The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision makers, and opinion formers in their own country. Upon completion of their studies in the UK, scholars are expected to return to their home country to resume their studies or work.

Scholarships are available for study for the Master's in International Strategy & Economics, the M.Litt in Middle East and Central Asian Security Studies, the M.Litt in Peace and Conflict Studies and the Master's in Sustainable Development.
Each scholarship provides tuition fees at the University of St Andrews, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only), and return air travel from the scholar's home country.

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to applicants from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan,and Uzbekistan.
Applicants must:

be nationals of, and normally resident in one of the selected countries during the academic year in which they apply for the award; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident;
display intellectual ability and leadership potential;
already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a degree of an equivalent standard to a good UK second-class Honours degree;
have passed an appropriate English language test by the time of taking up the award;
return to their home country at the end of their scholarship period to continue their studies / work there.

Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied outside of their home country.
Please note that if you have applied, or are applying, for other grants, fellowships or scholarships with the Open Society Foundations you should alert us to this in your application. While you may apply for more than one program simultaneously, you can be awarded only one Open Society Foundations scholarship or grant for a given period.
Employees, employees’ relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of the Educational Advising Centers or local Open Society Foundations representations directly involved in the Open Society Scholarship Programs administration in the region and the participating universities will not be eligible to apply for these awards.

You should complete the university’s application form 'Application for Admission to Graduate Study'.
You may obtain an application form from your local scholarship contact office, download it below, or download it from the university’s website: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/apply.
The completed forms and supporting documents must be returned to your local scholarship contact office by February 3, 2012, at the latest (see contact details below). Applicants are required to submit two copies of the application package: one original set and one photocopy of the entire application package.
Note: The four masters courses covered by the scholarship program are based in the Faculties of Arts or Science and all applicants for the MLitt Middle East and Central Asian Security Studies or the MLitt Peace and Conflict Studies are required to submit a sample piece of written work (of not more than 2,000 words in length) along with other supporting documents.
Please also enclose with each copy of your application set the Self-Assessment Form (can be downloaded with the Guidance Notes) whereby you acknowledge your compliance with the eligibility criteria for this scholarship program.

Selection Process

All completed applications received by the local scholarship contact office by the deadline will be forwarded to the University of St Andrews. Academic staff at the university will compile a shortlist.
Short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview and an English language test in their home country between mid-April and mid-May 2012. Candidates should keep their schedules free between these dates. Candidates will be informed by the local scholarship contact office at the end of March 2012 whether they have been shortlisted or not.
Interviews will be carried out by representatives of Open Society Foundtions and the University of St Andrews where possible.
Final awards will be decided jointly by the University of St Andrews and the Open Society Foundations. Candidates will be informed by early June 2012.
Please note that the local scholarship contact office staff are not involved at all in the decision-making process. They will inform applicants as soon as they can whether or not they have been successful. Please understand they will not be able to inform candidates until they have been told by the University of St Andrews and the Open Society Foundations.

Please note that all successful applicants will be expected to attend a one-month preparatory academic writing summer school in August 2012. The Open Society Scholarship Programs Pre-Academic Summer Program is designed to prepare Open Society Scholarship Programs grantees for a successful academic experience in the UK. Successful applicants will be provided with the opportunity to refine their research and writing skills through intensive courses in academic writing and social sciences. The exact date and location of the summer school will be available at a later stage in the selection process.

• Students doing their 3rd year of Masters or 4th Year of Doctoral do not qualify for a scholarship
• Students must be prepared to sign an agreement with the institution, agreeing to the conditions and expected completing date of degree.
• Students who receive external scholarships (eg NRF, MRC, WRC, etc.) may not apply for a TUT full-time postgraduate scholarship.

Value of Scholarships
Masters degree ▪ R45,000 per annum (includes tuition fees) for a maximum of 2 years
Doctoral degree - R55,000 per annum for a maximum of 3 years (Faculty will pay for tuition fees during the first year of study and it will not be subtracted from the scholarship amount)Please contact the relevant Faculty or Academic Department to ensure that the Postgraduate Degree is available before applying for the scholarship

Fujitsu Scholarship for Asia-Pacific Region Students 2012

The Fujitsu Scholarship provides full financial assistance for postgraduate education and cross-cultural management training in the East-West Knowledge Leaders Program (EWKLP) to participants from the Asia-Pacific region in USA

Eligibility:
-A bachelor’s degree or a degree equivalent to a four-year standard baccalaureate degree in any discipline from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
-A minimum TOEFL score of 577/233/90 (paper/computer/Internet), TOEIC score of 750, or IELTS overall band test result of 6.5 or higher from tests taken between December 2009 and November 2011. The following applicants are exempt from submitting an English proficiency test score:
-Applicants whose native language is English and who are from either the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, or Singapore.
- Applicants who hold a bachelor’s or advanced degree within the last five years from an accredited or recognized college or university in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, or Singapore.
-Applicants must be a resident of the state of Hawaii, U.S.A., or a citizen of one of the following countries: Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam.

Fujitsu Limited established the Fujitsu Scholarship Program in 1985 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its founding. The aim was to provide the opportunity for people from the Asia-Pacific region to contribute to the region through studying different values, cultures, and global business. This has been a Fujitsu’s key initiative for deepening the relationships between the countries and citizens of the Asia-Pacific region. This scholarship has since enabled 420 professionals from 18 countries to study cross-cultural management at JAIMS, the Japan-America Institute of Management Science, in Hawaii, U.S.A. The Fujitsu Scholarship provides full financial assistance for postgraduate education and cross-cultural management training in the East-West Knowledge Leaders Program (EWKLP) at JAIMS.
