#Foodtrip 2015: Ormoc Food Adventures

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Ormoc with family and friends. The trip was not just about beautiful places but it was also about yummy food. For 3 days, my tummy was filled some of best dishes, delicacies, and food favorites that Ormoc has to offer. Here some of the delicious food that made my Ormoc trip memorable.

Bahug Bahug

We arrived in Ormoc around 3 pm and it was a good time for snacks. We just went to a nearby bakery and bought some bread. +Nezte Virtudazo bought some bahug bahug (pudding) for us to enjoy. Before the much more sophisticated Red Velvet became popular, the most popular red thing that you can buy in the bakery is the bahug bahug. I cannot help but feel nostalgic when we ate the flavorful bread pudding.

Goto by Lugaw ni Bossing

Next up, Nezte and I went to lugawan and had some luggage and goto. We both ordered a rice porridge full of chewy yet delightful innards. It was an excellent snack for less than 50 pesos.

Dinner at Yoyo's Seafoods Place

The restaurant we visited often while in Ormoc was Yoyo's Seafood Place. The restaurant was basically a sutukil that features the fresh catch from the Ormoc City market. We loved the Sinuglaw, Grilled Blue Marlin and their Tortang Talong. Yoyo's is definitely a good place if you love seafood.

Lake Danao National Park Outing

We went to Lake Danao and my aunt in Ormoc prepared some awesome dishes for our lunch. The heroes of our lunch were the different seafood dishes. I had fun eating the halabos na hipon, crabs, kinilaw, sinugba, and the pusit. I did not want to stop eating.

We also brought some popular baked goodies from the city like the Cassava Cake and Cashew Tartlets.

For my mom, the most enjoyable part was eating the nilung-ag na saging ug camote (Boiled bananas and sweet potatoes)

Special Bahalina: Chuvas Regal

Nezte and I enjoyed 3 year old coconut wine (bahalina) made by Uncle Frank Tobio. The local wine was one of the highlights of Nezte's trip. He loved it so much that he wanted to bring some to Cebu.

Sabin Resort

We stayed in Sabin Resort for 3 nights and we usually eat breakfast there. Aside from the American breakfast that we usually get in the morning, we also tried their Crispy Pata and their famous Queen Pineapples.

If my mom would tell me that we will go to Ormoc again, without hesitation I will say Yes. It such an awesome gastronomic adventure that left salivating while writing this post.

I will be back, Ormoc! :)

10 Must-Have Shots while at Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman Island is fast becoming one of the favorite islands of tourists and locals in the country. This island off the coast Palompon, Leyte boasts of its pristine beach and crystal clear water. Many visitors even stay at the island overnight. It is such a nice place that I personally recommend that you would visit some time. Here are 10 of the Must-Have Shots to take when you are going to this island in between Leyte and Cebu:

1. Banca Shot or Boat Shot

The island can only be reached via motorized banca or speed boat. The trip lasts around 1 and a half hours from Palompon port. Taking pictures is one good way to pass time. Do not waste to many shots though because the best is yet to come.

2. Selfie or Usie

While the #selfie has become one of the most popular shots in recent times, a lot of people of forget to take one when they reached the island. Many become so mesmerized with Kalanggaman to the point that they forget about selfies. It is such a lovely place.

3. Solo

In Kalanggaman Island, a shot taken at a wider angle can be way better than a selfie. A solo can show how pristine and peaceful the island is. You can have shots as if you "own" the whole island. During sunny days, there is a great contrast between the sand, the sea, and the sky.

4. Swimming/Water Shot

Prepare your beautiful swimming attires as Kalanggaman has a beach that can be enjoyed by non-swimmers. You can just lay around at the shallow portion and pretend to be a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. You can also mingle with tourists who are also loving the waters.

5. Pictures with fellow Tourists

It is quite easy to meet new friends at Kalanggaman. Say Hi and ask to take a photo, chances are they will say YES. A lot of foreigners go there and they are generally friendly.

6. The Jump Shot

It's time to be creative. Design your own signature jump shot and do it in Kalanggaman Island. +Nezte Virtudazo has his running man shot while I have my "falling" shot. Set your camera to burst mode to be able a get a great shot in one take.

7. Synchronized Jump Shot

Find a partner and jump together like superheroes. If you have a creative mind, a well rehearsed jump shot will be a great profile photo on your social media accounts.

8. The Group Jump Shot

Kids can do it. Grandmas can do it. The whole family can even do it. It takes timing but most cameras and even cellphones are capable of burst shots now. The white sand and the clear sky could be an excellent backdrop for an amazing group jump shot.

9. Jump Shot with Strangers

Why not let the tourists have a piece of the action as well. Invite people visiting Kalanggaman to join you and your friends to make an cool group jumpsuit.

10. The Chill Shot

There is only one major requirement for this shot ---- ATTITUDE. Pose like you mean it. Pose as if you own the island. It is not hard to pull off this shot and most likely the chill shot will be your profile photo for the summer. My friend +Nezte Virtudazo calls his summer shot as his "Cool Kid" pose. #Summer2015: It's More Fun in Busay, Cebu (Temple of Leah and Tops)

Summer 2015 has started and I decided to start it with a road trip to Busay, Cebu City. Being one of the highest points of Cebu City, Busay has been popular to tourists and locals for sight-seeing and other adventures. One of the most popular vantage points to Cebu City is Tops but recently, a new structure has been built in the area and it fast eclipsing Tops as the most popular tourist destination in the mountain areas of Cebu. The place is called Temple of Leah and it a complex inspired by Greece. After seeing so many awesome photos in Instagram, I decided to check to place with my wife and some family friends.

The structure is not complete yet but it is been visited by multitudes of people daily. It is inspired by Greco-Roman architecture and the columns are similar to the ruins of Parthenon.

One of the favorite spots for photos are the golden lion statues near the entrance.

The place is usually packed during weekends as many people bring their families and friends to have a look at Cebu's newest tourist destination. There is no entrance fee so everyone can practically visit this place.

There are statues that could be influenced by mythology. This is probably going to be a statue of Apollo.

The place is spacious enough for some amazing selfies with friends.

After an hour of going around the Temple of Leah, we proceeded to Tops lookout point.

At Tops, I pretended to be a wannabe fashion blogger and did some ridiculous poses. There are actually many spots that are perfect for a "fashion" shoot. The entrance fee at Tops is 100 pesos per person.

My wife is probably my best prop for my imaginary fashion post.

Tops is still one of the best vantage points if you wanna look at Cebu from an elevated area.

It was a fun road trip and I will probably go back to both of these places with a different costume. If you do not have a car, you can always go here via Habal-Habal near JY Square Lahug. Comment and share your awesome summer adventures to me. ;)

Swimming with the Butanding in Oslob

Last year, my little brother decided to visit Cebu along with wife. They came all the way from NSW Australia and they were looking for a fun activity in Cebu. One of the ideas that he liked was going to Oslob to swim with the whale sharks or butanding. Oslob is a town in the southern part of Cebu Island that is a 2 hours away from Cebu City. Recently, the 4th class municipality became a famous spot for whale shark watching.

The butanding watching has exponentially increased the town's tourist arrivals and income. In Oslob, you will have an up close and personal experience with these massive fish. We drove going there and we jut directly went to one of the resorts in Barangay Tan-awan. We paid the local rate and also rented their underwater camera. Our wives just decided to stay on the boat. If you are going there, I really suggest you might as well swim with the whale sharks and at least have one photo. ;) Here some of the pictures of our adventure:

2014 was a year for full of nice food photos using my Xperia Z1 and the Sony QX10. It was fun taking the photos but not as enjoyable as eating the yummy food. Yes! 2014 was one of my best gastronomic years and I have pictures as proof. Here are some of the yummiest food that gave me #foodgasm:

Scones at The Chocolate Chamber. They are probably one of the very few Cebu restaurants that offer this item that somehow reminds of Australia where many of my family members reside.

The decadent Chocolate cake at The Chocolate Chamber was really a sweet treat.

Pasta from Idea Italia. Well, if you look for Pasta why not go to a restaurant owned by an Italian.

The flavor-infused hot chocolate in The Chocolate Chamber. Flavours could be as nice as mint or cinnamon to as outrageous as Chili. It comes in very nice cups and saucers. ;)

David's Tea House's Chicken and other dims specialties. It looks good and tastes even better.

I love taking photos of food and I even made an FB page solely dedicated to fun. One time, I was really craving for some Roti along with my friend Nezte. Since we both workout in Fitness First Ayala, the obvious choice would be Banana Leaf for our Roti Hunt. We enjoyed Roti and some other of their specialties. I particularly liked the Roti dipped in curry sauce....yummy!

Mobile Photography with Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I tried out the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and I am pretty impressed with its camera. The newest smartphone from the World's No.1 Mobile phone brand has 16 MP rear camera with a host of cool features that #selfie addicts would love. Here are some of the default features that I love:

1. Dual Shot

This feature allows a user to take a photo using the front and rear camera simultaneously. It's like double selfie and your post will have a Picture in Picture effect without using other apps. You can post the unique picture in Social Media in just a few seconds.

2. Background Defocus (Selective Focus)

Want to have to have those booked effects that you get using prime lenses with DSLRs? Well, Samsung's new camera software allows users to select focus areas to blur backgrounds or foregrounds. This is perfect for portraits.

3. Rear Camera Selfie
The rear camera is always the better camera but it is quite hard to take a nice selfie using the rear cam. With Samsung Galaxy Note 4's rear camera selfie mode, you can take very nice selfies without pressing any button.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a note-worthy smartphone if love taking photos and selfies. It has a host of other features to make your life better but as a person who loves taking photos, I would surely consider this as a smartphone option.

QX10 Adventures: Milo Little Olympics

I recently decided to buy a QX10 lens camera. I have been trying to improve the image quality of my phone and I realized that no smart phone can match the IQ of a digital camera. The main reason is that due to it size limitations, the image sensors of phone cameras are way smaller than a digital camera.

I kinda missed my DSLR but since it is still out of commission, I have to find an alternative. I do not have enough cash yet to start buying the mirror less wonders so I decided to get the QX10. In the Philippines, this Sony product sells a shade below 10,000 pesos.

The QX10 can be used as a stand alone digital camera but it will be kinda weird because it has no viewfinder and you will not be able to preview the image that you took. Its full potential can only be unleashed if you pair it with a smart phone. It can connect to your smartphone via two ways. You can use wifi or NFC if your phone has one. For non-Sony smartphones, you have to download Playmemories mobile from Istore or Google Play Store. The app is for FREE.

Since I am using an Xperia Z1, I did not have a hard time initialising my new smart phone setup. The QX10 can easily be attached to any smartphone. There is a bit of lag in connecting to PlayMemories but it isn't much of a hassle. Once connected, you just probably upgraded your mobile photography possibilities tenfold. You can zoom in without much loss of detail and the 2M pixel copy in your smartphone is sharp enough to be posted in Instagram or Facebook. You have to option to have an 18 MP copy but transfer rates could be long and if you are a happy snapper, you will easily eat up your phone's memory. I am content with the 2 MP option.

I decided to bring the QX10 in a sporting event. I went to the Milo Little Olympics Visayas eliminations and watched volleyball, basketball, and taekwondo. I was blown away with some of the shots a took. It was clear and the QX10 was able to capture some nice action shots.

All in all, I was quite happy with the first few photos of the QX10-Xperia Z1 combo. I will be posting more shots and I expect to have better photos in smart phone unfriendly situations.

Selfie stick!

The latest craze in mobile photography is the #selfie. A selfie is basically a self-photo. People take selfies when they go to new places. They take a selfie with celebrities. They take selfies with their dogs. The #selfie is one of the most popular hashtags in Instagram. If you have a smartphone or tablet, I am sure you have taken at least one selfie.

The selfie craze as moved up to another level with the invention of the monopod or the selfie stick. The selfie is very cheap but it will really boost your #selfie posts. While selfie sticks have its share of haters, there are more people who love it.

Recently, my younger brother asked me to buy him 6 selfie sticks of that give it to his friends in Australia. I bought 2 kinds of selfie sticks. One with a wifi remote and the other without. The one with the remote allows the users to take a photo without pressing anything from their phone which is very convenient specially when using a long stick. The manual one is cheap but it will take time to master because you need to set your timer so that you can use it properly.

There are also nice smartphones now that has features like smile shutter which will allow you to use your rear camera for selfies. The rear camera is usually 3-5 times better in terms of resolution versus the front camera. There are also some apps that can help you in taking the best selfies like the clap shutter.

If you love selfies, it would be wise to get a selfie stick. Try it but beware because you could become the next selfie addict.

Xperia Z1 Adventures: All Ladies Cebu10s Rugby Festival

Cebu recently hosted a Ladies Rugby 10s Tournament participated by teams from Manila, Davao, Hong Kong, Thainland and the host city Cebu. Rugby has been gaining popularity over the years and the Cebu Dragons has been one of the provincial clubs in the country.

This weekend's tournament was won by the Bangkok Banger Belles. They beat the Cebu Lady Dragons in the championship match. Here are some photos of the event:

Buying a Clip Lens for Smartphone

As more people own smart phones and phone cameras becoming better and better, more products come out to make the mobile photography experience better. The monopod or selfie sticks became so popular for instagrammers, bloggers, and selfie fanatics for one. Recently, I saw an instagram ad about clip lenses which gives your camera more possibilities. The price was 400 pesos so I decided to get one.

I bought a Lieqi Universal Clip Lens. The clip lens set includes fish eye, wide-angle, and macro lens. The set includes a universal clip that will allow the lenses to be attached to your phone's camera. The clip lens fit well with my Xperia Z1 and I did not have a hard time using it.

I first used the fish eye lens and took some unusual photos in Phat Pho where I ate lunch. I am going to test the clip lens sometimes against the fish eye effect in my camera.

It took me time to figure the macro lens but when I did, I was able to take a really "close" shot of the packaging of the clip lens.

For the wide lens, I cannot really be certain if I can see difference but I will give a more detailed test in the next few days.

Having a clip lens has potential to increase the fun factor of a smartphone but it is not really necessary. This is a good accessory for those who like to be creative and play around with photos. It could give your Instagram posts a unique look and could earn you more likes or followers.

XPERIA Z1 Adventures at Work: The Courtyards Banawa

Recently, I tested my Xperia Z1's capability to become a work and productivity tool. I work in the Real Estate industry and part of our job is to check out new projects in our area. Normally, I would bring a DSLR or a digital camera. I wanted to see if the Xperia Z1 has what it takes to be my partner in business.

My group checked a new condominium development by Primary Homes in Banawa. The Courtyards at Banawa is a walk-up condominium concept that is marketed for the middle class Filipinos who want to reside in Cebu City.

Primary Homes built and dress up model units for clients to see. I was able to take really good photos using the intelligent auto setting of my smartphone camera. The indoor shots were clear and details were spot on.

I am very happy with how my photos turn out and the help of other Android apps, I was able enhance and upload my photos without sending it to a PC. My Xperia Z1 has indeed helped me in making my job easier. The Sony Xperia Z1 is very capable in my different situations, whether it is work, play, adventures, and family affairs, the smartphone can produce excellent photos plus it can do a lot more than just a camera.

Smartphones now are capable of many things yet a lot people just bought it because they want to use for calling and texting only. Just like my Sony Xperia Z1, your smartphones can actually be very useful even at work. Let me know if you need help with how you can do more with your smartphone. ;)

Pictorials at Blue Coast Residences

A couple months back, the Rainmakers went to Blue Coast Residences to have a summer pictorial. The sky was clear, it was a good day to shoot some very nice photos.

Ariane and Grace were in their swimsuits and they were as enticing as the clear blue waters of the subdvision's swimming pool.

The girls were so game in posing all over Blue Coast Residences. Sheila, Febe, Ariane, Nelfa, Kim, and Grace were really enjoying the pictorials.

The boys were just content in playing basketball under the summer sun. Clyde, Kerwin, and your truly were trying to channel our inner Lebron James.

Sony Xperia Z2 now available in the Philippines!!! Should I ditch my Xperia Z1?

Last October I bought my Xperia Z1. My main reason of buying it was its camera and many possibilities I can do with a waterproof phone. My phone malfunctioned after 1 month. Luckily, it was replaced after 2 months of waiting. I am happy with it ever since.

Although I missed many important occasions and events while the my phone is in the service centre like Christmas, New Year, Sinulog, and Valentine's day, I was able to utilize my Z1 in the summer. I was able to take countless of underwater shots with it. I am happy Xperia Z1 owner.

Recently, Sony Philippines launched Xperia Z2 in the country. The new model is a bit thinner than its predecessor that came out less than a year ago. The Z2 has 4k video capability and it has the ability to record slow motion video as well. It's rear camera is the same but the front camera now is at 2.2 MP. The display is slightly larger at 5.2 inches. The introductory price is at 33,990.

This is one heck of a phone but I will not sell my Z1 for a Z2 since I felt that my Xperia Z1 can still satisfy my needs. If I ever I am going to upgrade my phone it will probably be Xperia Z4 once it arrives.

The nice thing about the Z1 series is that it is the kind of phone that you can truly enjoy using. If you love shooting pics, this phone is for you. A rarely use the 20 MP mode but the intelligent auto at 8MP really captures better pictures compared to the smart phones of my friends.

Having a better phone camera has its downside though as you become the official photographer when you go out with your friends. It could be tiring and annoying sometimes but it's not an issue with me. Because of the Xperia Z1, my instagram account came alive.

I will not ditch my Xperia Z1 just yet. There is a slim chance though that I will get an Xperia Z2 if I avail a Smart Plan 2000. Here is link of their Xperia Z2 unliLTE deal. That's another thing I like about the Xperia Z line. LTE baby! Super-fast connection which makes the phone an ideal workmate. LTE allows you to Upload pics, do Emails, post in Instagram, check in with Swarm and Foursquare, and many more. It maximizes what your smart phone can do.

If you are planning to buy a premium smart phone right now, you should consider the Xperia Z2. If you cannot afford it, you can probably get a good deal with an Xperia Z1 or Z1 compact. If you are looking for a waterproof Tab, you better ask about the Xperia Z2 Tablet.

Foodtrip June 2014: Mismukuno and Pizza Republic

Last week, I checked out two of the newest opened restaurants in Cebu. I guess is a perfect to open new establishments as it coincides with the opening of classes. The first restaurant that I checked was Pizza Republic by Giuseppe Genco. This pizza place is all about making your own pizza. It is so much fun picking and mixing your own topping, sauce, cheese, and oil.

The second mew restaurant that I visited this month is Mismukuno Teppanyaki. Mismukuno is another restaurant of the Pages group who owns and manages Mooon Cafe and Lantaw restaurants. What's so unique about Mismukuno is that they making Cebuanos experience what a traditional teppanyaki place would feel like. At Mismukuno, your order is cooked in front of you. You can can see, smell, and hear how meat sizzles into a very satisfying meal.

Apps: InstaMag

A lot of mobile applications or apps have enhanced the capabilities of phone cameras. One of my most used apps is InstaMag. InstaMag allows me to create nice collages with the use of my phone. I can practically create collages since it doesn't need the internet to work. Let's say if I go to a new restaurants and I took several photos. Right there and then you can instantly make magazine styled collages using the app. Once finish making a collage, you now have the option to instagram it or post in Facebook.

What's nice about InstaMag that it is free and its library is updated often to provide users new templates. It has been one of most used apps even when I was still using my old Samsung Galaxy Y. With this app the possibilities are endless.

Xperia Z1 Adventures: Kalag Kalag 2013

November 1 and 2 are important holidays to many families here in the Philippines. In Cebu, people flick to different cemeteries on All Saint's day and All Soul's day. We call it here the kalag kalag. Kalag is the Visayan translation of soul.

This year, I went to three different cemeteries as usual. Unlike in the past years, I just brought my camera phone instead of a dlsr. I really had a great time. The Xperia Z1 allowed me to instantly post my pictures to the internet. The different effects were a big hit to kids. My only wish that the Z1 have a battery stamina but all in all, it performed beyond my initial expectations.

Xperia Z1 Photos: ARCH Con 2013 at the Ayala Center Cebu

Last weekend, the 2013 Arch Con was held. One of the highlights of the event was the cosplay competition. Several participants dressed in there favorite anime characters and show off their magnificent prop-making and characterization skills. It so happened that I was there with my Sony Xperia Z1. I was able to take some photos of the participants and the other activities in the Arch Con. I just used mostly the superior auto mode and sometimes the manual mode.

Mobile phones have gone a long way since its started to become available to normal consumers way back in the 90's. I used to own a Nokia 5110 as well as a 3210. I even got business phones like the 8110 and 8210. Mobile phones are not just phones anymore. With the increase internet coverage comes new functionalities. Cameras started to be integrated into mobile phones and it opened a whole new world. In conjunction with apps words like #selfie #foodporn #ootd etc. were invented. It is so amazing now how mobile photography has become an integral part of the daily lives of many people. With sites like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, you can practically take a pic and share it to the world instantly. With this development in mind, I realized that I needed a phone that could allow me to be more "connected" and more productive. After months of agonizingly saying NO to some cool new phones, I finally gave in to Sony Xperia Z1.

Why did a pick a Sony? For one, it is one of the latest phones having the most advanced chipsets. Its fast and the Z1 optimally runs apps faster even than some laptops. Second, it has 20.7 megapixel camera. The image quality is quiet good for a mobile and so far, I have taken good images with it. Third, it's LTE capable. With LTE, you can stay connected 24/7 (for fee, off course). Connections are so fast you can upload those 2- 6MB photos in no time. Fourth, the Xperia Z1 is waterproof. It's useful for a guy like me who is quite active and I could be sweaty at times which could be a problem with other phones specially now when everything is almost touchscreen. Fifth, it has expandable memory. Some phones have limited memories making you end up having less space for pics, apps, and videos. If ever I would use the 20MP mode, I would probably need the memory. These are just 5 good reasons but there are more. I have been using my Z1 for a week now and I know the possibilities are endless. I was even able to blog using my phone. I am now perpetually connected to Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and many more. Plus I could even play apps like Candy Crush and the millions of Android games out there. I will be posting mostly pictures captured via my Xperia Z1 in the coming days. I hope you will like it.

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

When you search Bohol in google, you probably end up with pictures of the famous Chocolate Hills. Well, here are some of my pictures in my latest visit of this popular tourist spot in Carmen, Bohol. If you happen to be in the area soon, never forget to take your own version of the Chocolate Hills jump shot. ;)
