Daí veio o toque de mestre. Não sei se ele pretendia fazer um exame de toque no queridíssimo B., mas este foi instruído a ficar de quatro e abaixar a cueca. E lá se foi o dedo do médico, explorando os recônditos retais do ricaço, quem sabe penalizado pelas indiscrições brochísticas na casa de tolerância. B., até então caladíssimo, de repente gritava, urrava. Com certeza as meninas não faziam isso nele.

No fim das contas, o médico prescreveu o milagroso remédio que somente a medicina de primeiro mundo dos Estados Unidos poderia produzir. Eu podia até ouvir um drum-roll. Deu uma caixa de amostra, e eu, sempre muito enxerido, examinei qual era o poderoso fármaco que daria mais algumas dezenas de anos ao B., e quem sabe, algum prazer às profissionais. Era ácido acetil salicílico. Virei para o médico, e disse em inglês, com um ar indignado “o senhor prescreveu aspirina???”. Sua cínica resposta foi um curto “sim, não há nada mais que posso prescrever.” Foi o fim da consulta.

Na área da recepção, veio a continha. Mil dólares!!! B. tirou suas fresquinhas notas de cem, e pagou sem chiar, com a consciência de que sua vida seria salva pela medicina ianque.

Andei com eles de volta ao Park Lane, onde encontramos a filha. Esta era um entojo, a antipatia personificada, o que pior podia ser oferecido por residentes da Vieira Souto. B. queria afogar as mágoas numa casa da chá que também ficava ao lado do hotel, e daí veio meu sofrimento. Receber US$75.00 do endinheirado empresário foi difícil. No one, really. You are on your own! AI translation is known for “hallucinations”, whether the project is going from English into a foreign language, or vice-versa. So, having a document translated by AI is tantamount to getting medical, accounting, nutrition, physical therapy and real estate advice without the aid of a professional.

At the time it sounded like a good idea. Why spend US$250.00 translating a simple contract when you can get it for free with AI tools such as google, linguee, microsoft, chatgpt, etc.? You say “the translator is using AI to do it, anyhow. I will buy myself some good wine, instead.”

Let me just give you an example. I was editing a petition that was translated by AI, from English to Spanish. Around page 16 of 25, the petition mentioned several accounts, defining them. One of the accounts, M***** L**** (a known and reputable securities firm), was abbreviated as “ML Account”. Guess what AI did? It translated “ML Account” into “MONEY LAUNDERING ACCOUNT”, not once, but FIVE TIMES. Given the petition was going to be submitted in litigation it would certainly cause huge problems. It is a good thing the client hired me to edit the petition, and I caught this mistake, as well as several others.

Let us say the translation was submitted without editing, and the account holder was investigated or accused of money laundering activities. Do you think the AI platform (run by one of the top Silicon Valley firms, by the way) could be held liable for any expenses and inconvenience? Not really. You are on your own. These platforms all come with disclaimers that clearly exempt them from any liability, so it is used at your own risk.

Additionally, these platforms do not certify the translations. Sure, you may get a sympathetic notary and a clueless individual to certify it for you, but again, the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate will be free of any wrongdoing, the best you can do is hold the notary and the clueless friend accountable.

Therefore, it is not a good idea to have sensitive or even the simplest of documents translated by AI, because the output is not guaranteed. In my experience, people trust AI too much and believe it is perfect, so they do not even read the final text. Plus, many people trust it blindly, unable to understand the translated text.

As with anything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages to both options.

The important question would be, do they honor the Per Page price?

This is an obvious bait and switch technique. Although these Per Page companies advertise in google and bing the low per page price, it is conditional to the number of words on the page, usually anywhere from 120 to 250. The trouble is, many documents have a larger number of words per page, take for instance the most modern version of the Brazilian birth certificate, which can now have as many as 470 words (by comparison, older versions had 170 words).

Additionally, they insist clients send full documents, including stamps in the back. You might have guessed it: the 10-word stamp will constitute a page, so right away the cost is doubled, and you are paying US$2.25 per word.

Others charge extra for notary, paper document and shipping service charges, in addition to the postal charges. So, very quickly the US$22.50 per page document becomes US$ 85.00.

As for more complex documents, such as Court judgments, the situation is even worse. Let us say you have a very dense 10-page judgment, single space. Yes and no.

Let me explain.

To be sure that a translation will be accepted as certified, it should be properly certified by the translator, and his/her signature must be notarized.

A notary cannot notarize his own signature. So, if a document has been translated by somebody who happens to be a notary and is a qualified translator, his/her signature must be notarized by another notary.

If the notary is doing the translation, signing and notarizing his/her own signature, there are a couple of options. a) The notary knows he/she cannot do it, and likely the document will be refused, so he/she is being dishonest. b) If the notary does not know he/she cannot self-notarize a document, then he/she is a bad notary, that does not know notarial law.

Should I hire a company that uses standard table templates for birth certificate translations?

In a nutshell, no.

Usually, a standard template (a one size-fits-all table template, if you may) is used by people who are not qualified translators, such as multiservice companies. They simply create a table with name of person, date of birth, place of birth, names of parents, and other data they seem important, and fill it in. Such templates often miss out important information which is checked by the receiving authority (mainly USCIS) and results in the rejection of the cheap translation. You have simply wasted money.

Additionally, these translations are often self-certified by a notary who “prepared” the translation. This is also improper. A notary cannot certify their own signature, resulting in the rejection of the cheap translation. You have simply wasted money.

Rejection of a translation usually slows down processes, resulting in more costs and wait-time. Additionally, they may raise an unwanted and unnecessary red flag for the case.

Some considerations on Birth certificate translations

In many countries birth certificates are standard documents.

In some countries, however, they come in multiple forms:

a) Birth certificates from Venezuela come in multiple forms, from a single handwritten document, to a form, to a document spanning multiple pages (with SAREN payment receipt, legalization, handwritten and typed document text, legalizations and apostil. Therefore, a quote request is always required.

b) Brazilian birth certificates have evolved over the years. Older documents are simple, and latter documents have been issued in a form. These forms seem to be changed every couple of years. Additionally, Brazilian law also allows a civil registry in one state to issue a paper (or digital) document from another. This may result in refusal of document in the U.S.A. Additionally, for USCIS cases a CERTIDÃO DE NASCIMENTO DE INTEIRO TEOR (FULL TEXT BIRTH CERTIFICATE) may be requested. This is a narrative document, which differs from the form-based documents usually issued by most civil registries.

c) Cuban birth certificates come in two formats. One is a short form, front and back, the other one comes in a regular size page, with information printed in one side only. The presented information is the same. If you have the shorter version, both front and back must be translated.

d) Older Soviet era birth certificates usually come in a shorth form presented as a simple booklet. These documents were issued in all former Republics, the documents being issued in both Russian and the Republic’s language. The documents are handwritten and often impossible to read, requiring assistance from the client.

e) Documents written in an alphabet other than the Latin alphabet require transliteration. As words can be transliterated in different forms, it is necessary for the client to provide the correct transliteration used, to ensure consistency. This does not apply only to Cyrillic, Greek names can also be transliterated in different versions.

f) Mexican birth certificates also come in different formats, depending in the State where issued.

g) European Union birth certificates are also issued for all countries who are member of the EU, written in French and the country’s official language.

h) American birth certificates usually come in short and long forms. Before submitting the document for a quote, check whether the long form is required. U.S. birth certificates are state, rather than Federal documents, so they vary from State to State.

i) Argentine birth certificates tend to be handwritten. Some handwriting can be difficult to read, so client assistance is required.

j) Birth certificates often come with incorrect data, such as misspelling of parents, grandparents and place names. We have also seen mistaken genders and dates. We cannot make any corrections: authorities check the information in originals and may reject the translation if it does not match the original.

The last thing humanity needed was another fresh water intensive process, and that is what widespread generative AI is. ChatG*T alone allegedly uses 39 million gallons of fresh water a day, to cool down its servers. It is just one of a large number of AI systems. These are just estimates, btw. Additionally, generating a single 5-sec AI video consumes energy equivalent to running a microwave for 3.5 hours. More complex tasks require much more. Most energy production, including oil, require huge water intakes at some step, so increasing electricity demand is also putting stress in fresh water supply. That is another horror story altogether. You see, you can live without food for quite a bit, not without water. The new generation loves to exercise and is correctly told to hydrate. You are talking about hundreds of millions training daily and drinking more water than usual. Additionally, almost every manufacturing process requires large freshwater quantities. Then there is agriculture and livestock breeding, which also require large quantities of water. The world's surface is made up mostly of water. So, you say, what is the problem? Well only 3% is fresh water, a lot of it still tied in glaciers. Saline water is useless for almost every human need: it cannot be drank, cannot be used in industrial processes, cannot be used to cool AI servers. Seawater is too corrosive and has different properties than fresh water. Desalinating seawater also demands a lot of electricity and energy. In context, AI consumes about 4 liters (a little over a gallon) to do a simple 1,000-word translation. At the top of my game I was able to translate 10k words a day, which would mean 40 gallons of water! I DO NOT DRINK 40 GALLONS OF WATER A DAY... Do the math. Multiply by billions, and you may conclude that this will eventually become a problem. Unless new chips and new servers that consume little energy are invented REAL FAST, we are again heading for a crisis of humongous proportions. Don't make this political. This is pure fact and common sense. I suppose that powers that be do not realize that Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations was predicated in the concept of scarcity of resources. I guess we should all stop taking showers, flushing, watering the plants, washing the cars. Halting eating activities is also a great idea. Doing the laundry is also wasteful: you are better off doing a new caricature or avatar.

ARE WE BEING DUPED INTO THINKING AI IS THE NOVELTY OF THE YEAR?

This is a strange world we are living in. Even garbage collection companies are now claiming to use AI! I kid you not.

Everybody is in, just like during Y2K, ISO Standards, the dot com craze, Carbon credits, SEO, blockchain, the cloud. A tsunami of AI claims has appeared suddenly, as if this were something new. Coaches, authors, pundits, advertising agencies, the media, seminar promoters are reeling in the bucks, most are not really offering much but smoke and screen, but everybody is feeling modern and signing up.

Digital sound sampling has been around since the 80s. Intelligent phone systems have been around for a while. Good old Alexa was launched in 2014! Google is based on AI since day one, only the word algorithm is not all that sexy. Image altering cell phone filters have been available for a long time. What is Photoshop but AI? Health coverage decisions have been made by AI for many years. Decisions on prioritizing social media posts have been made by Facebook, Twitter, etc since they came about. Who do you think feeds you playlists on Spotify and youtube? Also, who do you think calculates Uber prices since 2010? Finally, translation AI has not improved all that much in the last 20 years, despite the hype.

The list goes on.

You get the point. There is nothing new about AI, it is not as innovative as purported to be. In fact, the phrase AI slop has been coined back in 2020, when offensive (for Christians) shrimp Jesus memes proliferated on the internet. That was 5 long years ago.

What changed?

The only noticeable change is that in the last few months most software now come with intrusive AI assistants, in some cases difficult or impossible to remove. In fact, since these started appearing on free and subscription sites alike, computer performance has been dreadful. Simply turning on a computer in the morning can be challenging, until AI sleuths have settled down. What will be done with such information is a matter of concern.

PRONOUN MIXUPS: ANOTHER AI TRANSLATION SPECIALTY

It does not take much to realize that not all languages are similar. Sounds, alphabets, intonations are just some of the obvious differences between Russian and Chinese, for instance. But there is much more than that, much feared grammar. Some languages have articles, others don’t, some have declensions, many do not, several have tons of verb tenses, others have simple verb structures, so on, so forth. One area where AI translation often messes up is personal pronouns.

Take for instance Portuguese and Spanish, two languages where AI wreaks real havoc in the pronoun area.

I have handled many AI edits to and from these languages, and AI makes a real mess of things, which can be troublesome in litigation documents, for instance. AI does have a problem reading context and seems to regard the use of gender in Romance languages a futile nuisance. This can even cause legal issues, when pronouns are wrongly translated and seem to identify the incorrect party. The longer the text, the worst the problem.

That is why a professional, experienced and thorough editor should be retained to edit any text translated by AI.
