, are all bad manners. Children need to learn that their nonverbal actions and behaviors can make people feel badly. Learning to read other people’s nonverbal cues is an important lesson too, and with time, children start understanding when to end conversations, finish a story or change a subject. In this competitive era children also need to market themselves. Even if they are endowed with great values, they would not be noticed, if they are not able to market themselves. It is very necessary to communicate those acquired values to other people. They need to convince others about the value of their ideas. They need to convince others by communicating their opinions and arguments.
It can help to change the way you think about taking exams. An exam will not predict your future success or determine your self worth. Changing your attitude can actually help you enjoy studying and learning. Here are some ways you can work on changing your attitude:

Remind yourself that it is only an exam and there will be others.

Reward yourself when the exam is over. Think about all the things you will do once you’ve given your last paper!

Think of yourself in a positive way. Think of all the hard work you have done already or think of what you do know.

Plan ways to improve next term.

Don’t forget the basics:
Don’t forget about yourself and what you need. This means thinking of yourself as a total person, not just as an exam taker.

Maintain proper nutrition and exercise, and continue some of your social or recreational activities. It is all right, in fact, better, to take a break once in a while.

Make sure you get plenty of sleep. You can’t function at your best if you are tired.

Do something relaxing when you feel adequately prepared.

Again, try to do something relaxing before the test. Cramming minutes before can produce anxiety. Reach early, so that you are spared the last anxious moments.

Revise Regularly – Do not cram
This is a sure-fire way to ensure that you do not do well. See box for why cramming produces just the opposite results of what you intended. It is always a good practice to revise regularly. Go through your work the day it was taught, so that it remains fresh in your mind, and revising it ‘embeds’ it into your long term memory so that you retain it well. Then just an additional revision or two will suffice to ensure that you are well prepared for the exams.

Change your mindset from result oriented to performance oriented.
The most common mistake we do is that while studying we start thinking about the result and its impact on our life.
Studying for result is known as result oriented approach. It is good to have aim (target) in mind but if aim becomes rigid, it leads to anxiety and stress.
Getting good or bad marks is not in our hand. Change your approach from result to performance oriented – how much have you understood and grasped? Are your concepts clear? If not than what’s the reason for falling behind your target. This mindset will improve your concentration and reduce your stress. You will start enjoying your studies without worrying about results!

Take regular breaks while studying.
Study shows that human brain cannot concentrate more than 30 to 50 minutes continuously. So it is important for us to take a break for about 10 minutes to recharge our brain. Call up a friend, watch TV, listen to music, take a walk or simply snack on something healthy. Do not eat junk food as that has an adverse effect on your mental powers. Instead, eat green vegetables, sprouts, fruits, protein rich foods like cheese and paneer.

Study time
The time you study has an important effect on how well you study. According to research our brain has been in most active state from 5 to 8 in the morning and 7 to 11 in the evening. Try and schedule your study time around these hours. Also manage your available time well so that you have enough time for rest, recreation and study. If you have revised regularly, you will find that you have enough time and more to do all the things you want to do even when exams are around the corner. Plus you will keep your cool and do well.

Career in Language Translator

If someone wants to be a translator his/her standard of education must be very high; Degree is essential though not necessarily in languages. It is a positive advantage to have qualifications or experience in another subject. Postgraduate training in translation is useful but in India there are few such type of institutes. Most of the translators are self made Translators who will be able to write in their own mother tongue/English impeccably in a style and register appropriate to the subject and have a flair for research on technical subjects.

It is very important to note that the translator should have a thorough grasp of the languages in his language combination, mainly to the target language. He/She must also be familiar with the culture and customs of the country. The only way to do this is that he or she surrounds himself with the language to be translated or target language.

Some may advice you to live or stay in the country where the language is spoken but this is not possible for most of the Indians due to financial reason.

Indian translators perform well in translation from foreign languages to English and in their own Mother tongue but 95% Indian translators can’t translate properly from English to Other Foreign languages as translation is not like subject to subject or word to word Translation. The culture, philosophy and psychology of the people of target language should also be reflected in Translation.

It is best to have a specific field that he/she specializes in, be it literature, technical, medical or legal.

A Translator has to invest minimum of equipment and software. He/She should have a computer and appropriate word-processing software; and internet connection; suitable dictionaries, preferably online dictionaries like LEO, which return results at the touch of button, saving the translator an enormous amount of time searching through printed dictionaries.

Now-a-days translators are also using translation memory software and other translation tools. In an office translation environment, the use of the Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tool Trades has become the standard and many translators have got success by using these tools.

Job Prospects

Today’s job market is full of variety of jobs for a translator. By knowing languages one can be a translator, interpreter and also a teacher.
What after SSC/HSC? this is one of the common question being asked by parents and students who want to develop career in today's world where without a proper education you are no where. Lakhs of students appear for SSC every year and this question looms large on their minds as well as their parents.

If students or parents do not get proper guidance and come under the influences of what others do then under such wrong career decision they end up with mess and spoil the career. Let us see what are this wrong influence career decisions which leads to spoiling a Childs career.

Career chosen based on what others say: Here the influencing factors are relatives, friends and neighbours. Just like my neighbours asked me many other parents asks to family friends, neighbours and relatives which may not be always correct for your child. What answer parents receives are normally "My son did engineering and now he is earnings handsome salary", "After SSC my nephew joined Computers field as there is a big demand of Computer in future so you can take up a course in Computers" etc. I am not saying don’t ask any one about your Childs career but the thing is do not force your child to do what others are saying. After all it is your child who is going to face the future situation based on his/her decision. So find out the right interest and aptitude of your child.

Career choice based on friends choice: After spending 10 years of schooling many students feel that they remain with their friends forever, so they intend to join the career what the friends are going to do. But in this case the career chosen may not be suited as the level of the student is not up to the required mark.

Wrong Notions: People still under wrong notions even in this fast expanding world, they think that Medical and Engineering studies as highly prestigious. So many times it has been seen that parents want their child to take up Science after SSC irrespective of whether he/she would be able to cope up with its syllabus or not. Even students getting low percentage in SSC are admitted to science colleges. This results into a failure and then dropouts and finally switching over to either Commerce or Arts stream.

Choosing a career is a multi-step process. Before concluding from your side try to find out from your child about his/her best aptitude, interests. If you are still not able to satisfy then attend seminars for career guidance after SSC/HSC which many schools arranges for their students or even many private organizations arranges in their suburb. go and attend those seminars. Try to meet teachers as they are the best one who knows about your Childs skills and capacity. Finally don’t hesitate to go in for career counseling, as it will be beneficial for your child in the later stage of life to pursue or go in for higher studies.

Most of the students I have seen they go in for Engineering as a career. But they are confused as to start the career with Diploma or HSC. I would suggest them if engineering is to be done, then going directly to diploma after SSC is good option. Engineers having diploma background have an extra advantage in career as they spends 6 years in engineering field as compared to HSC + Engineer who spends 4 years in engineering field. Also after HSC, getting into better engineering course is very tough as it requires very high percentage in HSC and then very good percentile in CET. And CET will be there for HSC students applying for engineering and is never going to be removed.

As compared, after diploma, if you have better percentage in last year, you get direct admission to 2nd year of engineering and thus you are saved from the dreadful 1st year of engineering which is considered as the toughest year in any engineering course because there is a drastic change in the pace of study from HSC to Engineering.

Let us have a helicopter view of various educational courses available to us after SSC/HSC. The list is not complete so readers are requested to take the help of some other sources information also like internet, career guidance seminars and career counselors etc.
