(back in the 50s, they had exotic "crazes"-- like the fanaticism for hawaiian slack key guitar, polka, tango, and rhumba.. always patronizing these styles and packaging them with this wild, primitive "other-ness" - this was the tradition, just look through any stack of lps from the early 60s and you'll see international music packaged for an audience.. of wide eyed tourists.. but today we are much more internationally aware, the average person is likely to have new music from 20 different countries on their ipod) If you consider modern genres like rock, electronica, club/dance music, reggae, salsa, rap, soul--- they're international genres... hearing the variations in the musical forms from place to place is what makes this show so thrilling for me to produce every week... of course, each culture has it's own voice and its own unique language - and these differences are important to recognize, and respect, and preserve, by all means... but there are many similarities between cultures as well... music is the universal language.. and it speaks in a way that words never could.. (the show title is also inspired by a brilliant track by the same name on the Clash's "Sandinista" album-- the first record I ever owned.. check it out... ) "If Music Could Talk" 7-9pm EST Sundays on WRIR- www.wrir.org, and locally on 97.3FM ... check the blog for more details and a huge podcast archive going back about 3 years!! http://turquoisekid.blogspot.com thanks to www.radio4all.net for hosting the show podcasts and thanks to WRIR... www.wrir.org for being Richmond's one and only independent radio station... people of the world--- please support independent media !!!</itunes:summary><itunes:category text="Music" /><atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com" />

Bollywood Night - Dec 19th!!!

Start the holiday season off right!!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 201px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U3gBoWxlk1c/SxfCRRMXI9I/AAAAAAAAA1U/tovN29MzJkk/s320/12136_191073774150_505334150_3086487_7674011_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411007079237755858" />
Bollywood Night!!

If Music Could Talk - Dec 13, 2009

PODCAST LINK

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>PODCAST LINK</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>dj carlito</itunes:author><itunes:summary>PODCAST LINK</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>world,global,music,international,reggae,soukous,soca,dangdut,bhangra,bollywood,rock,punk,house,soul,county,afrobeat,roots</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.radio4all.net/files/djcarlito765@yahoo.com/1757-1-imct_dec_12_09.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Wunmi needs your help to record an album in Ghana..

this is a D.I.Y. project that she cant do without your help - - you cant always rely on record label contracts to do daring and creative projects like this one... This year we’ll be featuring an extensive silent auction with artwork created or produced in Virginia, as well as services, gift certificates and talent offered by local folks — everything from theatre tickets to fly-casting lessons. Plus exotic food from local restaurants and global music by WRIR 97.3 DJ’s [Charles Williams aka DJ Greybeard, and Me, DJ Carlito!] , creative things to see and do, and a cash bar featuring Virginia wines, Richbrau beer, and Karmatinis made with Cirrus Vodka.

While the karma theme suggests exotic lands, this event champions homegrown talent and community generosity.
