In an article by WebMD, Colette Bouchez discusses how having a weight-loss buddy increases your weight-loss results.

Research has shown that having a buddy can be the difference between weight-loss failure and weight-loss success. Adam Shaffran, DC, author of You Can't Lose Weight Alone: The Partner Power Weight Loss Program, says, "diet buddies are just two people who share a common goal and know they can count on each other to help them achieve that goal in whatever way it takes to do that." When choosing a weight-loss buddy, make sure to choose someone you can depend on that will hold you accountable to your goals.

The Transitions Lifestyle System™ can be done in a 12-week group setting, through transitionslifestyle.com or alone with the Daily Journal. Transitions™ focuses on the glycemic index (GI) of foods. The GI is a measurement of the impact carbohydrates have on your blood sugar levels. When blood sugar rapidly rises, your insulin levels also rise, triggering a metabolic switch that signals your body to store body fat. By eating low-glycemic index foods, the body will have more energy, feel more satisfied and have fewer cravings.*

Nutrigenetics. Epigenetics.

These words that once remained in the background of the health and nutrition fields are now at the forefront of research ventures and are gaining lots of media attention due to the potential they offer people and health professionals to make informed decisions.

Nutrigenomics, or nutritional genomics, nutrigenetics, or nutritional genetics, and epigenetics provide health professionals with the information that they need to offer customized nutritional recommendations to individuals based on genetic variations and life style. In fact, these fields allow health professionals to routinely identify what nutritional and lifestyle approaches are best for their clients to maximize optimal health. Last month, NutraIngredients featured a five-part series highlighting the past, present and future of these once unfamiliar fields and what they could mean for the future of health and nutrition.

Before diving into these fields, it’s important to understand how your genes are linked to your health, and thus why nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics and epigenetics are so useful for understanding your personal health needs. Genes, through the proteins they encode, determine certain functions, including how efficiently we metabolize foods, how effectively we detoxify harmful substances and how we respond to environmental conditions. It is now known that there are countless genetic variations in human populations. When a gene contains a variation (a change from the reference or native state), the protein encoded by that gene may be altered. That genetic alteration can be beneficial or disadvantageous. The goal of these new fields is to understand the impact of these gene alterations on diet, exercise and the environment, and vice versa.

Just what exactly does each field entail? Nutrigenomics refers to how the substances that a person consumes may influence his or her hereditary information or genome. Nutrigenomics is currently at the center of the customized nutrition revolution, sparking the interest of scientists and researchers worldwide. This is due to the ability of nutrigenomics to help people focus on and “capture health improvements, rather than health deterioration,” according to Dr. Ben van Ommen, Executive Director of Nutrigenomics Organization (NuGO). This would involve using a person’s genetic predispositions to determine the best diet and exercise habits based on his or her genetic makeup, rather than waiting until health conditions arise to make needed changes.

“A statistical genetic risk to a disease or condition does not mean that you will express the disease or condition… It is an important starting point, but then the freedom and responsibility is to choose your way; to choose the right diet and optimized lifestyle for your genetic pre-disposition.” – Professor Michael Müller, Scientific Director, Netherlands Nutrigenomics Centre at Wageningen University

It is important to understand the difference between nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics. Nutrigenetics refers to how a person’s genetic makeup will influence how he or she responds to diet, supplementation, etc, which is quite different from the nutrigenomics. Nutrigenetics involves identifying specific genetic variations in individuals to determine differences in gene expression, and it is based on the principle that ingested nutrients or a diet lacking of certain nutrients can have a direct effect on gene expression.

Similar to nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics, epigenetics should be acknowledged as its own field that seeks to explain a different set of interactions. Epigenetics is defined as, “the study of changes in gene activity that doesn’t involve a change to DNA.” It refers to how a person’s overall environment – including exercise, environmental exposures and nutrition – plays a distinct role in gene expression. This information is helpful because it allows people and health professionals to understand how factors such as where you live can affect your body, and how your body will show physical evidence of that effect.

All in all, nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics and epigenetics each have the potential to help people learn and understand their bodies and how and why they react to certain things, including diet, exercise and the environment. This new direction for nutrition is the opposite of the “one size fits all” approach, and instead aims to provide a customized synopsis of an individual’s health, helping them understand what options they have to reach optimal health. This new personal approach signals the start of a proactive outlook on health and nutrition that will result with each person having a dietary and exercise regimen that is personalized to his or her own needs.

For More Info: http://bit.ly/rulX2l

Bust The Gut with:

Another very important goal, however, should be fat loss.

It’s usually taken for granted that this is more or less what they mean. There is, after all, nothing unsightly, unhealthy or undesirable about muscle. In fact, the more muscle someone has, the healthier they’re likely to be. What we are talking about here is a higher relative amount of muscle–in other words, a higher percentage–and a lower percentage of fat. Various ways of exercising and eating have been designed to help people reach this goal, and now a simple, all-natural supplement has been developed that supports this goal.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a special type of fatty acid which comes from safflower oil, in much the same way that Omega-3 fatty acids are sourced from fish. Over 30 clinical studies have been published investigating CLA and weight management, with 18 of those studies using Tonalin® CLA, the brand widely recognized as the gold standard for its extreme purity. They’ve all had positive outcomes, with reduced body fat in test subjects.

The fat loss occurs in several ways. On one side, CLA inhibits fat storage by promoting normal levels of LPL (lipoprotein lipase–a fat-storing enzyme). It also promotes the body’s cells to be lipolytic, or fat-burning (as opposed being glycolytic, or carbohydrate-burning). Tonalin® CLA also works to preserve existing muscle tissue. Lipolysis is promoted during exercise, and adding exercise into the equation promotes even greater fat loss, while still preserving muscle. A low-glycemic style of eating–like in the Transitions Lifestyle System®–completes the package, and brings the best results.

The Transitions Lifestyle System works great for weight loss, and with the right diet, exercise and Tonalin® CLA, even better for fat loss!

Link to Original Article

Bust The Gut with:

The statistics show that 53 percent of American adults are using some form of supplementation.

Lead researcher Jaime Gahche and her counterparts called the use of supplements “widespread” in their assessment, and that supplements are “contributing substantially to total nutrient intake” in the United States.

The report looked at supplement use among adults from 2003 to 2006, and compared it to use in 1988 to 1994. Among the findings:

Nearly 40 percent of all Americans use at least one multivitamin/multimineral product, with use more common among women than men. That is up from 30 percent in the previous findings.

The newest statistics show that more than 60 percent of all women over the age of 60 use a calcium supplement, compared to less than 30 percent in previous reports.

Supplemental vitamin D use has increased dramatically in both men and women since the first study, especially in adults over the age of 40.

The study’s authors point out that supplement usage information should be collected to have an accurate picture of total health. In an interview with WebMD, Gahche said:

Dietary supplement use has increased in adults over age 20 since 1994, and we have over one-half of Americans taking one or more supplements a day. This information is important because such a high prevalence of people take dietary supplements. So we need to make sure we capture this information when assessing nutritional status. If we only include food and beverages, we are missing out on a big proportion.

While supplements can help offset nutritional deficiencies, many experts agree that taking supplements is not a way to make up for a poor diet. This thinking, according to Dr. Orly Avitzur, medical adviser for Consumer Reports, has led to an explosion in the supplement market, which accounted for approximately $27 billion in spending in 2009.

“There’s no substitute for a healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Avitzur told CNN.

That’s why it’s important to talk with your Health Professional about the types of supplements available on the market, and how each can help you achieve your own optimal health. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening as often as it should.

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Association of Retired People and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, just 58% of people who take supplements discussed products with a health professional.

One of the most important reasons to discuss supplement use with your Health Professional is because not all supplements are created equal. There are great differences between products on the market today.

Some supplements work faster and more effectively than others, providing rapid absorption and higher nutrition value than others. This can be for a number of reasons: the method which the product is delivered through the body, the elimination of fillers and binders that provide little nutritional value to the products, and the quality of ingredients used to create the product.

When choosing a supplement – as a majority of Americans are doing based on the latest research – it’s important to note these differences. Since I start with Transitions my blood pressure started coming right down and staying down. This is great because I thought that I would be taking those meds for the rest of my life.

The other good news is that I lost a couple more pounds since you weighted me last. When I talked to Dr Bera I let him know how much I liked the program and how much I needed to continue in the program. While I know the diet I need the SUPPORT. He said Doris will let me know as soon as the meetings are ready to start up again.

Carl thanks again for getting on the right path with the Transitions, it is making a big difference in my life.

Thanks
Carol F

South Side Medical Facebook Page Click Here

Call to join the next Free Secrets to Weight Loss Seminar in Easton PA: 610-250-7950

For More Info On Transitions Click Here
Bust The Gut with:

By exposing the comfortable relationships between business and government, Kenner gradually shines light on the dark underbelly of the American food industry. The USDA and FDA are supposed to protect the public, so why is it that both government regulatory agencies have been complicit in allowing corporations to put profit ahead of consumer health, the American farmer, worker safety, and even the environment? As chicken breasts get bigger and tomatoes are genetically engineered not to go bad, 73,000 Americans fall ill from powerful new strains of E. coli every year, obesity levels are skyrocketing, and adult diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Perhaps if the general public knew how corporations use exploited laws and subsidies to create powerful monopolies, the outrage would be enough to make us think more carefully about the food we put into our bodies.

Bust The Gut with:

Instead of treating the same patients over and over again, they have found a way to get the patients off the “illness treadmill” and have found a “wellness path” to follow.

At the same time, these doctors have taken control of their lives and do not have to work in a crisis mode all the time.
Our company has helped prominent cardiologists to seamlessly integrate these goals into their practices. We can also share personal experiences of a patient’s continued survival and improvement from congestive heart failure for over 8 years.

From the Book Reverse Heart Disease Now: Click Here

While most books focus solely on the role of cholesterol in heart disease, Reverse Heart Disease Now draws on new research that points to the surprising other causes. Two leading cardiologists draw on their collective fifty years of clinical cardiology research to show you how to combine the benefits of modern medicine, over-the-counter vitamins and supplements, and simple lifestyle changes to have a healthy heart.

Intro to "Reverse Heart Disease Now": (Summarized)

Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra's Story

It's hard to put into words all this running from one emergency to another. For four or five years, I never ate lunch. I had no time for it. My lifestyle was very hard on my family life. My beeper would go off in the middle of my son’s soccer game. This was before cell phones, and I'd leave to find a pay phone to call the hospital. It was a good life in the sense that I felt I was always needed but a hard life, nevertheless. When I got home from work, I couldn't talk to my wife because I was all wired up and exhausted. One day, I woke up and seriously questioned what I was doing. I liked my job, but I also hated it. After doing some heroics on a heart patient whom we had treated before, I told another doctor that we were barking up the wrong tree. We prescribed drugs and applied different therapies aimed at directly fixing the problem. For the short term, our efforts worked. We were doing all the things we were trained to do but we weren't helping to heal our patients for the long term.

In that same year—it was 1978- I encountered Jacob Rinse, a ninety -one-year-old Dutch petroleum chemist who changed my life. Years before, he had been diagnosed with severe coronary artery disease but had refused bypass surgery. Being an inquisitive scientist, he had investigated the nature of heart disease and formulated his own vitamin and mineral concoctions. He thrived on the home-made program. I saw patients reach levels of healing I could never imagine possible with conventional care alone. Instead of tears of sorrow, I repeatedly witnessed tears of joy. I received hearty hugs from rejuvenated patients.

Dr. James C. Robert's Story

I was a midnight warrior at the start of my cardiology practice. I was in the hospital all the time. There were eight coronary care unit beds in the hospital where I was on staff. One Tuesday afternoon, I was managing all eight patients. I was doing invasive procedures over and over. In basketball they talk about triple doubles: players striving to reach double digits in scoring points, rebounding, and assisting other scorers in a game. The best players do it maybe a few times in a season. In my work, I strived for a triple double every day. That meant any three of the following "performances": two pacemakers, two angiograms, two right heart catheterizations for heart failure, two balloon pumps, two admissions.

After four or five years in practice, I began to realize that I was falling into a frustrating pattern: treating the same people over and over without really getting them well. The same patients always came back. It was a revolving door. I would do heroics for their heart, but they might develop gastrointestinal tract bleeding or kidney failure as a side effect of the treatment. I felt like I was spinning my wheels. I would treat someone with heart failure in crisis, a patient short of breath, his or her lungs full of fluid because of a stiff heart not pumping effectively. I would overcome the immediate danger and send the patient home. But because we weren't dealing with the cause of the heart failure, the patient would return in crisis again.

Within a year, I noticed my hospital admissions dropping. My patients were doing better, and I was starting to feel that I could actually do something besides crisis management. My patients take their necessary medications. That's important and often critical to their survival. But the difference is that they are taking supplements that stop or minimize the damage that ruins their arteries and heart cells. Over a ten-year period, this approach has totally revolutionized my practice.

Researched and Summarized by Jordan Dannin PHd

Bust The Gut with:

They found high levels of vitamin D versus low levels reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 33 %, the risk of type 2 diabetes by 55% and of metabolic syndrome by 51%.

DYKT: The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics analyzed vitamin D in blood samples of more than 3,400 participants that were selected to be representative of the 24 million older adults in the United States. Compared to those with optimal vitamin D status, those with low vitamin D levels were 3 times more likely to die from heart disease and 2.5 times more likely to die from any cause.

DYKT: A study, published in Archives of Internal Medicine earlier this year, identified vitamin D as playing a significant role in boosting the immune system and warding off colds and flu.

DYKT: A major prospective study was recently released, published in 2007 by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This groundbreaking study was conducted in Nebraska on 403 postmenopausal women over a period of four years. The researchers reported that the women who received 1,100 iU of vitamin D and 1,000 mg (milligrams) of calcium per day for four years reduced their risk of developing cancer of any kind by 60 % compared to those women who received a placebo.

DYKT: During the first year of the study, some women developed cancer, and the researchers theorized that their cancers likely had been developing before the launch of the study. When they adjusted the statistics, removing the first year of the study, the results were even more dramatic.
