Carly Fiorina Proves She is Clear Choice for U.S. Senate

MORAGA, CA – Carly for California Campaign Manager Marty Wilson tonight issued the following statement after the California candidates for U.S. Senate concluded their first debate. The debate was hosted by KTVU, the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED and held at St. Mary’s college in Moraga, California:

“Tonight’s debate highlighted the stark contrasts in the race for California’s U.S. Senate seat between an out-of-touch, out-of-reach career politician who has spent the last 28 years in Washington championing job-killing policies that have failed to deliver results for the people of California and a proven leader who has firsthand experience creating jobs, managing budgets and meeting payrolls in the real world.

“Carly proved to voters not only the breadth and depth of her knowledge on a broad range of policy issues, but also her laser focus on the priorities of all Californians: job creation and economic growth. Carly brings to the race a fresh perspective on these most pressing challenges, and as a U.S. senator, she will fight to take Washington back, make it listen and make it work.”

During the debate, Fiorina’s campaign issued responses to many of the false attacks launched against her by Barbara Boxer as well as fact checks on Boxer’s claims, noting that while Boxer may claim one thing, her record as a career politician tells a distinctly different story.

DEBATE FACT CHECK #9

Boxer Attacked On …
Carly’s Views on the Issues

But The Record Shows…
Boxer Is An “Unremitting Activist” Who Pushes For Liberal Causes That Have Little Chance Of Becoming Law:

Boxer Acts As “Unremitting Activist” Pushing Ideological Proposals With Little Chance Of Passing Into Law. “While some politicians pride themselves on their ability to horse-trade and compromise in pursuit of legislation, she usually operates as an unremitting activist, offering proposals that have no chance of adoption just to make a point about how things ought to be.” (Adriel Bettelheim, “Wage Hike Fight One Of Many For A Leading Liberal,” Congressional Quarterly, 4/5/04)

Boxer’s Brash, Partisan Style Often Hurts Her Ability To Achieve Real, Tangible Results. “If Boxer’s absolutism raises the profile of her top issues — women’s health, the environment, corporate fraud and the oppression of Afghan women — it can also hurt her chances of success. Her unfashionable adherence to liberal tenets often does not play well in the clubby Senate. Many times she does not get the backing she needs to get her proposals written into law, and her hard-line amendments win little support from Republicans and sometimes even other Democrats.” (Adriel Bettelheim, “Wage Hike Fight One Of Many For A Leading Liberal,” Congressional Quarterly, 4/5/04)

Few List Boxer As A Senate Insider “Who Can Craft The Bills And Engage In The Work Of Pulling Together A Coalition To Get It Passed.” “Boxer has kept her high public profile since being elected to the Senate in November 1992. . . . Few people, however, would list Boxer as one of the Senate insiders who craft the bills and engage in the work of pulling together a coalition to get it passed.” (John Wildermuth, “As An Outspoken Senator, Boxer Invites Controversy,” The San Francisco Chronicle, 10/23/04)

“[B]oxer Has Been One Of California’s Most Polarizing Figures, Seen By Most Voters In Shades Of Black Or White.” (Mark Z. Barabak, “Boxer’s Strategy Is To Stake Out Middle Ground,” Los Angeles Times, 8/27/98)

Boxer’s Brash Partisan Style Is Unlike The Style Of Dianne Feinstein:

Unlike Feinstein, Boxer Has Little Desire For The Compromises It Takes To “Get Things Done” In The Senate. “Unlike California’s other senator, fellow Democrat Dianne Feinstein, Boxer has little appetite for the philosophical trade-offs necessary to get things done in a Senate narrowly divided between the parties.” (Adriel Bettelheim, “Wage Hike Fight One Of Many For A Leading Liberal,” Congressional Quarterly, 4/5/04)

Feinstein’s Thoughtful Legislative Style Is “In Contrast To Boxer.” “In contrast to Boxer, Feinstein is a politician worth checking back with — regularly — to see if she has changed her position on an issue. Her complexity and need to have every detail fit her own internal order before she signs off is a trait that can leave colleagues baffled.” (Nina J. Easton, “Forget The Thelma And Louise Thing,” Los Angeles Times, 11/19/95)

Until 2008, Boxer Voted With Democrats More Than 96 Percent Of The Time; Feinstein Sided With Democrats Only 87.9 Percent Of The Time. “From 1993 through 2008, Boxer voted with the Democrats on 96.1 percent of ‘party unity’ votes. Feinstein voted that way 87.9 percent of the time.” (Peter Urban, “Review Of Senate Votes Shows Boxer And Feinstein Toe Party Line,” Gannett News Service, 7/10/10)

Stamford University’s Simon Jackman: “And Over Her Career, Boxer Has Been To The Left Of Feinstein.” (Peter Urban, “Review Of Senate Votes Shows Boxer And Feinstein Toe Party Line,” Gannett News Service, 7/10/10)

Boxer Mentioned…
Her Record On Terrorism

But The Record Shows…
Boxer Supported Extending More Legal Rights For Terrorist Detainees:

Boxer Voted To Strike Provisions In The Military Commissions Act Of 2006 That Would Have Limited “The Rights Of Detainees To Challenge Their Detention In U.S. Courts.” (S. 3930, CQ Vote #255: Rejected 48-51: R 4-50; D 43-1; I 1-0, 9/28/06, Boxer Voted Yea)

Boxer Voted Against The 2006 Military Commissions Act, Which Allowed The Government To Proceed With The Prosecution Of High-Level Detainees. (S. 3930, CQ Vote #259: Passed 65-34: R 53-1; D 12-32; I 0-1, 9/28/06, Boxer Voted Nay)

Boxer Supported Legislation To “Grant Detainees And Enemy Combatants The Right To Petition For Habeas Corpus In The U.S. Circuit Court Of Appeals For The District Of Columbia, Provided A Review Tribunal Has Been Conducted.” (S. 1042, CQ Vote #324: Rejected 44-54: R 4-50; D 39-4; I 1-0, 11/15/05, Boxer Voted Yea)

Boxer Has Supported Plans To Bring Guantanamo Detainees To U.S. Soil:

“Sen. Barbara Boxer Sees No Reason That The United States Wouldn’t Be Able To Safely Handle Incarcerating The Detainees On U.S. Soil.” (Sean Lengell, “Lawmakers Pressing Obama For Gitmo Plan,” The Washington Times, 5/25/09)

Boxer “Bristled At The Notion” That The U.S. Could Not Safely Handle The Guantanamo Detainees On U.S. Soil. “A bipartisan chorus of Capitol Hill lawmakers Sunday called on President Obama to unveil a plan for dealing with the terrorism suspects held at the U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba – a campaign promise he has yet to fulfill. ‘We’re saying, Mr. President, give us the plan,’ said Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat, on CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ program. Mrs. Boxer bristled at the notion that the United States wouldn’t be able to safely handle incarcerating Guantanamo’s 240 or so prisoners on U.S. soil. ‘We already have 350 terrorists in the United States. So, clearly, we’ve been handling it,’ she said. ‘But, still and all, we are worried, and we want to see what the plan is.’ She added that many of the prisoners may be sent to other countries, or even executed in the United States. ‘Maybe we wind up with 10 or 15 or 20 or five – we don’t know yet,’ she said.” (Sean Lengell, “Lawmakers Pressing Obama For Gitmo Plan,” The Washington Times, 5/25/09)

But Boxer Dodged A Question About Whether She Would Support Bringing The Detainees To California. KING: “Bring some to California, are you comfortable with that?” BOXER: “Well, we only have one maximum security prison in California, and it’s right now overbooked. That’s the case.” (CNN’s “State Of The Union,” 5/24/09)

Boxer Has Received Low Grades For Her National Security Voting Record:

Keep America Safe Gave Boxer A Grade Of “F” For Her Voting Record From 2001 To 2010. (Keep America Safe Website, www.keepamericasafe.com, Accessed 8/31/10)

Boxer Mentioned…
Economic Impact Of Global-Warming Legislation

But The Record Shows…
Boxer’s Cap-And-Trade Legislation Will Impose New Onerous Regulations And Additional Costs On American Families And Companies:

Boxer’s Proposal Will Result In $9.9 Trillion In GDP Loss, Annual Job Losses In Excess Of 2.5 Million, And Increased Costs In Energy, Goods, And Services For Families In Excess Of $3,000. “Should S. 1733 become law, Americans can expect the following to occur between enactment and the year 2035 (all figures are adjusted for inflation): Inflation-adjusted losses to gross domestic product (GDP) of $9.9 trillion; More than $4.6 trillion in higher energy taxes; Job losses exceeding 2.5 million for some years; Annual family-of-four energy costs rising by $1,000, including a gasoline price increase of more than $1.20 per gallon; Annual family-of-four energy costs plus increased cost of goods and services totaling more than $3,000…” (“What Boxer–Kerry Will Cost The Economy,” The Heritage Foundation, 1/26/10)

Boxer’s Proposal Would Increase Gasoline Prices By 45 Percent And Residential Electricity Prices By 72 Percent. “If the CO2 caps proposed in S. 1733 are enacted, Americans can expect to see the following impacts relative to the baseline case (all dollar values are adjusted for inflation to the 2009 price level): GDP will drop by an aggregate $9.9 trillion between 2012 and 2035. … On a family-of-four basis, the cumulative loss in net worth will exceed $40,000 by 2030. Gasoline prices will rise by 45 percent. Residential electricity prices will rise by 72 percent.” (“What Boxer–Kerry Will Cost The Economy,” The Heritage Foundation, 1/26/10)

Cap-And-Trade Will “Destroy Jobs And Erode Income” In California:

According To A Beacon Hill Institute Analysis Cap-And-Trade Legislation Will “Destroy Jobs And Erode Income.” “Specific proposals that several Western states, including California, would implement to comply with a proposed cap-and-trade carbon emissions control pact would destroy jobs and erode income, according to a report co-released by an economics institute.” (The Beacon Hill Institute, “Cap-And-Trade Scheme Will Cost California Jobs,” Press Release, 3/23/09)

According To The Legislative Analyst Office, California’s AB32 Is A Job Killer. “[T]he effects of the SP (Scoping Plan) on California jobs are difficult to accurately predict but would be mixed, with gains in some occupations and industries (including so-called ‘green’ jobs) and losses in others (primarily involving fossil fuel-related energy production). On balance, however, we believe that the aggregate net jobs impact in the near term is likely to be negative, even after recognizing that many of the SP’s programs phase in over time.” (Mac Taylor, Legislative Analyst, Letter To Hon. Dave Cogdill, 3/4/10)

Carly’s Record Shows…

Carly Favors A Comprehensive Energy Policy Instead Of Boxer’s Cap-And-Trade Plan:

Carly Opposes Cap-And-Trade And Will Pursue A Comprehensive Energy Policy In The Senate. “Instead of pursuing Barbara Boxer’s cap-and-trade bill, developing a comprehensive energy policy for the country that relies on the development of energy from many sources, including clean coal, nuclear power, wind, solar and increased access to domestic sources of petroleum.” (Carly For California Website, www.carlyforca.com, Accessed 9/1/10)

Boxer Mentioned…
Same-Sex Marriage

But The Record Shows…
Boxer Has Offered Conflicting Statements On Same-Sex Marriage, Touting “Equal Rights” While Supporting Marriage Only For Men And Women:

Boxer Called The Federal Court’s Decision To Overturn Proposition 8 A “Historic Decision” And “A Step Toward Equal Rights.” BOXER: “This historic decision is a step forward in the march toward equal rights and reflects a growing legal consensus that marriage equality is protected by the U.S. Constitution.” (Sen. Barbara Boxer, “Boxer Statement On District Court Decision On Proposition 8,” Press Release, 8/4/10)

Boxer On Same-Sex Marriage In 2004: “I Believe In Domestic Partnerships With Full Rights And Responsibilities As Marriage.” BOXER: “On the issue of gay marriage, I voted against the constitutional amendment that was very—I thought—being used as a political issue, as a wedge issue. I believe in domestic partnerships with full rights and responsibilities as marriage.” (Sen. Barbara Boxer, Remarks At A Campaign Debate, Los Angeles, CA, 8/10/04)

In 1996, Boxer Claimed She Supported “Marriage For Men And Women” And Domestic Partnerships For Same-Sex Couples. “At the same time, however, Boxer said she supports ‘marriage for men and women’ and domestic partnerships ‘as a way for people of the same sex to have a long-lasting partnership.’” (Carolyn Lochhead, “Boxer Won’t Vote For Gay Marriage Bill — Calls It ‘Cruel’,” San Francisco Chronicle, 7/18/96)

Boxer Was One Of Only A Handful Of Senators Who Opposed The Bipartisan Defense Of Marriage Act:

Boxer Was One Of Only 14 Senators Who Voted Against The Bipartisan Defense Of Marriage Act. (H.R. 3396, CQ Vote #280: Passed 85-14: R 53-0; D 32-14, 9/10/96, Boxer Voted Nay)S

The Defense Of Marriage Act Allowed States To Disregard Same-Sex Marriages Recognized By Other States And Defined Marriage As A Union Between A Man And Woman For Federal Purposes. “The Defense of Marriage Act passed the House on Friday in a landslide vote and has strong bipartisan backing in the Senate. Designed to undercut a pending Hawaii court decision likely to legalize gay marriages, it would permit states to disregard gay marriages recognized by other states. It would also define marriage as a heterosexual union for such federal purposes as Social Security and immigration law.” (Carolyn Lochhead, “Boxer Won’t Vote For Gay Marriage Bill — Calls It ‘Cruel’,” San Francisco Chronicle, 7/18/96)

Carly’s Record Shows…

Carly Supports Domestic Partnerships For Same-Sex Couples:

Carly Supports Giving Same-Sex Couples Equal Benefits Through Civil Unions. “On gay marriage, [Fiorina] said she ‘believes in the sanctity of a marriage between a man and a woman,’ but favors equal benefits for homosexuals through civil unions.” (Paul Anderson, “Fiorina Announces Senate Bid,” City News Service, 11/4/09)

Boxer Attacked On…

Carly’s Record At Hewlett-Packard

But Carly’s Record Shows…

Since Carly Fiorina’s Departure From HP, Experts Have Credited Her With Making HP A Stronger Company:

Industry Experts Have Claimed That HP “Desperately Needed Someone Like” Fiorina. “But while analysts praise Hurd’s low-key style, many are quick to credit Fiorina for laying the groundwork. She was the biggest proponent of changing HP’s culture, and although her hard-charging style ultimately worked against her, HP desperately needed someone like her, said Roger L. Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates.” (Rachel Konrad, “HP Is Hurd’s Now, But Ousted Fiorina Gets Some Credit For Revival,” The Associated Press, 8/17/06)

Former Intel Chairman Craig Barrett On Carly: “[Carly] Deserves Great Credit For Her Actions While CEO Of HP.” “Carly Fiorina, the architect of the HP-Compaq merger and now a candidate for U.S. Senate, deserves great credit for her actions while CEO of HP. She understood the challenges of the marketplace, the dangers of the status quo, and the need for companies to move forward with bold actions to ensure their success.” (Craig Barrett, Op-Ed, “History Straightens Out Facts,” San Jose Mercury News, 4/4/10)

•	BARRETT: “Today, HP is a stronger company because of Carly Fiorina’s bold action.” (Craig Barrett, Op-Ed, “History Straightens Out Facts,” San Jose Mercury News, 4/4/10)

Under Fiorina’s Leadership, HP’s Revenues Doubled And The Company Added Thousands Of Employees:

During Fiorina’s Tenure As CEO, Hewlett-Packard’s Revenues More Than Doubled From Approximately $42.4 Billion In 1999 To Approximately $86.7 Billion In 2005. (Hewlett-Packard, HP Annual Report, 2000; Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2006)

During Fiorina’s Tenure As CEO, Hewlett-Packard Increased Its Workforce By Tens Of Thousands Of Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2005; Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 1999)

•	In October 2005, HP Had Approximately 150,000 Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2005)

•	In October 1999, HP Had Approximately 84,400 Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 1999)

HP’s Employment At The End Of Carly’s Tenure Even Exceeded The 145,000 Combined Workforce At HP And Compaq At The Time Of The Merger. “Based on both companies’ last four reported fiscal quarters, the new HP would have approximate pro forma assets of $56.4 billion, annual revenues of $87.4 billion and annual operating earnings of $3.9 billion. It would also have operations in more than 160 countries and over 145,000 employees.” (Benjamin Pimentel, “Wall Street Frowns On HP-Compaq Deal,” San Francisco Chronicle, 9/4/01)

The Compaq Merger Has Been Credited With Driving HP’s Subsequent Success:

Former Intel Chairman Craig Barrett On The Compaq Merger: “An Unqualified Success.” “The merger of HP and Compaq was an unqualified success. It helped transform HP into the largest computer manufacturer in the world and provided a strong foundation for HP’s current success under its very capable management team.” (Craig Barrett, Op-Ed, “History Straightens Out Facts,” San Jose Mercury News, 4/4/10)

Boxer Attacked On …

Immigration Reform

But The Record Shows…

Boxer Claims To Support “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” But Opposed A Guest Worker Program In 2007:

Boxer Supported The 2006 Comprehensive Immigration Legislation, Which Included A Guest Worker Program. (S. 2611, CQ Vote #157: Passed 62-36: R 23-32; D 38-4; I 1-0, 3/25/06, Boxer Voted Yea)

But In 2007, Boxer Joined With The AFL-CIO In Opposing A Guest Worker Program As Part Of Immigration Reforms. “But opposition is intensifying to a proposed guest worker program that would allow hundreds of thousands of foreign laborers to take jobs in the U.S. The AFL-CIO labor union and some Democrats — including U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer of California and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota — have allied with conservative immigration hawks led by Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen on this issue. They take a dim view of a guest worker program.” (Mike Sunnucks, “Groups Still At Odds Over Guest Worker Proposal,” Phoenix Business Journal, 6/4/07)

• Boxer Launched A “Direct Assault” On The Guest Worker Program, Calling Guest Workers “A Pool Of Cheap Labor At The Expense Of The American Worker.” BASH: “The first direct assault on a bipartisan immigration proposal is being launched from the left. Democrats trying to torpedo a temporary worker program.” BOXER: “It is a pool of cheap labor at the expense of the American worker.” (CNN’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” 5/22/07)

Dorgan And Boxer Were Partners In Inserting A Poison Pill Amendment To Kill The Guest Worker Program. “Dorgan and his cosponsor, California Democrat Barbara Boxer, said Democrats will offer several additional amendments aimed at modifying the guest worker program.” (Michael Sandler, “Immigration Bill Clears First Hurdle In Senate,” Congressional Quarterly, 5/22/07)

Boxer Claimed She Was “Troubled By The Inclusion Of A Guest Worker Program.” “And liberal senators also balked at a provision in the legislation that would create a guest worker program with no pathway to citizenship, as well as measures that would give visa preference to skilled, educated workers over family members. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., called the bill ‘unworkable and unfair,’ saying she’s ‘troubled by the inclusion of a guest worker program.’” (Gary Martin, “Bush Hasn’t Given Up On Immigration Bill,” San Antonio Express-News, 6/12/07)

Carly’s Record Shows…

Carly Supports Securing The Border And A Guest Worker Program To Support The California’s Industries:

Carly Believes That The Federal Government Must Do Its Job In Securing The Border. FIORINA: “We have to start with the top priority, and the top priority is to secure the border, and that is the federal government’s job. … This is the federal government’s job to secure the border. We need to force the federal [government] to do its job and secure the border and keep the pressure on the Administration.” (KMPH’s “Rob Johnson Show,” 8/4/10)

Carly Supports A Temporary Worker Program To Support Important California Industries Like Agriculture. FIORINA: “Let us get a temporary worker program that works. Because industries like agriculture in California, depend upon a temporary worker program that works and they don’t have one.” (KMPH’s “Rob Johnson Show,” 8/4/10)

Boxer Mentioned …
Federal Aid For Teachers

But The Record Shows…
The Federal Funds Will Face Obstacles, Including School District Calendars And The State Legislature:

It Is “Impossible To Visualize” How California School Districts Will Be Able To Actually Rehire Teachers And Utilize The Federal Funds Before Opening Day Of 2010. “Of the $26 billion, California will get at least $1.2 billion for its schools. But it is impossible to visualize how many districts will be able to rehire teachers, draw up staffing patterns and assign kids to respective classrooms by opening day.” (Louis Freedberg, “Feds To Schools: Check Is Not Yet In The Mail,” California Watch Blog, californiawatch.org, 8/12/10)

The Federal Timeline “Seems To Conflict” With The Timeline Faced By School Districts. “The actual timeline outlined in the law seems to conflict with the compressed timeline school districts face. The state has up to 30 days to apply from enactment, and the federal government then has up to 15 days to distribute the funds. Once money flows to the districts, local school boards have to ratify whatever decisions are made on how the funds will be spent.” (Louis Freedberg, “Feds To Schools: Check Is Not Yet In The Mail,” California Watch Blog, californiawatch.org, 8/12/10)

Many California Schools Have Already Started Or Will Start Before Any Federal Money Arrives. “Some schools on year-round schedules are already in session. Others like those on traditional schedules at Natomas Unified near Sacramento already started classes on August 10. Some districts like San Francisco and Fresno will open their doors on August 16 – next Monday. West Contra Costa Unified will open on August 24.” (Louis Freedberg, “Feds To Schools: Check Is Not Yet In The Mail,” California Watch Blog, californiawatch.org, 8/12/10)

California Legislature Must Also Pass A Budget Or Authorizing Legislation Before Federal Funds Can Be Sent To The Schools. “On top of that, the Legislature is still gridlocked on coming up with a budget for the current fiscal year. Before federal funds can be sent to schools, Department of Finance officials tell me, the Legislature has to either have approved a budget, or pass special legislation authorizing expenditure of the funds.” (Louis Freedberg, “Feds To Schools: Check Is Not Yet In The Mail,” California Watch Blog, californiawatch.org, 8/12/10)

California Legislature Has Not Passed Legislation To Provide Schools With The Federal Aid. “[S]teinberg said he agrees with that position. He pointed to urgency legislation that he and Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez introduced last week that would provide schools the money before the budget is passed.” (Kevin Yamamura, “Steinberg: Federal Teacher Funds Not For Budget Relief,” Sacramento Bee’s “Capitol Alert” Blog, blogs.sacbee.com, 8/26/10)

Boxer Mentioned …
Funding For Troops And Veterans

But The Record Shows…
Boxer Opposed Funding For American Troops During Times Of War:

In 2007, Boxer Was One Of Only 14 Senators To Vote Against Supplemental Funding For The War In Iraq And Afghanistan. (H.R. 2206, CQ Vote #181: Passed 80-14: R 42-3; D 37-10; I 1-1, 5/24/07, Boxer Voted Nay and Feinstein Voted Yea)

NOTE: The Iraq Emergency Spending Bill That Boxer Voted Against Provided:
$1.6 Billion For Body Armor
$2.4 Billion To Help Combat IEDs
$3 Billion For Mine Resistant Vehicles
$3 Billion For Defense Health Programs, Including Funding For The Treatment Of Soldiers Suffering From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Brain Trauma Injury
(House And Senate Committees On Appropriations, “Summary Of The Fiscal 2007 Supplemental Funding Legislation,” Press Release, 5/24/07)

In 2003, Boxer Was One Of Just 12 Senators To Oppose The $87 Billion Supplemental Appropriation For The Reconstruction Of Iraq And Afghanistan; The Bill Included Funding For Body Armor And Communications Equipment For The Troops. (S. 1689, CQ Vote #400: Passed 87-12: R 50-0; D 37-11; I 0-1, 10/17/03, Boxer Voted Nay and Feinstein Voted Yea; “Highlights Of Iraq, Afghanistan Measures,” The Associated Press, 10/17/03)

The Bill Included Funds For The Maintenance And Operation Of Equipment, Defense Health Programs, And Increased Imminent Danger Pay. (“Highlights Of Iraq, Afghanistan Measures,” The Associated Press, 10/17/03; Senate Republican Policy Committee, “Funding For Our Men And Women In The Armed Forces,” S. 1689, 2/04)

NOTE: The Reconstruction Package Also Included Funds To Help Military Families:
An Increase In The Family Separation Allowance
Funds For The Travel And Transportation Of Family Members Of The Armed Forces Who Are Ill Or Injured As A Result Of Service On Active Duty In Iraq And Afghanistan
Access To The Benefits Of The Family Medical Leave Act For A Spouse, Son, Daughter, Or Parent Of An Employee Who Is A Member Of The Armed Forces.
(Senate Republican Policy Committee, “Funding For Our Men And Women In The Armed Forces,” S. 1689, 2/04)

In 2007, Then-Sen. Joe Biden Attacked Democrats For Opposing Funding For The Troops, Noting That “There’s No Political Point Worth Anybody’s Life Out There.” BIDEN: “So what did some of my colleagues say about why they voted against the money? They said they voted against the money to make a political point. There’s no political point worth my son’s life. There’s no political point worth anybody’s life out there.” (Sen. Joe Biden, Remarks At The Iowa State Fair, Des Moines, IA, 8/15/07)

BIDEN: “I want to ask any of my other colleagues, would they, in fact, vote to cut off the money for those troops to protect them? That’s the right question. This isn’t cutting off the war.
