It’s All About Your Audience, Not You

The overall purpose of any speech is to engage your audience.

The quality of your speech is the response you get, as well as your words. If the response you wish is anger or joy or intrigue, then your words have engaged. It you don’t engage your audience, then it’s all over rover. Knowing your audience is the pathway to success.

A critical part of your preparation in making a presentation is to find out and learn as much as possible about your audience.

In Career Development – Speaking with Confidence 1 I introduced you to Dennis who ‘winged’ his presentation. The audience was well aware of the pros and cons of legalisation of illicit drugs His audience was made up of professionals in the area of drug addiction and were to update with the latest clinical techniques addiction.

They were also aware of the social and criminal aspects of drug addiction. However, Dennis regurgitated the popular view expressed in the media at the time that illicit drugs should be legalised, a view that would decriminalise the supply of the banned substances.

As a Keynote Speaker the audience felt that his speech was a waste of time, Dennis was out of his depth and didn’t present anything new. In other words he wasn’t worth listening to, as he stated the obvious. The lesson here is always think about you audience as much as about the purpose of your speech So “How do you know your audience and who are in your audience?”

Four Types of Listeners

Maybe you are presenting to a mixed group – men, women, educated, those desperately in need of a job, to engineers, accountants, or to people who are just plain bored with life. That’s important to know, however you should also keep in mind how people listen. Generally, there are four types of listeners:

The Empathic Listener

The Intellectual Listener

The Pragmatic Listener and

The Dynamic Listener

Now your listener may be a mixture of some or the entire types listener throughout your presentation. When I talk to an audience about renovating your career there will be some who are Empathetic Listener because they are ‘work refugees’. Others may say to themselves, “Does this speaker make sense?

Is the speaker‘s reasoning sound? Or his concept based on sound principles? This person is the Intellectual Listener.

The third type of listener is the Pragmatic Listener, who just wants to know how to renovate their career or create a new one. He or she wants to know how to pick the fruit, not how the three grows the fruit. Pragmatic Listeners are very practical.

The final general type of listener, the Dynamic Listener, wants to know how they can move forward and use what you are saying or proposing. They want to know what they have to do to start the renovation process and are a combination of all the various types of listeners.

The late Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple was very practical and knew how to engage his teams and how to inspire his customers with outstanding products. He also creates a huge amount of empathy with his clients with a great attention to details loads of ‘cool’.
A few more things …

Now here’s check list of aspects you might consider when preparing your presentation:

Age Range

Gender balance

Educational Background

Occupations

Social Status

Lifestyles

Ethnicity

Broad values

Their topic background and

Audience knowledge of your topic

There are other aspects I sure you can identify and consider. What does this mean when you are structuring your speech?
Speech Framework

Together with the purpose of the speech and understanding the way people listen, you can structure your speech to connect with your audience. Notice I said structure, not pander.

Audiences are intelligent and can smell pandering a mile off. You can also include short stories, appropriate metaphors or examples to connect to your listeners taking into account aspects in the check list. Now here’s a structure you might like to consider. A framework for creating a speech, irrespective if your speech is three minutes, or a keynote 40 “minuter’, with questions, is relatively simple.
A Strong Intro
A strong introduction isn’t a lame or badly told joke. In fact jokes are out particularly if they don’t relate to your topic. Second, very few people can tell a joke well. I can’t so I don’t bother, but there are other ways that are far more successful in engaging your audience to create empathy or to connect.

There’s the great Relevant Story or the Grand Challenge, the Mighty Question or the Intrigue techniques, just to name a few.

You can combine a few of these techniques to make a really powerful first impression that punches into person’s Permanent Memory. Some speakers create what they call their signature introduction or a number of introductions depending on the type or composition of their audiences.

Punching into Permanent Memory can make what you have to say be remembered a long time, at least long enough to visit your website or contact you straight after the speech to engage with you.

A colleague in a client relation speech used the ‘Love your clients to death.’ signature phrase More than 20 years later, my accountant and advisor, still remembers Winston’s ‘Love your clients to death.’ Those five words punched into David’s permanent memory.

Now David doesn’t actually love his clients to death, but does give excellent client service and this is why he’s been my accountant for more than 30 years. Client service is a great and the best marketing tool
A Test

In my training courses my students have to give a three minute speech and engage with three members of the audience who afterwards voluntarily approach them to further engage.

Impossible? No not at all. All need is a great opening, a middle that punches into permanent memory and a quick effective exit In the next blog I’ll outline a way or two to create the middle or body of your speech and your exit. Cheers Christian Peterson The quality of your speech is the response you get, not just your words.
In the meantime you might like to check out the free videos at http://www.careerrenovatorsexpress.com

Why people fear speaking in public?

To keep developing and renovating your career requires honing your communication skills, including speaking in public,.

Speaking in public terrifies many people. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Speaking in public for the first time absolutely petrified me.

It was at my wedding reception.

As the groom, I absolutely messed it up big time. My wedding day was great, except for that bumbling speech

A few months later I vowed I would learn how to speak in public and not feel sick in the stomach ever again.

At first people told me that a speech consists of a beginning, middle and end.

I was also told that what you need to do in a speech is “… first tell them what the speech is about, then tell them a few points in the middle, and finally tell them what the speech was about, again.”

Simple, but not very helpful, as the pit of my stomach continued to churn.

Always my little voice in my head said:

“Why would anyone want to hear what I have to say?”

“Will they think I’m bumbling fool?”

“There are better and more qualified people to speak?” etc.

I had to get over it and conquer that voice.
Speech Production

That I did with a speech production system based on:

Be absolutely clear on why you are speaking

Research your topic thoroughly

Identify and construct you particular point of view

Assemble your arguments, if required (I use a mind map process)

Understand your Audience as much as you can

Write your speech, but learn not to read it

Take your speech from the page into your head

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse

Learn to work without your aids,

Reduce, or elimina5te, PowerPoint Purgatory

Visit the venue where you’ll deliver your speech

Write the MC’s introduction notes and finally

Be prepared to response to your audience.

I remember a lecturer at university who was fanatical about starting his presentation exactly on time, to the second.

On one occasion, the location of lecture was changed and we weren’t told.

Ten minutes later we discovered the new location and marched into the hall.

To our astonishment there was the Professor, with an overhead and pointer, lecturing to an empty hall and continued to do so while we took our seats.

He was a great lecturer, but a little eccentric and thought an audience was irrelevant to doing his job.

After decades of broadcasting and speaking in public, I still follow a speaking process, when I blog, interview, speak in public, and now when I broadcast via the Internet.

On second thoughts, maybe I’m a bit weird too.
So What’s the Purpose of Your Speech?

A well-known Australian broadcaster and journalist, Terry, pointed me in the right direction to overcome my fear of a microphone and speaking to large audiences.

He dared me to become intelligible and told me that for every long interview he prepared by researching and reading the relevant material for about eight hours. He then worked out if he had a unique point of view or insight about the topic.

Being intelligible meant devoting time to preparing questions and arguments to create an insightful point of view.

Terry, my mentor, lived in fear that he would ask stupid questions and make stupid statements and therefore insult his guest and his audience.

For 40 weeks every year, Terry conducted five one-hour interview programs every week, with at least 1600 hours of preparation. He devoted this effort to engage his audience and build audience loyalty. This he did for 30 years.

As a broadcaster, he was absolutely clear of his purpose – to engage, inform, entertain and build a loyal audience.

Terry said the same applied to speaking in public.

When he spoke at a conference, as a keynote speaker, his research, thinking time, preparation and rehearsal took days.

Understanding the Purpose is critical to overcoming Speaking Fear

I also witnessed a well-known science journalist, who was a broadcaster and writer, present his keynote speech that ended in disaster. The audience stopped listening 10 minutes into his speech and booed him in the end.

Later I discovered he prepared his speech from photo copies of newspaper articles, while flying from Sydney to Adelaide.

His first mistake was a lack of preparation and he thought that as an accomplished speaker he could ‘wing’ it.

Dennis always did his preparation, but on this occasion he wasn’t able to because of un-foreseen circumstance.

Speaking Purposes
There are many purposes or reasons why you might make a speech.

If you are not clear of your Purpose, you’ll probably end up lacking confidence and will eventually spiral into a pitiful performance.

Here’s a Purposes Check List:

Inspire

Inform

Convince

Entertain

Congratulate

Admonish

Engage

Resign

Accept an Award

Clam an audience

To tell a story

Introduce a new idea, concept or a new process and

Many more.

It’s absolutely critical to be perfectly clear of the purpose of you presentation. Throughout you speech you may have a combination of purposes

This is such an obvious statement, yet many potential speakers forget to ask this question before putting fingers to keyboard.

Always I ask myself “What’s the purpose(s) of the speech?”

The Purpose of this Blog is to help readers overcome their fear of speaking.

Always spend a little time clarifying your Purpose, by thinking of the Outcome you want to achieve and maybe work backwards

And don’t be afraid to ask the organisers of the event, who might be paying your speaking fee, what they expect from your speech and what they think the audience might want – to be inspired, to be entertained or to be intrigued or something else. The organisers will be very grateful that you are thinking of their audience and the success of the event.

Know Your Audience

Now I hear you say “How do you know your audience and who are in your audience?”

In the next blog I’ll offer a few ways to understand your audience and how you can find out a little about them.

By the way by filling in your details in the box, we’ll let you know when the next blog is posted.

Till then, have yourself the best week possible.

<itunes:summary>To keep developing and renovating your career requires honing your communication skills, including speaking in public,.

Speaking in public terrifies many people. It doesn't have to be that way.

Speaking in public for the first time absolutely petrified me.

It was at my wedding reception.

As the groom, I absolutely messed it up big time. My wedding day was great, except for that bumbling speech

A few months later I vowed I would learn how to speak in public and not feel sick in the stomach ever again.

“Will they think I’m bumbling fool?”

I had to get over it and conquer that voice.

That I did with a speech production system based on:

Be absolutely clear on why you are speaking
	Research your topic thoroughly

In Networking 1, the First Five Minutes, I mentioned Elevator Statements (EVs) and how they are critical to successful networking.

So what’s an Elevator Statement?

Here’s what they aren’t.

EV’s aren’t speeches or pitches.

I have an absolute aversion to the word pitch. Whenever a person pitches to me I know they want something, usually to sell me something.

It’s usually not about my needs, it’s about my money.

EV’s don’t produce instant careers, or instant anything. They might induce you to by a raffle ticket for a charity, but that’s about all.

However an EV can produce an opportunity to develop or renovate your career or produce some business opportunities.

The only purpose of an EV is to start a conversation and gain permission to continue that conversation.

During that conversation you can build initial credibility, become liked, which can lead to trust and further down the track a relationship, a personal one like a date, or friendship or a business relationship.

If you are smart, you’ll first discover a lot about the person you are chatting with.

You can achieve this by just asking non-intrusive questions and then really listening to their answers.

During that conversation you will be able to discover what they do for a living, whether they a single, and even if they work for themselves, a corporation, have their own business or whether they are in-between jobs.

You’ll also discover whether that person is a genuine prospect, who might want the solution you have to enhance their organisation or themselves.

If they’re not a genuine prospect just enjoy their company or politely move on.

If you’re still asking them questions and listening, in no time they’ll generally ask you “What you do?”.

This is the opportunity for you to use an Elevator Statement, which must be a truthful statement not one you make up to scam them to get their business.

After your EV, they might show a little more interest and ask you, “How do you do that?”

If they are really interested they will ask you more questions and for your business or personal card. You might then ask if they would like more information.

You can point them to your website or find out if they would like a further chat. If so, ask for their business card or ask permission to ring their assistant for a suitable time for an appointment to discuss the person’s needs and possible solutions .

Being able to place your hand on their office door handle is a fantastic outcome of your elevator statement and your networking skills.

Networking can be learnt and Elevator Statements can be crafted easily and quickly.

Everything is easier when you know how.

The Power of an Elevator Statement.
First, EV’s are a very short statement of what you do that meets the needs of the person you are talking with, which will engage that person.

Usually your statement should be an average of 35 to 45 words long.

The average person speaks at about three words a second, which gives you a maximum of 15 seconds to deliver your EV.

The aim of the statement is to elicit a question from the other person – “How do you do that?”.

This gives you permission to engage the person a little more.

You might remember the aged care CEO, Winston, at the dinner party, who award my company a significant contract to manage a crisis at his organisation.

A few weeks before the dinner party, at sunny afternoon Sunday barbeque, we first met. We spent some time talking about our football teams, Melbourne FC and Carlton FC.

We ‘chin-wagged’ (Aussie slang for an enthusiastic conversation) for about an hour about the virtues and skills of various players, and of course the coaches.

Eventually, our conversation turned to what we did.

With a question, Winston revealed that he was the CEO of the oldest aged care facility in Australia.

Then it was my turn. “What do you do?”

“My company, Taking Control Communications, helps organisations manage issues and crises, particularly in the media and with critical stakeholders,” was my answer – just a 19 word and a seven seconds EV.

Then we went on talking about something else and enjoying the sun, beer and food.

Before I left the barbeque, Winston asked for my business card.

A couple of weeks later Winston rang and invited me to dinner, during which in his study he asked me how I conducted my business. The pyramid of connection started to expanded.

By the end of the evening he told me his crisis and asked me to submit a proposal to meet his needs.

Winston accepted my proposal, which over a year returned over $100,000. Over the years, Networking and EV’s have yielded many more contracts, large and small.

Sometimes networking produces quick contracts, within days. It depends on how urgent the potential client’s needs are.

Now when someone asks about Career Renovators Express, the EV is:

“Career Renovators Express helps anyone create a secure and sustainable career, even if they have little money or haven’t a clue how to get started.”

So What Happened with Winston?

A number of things.

Our chat about our football team created a mutual ‘likeability’ factor.

My business card named my website,. My website listed my credentials, and some people and organisations with whom I worked, which Winston checked. He contacted some of them to see if I was any good at what I did.

That brought the ‘credibility’ factor into play.

The elements of this networking process were:

Social Likeability

Questions

Listening

Patience

An Effective Elevator Statement

Confirmed Credibility

Trust creation and development

A Door Handle to an important office

and finally no ‘pitch’

This whole process took about six weeks to achieve.

Networking takes time, which is the reason you should network carefully and intelligently every week. I have two or three potential business relationships evolving at the moment.

By the way, Winston and I are friends and have been for about 10 years.

Elevator Statement Anatomy

Elevator Statement consists of number elements.

First, the Name of your organisation.

Second, What the organisation does or you do them

For Whom.

Third, “Why” do you or organisation do what it does or you do.

Note there is no”How” at this stage

If the person is interested in the Elevator Statement, they usually ask “How?”.

“How?” is a Permission question which lets you to tell them more, not too much though. You need to engage them not drown them in a flood of information!

In the case of Career Renovators Express the “How” is based on:

Re-defining what a career needs to be in the 21<sup>st</sup> Century;

What your education didn’t teach you to thrive, not just survive, in the ever changing 21<sup>st</sup> Century;

By an on-line course, webinars, and even one-on-one Skype counselling;

Achieved with a reasonable investment and a premium fee for Skype Counselling;

The Outcome of the program is a success producing plan to create or enhance your career

Much and more.

Now, here’s the anatomy of the Career Renovators Express Elevator Statement: “Career Renovators Express (Name) helps anyone (for Whom) create a secure and sustainable career (What and Why), even if they (Whom again) have little money, have been made redundant, are retired, are in a career slump or want to return to work quickly.” About 15 seconds and 43 words long.

You’ll notice this EV is a little different from the earlier version, which brings me to my final point. Regularly visit you EV and revise or expand it if necessary.

Sorry, another final, final point, practise your EV until it has moved from the page to your head.

Why not have a go at constructing your Elevator Statement about yourself or your organisation.

Till next time, when I’ll outline how to construct a three minute speech, how it can enhance your career.

Cheers for now … Christian Peterson

<itunes:summary>In Networking 1, the First Five Minutes, I mentioned Elevator Statements (EVs) and how they are critical to successful networking.

If you never Network your glass will be empty.

Network occasionally and your glass may be half full

If Networking is a way of life you’ll need many glasses.

An Essential Skill

Whether you are employed, between jobs, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 plus, or returning to the work force after children, networking is a critical tool for success.

It’s also critical if you are starting or maintaining a micro business, whether you chose face-to-face networking or via the web.

Networking Drivers

Here are a few reasons why you might like to actively network.

You want a promotion

You would like a salary raise or an improved package

Searching for a new Job offer

Want to reinvent your career.

You would like to find additional contracts

You want people to have a look at your website

You would like to arrange a meeting with potential clients.

There are a host of other reasons.

Most career opportunities happen while meeting people, whether it’s at business, social or even as a speaker at Rotary, Lions, or other like groups.

Never Sell, Just Listen …

Because of a 20 minute speech at a Rotary Club my company, Taking Control Communications, gained a $350,000 communication contract that lasted 18 months.

At a dinner party, a CEO from aged care organisation said, “Please give me a ring on Monday I think I need your services”.

That dinner party started a 10 year contract, which generated significant revenue.

They weren’t flukes.

From those contracts, my mini company of one, me, earned hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of business.

No, I’m not a great salesman, but did learn how to network when to produce a business card.

Asking questions, listening to answers, waiting to be asked what you do and crafting your answers truthfully are the keys.

Are you really serious?

If you are not networking, then you are not serious about your career, whether it’s as a “tradie”, as a professional, as an independent service provider or if you want to be an internet business giant.

Networking is also an essential if you are out of work.

Many people, however, live in fear of networking. Why?

The most common reason is, “I’m too shy … I couldn’t just walk up to a stranger and start talking to him or her.”

The real answer is they are afraid because they don’t know how to network. They don’t use a successful process.

Step 1 – Research, research …

Networking isn’t a complicated science. It’s not a science at all; it’s a very simple process.

The first step is to do research, particularly where and who want to network.

Try not to network the room.

Restrict your networking to a few critical people. Discover what problems they or their organisation have.

Read the business sections of newspapers, go to business breakfasts, conferences and use the most valuable tool all, websites.

Now you can spend a pile of money or next to nothing but your time to network.

But whatever you spend, dollars or time, you need to know how.

Remember it’s easy when you know how.

A professional head hunter told me this story.

A few years ago, President Bill Clinton was in town. His hosts held an exclusive business lunch, where 50 high flyers attended at $500 a head, except for nine of Australia’s leading CEOs.

Nine seats were available at the President’s table at $1200 dollars each. The lunch would last for two hours – cost $600 per hour.

John, the head hunter, decided he would pay the $1200 to sit on President Clinton’s table.

Now, John wasn’t their just to listen and talk with Mr Clinton. He was there to connect with one of the CEOs he knew was going to be on that table.

John was head hunting for an international corporate client who want a particular CEO to defect to his company.

He connected with the CEO and earned a handsome $100,000 fee when his target joined his client’s firm. A $1200 investment gave a $100,000 return.

What John did was called Strategic Networking.

Now I’m not suggesting you to have to spend $1200 to network, although a conference could cost that, with travel and accommodation included.

There are plenty of free, $50 to $75 local functions you can attend.

Step Two – Ask Questions, Listen and …

After the preliminary niceties, ask your target a question or two and then listen to what they have to say. People love to talk about themselves and their organisation. These are two topics they know best.

Eventually, they’ll ask you a question or two.

The third step is to answer the questions concisely, with an engaging statement.

The statement should provoke the question. “How do you do that?’

Now you have made a good start.

Five Minutes to Connect

The first 15 seconds and the next five minutes are critical. If your target wants to move on in just over five minutes, then he or she is not interested in you or business.

So have a concise statement about what you do and how you help people, and businesses, particularly their businesses, profession or industry.

In the Networking business that engaging statement is called an Elevator Statement

With a little help you can construct or modify your prepared statement to match their needs while you listen to them.

First 15 Seconds

Now why are the first 15 seconds so critical?

Because in those few seconds a person decides, subconsciously, if they ‘like’ you. Those few seconds are known as the ‘likeability’ seconds.

Sub-consciously, they’ll assess how you look, your smile, and your tidiness, how clean your shoes are, and even how you smell!

In the next five minutes, you can build on that likeability factor, eventually moving onto to the credibility and initial trust factors.

In career and business networking your goal is to be able to place your hand on the door handle of the person you have connected with so that you can have further discussions about meeting their needs.

In the case of the Rotary speech the contact took five weeks to come back with a contract that lasted two years. From the networking encounter I gained permission to arrange a meeting to expand my Elevator Statement further engage and form a business relationship with the potential client.

Step 3 – Elevator Statements

In the next edition Career Renovators Express (CREX) I’ll deal with how to create that winning Elevator Statement after you ask a few questions and do some empathic listening

so you can create a’door handle’ that opens doors for you.

Persistent and Consistent Networking

The “take-home” in this Career Renovators Express is that you need to network persistently and consistently.

At the very least you probably need to network once or twice a month if you have an established career.

If you are really serious you might have to start networking every week until you establish your renovated career.

My general rule is that you can subtlety network anywhere, any time – on a plane, at a social function, at work and even at sporting function. You never know when an opportunity presents itself.

You would like to arrange a meeting with potential clients.

There are a host of other reasons.

Most career opportunities happen while meeting people, whether it’s at business, social or even as a speaker at Rotary, Lions, or other like groups.

Now I’m not suggesting you to have to spend $1200 to network, although a conference could cost that,</itunes:summary>

Whether you realize it or not you already have the keys to renovate your career. Many are hidden from your view.

If you start to use the Keys it will open your mind and let you take actions to create a great future.

You have a unique way of seeing things. What you believe and value is also unique. What you are passionate about, what motivates you and how you manage your moods and emotions are also unique.

Need a Career Renovation?… Check out the free training videos at http://www.careerrenovatorsexpress.com

How you take control to renovate your career will be unique. It just takes a little creativity.

Key 1 – You are an ‘Experiment of One

People who are successful are committed to constant improvement, even when they get things wrong.

Persistent intelligent improvement in whatever area you choose, can’t be practised every once in a while when you feel like it. It must be constant, backed up by daily action.

Keys 2 – Persistent Improvement Always

People who are successful are committed to constant improvement, even when they get things wrong.

Persistent intelligent improvement in whatever area you choose, can’t be practised every once in a while when you fell like it. It must be constant, backed up by daily action.

Key 3 - Small Manageable Steps

Remember when you or a friend renovated a house, the stress and sometimes the distress, this caused was enormous.

It’s the same when you try to renovate your career, particularly if you haven’t got a tried and successful process.

Too much change can cause stress. Small planned steps lead to attainable and sustainable success using a tried and true process.

Key 4 – First, work on what you can change
.

Never spend too much time on what you can’t change quickly. The big changes come from manageable steps. Some changes can take a little time, which you can work on as you start to take control of your future.

Don’t dream about winning the lottery. Your chances are millions to one.

It is better to complete one realistic and achievable action every day, than live on hope.

Motivation and hope produce nothing. Actions produce results.

Key 5 – Backsliding is OK

Backsliding is how we learn to get things right. The greatest sin when you backslide is wallowing in your mistake. Get back on the horse as quickly as possible.

Feeling guilty is a waste of time. Guilt vanishes with actions.

Key 6 – Learn to Monitor Your Career
.

Learn to monitor your career in a changing global market place. International large companies with deep pockets are looking for takeover targets to restructure, sell off pieces and reduce running costs and rising sovereign debt is a clue to changing employment conditions.

Remember the movie ‘Pretty Women’ when the character Edward says, I buy companies, then sells bits off. Watch out for those companies and a business that borrows a lot of money to grow. That’s where the western world is today.

Keep yourself informed, read the financial sections of newspapers or better still monitor the blogs and publication on the web.

However, there are still heaps of opportunities, so don’t give up hope.

Key 7 – Fuel the Fire Within
.

Spending a few moments everyday reminding yourself of the benefits of taking control of your career – no fear, career choices, sustainable security and time with the people your love are great benefits.

Sure have a vision of where you want to be in a year, in two years or even five.

However, work out what actions you need to take to fuel your future, right now.

In my case I had to recover from a critical illness, learn new software, create a survival package and maintain an action producing attitude.

Key 8 – The Past does not equal the Future

Don’t let the past destroy your future career. The past only equals the future career if you let it.

Easier said than done. Here’s a metaphor I heard on a course I attended.

Think of your life as football field.

In your football team you have a number of players – attitude, skills, values, beliefs and actions. You also have friends, relatives and other people.

A lack of fitness, mental strength and self-destructive beliefs and actions may have determined your past.

One by one, change or remove those life team ‘members’ and replace them with those that will help create the future you want.

A good idea is to renovate your career to create a great and satisfying future.

Key 9 – Use a Quick Step by Step Process

Now you could take a couple of years to discover and create a new career or a quick logical one that takes a month or two.

As someone wise and successful said, “First I want to pick the fruit and later I’ll find how the tree grows.”

Kick start your career using a true and tried process. Be careful of so called ‘Silver bullets’ that cost a lot and take 12 months to complete.

Key 10 – Be and have Fun

Be fun and have fun and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how people react, what turns up and how you’ll feel.

If you ‘give’ before you ‘get’ with a smile in your voice, in your writing and on your face, the world will surprise you. Opportunities will surface constantly.

Now before attended I thought Ho Hum, probably the same old crowd of motivational speakers spruiking their speaking services, ebooks and pbooks, CDs and videos.

After five hours of presentation onslaught, the last speaker made me sit up and take notice – not a CD or Video set or booking form in sight.

Now I thought I knew heaps about the online world, the trends and what was possible.

This is what I learnt.

Not Tomorrow Land

Tesco, a British super chain store, wanted to establish over hundred out lets in South Korea.

The capital required to do this was astronomical, even in good economic times, let alone now.

Tesco became aware of how South Koreans shopped for supermarket products. Premium shop sites were too costly and rare.

The walls of the underground trains were not.

Tesco brought two ideas together – free wall space and the smart phone.

On the walk ways of the underground graphics of Tesco products were displayed, with embedded chips in the graphic. The price of each were displayed, ‘specials were also displayed.

With your smart phone held up to product display you could purchase your days or weeks shopping while going home. A smart phone application identified where you wanted your shopping delivered and deducted the cost of the goods from your debit or credit account.

This is not Tomorrow Land, this is now!

Type in Tesco and South Korea into Google and find out the trends in shopping.

After watching the video retail staff should be starting to think about renovating their careers.

A second example that blew me away was the smart change room to try on clothes. The room existed on walls also.

You saw a dress or a suit you liked displayed on the wall. Again using your smart phone or tablet you pointed it at the item of clothing and on your tablet or phone you saw the item on your personal avatar which was a replica of your body shape, weight, colouring and height.

“No the colour not right … lets change it to navy. CLICK!”

You could even rotate your avatar; have a look from the back and from the side. Eventually you will be able to have the item altered, buy it and have it delivered to your door.

Future applications could include hairstyles, facelifts and goodness knows what.

I’m not too keen to try on underwear while waiting for the train! A new perversion in the making!

The Internet and search engines give you the opportunity to be aware of trends and opportunities at all levels, if you care to do the research.

A Culture of Success

The first step to renovating your career is to be aware of yourself, particularly your career attitude.

Sure you need to be aware of what drives you, your values your beliefs, your knowledge and skills

Recently I heard on BBC Wide-wide radio how elite athletes prepare to compete for Olympic Gold. Sure there are different processes for different sports, but each had an attitude to that helped them move forward to succeed.

Of the ten athletes interviewed, each had different attitudes. Some trained no matter what, forging forward. Others gave training a miss when they knew that training wouldn’t help them move forward. Others only had a light session when things weren’t going right. The take home message is different attitudes can produce gold.

Each however never gave up to achieving their dream of standing on the top podium at the Olympic Games.

My attitude to success is based Intelligent Persistence. Yours might be something different.

Your attitude will determine the quality of your life and career success.

What I’ve come to appreciate is that one’s attitude is more important than knowledge, one’s failures and successes and even what other people think of you.

Attitude is more important than your appearance, talent and skills.

Your attitude will make or break a career, a business, and even your home.

You cannot change how people will act.

And that you cannot change the inevitable.

However you can choose your attitude to improve your life and the lives of others.

Life is 10 per cent of what happens to you and 90 per cent how we react to what has happened to you.

So what attitude could you adopt to renovate you career?

That depends on a host of things. Let’s start with Awareness.

Personal Awareness

For example, Jonathan Maxwell, a senior wine executive wants a career insurance policy if things go belly up in the wine business. His attitude is to undergo intensive voice training, while at the same thing setting up a small business structure. At the moment he doesn’t want to undertake any advanced marketing computer training. However he is willing to take consistent actions to improve his voice skills.

On the other hand, David Stratford has reinvented his career, found allies in China and is generating significant revenue using traditional techniques. David now wants to review his website, consider online services and become a ‘publisher’ on the www, using audio, video, and print products. David’ attitude is to learn and take the actions to achieve his online goals.

In each case Jonathan and David are very aware of their current

Attitudes

Values,

Beliefs

Skills

Knowledge

Financial and

Technological Assets

Both John and David have the first Level of Awareness, Personal Awareness.

There are a couple of other levels of awareness that is required to renovate your career.

Market Awareness.

This level is about being aware of where your skills, and knowledge or to put another way where your renovated service is wanted or needed,

If your local market is shedding or thinking of shedding itself of your services then you are in a potential bind.

For example, Australia car designers and engineers heard the rumour that the Australian car, the Commodore and future models made be designed and manufacturer overseas, possibly Asia. There was an intensive union outcry and the media had a field day. The senior executives of General Motors Holden company claim a decision hasn’t been hasn’t been made yet.

Similarly, there was and is an outcry when baggage handlers went on rolling strikes disrupting services. The CEO suddenly grounded the domestic and international Qantas fleet, bring chaos and stranding thousands of passengers in Australia and around the World.

These are very public examples of what’s been happening to companies in the USA because of Globalisation, competition and cheaper labour costs.

There was the cheap ‘Bra and Trousers’ War between manufacturers in China and the European Union, particularly France, where the European manufacturers couldn’t produce the items at the same price as those in China- balance of trade issue I believe.

There is a lesser known fact that China has built 160 plus new towns to house five million people each. All these towns stand empty. The shopping malls, school buildings, roads and other infrastructure are going to ruin before occupied. Why? The local population cannot afford the prices asked for apartments and other amenities.

Australia and Africa have supplied and continue to supply the iron ore and other commodities for China’s growing economy and these countries have reaped massive financial rewards. How long can the China bubble grow before it bursts?

The Chinese economy is an export economy, with much of it exports going to Europe and the US!

The signs are there for another potential economic regression in the next few years. Some think it will take another decade to recover economically.

When renovating your career you have to be aware of the trends that are occurring in your city, your state, country, region and even globally.

People working in IT, finance and banks should be thinking about renovating their careers.

Before becoming totally depressed, start becoming aware of new opportunities not just where you live. Of course keep thinking locally, but be aware nationally, regionally and even globally of opportunities. There are a host opportunities.

In the next print blog you read a few ides about Technological awareness.

Till next time keep creating your future with http://www.careerrenovatorsexpress.com/
