Phase 2 Clinical Trial Data Reported for Insulin Degludec, an Investigational Ultra-Long-Acting Basal Insulin Analog

Current insulin therapy is not a perfect replacement for endogenous insulin. Recent research is directed toward resolving the lack of predictability of insulin action within and between individuals, maintaining long-lasting peakless action in basal insulins, and increasing the speed of rapid-acting insulins. A total of 7 oral abstracts presented at the American Diabetes Association 70th Annual Scientific Sessions on June 25, 2010 featured data from clinical trials of these new insulins. This report summarizes oral abstracts presented on insulin degludec, a new ultra-long-acting basal insulin analog.

Exenatide Combined with Basal Insulin Improves Glycemic Control with Favorable Non-Glycemic Effects

Exenatide and basal insulin are commonly used to advance treatment of type 2 diabetes. While currently not indicated for combination treatment in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the effects of combining exenatide with insulin therapy in patients with T2DM are being explored.

Faster-acting insulins are needed to more closely mimic physiological insulin secretion; the development of ultra-rapid-acting insulins is considered a key barrier to the development of a fully automated, closed-loop insulin delivery system (ie, artificial pancreas). This report summarizes an oral abstract presented on a monomeric, ultra-rapid-acting human insulin at the American Diabetes Association 70th Annual Scientific Sessions on June 25, 2010.

Implications of U.S. Health Care Reform on the Care and Prevention of Diabetes

A panel of experts discussed the potential impact of U.S. health care reform for patients with diabetes. The focus of this program was the recently enacted U.S. health care reform bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In the course of the symposium, the expert speakers

• Outlined the need for improved access to evidence-based health care for patients with diabetes

• Summarized anticipated gains and pitfalls for patients with diabetes under the recent health care reform

• Described the role of communities in improving health care outcomes

• Provided examples of community-based programs that may provide efficient and cost-effective means to achieve health care reform goals.
