TechBays my new blog

I have created another blog called TechBays that will feature new or updated technologies that simplify or enrich our lives, or at least my life. Most of the technology related topics will be posted via TechBays.

I grew up in Iligan City, in the southern part of the Philippines, known as the industrial city of the south. The industries are situated along the Iligan bay. Currently I live in San Jose, California, part of what is known as Silicon Valley, which is situated in the San Francisco bay area.

My passion for technology plus the bays of my interest. Hence TechBays.

Safer with Mobile GMap

I feel safer with the new My Location feature of Google Map for Mobile (GMM.) If you rely on GMM for directions, your tendency while driving will be to look at your mobile phone for directions, then look through your left and right for street names, and through your front for actually driving. And you repeat these steps until you feel dizzy or worse.

GMM gives you My Location for approximate location, and other features such as real-time traffic (with green, yellow, or red line indicators,) satellite imagery, and local search. See photo below. Also, the video below explains how Google extrapolates your location.

Save Money via Mint

I tried Mint, a free online money management application, based on the feedback it got from the web community. It is a wonderful application.

I've been tracking my expenses and finances via Gdocs manually. This time Mint does all the record keeping and more.

Mint has saved me time, energy, and money by doing the following:

Consolidated my accounts in a single interface, and giving me overall expenses pie and bar charts.
Cut my time and energy typing expenses in a spreadsheet. It extracts all line items from your accounts.
Saved me money by comparing my current bank rates to other banks with higher interest rates.

It does more by allowing you to set budgets on Gas, Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, and other categories. You can tag expense line items per your classification requirement.

Mint has a special feature that tells you on "Ways to Save." By knowing the money you have on Certificate of Deposits or Savings accounts with a bank, it proposes another bank that has higher interest rates and computes the annual returns from both banks and gives you the difference, which would be the amount you will further save annually.

Technically what Mint does is the following:

Once you're signed in to Mint, you add your current banks by identifying the banks (from the list provided) and giving the necessary user ID and password for those banks.
Mint signs on to your banks and pulls out the transactions, each line item.
Mint automatically classifies the transactions by standard categories (restaurant, grocery, etc.). For example, Costco line items are categorized under Grocery; while Costco Gas line items are under Gas/ Fuel.
Mint creates pie and bar charts based on categories, amount, date, and bank.
Mint compares your bank's rates with its current set of other banks' rates and computes for the annual difference -- the amount you'll save prospectively if you'll change or open new bank accounts.
Mint compares your spending cost with the average user's spending cost.

Currently, however, it only integrates with US banks. If you would like support for another country, go and campaign here.

Yahoo Search Improves

I noticed upon opening a new tab in IE 6.0 that the Yahoo Search page, which is the default opener, has shown a cleaner web page. It has an option to add a site URL.

I tried searching for my name and the results page even has an option to "explore" search with suggested terms. It seems that these related terms were indexed via tags from other sites.

Here's the Yahoo search result.

There is an option to refine your search by clicking on "explore concepts" button (highlighted in red in above image.)

In comparison, Google search has sponsored links on the right hand area of the screen; Yahoo does not have any. While Ask search has four (4) advertising items in the main screen before results are shown. Google though has about 30% more results compared to Yahoo. Ask has about 10% of Google's.

The explore concept option of Yahoo is cool.

Bedroom Call Center

Home-based remote work for call centers to increase by 375% by 2012.

The trend for call centre workers to be based from home is set to increase rapidly over the next five years as businesses look to cut customer service costs.

There are currently around 47,000 home-based outsourced call centre workers working 20 hours per week or more globally - predominantly in the US - and Datamonitor predicts this will rise to almost 224,000 by 2012.

The different demographic profile of home-based agents is one of the reasons companies are going down this route. They tend to be older and have more work experience than typical call centre workers, have higher customer satisfaction levels and lower attrition rates, according to vendors of home-based agent services.

The main industry sectors embracing the home call-centre agent model are healthcare, insurance, technology, tourism and travel.

Business From a Closet

Every morning I wake up at 4:30, brush my teeth, and head to the office wearing pajamas. I don't travel far - my desk is in my bedroom's walk-in closet.
My husband, Tom, and I started our 12-employee firm, Atlantic Infra-red (atlanticinfra-red.com), in 2002 out of our home in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. We own five trucks equipped with infrared technology, which we use to restore asphalt surfaces, mostly on heavily traveled roads. Our revenues hit $1.2 million in 2006.
The construction business starts early in the morning - by 6:30 I'm on the phone talking to clients and directing employees in the field. I hold most meetings at the kitchen table, but if we need access to paperwork, we move upstairs to the closet. No one really likes being there. There's no air conditioning, and only one visitor at a time can fit, sitting on a kitchen stool. To limit clutter, I do almost everything on my laptop.
When employees first see my closet, they laugh. Since our trucks cost $100,000 each, they expect my office to be top of the line. They walk in and say, "Oh, my God. You really work here? There's no window!" But I don't care - it's cheap! Why waste money on office rental? Plus, I get to be home with my two young kids.

Google Presentation + Reader Search

Thank you Google! Finally a presentation tool to complete the basic suite of Google office applications, online and free.

I created a sample presentation here. The application is easy to use and has the basic functions to create a decent presentation material. It has preset themes and is consistent with other google docs' sharing and publishing options. Currently there are fifteen (15) themes and I hope there will be some facility to add more user generated themes in the future.

This is useful for consultants like myself who can create presentation, training, marketing, or other related materials online and share it with customers or users.

I checked Gmail if it can save powerpoint documents as Gdocs but the function is not there yet. Perhaps Google can add this feature, which is available for spreadsheets and documents. Suave.

I'm also happy with the addition of the google search within Google Reader. Finally a powerful search function to look for posts within a feed or blog. Husay!

Blogging II

What has changed?

I've been playing around with posts and templates. I moved some posts to other blogs I created, that is, for Iligan related postings I recreated them in CMonIligan.blogspot.com. Ditto postings related to business, technology, consulting, and perhaps more if necessary.

I played around with templates in Blogger. Previously I thought I can only use two column templates as made available by Blogger. I googled and found three column templates that you can use by tweaking your current template or use preset three column templates, but you'll have to trust the source on this one.

I also created a blog by Wordpress and Typepad. Wordpress is more flexible in terms of template usage. The blog CMonTech and CMonBusiness are Wordpress managed. Wordpress has a dashboard that allows you to see your postings from your different W-blogs. Management of pictures and videos is quite different. I have never successfully embedded a video yet.

You will need some CSS skills though to tweak your template. It's not as straightforward as Blogger. So this is an area to learn and do.

I started to add links to other personal sites found at the right hand area with title CM Links and, in the process, found the service Spock. It’s a person search facility that allows for multiple tagging criteria. It’s easy to use it’s like a game. I noticed that LinkedIn members are preloaded.

(By the way, this post was interrupted by Blogger access issues and some paragraphs were deleted, which sucked. So I will be looking for offline editors that can interface with Blogger.)

Typepad has already charged me $5 for this month. Since my blog CMon.Typepad is only experimental, I may want to remove this in the future. Typepad has a clean user interface and is probably most user friendly.

The idea to have multiple blogs for different categories for me is again experimental. I may want to revert to a single blog for all postings that will show notes from serious to trivial. I find that awkward but we’ll see.

Well, it’s fun. So many blogs to read.
