At the same time as their triumphant and memorable concert with Motorpsycho in London in November 2010 they popped into BBC for a session for their Somethin Else series. Widely considered to be one of Norway´s best live bands, this album also shows the high degree of musicianship in this trio, all tracks being first takes and without any editing whatsoever. Elephant9 is as always Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush) on Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, Nikolai Eilertsen (Big Bang) on bass and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums. Look out for a new studio album with Dungen guitarist Reine Fiske in the summer.

Classic double live album from this free spirited international trio, this time expanded with Chicago sax player Mars Williams. Recorded at Oslo´s Café Mono and at the Nattjazz festival in Bergen, both in May 2011, this fully shows how new drummer Frank Rosaly now is a perfect partner to founders Raoul Björkenheim (guitar) and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass), not to mention Williams who fits in perfectly with only a minimum of rehearsals before these concerts. The interplay is simply stunning and the sound is of studio quality.

Fire! are developing at a rapid speed and their exhilirating gig at Oslo Jazz Festival in August simply left the audience gobsmacked. This 10” EP however, contains more music from their fruitful collaboration with Jim O´Rourke in Tokyo in September 2010, some of which was released earlier this year as "Unreleased?". Here are two workouts showing the wide musical spectrum they cover.

Newcomers The Last Hurrah!! was a pleasant surprise with their much acclaimed debut album "Spiritual Non-Believers" earlier this year. On the back of this UK music mag Mojo invited them to cover a track from Pink Floyd´s "The Dark Side Of The Moon" for their September issue. Their sublime take on the most iconic and uncoverable of Floyd tracks, "The Great Gig In The Sky", had readers and journalists naming it the outstanding contribution to the project. Here it is in all its glory together with their interpretation of another classic, Sandy Denny´s "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" and two smashing new originals penned by Hurrah mainman HP Gundersen.

Features interviews with label founder Elijah and a host of top draw names including Terror Danjah, Skilliam, and Royal-T. A fantastic introduction to the philosophies and culture of the Butterz team.

In recent months, their tracks have been spreading like wildfire around a tight circle of DJs and writers … Mary Anne Hobbs has been playing them on a weekly basis, other avowed supporters include Loefah, 2562, Boddika, Douster, Ikonika, and Jakes, and they already have two more 12”s lined up for Saigon and Numbers.

In short, Goldffinch are building a serious heatwave. Main track ‘Dirty Bird’ sums up a vision of dancefloor friendly electronic music that doesn’t disconnect the brain, but is still fully tooled for soundsystem pressure, with clean and focused production values blending minimal tools through an awkward wooze with the kind of precision that characterises the work of the aforementioned selectors who are – uh – selecting it. Hinting at the wildest abandon of Ghetto-Tech or Miami Bass, it still keeps the elegant feel and original touch that remains the trademark of great producers. Expect 808 mastery, vocals chops, and unreal subs served with a groove the crowd won’t be able to resist.

Flip it and you get a techno-driven version of the bass sound in the form of ‘Burned Bit’, the kind of track that mixes well in any situation where the order is to dance. Made of the same ingredients as ‘Dirty Bird’ but showcasing some more subtle sequencing and arranging, ‘Burned Bit’ is more likely to take people by surprise, bringing them to an unexpected yet wild bass music trance.

The second track on the flip is an excitement-filled remix of ‘Dirty Bird’ by Lyon producer Jay Weed, who is building a name on his spacey, living and mutating sound.

Another week, more brilliant Throbbing Gristle releases. This week it's the turn of the seminal 20 Jazz Funk Greats, Heathen Earth:The Live Sound of Throbbing Gristle and Throbbing Gristle's Greatest Hits. This completes the 5 LP run of reissues on Industrial Records.

20 Jazz Funk Greats is the fourth re-release on Throbbing Gristle's orginial record label, Industrial Records, and like the other reissues is limitied to 2000 pressings. Each of the CD special-editions are presented in a gatefold sleeve featuring restored and remastered cover artworks and an integrated 8-page booklet which features different artwork and content to the vinyl editions. While the CD releases feature the same track count and running order as the vinyl editions each CD special-edition also includes an exclusive bonus CD containing content from the year of the albums original release. This additional content includes TG live tracks and remastered singles.

Heathen Earth was recorded between 1979 and 1980. The majority of the track were laid down specifically on the 16th of Feburary 1980 if your that interested! This now 2 disc LP will be packaged with an equal amount of visual ephemera and infomation on the tracks recorded as all the other recent TG output.

Throbbing Gristle's Greatest Hits brings all the best bits of Gristle together in one delicious compliation for your declication. Featuring releases from the whole TG carreer, it was originally released in 1980 and was subtitled Entertainment through pain. Dark. This release also has plenty of art and info packaged with it.

Interestingly, Throbbing Gristle and Industrial records have brought all the old stock of thier previous releases on Mute Records and EMI so they once again have full control of their artist output, the reason they started Industrial Records in the first place.

The Return Of Throbbing Gristle on Industrial

For the first time in 30 years Throbbing Gristle are now back on their own original Industrial Records label!

To mark the occasion we are pleased to announce the re-release of TG's first five albums on vinyl & CD. Each album has been restored and remastered specifically for each format by Chris Carter from 24bit 'baked tape' digital transfers of the original first generation analogue master tapes. Vinyl - The newly cut 180-gram vinyl editions include painstakingly restored cover artworks, using original source material from the Industrial Records visual archive.

In addition each of the vinyl releases include an exclusive large format 8-page colour booklet featuring an abundance of Throbbing Gristle archival material, including some previously unpublished photos of the band. Each vinyl release is limited to 2000 copies.

Each of the CD special-editions are presented in a gatefold sleeve featuring restored and remastered cover artworks and an integrated 8-page booklet that is more than likely, as Altered Zones points out, to feature thier trademark 'anti-commercial, propagandistic, and frequently controversial iconography'. The CD's will also feature a special bonus disc as well as all the original material.

Most of the TG back catalogue will be coming out thick and fast over the next few weeks, all of which will be available on the Cargo website.

The Dead Skeletons - Dead Magick

What is a “dead skeleton”? What is Dead Magick? Can either entity exist? Is this a band of Sonic wizards? Undead alternative warlocks Chanting mantras and ensnaring listeners? Well... A bit actually, yes!

The Dead Skeletons are Jón Sæmundur, Henrik Björnsson and Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt from Reykjavik. These boys are joined by the ever loathed/loved Brian Johnstown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe and will imminently release there first LP "Dead Magick" on A Recordings next month, an LP that is far from dead but is certainly infused with some kind of magical allure.

The lyrics often break down into looping mantras, the guitar riffs and organ swells do the same and the whole lot is wrapped up in so much fuzz and reverb that it kind of mixes together creating a phychadelic noise potion that is hard not to get sucked into.

Hard, even, for such stalwarts for the trade as Alan Magee whose article for The Guardian professes real love for this new 4 piece. He draws attention to the video for album opener "Death Mantra", a video which does a very good job of summing up visually what "Dead Magick" is all about.

Dead Magick is accessible on a song-by-song basis, as each is a world unto itself but also comes together as an album and as part of the bands grand life-on-the-edge-of-death concept very well. It really is above and beyond the genres of shoegaze/psyche/noise that it will be undoubtedly bracketed under and needless to say worth a listen! To entice you further, we are currently offering the spanking new double vinyl with The Dead Skeletons release from last year, "Dead Mantra" on 10", for a low low price. Amazing!!

Fortuna POP! is turning 15 years old this year and to celebrate not only are they putting on a string of quality gigs but we here at cargo are having a massive sale on many thier releases.
Fortuna started out in North London staging gig nights in the surrounding area and then eventually started putting out indie pop releases. Over the last 15 years thier empire has grown and grown. Now they represent perennial darlings like The Primitives and some of the biggest underground bands of the last few years such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Crystal Stilts.

Tomutonttu is the alias of Finland’s Jan Anderzén, perhaps better known as a member of the Finnish psych-folk act Kemialliset Ystävät.

As Tomutonttu, however, all semblance of traditional instrumentation has been melted away and perhaps even placed in an aural blender. Yet this is not surprising for a well-known member of the Finnish experimental/noise scene, which brings to mind the work of Kuupuu, Islaja, and Lau Nau. But unlike the more delicate and folk-tinged sound of these bands, Anderzén’s solo work evokes the aural equivalent of abstract oil painting. Thick, blotchy streaks of sound loop and layer upon one another until they have become lost in the weight of the composition.

The self-titled album Tomutonttu, as well as the terribly confusingly-named Tomutonto are actually two CD reissues of LPs released in 2007. Recently released on Fonal Records, these two albums provide more than an hour of dense sonic dementia. Tomutonttu serves as a superb introduction to Anderzén’s work, going frenetically from bleep/bloopy disorientation to fucked-up analog disarray. To some it may sound like a psyclobin romp through a toy store and to others perhaps a shamanic experience into a primeval Urwald.

Finally repressed after many many months on Sounds Familyre! Sufjan Stevens- “Seven Swans” LP + 7” (“I Went Dancing With My Sister” / “Waste Of What Your Kids Won’t Have”).

"When thinking about re-issuing the vinyl version of “Seven Swans,” Sufjan and I decided to look back at some of the unmixed tracks that didn’t make the cut for the record. I went back to the 1/4” 8 track tapes and made rough mixes of these recordings to play for Sufjan. “Seven Swans” was actually recorded before “Michigan”, so we had an early version of “Romulus” that Sufjan had decided didn’t work with the album. Also we had a song “Borderline” which ended up on a Rough Trade 7”.

The two remaining songs, “I Went Dancing With My Sister” and “Waste Of What Your Kids Won’t Have,” were great fun to hear again. I put bass lines down on them and mixed them up for Sufjan to hear. We liked what we heard, but felt that they still belong separate from the album. So here we are with the vinyl re-issue of “Seven Swans.”

It’s an album that I so proud to have been part of and still enjoy listening to. The vinyl mastering is better, the vinyl is thicker, the cover is matte instead of shiny, and it’s got a bonus 7” of two Sufjan songs from the “Seven Swans” sessions that are not available in any other format. Alpha Steppa, the son and nephew of UK dub heavyweights Alpha & Omega, meets the legendary dubstep producer RSD on this mighty soundclash plate.

The Bristol bass vanguard also known as Rob Smith, of the revered duo Smith And Mighty, has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for over two decades. Since the late 1980s, Smith And Mighty played a huge part in the evolution of UK bass music.

Thanks to their experiments in dub, reggae, drum & bass and beyond, they are widely regarded as an integral part of the pioneering forces in the evolution of dubstep. RSD's current sound is a key element of the dubstep scene which has earned him releases on respected labels including Punch Drunk, Earwax and Tectonic.

Tropics - Mouves [incl. Falty DL & Keep Shelly In Athens remixes]

After last year's popular 'Soft Vision EP', Tropics follows up with this prelude to his debut album, due autumn 2011 on Planet Mu. Since that first release, which garnered press attention worldwide, Tropics as a project has expanded to a full band feel, and this EP features the first recorded fruits of that development, with the artist’s own vocals on 'Mouves' taking the spotlight.

The intense summery shimmer that has been a feature of Tropics' work so far is ever present. With a wavering grace that combines dubby New Order-esque bass, lush jazzy rhodes, shoegazey stretched vocals and droney synths, the song is an unusual but almost overwhelmingly beautiful and woozy combination that floors the listener with its humid atmosphere.

The hotly tipped Keep Shelly In Athens have remixed 'Mouves' by trimming down the track to it's minimal parts, cooling down the atmosphere and adding a heavy Boards Of Canada-like synth melody and chords that sound like they’re borrowed from an early ‘90s ambient trance track, all held together with heavy, cracking grime-like snare.

On the b-side, FaltyDL showcases his first new material for Planet Mu since the highly-acclaimed ‘You Stand Uncertain' LP, with a remix which breaks the parts down into micro-samples and then re-edits and twists them through a subtle bumping beat and bass, as if he’s just taken a microcosm from the original’s wild, tropical macrocosm and studied it in detail.

‘Celebrate’ finishes the EP, feeling like an early, utterly joyful Madonna track, slowed down and extended to it’s limits to capture every second of feeling in rapturous, dusty slow motion.
