Frankly, if my body was hurting after giving a massage I would not wait until I was in excruciating pain
to find out what I am doing wrong.

All too often, I hear about Massage Therapists that burn out because they can't give any more. They are hurting constantly!

Did you know this does NOT have to be the way???

Honestly, I want you to consider some things:

1. Do you know how to correct your body mechanics?

2. Do you give yourself a break?

3. Do you receive massage on a regular basis (more than once a month if you are working full time)?

4. Are you sure you are applying your techniques appropriately?

5. Have you ever had an instructor make sure you were performing your techniques correctly?

6. Have you adjusted your table at different heights to see what works best? Don't do what someone else told you, do what works for YOU!

7. What do you do for yourself at the end of the day to "clear" yourself AND relax ?

Recently, I saw a post on FaceBook and I was delighted to see that two massage colleagues
have written the following: (PLEASE READ)

This was taken from Art Riggs and Whitney Lowe, two of the experts in the field of Deep Tissue work!
Deep Tissue: deep tissue work is the specific manipulation of the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep Tissue manipulation therapy uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage as well as cross fiber, pin and stretch, active and passive movements with others, and the depth is more intense. It is also a more focused and slow, as it works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.") Although it is more uncomfortable then Swedish massage, it shouldn’t be painful. The presser used should not exceed a 4 to 6 (the client’s tolerance) and is only performed on one or two parts of the body.

The term “deep tissue” is often misused to identify a massage that is performed with sustained deep pressure. Deep tissue massage is a separate category of massage therapy, used to treat particular muscular-skeletal disorders and complaints and employs a dedicated set of techniques and strokes to achieve a measure of relief. It should not be confused with “deep pressure” massage, which is one that is performed with sustained strong, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session, and that is not performed to address a specific complaint. If a practitioner employs deep tissue techniques on the entire body in one session, it would be next to impossible to perform; and will lead to injury or localized muscle and nerve trauma, thereby rendering the session counterproductive. This type of work is done, in no more then 1/4th of a massage session.

This is so important to understand!

I privately mentor massage therapists and one of my students did not know this until she worked along with me. She was taught to apply more pressure
by her instructors and her trainors at her place of employment and believed this was deep tissue work aka muscle mashing. Her hands and arms and now shoulders are painful on a daily basis. Several of her colleagues have actually left massage for the same reason. Fortunately, she didn't give up! She wants to continue massage and she sought out the proper help!

Deep tissue work can actually be so easy for us to do when the application is performed correctly and the client feels like you are 'really deep'. You have to actually be more careful in your application because of this. You may even think you aren't doing anything that would feel deep because you are working with ease. Remember work SMARTER NOT HARDER!

If you are hurting, please seek out someone that can train you appropriately! Make sure you get personal attention. If you attend classes with large groups, please realize you may not get that attention you are seeking.

There is no reason to be in pain!!! How can you possibly enjoy what you are doing and give your best to a client?

I have never hurt in my entire career because of giving massage.

Why?

1. In my early years I had a mirror nearby my table so I can check in and see what I might be doing incorrectly.

2. I invested in an hydraulic table and I highly recommend this to all therapist!
Oakworks even came out with the pro lux convertible whereby you can take your portable table and place it on this unit to make it an electric lift!!!

3. I did weekly trades with my colleagues. I received a variety of types of massage too. Not the same old type. This was so beneficial because I got to experience what other people were learning. This led me to pursue more continuing education

4. STRETCH!!! You must take care of your body. Being physically able to give massage is a necessity!

5. Proper Nutrition! If you don't put healthy things in your body, how can you feel good?

Best of Luck to you on your career path.

If you are interested in private sessions with me, please email me at massageproce@gmail.com

Please take care of yourself, so you can take care of others!

So, I booked a silent yoga/chakra retreat to welcome in the New Year!

It was exactly the kick in the gluteus maximus I kneaded!

We, in the healing profession spend so much time giving. Giving physically, emotionally, mentally, physically and energetically. Some of us may realize how this takes a toll on our being and some may not realize it yet.

I can tell you, that even with all I do to stay in balance, I realized this weekend that I, too, kneaded more!

The times are shifting and energy is moving fast!

Truthfully, I had no idea exactly what I was getting myself into, however , I 'knew' intuitively I kneaded to go.

Our first evening started with 2 hours of vinyasa yoga. I wasn't quite sure what that meant, as it wasn't the typical name for yoga I 've done in the past. With a back injury that incapacitated me with pain from any vigorous workouts for almost 5 years, I was happy to be going and hoping that I could keep up. ;)

The first evening brought revelations! First, I was happy to move without pain and try to keep up with bodies 20-30 years younger than me. The program was designed to flow with and open the chakras. The first meditation reminded me how much I missed being the student again and connecting with spirit in such a divine healing space.

The following day we did (3) 2 hr. sessions of yoga. WOW! Yes, I was exhausted at moments, inspired, sweaty, happy, sad, joyful and amazed! All of this while pushing through an upper respiratory cold too.

Yes, I was determined to LET GO of what I no longer wanted and open up to a path that will shine bright.

One of the rocks they had in their lounge, jumped out at me and on it was printed "LET GO"! For those of you who have taken my Lomi classes, you know this is a SIGN :).

The path? What is it? Obvious some might think. However, after 25 years of being in the healing profession, with its up and downs and all arounds I was wondering??????? Still????

The final day brought more revelation and the guided meditations took me to a mountain and a path and symbol and a release and so much more!

I am renewed! I am inspired! I am ready ~~~~ to continue on this healing path and to provide my students with all that I have been shown

Welcome 2012! I am ready! A New Beginning is emerging. Watch me grow and shine my light! Come along with me, if you like!

In order to inspire you must be inspired!

I am continually dedicated to the healing path ! I have much more to share.

What Self Care Practice will you begin in 2012? Join me for a Self Care CE workshop this year!

While I don't expect every massage therapist to give the same massage or have the
same skill level; I do look for certain things that I would hope were taught in massage school. Apparently not ? Or you missed that day?

So, in the event you were sleeping here are a few tips. (Please keep in mind I am writing this because all of these things have happened to me over the years).

1. Review your client history form (MAKE THE TIME), especially when they tell you they have an issue. Sounds simple but many do not do this :(

2. Find out what they like or don't like, including pressure, techniques, creams or lotions. Clients may have an allergy to your products or prefer no parabens, etc.
(Maybe they left their previous massage therapist because they didn't like something)

3. Make sure you ARE NOT RUSHED - that really does transfer in your touch. You don't think you are rushed ?- take a step back and breathe - it always helps to slow down even more and get yourself centered!

4. Know and understand how your techniques effect the body and the outcome. Seriously. What ones do you use to relax a client vs. therapeutic treatment. By the way relaxing strokes are not performed vigorously.

5. Please don't plop your hands on a body. You think you don't - Just pay a bit more attention to this please. Honor the body! It really is a privilege to touch another person.

6. Lay on your table and get a massage. Is it comfortable? Are the sounds in your room conducive to relaxation? Is the face cradle comfortable? It's important to know what your clients are experiencing. Ask others too.

7. Please have experienced massage therapists critique your massage as you continue to learn. Don't "assume" you are performing techniques correctly.

8. Temperature is relative. Just because something doesn't feel hot to you it doesn't mean the person on the table perceives it the same way. You are working and building up energy. They are relaxing and 'chillin' out. BE CAREFUL please with stones, hot packs and hot towels

9. Don't apply an essential oil or product that may cause a reaction without asking your client first.

10. Please don't keep walking away from the table, especially with body parts exposed to get cold. Keep your products within arms reach, on a shelf or use a holster.

11. Please don't leave the room in the middle of a massage, unless the fire alarm goes off. Very disruptive. If you must for some reason, please remember to come back onto the body with ease and respect.

12. Give yourself more than 5-10 minutes in between massages. Why rush? Seriously is this what massage is all about.

13. Put some extra padding on your massage table. It feels so much better.

14. Don't freeze your clients out with the Air conditioner, just because you are hot. Have extra blankets. Don't tell them "really, it's cold?". If you notice a body part is chilly, warm it up!

15. SO you like to work barefoot, that's ok . But please groom your feet and if you have band aids etc., wrapped around your toes, put socks or clogs on please. We do look through the face cradle ;)

16. If you want to use an elbow, please learn how to use it. Don't poke into someone's hip or buttocks and think that will feel good, especially in a relaxing massage.

17. Just out of massage school? You think you deserve $60-80/hr? Please think twice. You are not up to the skill level of experienced therapists. Go get some continuing education first.

18. Take a class in communication and listening skills, pretty please! Pay Attention!

19. Check in to see if your client is cold or hot, pressure more or less? Don't assume they are comfortable because they don't say anything.

20. Business is slow? Maybe it is you or your massage?
Seriously, take a business class or two with an experienced and successful therapist.

21. If you think you already address all of this very well - think again? It is always good to re-evaluate ourselves no matter how much experience we have in the profession. (Including me)

22. Oh and while I am at it: Please don't put your hands on a face after you touched the feet!!! Clean your hands. Get a sanitizer or keep wipes near your table. Wrap the feet in warm towels and you can wash your hands while the feet are staying warm. Or Start with the face first.

23. Please do my abs or at least ask? I get so disappointed when my abs aren't included, it's part of my body and helps my back.

24. Get used to starting in either position. Your client may have a preference and it is 'their' session. Don't tell them you prefer to start a certain way.

25. My time and money is just as valuable as yours - don't waste either. Try giving a feedback form --- anonymously. (I unfortunately have wasted much time and money on massages. How many others feel that way out there?)

So, when I hear therapists tell me there business isn't thriving or they can't make a living doing massage, perhaps these are some of the "smaller" reasons.

Remember, MOST people, in my experience, WILL NOT tell you how they really feel.

Are you open to critical feedback from your client? You need to be or they may not come back and they definitely won't refer anyone .

Get massages from experienced therapists too - you can learn A LOT!

I have also heard therapists say they don't want someone telling them how to do their job. Hmmmm? Are we that "IN TUNE" and knowledgeable? I understand we may know more than our client, but what if they are a massage therapist or have been receiving massage longer than you have been practicing? Especially one that knows what they want. When I say I want to relax, I expect to receive that - simple, I think.

When I hurt, please Don't try to "fix" me, I don't need fixing. All too often, I have had therapist think their modality is the way to 'fix' me. Please don't hurt me in your process.

I have also heard from 'sources' in schools, that instructors are not allowed to give critiquing that is termed 'negative' - because the school needs to get paid. They don't want students upset. So students believe they are good! Not all schools are like this, but some are, sadly. (Students don't even know this by the way)

Touch is truly an art and a privilege- master it. Don't assume you have - ask your colleagues.

The General Public does not or cannot always give you valuable critique on skills. Most are happy just to be touched.

Ok, I will stop now and leave you to comment on the things you like or dislike when getting a massage. Thanks for listening!

I want to see you be successful - so if I can give you any hints or suggestions, it will be my pleasure.

I thank all the people in my life that made suggestions and continue to do so - you should too!

Happy Massaging!

PS For those of you who don't know me, I have been a massage therapist for 25 years and a massage instructor for 20 years.

I am also offering a Post Grad Mentoring Program Beginning January 2012. (Earn up to 50 CE's). Applications are being accepted now. Only the serious, dedicated individual need apply.

I am writing this blog for all those that are in pain after giving massage.

In 25 years of my career I have never had pain in my hands, wrists, arms, shoulders etc
after a massage.

Nowadays I hear so many LMT's tell me they are hurting. They have carpal tunnel symptoms.
I hate to hear this.

It is so easy to prevent these problems.

So I am reaching out to my colleagues who are in pain.
Please take care of yourself! Why would you allow yourself to hurt? Would
you let your clients feel this way?

Simple daily things to do:

1. BREATH!!!! It's FREE. Inhale to a count of 5 FULLY (Expand and stretch your muscles, get oxygen moving). Hold for 5, Exhale FULLY to 5, hold and repeat for 5. Do this regularly

2. STRETCH!! Remember all those stretches you learned in massage school for your client? Why aren't you doing them for yourself?! DAILY!

3. Love yourself enough to take care of yourself! EVERY DAY
Eat Healthy, Get Fresh Air, Have Fun, Pace Yourself

4. Massage your own hands and arms at the end of each day.

5. Water you say? Drink "GOOD" water ! pH balanced water , oxygenated water. Avoid cheap bottled water.

6. Salt baths. At the end of the day soak in a sea salt bath. It's very healing!

7. Check your table height. Is it too low? Put a mirror in your office. See if you are leaning over too much? Raise the table PLEASE!!!

8. Deep Tissue? Hurting your thumbs? Don't push harder - work smarter! Learn how to access muscle tissue from different angles by changing the angle of your thumb pad. MUCH EASIER!

9. Pace yourself. I know many of you work for companies that 'crank' them out. See if your manager will give you more time in between or not over book you. JUST ASK. Doesn't work - find a new place to work.

LASTLY:
GET REGULAR MASSAGE!
No time you say? No Money? Honestly? Really?

Do you have time for parties? Do you pay for tattoos? Do you pay for cable TV?
Do you buy junk food? Do you go to movies?

Need I say more???

These are JUST some of the tips I can offer for longevity of your career!

Please take care of yourself and make it a priority today!

Yes, I do take appointments on occasion to help my fellow collegues.

Have a beautiful day - be well - enjoy your massage,

I often wonder how many people actually enter the massage field because it is a 'calling' or because they 'think' they found a way to make a lot of money?

For me, massage was a calling. For this I am grateful.
My path has brought me to many places of self healing.

As a former owner of a holistic center and massage school, I have witnessed so many beautiful revelations and transformations from clients and students.

Today, however, as a continuing education provider I wonder how many of you have chosen this path because it was a calling?

Why am I asking? Because I have seen a great change in the quality of massage therapists and student. It seems that with more Tech schools and colleges offering massage programs, SOMETIMES there are people in these courses that truly were not 'called". They don't seem to take it seriously and have no clue of the depth of this healing 'art'.

I have been trained in many traditional styles of bodywork and healing methods and have found that the depths go far beyond our basic training. Have you experienced this yet in your profession? Are you stuck where you started? Do you love what you do or dread it daily?

The Healing Arts can bring so many valuable components to your life and your practice. Allow yourself to experience the healing process that you can go through to enhance your own life first!

Consider taking classes that will support your growth personally and professionally.

Don't complain about money aka the economy. If you have money for socializing and cable TV, mobile phones and parties and clothes you don't really need, you should have money for the investment into your future too!

The Healing Arts is a path. A journey. It is a gift that is given to us and deep respect and gratitude should be held for it daily.

Do you thank your mentors?
Do you honor the lineages that have gone before you?

I wonder how much you realize the privilege it is to "touch another life"?
Every breath one takes, every touch one receives is a connection to the divine source of creation! Think about it!

To touch a life, to have someone in your hands can change their life forever!

Massage is not just about working out the stress in muscles. It goes deeper. It goes to the core of one's being. It goes to the heart and soul. Remember that!

To all the new graduates in massage, I wish you much success, healing and wellness on your path of healing.

that a client may not know their boundaries. New therapists might fear they will be propositioned and have expressed numerous concerns to me about this type of situation.

There also seems to be a concern that some massage therapist are not legitimate and may contribute to giving 'us' a bad name in the industry.

While I know this is a true concern and I have no doubt that we need to be aware and cautious in our practice, I am going to take another leap to bring up another concern I have about boundaries.

As Massage Instructors we also need to be cautious and know our boundaries! I don't just mean protecting ourselves from students who may want a lot of time and energy.

I am talking about Massage Instructors who use their power over their students.

Students look up to us. Many admire us for the spiritual path we have chosen and want to emulate our life styles. Often they can be in awe of their instructors.

Some Instructors may realize that this can happen with their students and make a VERY conscious effort to be humble and guide their students carefully.

Some Instructors, I feel might take advantage of certain situations.
Yes, it is true. I know this first hand from experience as a student and from testimonies from other students and colleagues.

If you have an instructor who manipulates their power to take advantage of you in ANY way - please take charge of your life and put a stop to this! If it continues, please report them to the necessary authorities.

What am I talking about here? I am talking about instructors that have violated the physical boundaries of students. This is unfortunate and sometimes happens willingly or unwillingly. This is not appropriate.

Just because a student is of age (18 or over) does not mean anyone should take advantage of a gentle and fragile soul seeking love, affection and guidance. It also does not mean that a student has to allow an instructor to inappropriately touch them in anyway!!

Today, I heard a story from a colleague of an inappropriate situation that happened. I wasn't shocked actually to hear of this behavior, but surprised that the person was so blatantly inappropriate in public. I was happy to hear that this person was removed from the environment where a workshop was taking place, mainly because one woman stood up for her rights!

So boundaries are important in every single aspect of our life and our careers.

Students, please, never allow any person in authority take advantage of you in an inappropriate manner. Be confident, know your own boundaries, talk to colleagues when necessary for assistance and take matters to a higher authority if you need help.

Massage is a fabulous career path! It allows for us to touch lives and be touched in a way that enhances our life forever. To touch another is a privilege!
To teach is to effect and change a life forever! Use both gifts wisely.

Well, I am here to tell you that it is a valuable source in many ways when you find the right one(s)!

This past weekend I was a participant and Presenter at the American Massage Conference!
What did I LOVE about this event?

With 25 years in the industry I have gone to many - so let me tell you first what I don't like about some conventions!

1. The price or expenses can often be too high for the average massage therapist budget
2. The exhibit halls can be overwhelming with not enough time to even browse, let alone spend any time with the vendors to really find out about their products
3. The presenters ....well - just not satisfying at times. Sometimes TOO many so you don't get to sample some classes you may be interested in learning about
4. Disorganized :(

Why the AMC?

1. VERY WELL ORGANIZED ~ Great Staff and Volunteers!
2. Priced Right!
3. Great Presentations and loads of FREE mini classes to sample too
4. FRIENDLY and positive atmosphere!
5. Just the "right" amount of vendors so you can actually experience their products and talk to them. You can find "new" products that are really awesome and visit the classic product lines, get to know their staff and get samples too!
6. EASY to get around. You didn't get LOST at this convention. Everything was convenient and you constantly got to pass your friends, colleagues, FaceBook friends and meet new ones!
7. The energy was HIGH! NO complaints here ~ Vendors, presenters, students etc., were all HAPPY!
8. Gala event - Nice awards to honor individuals, Music and Dancing and FUN
9. People genuinely wanted to meet you , get to know you and take pictures with you too ;)
10. Appreciation and gratitude from everyone

Who was there teaching? OMG! So many - here's a few

Our Friendly Massage Nerd, Ryan Hoyme did LIVE interviews (I helped too) :)

They even had a Student Day - many sponsors (including me aka Massage Pro C.E.) gave tons of samples to the students who attended! WOW! Full size products too!

So why was this so valuable to me?

To promote your business you need to NETWORK! This was the place! It is important to learn everything you can and share too! Community supports you and this is very necessary in our business of service.

People LOVED meeting everyone. It was a valuable resource for all.

Oh did I mention Thousands of dollars of prizes were given away too? ;)

If you missed out, another event is planned next year in San Diego, Calif. Check it out! I hope to be there too!

Off to my next destination to teach Lomilomi

How many really understand the commitment and the depth of this path?

In a recent meditation, I was hearing messages from the ancestors guiding us and asking us to Be Responsible and Be Accountable!

They were clear in asking "Do you truly understand your gifts"?

The healing path often takes us on a journey to self discovery. We learn about compassionate touch and non-judgment. We open to receiving as well as giving.

During this time on our planet we must pay attention and realize we are being called upon on a deeper level to heal the inner and outer components of our life.

We are being asked to Listen to our hearts, the truth and Spirit!

It is a time to teach and to grow, heal and love. The Time is Now they advise strongly.

Open your heart, not only your hands. Live a life devoted to the path of healing so that others may be "touched" by you in more ways than physical.

A career in massage is rewarding beyond words. It is an honor and a privilege to touch another life.
Do you tell them what type of water is best and why?

Did you know that not all waters are equal? Some are not only loaded
with chlorine, fluoride and other unnecessary high mineral counts and toxins, but may be VERY low in pH.

Our body must maintain the pH of our blood at 7.36 for homeostasis.
If not health problems arise and not just in the gut!

With the modern diet being very deficient in nutrients, it is very important to
be aware of what we are putting into our bodies. Acid environments cause problems like bacteria, fungi, yeast and make it easier for cancers to develop too.

Many Americans are actually dehydrated too! Our cells can't assimilate nutrients or remove the waste (you tell your clients about).

Complications of dehydration have shown an individual may have problems with obesity, high cholesterol, arterial disease, heartburn, constipation, skin disorders, fibromyalgia, pain and cancer and even fatigue , the list goes on.

Bottled waters are not all created equal either and those plastic bottles emit toxic gases, especially when you leave them in your car.

So, before you tell your client to drink plenty of water, make sure it is a good drinking water!!

I owned a health food store several years ago and was quite surprised to find out the LOW pH content of many bottled waters. Fiji water and other artesian waters are usually around 7.0, but you still have to deal with those plastic bottles.
Then, think about the cost of bottled water? How much do you spend on bottled water yearly?

Interested in obtaining a water filtration system that will balance your pH and give FREE water to your clients! If they are interested in the system you can have a little side business for yourself. You won't even have to sell it, just educate and let them fill up their jugs for FREE! They will feel the difference in 30 days or less.

Now, those of you who know me - I DON'T SELL STUFF. I only endorse things I BELIEVE in. I believe in the Kangen water system.

I just met with a colleague of mine who is a doctor and he said his patients are coming off medications too and feeling great! WOW!!!
Thoughts keep spinning and chatter is flowing?

Today, I arrived at Elements Spa in Brevard, NC to be greeted graciously and treated divinely. A soothing environment with a natural tone, they immediately served me with some warm ginger tea on this chilly day.

The room was soothing and lit softly. The energy of the space felt peaceful and the therapist was professional, caring and knowledgeable. I appreciated the calming effect she had in her voice and her attention to every detail.

Shirodhara has been a favorite treatment of mine, since I first experienced it on Kauai nearly 12 years ago. It allows me to go into a deep meditative place, where time does not exist and I can relax so profoundly I can drift off on a journey of my own bliss.

I found an article in Massage Magazine that describes this ancient method.

Shirodhara: Heavenly Head Massage
By Naomi Serviss from Massage Magazine

Shirodhara, an element of Ayurvedic medicine, has been used for 5,000 years in India but has only recently been "discovered" by Western massage therapists eager to expand their knowledge and client base. Fittingly, shirodhara today combines ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern health-and-beauty techniques in a winning spa combination.

The word shirodhara breaks down into two ideas: “shiro,” meaning head, and “dhara,” which means flow. Together they form a concept that aims to bring physical and emotional balance by rejuvenating the spirit and preserving health. This is achieved through a relaxing technique in which warmed oil is poured over a client’s forehead, followed by head and shoulder massage and a warming body wrap to seal in moisture.

So, if you need a mental break, experience Shirodhara~ Blessings, Gloria

First, I want to thank all the members involved in creating the World Massage Conference! You have definitely proved to me that this event is worthwhile for everyone!

This conference happens twice a year in the convenience of your home/office.
For $97.00 you have access to many awesome presentations from instructors in the field of massage. You get to replay the lectures if you want to watch them again for 6 months!

Another wonderful aspect of the conference which I really enjoyed was meeting Massage Therapists from around the world in the chat room. We got to ask each other questions, share our knowledge and have some fun. Many of us are now friends on FaceBook too.

I did not get to watch all the presentations over the course of the two days, but I will surely do so when it is convenient for me. How awesome is that?
You can even get CE credits if needed for a small additional fee.

So if you are looking for convenience, affordability, quality topics that will open doorways to new modalities and FUN, this is the venue.

Visit www.worldmassageconference.com.

So what and who presented at this conference?

Also, Ben Benjamin, Cherie Sohnen Moe, Angie Patrick, Laura Allen, Stephanie Beck, Tina Allen, Julie Onoforio, Bruce Baltz, Whitney Lowe, Erik Dalton, Thomas Meyers and so many more individuals were featured presenters!

Right now I am finishing up review with my students and in 2 weeks they will have completed 8 months of massage training.

Remember the day you started? Excited to embark upon a new career! Maybe a bit nervous of going back to school and wondering where all this will lead you.

Anatomy and Physiology class begins and you had no idea massage school was going to be so intensive. You ask yourself "Am I going to be able to remember over 600 muscles and their function"?

Time quickly flies by and you are completing your Swedish massage hands on techniques and it feels really good both to give and receive.

Along the way your emotions are riding the roller coaster of healing and transformation. Who Knew?

You learn deep tissue techniques. You find out quickly that each person that says they like deep, just never seems to be the correct pressure. What's that about you say?

The time is near and review has started and the butterflies twirl in your stomach as you prepare for your final exams and board exams. So much to remember.

You never imagined you would actually understand how blood gets oxygenated and who knew there was so much about energy therapy that applies to massage. Maybe you thought it was woo woo or discounted its validity, but wow something is definitely happening when you touch a body!

You wonder where life will lead you and if you will be successful.
Where shall you work, what environment or private practice?
What continuing education classes do you want to attend in the future. So much more to learn, you think.

A career in massage is the most amazing adventure you could have taken in your life. You have blossomed and transformed and learned so much about yourself and others. This will never leave you.

You will have the opportunity to help others and literally TOUCH THE WORLD!
You will meet amazing colleagues along the way who support you for exactly who you are. Yes, that's right! We are out here :)

So this gift is not only for my students but all the massage students out there.

LOVE what you do and the rest will flow. Truly it will!

Take care of yourself first or you can't take care of another fully.

Live in your heart and spread compassion.

Breathe life and love into every touch you provide to another.

Always honor the temple that our creator gave to us, for it is truly a "Gift" for you to touch another.

I know if you live in your truth and love what you do you will always have success!!

I hope to see you all in a continuing education class in the future too. :)

Many blessings on your healing journey
Congratulations on a job well done!
Beautiful radiant beams of light and joy now touch the universe!

Yesterday, I had an appointment scheduled for myself to receive a steam, salt scrub and lomi session at Aunty Angeline's. I have been here before and love the energy and spirit of Aloha that is present in this amazing space created by this wonderful woman.

While I had not met Aunty yet on my previous visits, I had hoped that this time I would be able to spend some time with her if she was well enough for a visit.

As I was driving to my appointment, I suddenly realized that I gone further than I thought. So, I turned around to find the street I was supposed to turn on. Interestingly and curiously I could not find it. So I turned around again and again and yes, again. It mysteriously disappeared.

I was concerned about being late for my appointment, since I always like to arrive early. It was now five minute pass my appointment time.

I called and left a message that I was not able to locate the street but would be there soon.

I recalled that the street was at the base of Sleeping Giant mountain. So, I thought, I will find the mountain. Mysteriously it has also disappeared through thick cloud coverings.

Now almost 15 minutes late and concerned, I paused. I thought "Why am I unable to locate the street"? In that silent moment and with a deep breath, I surrendered. Within moments the street appeared.

I arrived at Aunty's and was graciously welcomed into this sacred sanctuary. Guided to the steam hut, I prepared for my treatment.

I had a sense I should pray for Aunty Angeline and so I did. In moments a young woman was escorting an older hawaiian woman who was having difficulty walking. She assisted her into the steam hut and onto the massage table. She lay there in front of me and I could sense an amazing yet gentle power. I listened to her silently pray in hawaiian as I also prayed.

Soon another woman entered the steam hut and she was my lomi massage practitioner who guided me on the table beside the lovely hawaiian kupuna. Together, the two lomi practitioners chanted and blessed our bodies and they applied the hawaiian salts to us.

After we were escorted to the shower. I introduced to myself to the lovely hawaiian lady and it was then that she told me she was Aunty Angeline.

Wow! I realized in that split second that had I arrived on time, I would have never been graced with the presence to be blessed together in the steam hut, nor would I have had the opportunity to speak with her privately.

Spirit divinely detained me in order for this sacred space to be created. That is the magic of the Aloha Spirit.

Aunty looked deeply into my eyes, held my hand and said "It is Time" ~ the same words I heard from the goddess Pele months previously.

She continued to say that we give so much as practitioners in the healing arts and that we have all waited too long to give back to ourselves. It is time she repeated, gently embracing me and kissing me on the lips.

For the following hour we both received our lomi sessions ~ sharing the same healing energy ~ yet another gift for me.

Later, as I rested on the porch embracing all I could to savor the moment, the kapuna began to arrive. I was invited to stay for Kupuna (Elders) Day. Soon, Aunty came back out in a lovely periwinkle dress and all aglow and smiling. Others arrived with food and ukelele's.

They shared stories and music and laughter. Yes, I was divinely guided to share in this sacred time.

Thank you spirit for having me arrive "just in time"

There is no doubt in my mind, that when we let go and surrender, all will happen just as it is meant to for our highest good and best interest.

Otherwise, Give up going to massage school if you are in it for the Money Only!

Massage School Requires:

1. A Commitment!!!
Do you have any idea of how many dedicated hours of study you will need?

You have to learn a whole new language. Anatomy and Physiology. You need to name the muscles, locate them and know the function of all the muscles. Next, you will have to know how the nervous system, lymph , circulatory etc., all interact with each other to make our body functions.

Now, you will be learning hands on techniques and by the end of the training it would be hopeful that you understand how the techniques and systems work together.

I am not trying to discourage you from going to massage school. I am informing you all of what is involved.

Why?

For years I hear students say:
"Wow, I had no idea there was so much work"
"OMG, this is stressful. Someone should have told me there was so much to learn"
"I am so stressed. I can't manage the workload and my life, job etc."

These are just a few of the comments.

Massage School is not playtime and all feel good.

This is serious stuff. You are entering a health care profession. It is more than a back rub.

2. Practice Time

In addition to the time in school, you will only become proficient in your hands on techniques if you have time (and people) to practice on at home. People? Yes, friends and family that are willing to give you the time and 'show up'.

Don't expect to master everything in school. It will most likely take you at least another year out of school to continue to master your new tools.

3. Home Work

Yes, instructors give you homework.
Reading assignments, research projects, case studies, etc.

You might need anywhere from 4-10 hours of time weekly.

4. Accelerated Learning

If you are taking a training less than 1 year and it is approximately 600 hrs or so. It is an accelerated program. That means you better be ready for a whirlwind!

I would suggest if you don't enjoy stress, find a program that gives you more time to learn, study and practice.

I would also suggest if you commit to a shorter program that you don't work full time. Even part time employment has demonstrated to increase the stress load of students.

5. Emotions

Be prepared for emotions to come up. Touch evokes many emotions. Yes, that is right. I have not been in a training yet that does manifest emotions.

Think about it - you will be receiving touch several times a week. Has anyone ever given you that much touch on a regular basis for months?

If not, you might find yourself getting emotional.

If you have not been touched in a healthy manner in your life, you might find emotions coming up.

Classmates, be prepared to support your fellow students instead of judging them.
You will share an intimate space for many months!

6. Curriculum

Depending on how the massage program is set up, you will find most schools have courses set up so you are learning 2, 3 or 4 topics at one time. Similar to a college load.

Be prepared to have a lot of information coming in at one time.
For example:

Anatomy and Physiology may be daily or 2-3 /week
Massage Theory and Hands on Techniques 2-3/week
Other Modalities like Somatic Psychology, Ethics, Asian Theory, Hydrotherapy etc., will be filling up the other day of the week alternating class topics.

7. Be Prepared!

Prepare yourself for this instead of finding out later and expressing you can't handle it.

If you can't function at this level, find a school that is part time and takes a year or more to train you.

If you think you can function at an accelerated pace, make sure you have time in your schedule for what you need too!

If you are not sure - better talk to people who went through massage school and massage instructors so they can help you before you register.

8. Successful Careers

Of course we all want to be successful! Remember there is more than massage to make you successful! You need to have business savvy. Whether you work for someone else or in private practice you are ALWAYS marketing and selling yourself. Be prepared to know this BEFORE you get out of school.

Make sure your program offers a detailed business portion to help you prepare.

I hear from students all over the Nation asking what do I do now? How do I get started? Where do I promote myself?

These are things I would hope your massage program offers guidance in throughout your training.

9. Get Massage

What? You say you never had a massage? Why, I ask, would you want to give if you don't know what it feels like to receive?

PLEASE go get several massages before you register for class.

Did you know you have to remove some clothing in order to exchange massage in class?
Yep!! No one told you in admissions? Shame on them.

10. Listen to your instructors

We aren't here just because it is a job. (At least I hope not). We are here because we have experience and passion for an amazing profession.

When we try to assist and help you from body mechanics to study skills etc., it is because we care! We want you to be successful.

I am shocked to hear that instructors get attitude from students.
I have been told by instructors that students will say things like:
1. I don't have to listen to you. (Ummm, isn't this what we probably have said to our parents? Grow up)
2. Professional? Dude, I am professional.
3. I don't need to do any practice. I am awesome. What would you know, you just teach, looser.
4. I have no time to do anything else. You have got to be kidding you want me to study?
5. Get out of my face and off my back.
6. Meet me outside so I can kick your A____.

Yes, truly, I am not kidding. The Lack of respect for instructors has increased drastically, unfortunately. It is even sad that I have to include this section.

Of course, there are many students that do not present themselves this way and are a pleasure to have in a training.

Students do you realize how much work, effort and preparation goes into helping you learn? Do you have any idea of the amount of hours an instructor gives of their life without pay? Do you really think they come to school to catch your attitude?

Instructors teach because they have passion! They want to share their knowledge!
They want to see you succeed. Do something nice for your instructors!

Be Professional! Learn what it means to be ethical and professional. Success and professionalism go hand in hand. Promoting yourself will be much easier if you are a professional!

Finally - Enjoy this learning process!
Make the best of it! This profession will bring you so many wonderful people in your life! It is rewarding in so many ways.

If you have any questions about massage school, contact me at massageproce@gmail.com

If you are in school or graduated and would like to share any comments, please do so. I was excited to share my new love!

I contacted chiropractors and medical doctors and offered them a free massage too!

I went to senior citizen community centers and offered free lectures and made them fun! They loved it!

I would even volunteer at nursing facilities and offer mini massage to the patients.

Writing articles for many of the local community newspapers and magazines about all types of massage and their benefits was another way to spread the word.

I also made sure that if my client was under the care of a physician, I would send them a medical report about the care and treatment I was providing for their patient. Soon, I was getting referrals from the MD's and chiropractors. I must say this was an excellent way to get noticed as a massage professional!

Next, I printed up brochures not only on techniques. I found that brochures that related to "CONDITIONS" were much more effective. When clients were waiting for their appointment they related to a symptom on the brochure, picked it up, read it and started asking more questions about styles of massage that might help them.

Occasionally, I offered Free seminars at my facility for the public to learn about holistic health care. I invited other practitioners as well to share their modality. It was a win-win for us all. It was a great way to network for us all!

Joining Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Business Networking etc., is a great way to get known and talk about what you do!

There are so many ways to educate our community. These are just a few I have done.
How do you get the word out? What innovative ideas have you come up with to help
spread the word about massage?

Let's share our ideas and experiences

Do you Still Love what you do?

Ask yourself? Why do you want to touch bodies?

Seriously, take the time to answer that question.
I would be curious to know your response and would love
for you to comment below or send me an email at massageproce@gmail.com

When was the last time you took a training that made you feel
good about your work and about yourself?

All too often, I hear stories shared from massage therapists on how
they are stuck in the same old patterns. I am surprised to hear many don't receive
regular massage for themselves. One of the saddening factors I often hear is how
many are not really happy and they don't nurture themselves.

Massage Therapists I ask you to re-evalute yourself and your career choice!

1. What do you do to nurture yourself on a regular basis? How much time do you allow?
2. What obstacles are in your life blocking you from succeeding?
3. What tools or methods do you use to get yourself on track?

If you are already having difficulty responding to these questions, perhaps it is
time to find the person or workshop that will help guide you.

When you chose to enter a field in the healing arts, it meant that you would also
choose to heal yourself. How can you provide a service to a client/guest effectively, that you
have difficulty providing for yourself?

I often speak with massage students and practitioners across the nation. Most are struggling
along in life. Many are not satisfied. Many are disappointed they are not more successful. Most
have lost the inspiration that may have brought them to this field.

I have been in the healing arts profession for almost 25 years. There has not been many days
that I don't feel good about my choices. I did take a sabbatical for 2 years about mid way in my career.
During that time I found new ways to nurture myself. I reconnected with nature which is so vital to
our health and well being. I experienced new things in my life that provided me a newer sense of self.
I met new people, explored new places! I took the TIME to heal!

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOURSELF LATELY?

Next, I find that many therapists do not take continuing education, unless they are required too?
Why is that?

Do you not want to learn as much as you can about the human body? Do you not want to
provide other services for your clients?

I have always been inspired by taking new classes. Fresh out of massage school I signed up for a myofascial release course with John Barnes. I was not in a licensed state at the time and CE classes were not required. I just wanted to soak up everything I could. Soon, thereafter I found myself taking Infant Massage, Aromatherapy, Facial Massage, Neuromuscular therapy and so on. Within 2 years I had an additional 100 hrs. of CE trainings under my belt. I was excited. My mind and my heart were being fed!

I was so engrossed in studying cranio sacral therapy for many years that I even became a teaching assistant at the Upledger Institute just so I could learn more from every instructor. Each time I repeated those classes another 'link' to this amazing work was provided.

I also took classes on spirituality and self help. Self hypnosis techniques were amazing, studies on the chakra's or spiritual philosophies. WOW! I was opening to a whole new world of motivational techniques, inspiration, curiosity and ancient wisdom!

What Inspires You?

I get inspired every time I teach a class! I get inspired every time a client tells me how a new technique really did help them! I get inspired when I pick vegetables out of my garden. I get inspired when I sit with my grandchildren and watch their amazement of life and creativity!

Many therapists want to keep learning techniques....more techniques....and yet more!

What have you learned about 'healing'? There is more to helping your clients than techniques.
There is more to know and understand about the body's ability to heal.

If you did not come from a massage school who exposed you to those ideas and theories you may
not realize the potential for healing.

Maybe you are burnt out?

SIGNS OF BURNOUT
1. Not feeling fulfilled by your life/work
2. Tired and/or depressed
3. Lack of motivation
4. Lack of inspiration
5. Stuck in patterns
6. Struggling in your career
7. Hurting physically
8. Feeling overworked
9. Not sleeping well
10. Emotionally exhausted
11. Energetically drained
12. Bored
13. Not wanting to see clients
14. Not being aware and spacing out while providing a massage treatment

and more......

How many of these have you answered?

Massage Therapists I invite you to get Inspired!

Take a walk in nature and feel the energy of our mother earth
Breathe Deeply and imagine you have roots going into the soil, down deep into our earth
Breathe and feel the pulsation or rhythm of life. Bring that into your being!

Go have some fun! Laugh, Dance, Explore!
Learn something new about yourself!
Learn something new about someone else!

Get a massage! Maybe 2 or 3 this month!

Go Experience a new concept or idea. Do something you have
never done before! Belly Dancing, Drumming, Singing, Studying something new and out
of your regular belief system.

Take a class you have always thought about attending. JUST DO IT!
No excuses, no waiting. Immerse yourself in the class. Participate!
Ask questions, Experience and share!

DISCOVER LIVING!

Share what you learn with others.
Create a group to share ideas, concepts, new techniques.
Learn from each other. Motivate each other.

Never give up! Find a new way. LISTEN AND OBSERVE.
The answers are there for you if you pay attention.

As a massage instructor, I love the gleam in the eyes of new students when they embark upon
this career path. I love their enthusiasm to learn. When a student desires more I love being
their mentor and sharing all that has been shared with me.

When there are challenges, I am here for those that want someone to listen.
When there is joy, I love sharing that with you.

As a continuing education provider I love seeing the responses at the end of
a training when an LMT is re-inspired! It continues to inspire me to provide
the support and education LMT's are seeking.

If you are struggling, reach out.
If you are not sure what to do next, reach out.

Massage Therapy is an amazing journey for us all. Let it change your life and Inspire you!

Blessings on your journey ~ Gloria

Need a class to inspire you?
www.MassageProCE.com

Other recommendations!

Massage Cupping by Anita Shannon
Anterior Structural Balancing - Elan Schacter
Acupressure with Aminah Raheem
Infant Massage
Cranio Sacral - Upledger Institute
Chakra's - Anodea Judith, PhD

Do you have a class to suggest?
List below. Now we are so blessed to have so many using their writing talents to share their research, knowledge and passion.

Thank you all for your gifts and contributions! You make life easier for all the instructors and massage therapists that have the privilege to hear about your contributions.

I would also like to thank Ryan Hoyme the Massage Nerd who has contributed so many videos for massage students! He has helped thousands study for their licensing exams and continues to support the entire massage community!

You can also view some of the video clips I have been making at www.massagenetworknews.com . I also recently released a Lomi Video ~ Past, Present, Future co-produced with Ryan Hoyme. I hope to making more educational videos in the near future.

Gratitude to all from the massage therapy field!

To reduce your stress find out all the details now. Learn where the testing location is and how to get there before the day of the exam.

Most students want to know what to study? My question: Have you been studying all
along? If you have been keeping up with your reading assignments, reviewing the questions at the end of your chapters and passing your exams at school; the odds are that you will do well.

Hints:
1. Memorize, yes memorize and UNDERSTAND all the key terms. Those are the ones in bold or italics in your books. It is VERY important to understand the meanings so that you can apply them to a variety of type of questions. If you don't understand a term, PLEASE have your instructor or a classmate help you to understand. Without that piece it will be difficult for you to answer any questions that require you to take the term and relate it to application etc.

2. Review and know your major muscle groups. You should know what the actions are for example of your quadriceps group, hamstrings, flexors, extensors, adductors, etc.

3. Understand how to briefly describe every system in the body. Which muscle is involved in respiration? Where is the superior vena cava located? How does blood get oxygenated? These are a few samples of the types of information you should know.

4. Take time to relax, get a massage and have some fun. If you spend too much time in the books you will get overloaded. Manage your time and your stress.

5. Make a schedule for yourself. Spend an hour a night perhaps reviewing your material. Don't wait until the last minute to cram everything. Take the text soon after you graduate, so everything is fresh in your head.

6. Make post it notes with a new term to memorize daily. Increase it to 2 or 3 once it becomes easier.

7. Get a study buddy. It's easier and more fun to study with someone.
My friend and I used to get washable markers and draw the muscles on each other.
a. One would draw the muscle
b. The other person (by feeling it) had to name the muscle and it's function.

8. Review your ethical situations. The MBLex gives more questions on Ethics FYI

9. Do you know the proper stances? What about positioning and bolstering? Review those chapters too.

10. Business questions are also on the exam. For example do you know the difference between being a sub contractor or employee? Do you know what tax forms get filled out if you are self employed?

So prepare now! Have all your information ready. Arrive early for your exam so you are relaxed and not rushed. Think Positive!

Need more help?

I offer an online massage review that helps explain the type of questions and how to read them. As a massage therapist and cranio sacral therapist this new item is so much more comfortable than other varieties I have tried in the past. Barb Richmond has created this item for self and home care. Give it a try!

Great CE Classes:
Have you ever tried massage cupping? Anita Shannon from ACE Cupping offers a great class. I recently attended and had the opportunity to work alongside a woman who had a previous masectomy. This new tool/technique was amazing. The tissue in the rib cage softened and allowed for more freedom and movement. The woman expressed no referred pain she had been having for years in her feet. So many great benefits. Give it a try!

New Video
Lomi - The Rhythm of the Heart - Past ~ Present ~ Future
This video gives a history of Lomi and explains the roots and culture of this hawaiian form of massage. Exclusive interviews with several kumu's too! Enjoy a few clips on techniques and gain a better understanding of what lomilomi is.....more than technique! www.lomilomimassagece.com

Z Coil Shoes
You stand on your feet all day giving massage and maybe your body is hurting at the end of the week? Knee pain, feet hurt, back pain? Try EZ Coil shoes. Amazing! I had the opportunity to wear them for a day at the FSMTA and yes, I bought a pair. You will love them - they feel wonderful!

Free Massage Resources
If you haven't discovered the Massage Nerd, now is the time. Ryan Hoyme is the creator and producer of www.massagenerd.com and a YouTube station that provides hundreds (maybe thousands) of video clips on massage techniques, A&P, products and more. The Massage Nerd Rocks! He is here to help students with the resources they need. Check out www.massagenerd.com today!

Massage Creams etc.
Bon Vital has some great shea butter...LOVE IT! Try some of their new spa salts too. Yummy!
Biotone came out with a new hydrating spa wrap and easy to use without a shower.

Massage Warehouse is awesome! Angie Patrick is amazing. She has given away so many prizes at every convention and organizes the Sanctuary - a place to receive a mini massage and all proceeds get donated to research! This year at the FSMTA they raised $$$$$ loads of money that was presented to TIffany Fields of the Touch Research Institute! You gotta support a business that gives back to so much!

So much more I could go on and on! Check out your massage publications to find out what is new! Support the people listed here too. They are all great and give back so much to the industry!

Looking for something? Ask me, maybe I can direct you to the resource.
Thanks for joining me today!
