Roseau, Dominica – (December 21, 2009) – From February 15-16, 2010, Dominica’s “The Real Mas,” Carnival, unquestionably one of the most festive times on “the Nature Island,” will display the unique folklore and pageantry of Dominica. A jubilant, engaging experience for local residents and visitors alike, Carnival celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the Dominican people through exuberant festivities and events.

Carnival on Dominica is known as one of the Caribbean’s most original Carnivals for displaying a profound and multifaceted artistic expression of pride and storied legacy. Blending elements of African, European and regional influences, “The Real Mas” is a time when Dominicans showcase their folklore and traditions through song, dance, drama, poetry and music in a variety of competitions, performances and street activities.

Dominica’s Carnival also shines for its diverse events showcased throughout these two days. Their traditional Parade kicks off the Carnival festivities. The Queen contestants, Calyponians, Princess Show contestants, the most popular bands, stilt walkers, cheerleaders and many more people saunter through the streets in a kaleidoscope of colors. Additional activities during this period include the National Queen Show, the Junior Calypso Monarch, Carnival Costume Street Parade and a traditional Masquerade competition.

“While there’s always a reason to visit Dominica, our “Real Mas” is by far the most exciting time to visit Dominica and celebrate our Dominican heritage,” comments Colin Piper, Director of Tourism at Discover Dominica Authority. “Visitors will be lured into the spirit of Carnival and will be mesmerized by the vibrant visuals and sounds of the festivities. We encourage travelers to plan now to come here and experience it for themselves.”

Known as “the Nature Island” and located between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean, the independent nation of Dominica (pronounced “dom-in-eek-a”) is the largest and most mountainous of the Windward Islands, encompassing an area of nearly 290 square miles. Of volcanic origins with mountains reaching heights of nearly 5,000 feet, rainforests that are considered among the last true oceanic rainforests in the world, more than 365 rivers, waterfalls the second largest Boiling Lake in the world and pristine coral reefs, Dominica’s natural diversity is truly unique. Dominica is also home to the last remaining settlement of Indigenous People of the Caribbean – The Carib Indians. A place where man and nature live in harmony, adventurers and nature lovers alike will revel in the Island’s eco-tourism options which include scuba diving, snorkeling, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding, nature tours, hiking/trekking, whale, dolphin and bird watching, sailing and fishing.

Dominica continues to be recognized for its attributes and responsible tourism efforts, including being the first country in the world to receive Benchmarking designation from the prestigious eco-tourism organization Green Globe 21. National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destination ranked the island as the top sustainable island in the Caribbean and among the top ten in the world. Dominica was recognized by Islands Magazine and was included in its 2007 Blue List for being a leader in responsible tourism and ensuring an environmentally and culturally sound island for future generations. Most recently, Travel + Leisure announced Dominica as one of the most compelling destinations to visit in their 100 Greatest Trips 2008 edition.

By Greg Bluestein, Associated Press Writer

ROATAN, Honduras — Breathing underwater was a strange sensation. It was even stranger because I've never been scuba-certified. Stranger yet that my wife — who is reluctant to even duck her head under water — was happily swimming 15 feet underwater behind me as we plumbed the depths on this island off the coast of Honduras.

We had discovered Snuba, a hybrid of snorkeling and scuba diving that was an exciting way to experience breathing underwater while not having to go through hardcore training. It has its limitations — namely, a 20-foot airline attached to a raft above — but for a new way to experience watery depths, it can't be beat.

Snuba has been around since at least the late 1980s, when a group of California divers started Snuba International to export the sport. It still isn't offered in many places in the U.S. beyond a few beaches in California, Florida and Hawaii. But it's also caught on in the Caribbean, where tourists go Snuba diving from Aruba to Turks and Caicos. Other destinations include Cancun, Mexico, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

My wife and I tried it in Roatan, Honduras. (The U.S. State Department lifted a travel alert to the country on Dec. 8, five months after a coup there.) Our Snuba experience on this tropical island started with a training session on safety procedures. We were then outfitted with flippers, a weight belt, a mask and a regulator linked to a long, snaking tube. It was all surprisingly light, mostly because the tube is connected to an oxygen tank that rests comfortably on a small raft.

We practiced for a few minutes in shallow water, getting a feel for our newfound ability to breathe underwater and the strange, almost tickling sensation we got when we inhaled.

We were told to try our best to breathe normally, as our oxygen tank only had a 45-minute reservoir of air and gasping can deplete it more quickly. And we were also taught to hold our nose and breathe every few feet so we could equalize our pressure as we plummeted.

The experience itself would be nothing new for certified divers, and probably a little frustrating. But for an avid swimmer like me who has always wanted to get scuba-certified, the ability to skim new depths was exhilarating.

Our guide went with us as we waded deeper into the water. The moment we got there we took advantage, plunging as deep as we could, skimming the tops of coral reefs and tracking the colorful fish darting in and out of our paths.

The water wasn't that deep, so our 20-foot rope never seemed to block us from going deeper. It was also nice to know that even if the hose somehow malfunctioned we were still shallow enough we could make it back to the surface within a few seconds.

There were some problems, though. For one, you have to go the same pace as everyone else tethered to your raft.

The tubes can also be a hindrance. If you don't watch out while you're swimming, you could be part of an elaborate knot that must be untangled. And you can feel a tug at your mouthpiece if you're too far ahead or behind the others, or if a stiff wind or heavy current pulls the raft above.

But my biggest problem with Snuba is that it left me wanting more. I wanted to go faster, deeper and stay underwater longer. And my only cure might have to be graduating to the next level: Scuba diving.

Reprinted from NYPost.com, December 31, 2009

Bill Gates isn't the only billionaire in Mustique this week. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, is there aboard Al Mirqab, the eighth-largest private yacht in the world, sources say. The boat is owned by his cousin, Sheikh Hamas bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani, Qatar's prime minister. The Emir is rumored to be looking into buying Mustique's Great House, which was built by island founder Colin Tennant (Lord Glenconner), who was inspired by a Mogul palace. Glenconner sold it to Christina Onassis's third husband, Sergei Kauzov. It's now owned by Lawrence Stroll, a Canadian garment manufacturer. Meanwhile, Jude Law is across the bay on nearby island Bequia.

Kralendijk, Bonaire – (January 8, 2010) – The island of Bonaire has swept top honors while continuing its reign as one of the world’s top dive destinations. For the eighth consecutive year, Bonaire has been rated the Top Overall Diving (Caribbean/Atlantic) in Scuba Diving magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2010.

Bonaire also received the #1 rating in 6 other Caribbean/Atlantic categories: Top Marine Life, Top Macro Life, Top Snorkeling, Top Shore Diving, Top Underwater Photography and Top Value.

“It’s an honor to receive 7 #1 rankings and remain one of the top diving destinations for eight straight years,” said Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes, Director of Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB). She continued, “Bonaire has always demonstrated a longstanding commitment to preserving and protecting the environment below the water, and these awards prove divers are continuing to support the community and inspire us to remain leaders in sustainable tourism. With just celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Bonaire National Marine Park in 2009, the park has set a high benchmark for today’s marine environmental standards. This certainly demonstrates that Bonaire is the Diver’s Paradise.”

For the Readers’ Choice Awards, thousands of Scuba Diving subscribers and web users rated their dive experiences on a scale of one to five. Results of the 2010 Awards will be featured in the January/February 2010 issue of Scuba Diving magazine.

SANTO DOMINGO, Jan. 21, 2010 -- The Dominican Republic (DR) Ministry of Tourism assures visitors that all of its cities, tourism and resort areas are conducting normal business operations. Also, the DR government, consulates and embassies are working diligently with the international community on Haiti earthquake relief. Millions of Dominicans have donated time, money, supplies and expertise to help Haiti in these critical hours of need.

All of the tourist areas, hotels, resorts, airports and seaports are open and receiving visitors. The DR experienced no damage from the quake or its aftershocks. Major tourism regions Punta Cana and La Romana on the East Coast, as well as Samaná and Puerto Plata along the North Coast are welcoming winter season tourists from all over the world.

The southern region of the DR has been a stable staging area for the Haiti relief effort and a reliable alternative route into Haiti. Three key airports and a roadway in the DR’s southern region are being used to receive international relief supplies through mostly rural areas of the DR not frequented by visitors. The DR government has stationed military, police and immigration officials along the DR border reinforcing relief efforts to help Haiti. The DR has strong border control permitting only crossings for humanitarian reasons, while also sending critical supplies, equipment, medical experts and millions of dollars for food and relief kitchens directly to Port-au-Prince.

The DR shares the western third of the Island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Punta Cana, the major global tourism destination in the DR is located approximately 400 miles (633 kilometers) east of Haiti’s capital, or a 10-12 hour drive, with numerous mountain ranges separating the two countries.

DR Tourism Update:

. All of the DR’s eight international airports are open and receiving commercial flights. All flights in/out of the DR are running smoothly.
. All of the DR’s cruise terminals, seaports and marinas are open, operating effectively and receiving visitors.
. All of the DR’s beaches, hotels, resorts and tourism businesses are conducting normal business operations.
. The DR is providing some space at strategically located key airports however this is not disrupting commercial flights.
. The DR did not experience any damage from the secondary aftershock that occurred Thursday morning.
. The DR has strong border control with military, police, medical and international aid officials helping Haitians.
. The DR’s security, health, communication and transportation systems are all operating normally and effectively.

By Kristy Ramnarine, Trinidad Express
February 4th 2010

Tourism Minister Joseph Ross says there are still rooms available at the country’s large hotels for Carnival 2010. He was speaking yesterday at the launch of the Trinidad and Tobago Hotel and Guesthouse Roomstock Upgrade Incentive Project at the Hilton Trinidad.

’We expect in the last week before Carnival that there will be a last-minute rush in bookings,’ he said.
’The smaller hotels are filled to capacity and the larger ones we expect to grow to capacity.’ Ross said his ministry was working to ensure that tourists had a safe and enjoyable stay in the country during Carnival.

He added: ’We have also arranged our visitor guides to take them through the city of Port of Spain and to provide them with the relevant info. We’ve made arrangements for those who would like to visit the beaches post-Carnival.’

Kapok Hotel’s general manager, Diana Cohen-Chan, who was also at the launch, said it was the first time in two decades that the 94-room St Clair hotel was not yet fully booked for Carnival.

By DANICA COTO, Associated Press Danica Coto, Associated Press – Fri Jan 21
Reprinted from news.yahoo.com

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Caribbean is attracting tourists in numbers not seen since the start of the global economic crisis, with several islands boasting new records, government officials said Friday.

More than 23 million tourists visited the region in 2010, a nearly 5 percent increase from the 22.1 million that visited the previous year, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The tiny eastern Caribbean islands of Anguilla and St. Lucia drew hordes of tourists from Canada and the U.S and posted double-digit increases. St. Eustatius, a speck of an island that was previously part of the Netherlands Antilles, got a big boost from European visitors.

The Dominican Republic for the first time surpassed 4 million visitors, according to the Ministry of Tourism, while St. Lucia also reported a record 330,000 visitors.

The Bahamas and Jamaica, meanwhile, were among the top eight most requested countries last year, according to a recent quarterly review by Tripology.com, an online travel referral service that caters mostly to U.S. travelers. The Caribbean also was the second most requested destination last year following the U.S., according to the web site, which arranges travel to requested destinations.

While the Bahamas reported a record number of visitors — more than 5 million — the amount they spent is nowhere near what tourists spent in 2008 prior to the economic crisis, said Tourism Minister Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace.

"We have to get there before we begin to celebrate," he said.

The jump in tourists came mostly from cruise ship passengers who spend very little compared with those who stay in the Bahamas. This was the case even though 70 percent of the islands' cruise ship passengers last year were on a Bahamas-only cruise, Vanderpool-Wallace said.

Cruise ship arrivals also increased elsewhere, with a 50 percent jump for the French Caribbean island of Martinique, 20 percent for Bermuda and nearly 18 percent for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jamaica hopes to capture even more of that market with next month's opening of a two-berth cruise port in the north coast town of Falmouth.

The island also unveiled new hotels, a new convention center and a new international airport named after Ian Fleming, creator of stylish spy James Bond. It also plans to target the South American and Eastern European markets this year, especially Brazil and Russia, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said.

"A whole new architecture is being crafted for tourism globally and in the region," he said. "Jamaica responded quickly to refashion itself, to refurbish its products."

In St. Lucia, developers opened several hotels last year that cater to well-heeled tourists, many of whom spent heavily, increasing revenue by 30 percent for a total of $519 million, Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet said.

The island also was touted on the U.S. TV show "The Bachelor," which helped attract more tourists, he said.

"We've had a really fantastic year," he said.

The majority of Caribbean tourists who arrived last year came from the U.S. and Canada, with officials blaming a drop in European tourists on a significant air passenger duty that Britain approved in 2009 and increased last year.

Despite the overall jump in tourism across the region, Josef Forstmayr, president of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Organization, noted that the hotel sector posted just a 1 percent rise in occupancy last year despite a drop in rates.

"It will take us a few more years to get us back to where we were in 2007," he said. "It's a big concern for us. The hotel industry was not highly profitable to start off with."

Forstmayr said the organization also is trying to improve transportation between islands and remove fees and some visa requirements to further boost tourism.

The new year "should see us in an upward trend," he said.
