Woah! That hurt!

Attacking a nicely made garment with sandpaper to age it was awful, ripping it and then spreading black paint to dirty it was gut wrenching. I am a very poor costumer it seems.

Ah La douleur!

Poncer un vêtement tout neuf et fait avec amour, le déchirer et le salir de peinture noire m'a fait mal au coeur.

Je suis une bien piètre costumière il me semble.

Remember Nicolas?

I made Simplicity 7082 for him last year.

He came over in January with a new storyline, an overall green color scheme, a picture of The Joker for inspiration and absolutely no budget! I have agreed to help him out, his company is almost brand new, they need support and costuming is so much fun!

It took me a while to find a cheap and chic solution, but I finally worked it out.

Il est venu en janvier avec son nouveau scénario, vert olive comme couleur principale, une photo du Joker comme inspiration et pas de budget! J'ai accepté de l'aider, parce sa compagnie est toute nouvelle et qu'il a besoin d'encouragement puis faire des costumes, c'est très chouette!

J'ai mis du temps à trouver une solution beau, bon, pas cher, mais j'y suis arrivée.

I am in the process of refashioning a Loden overcoat, it is the right shade of green and is was €15, major bonus points there! I also drafted and made 2 waistcoats this week. One of them will be distressed to show the main character's decrepitude. Spending a day making a brand new garment and then destroying it seems pointless, but getting my hands dirty should be interesting. I have never sanded clothing before!

If you live in Brittany and need some swashbuckling in your life they are young, motivated and for hire. They came over for JrC's b'day last year, they showed the kids how to stage fight, it was a total hoot!

Je rafistole un Loden que j'ai trouvé Au Bon Coin pour €15, c'est vert et c'est pas cher! J'ai dessiné et fabriqué 2 gilets cette semaine. Je vais devoir en maquiller un pour montrer la décrépitude du personnage. Passer une journée à fabriquer un vêtement tout neuf pour le détruire ensuite est étrange mais intéressant. Je n'ai jamais poncé de vêtement avant!

Si vous vivez en Bretagne et que vous avez besoin d'un combat de cap et d'épée, ils sont jeunes, motivés et prêts à être embauchés. Ils sont venus pour l'anniversaire de JrC l'année dernière, ils ont montré aux enfants comment on se bat dans les films et on a rigolé comme des malades.

When my neighbor came over the other day with his favorite pair of pants, lets call them "cargo-harem pants", I was quite surprised that he still had them and that his girlfriend hadn't thrown them out already, well worn is an understatement. But I felt for him, I sure am guilty of hoarding old favorites, so I agreed to copy them.

While I go looking for the right fabric, I thought you might want to see this little construction detail that had me howling with laughter : the fly has a secret pocket for stashing stuff. What?

Yes good folks, there is an invisible zipper in the fly shield. I don't want to know what it's for, but it sure is a couture detail I have never seen before.

He said he has never used it and I don't have to put one in, but I might just for fun.

Les gars, ça gardent et portent leur vêtements très longtemps.

Mais quand mon voisin est venu me voir avec son pantalon favori, on va appeler ça un "sarouel-cargo", j'ai quand même été surprise que sa copine ne l'a pas déjà jeté, ce pantalon est très très usé. Je suis moi-même coupable d'accumulation de vieux trucs et je peux m'identifier alors j'ai accepté de les copier.

Pendant que je vais à la recherche d'un tissu idéal, vous pouvez examiner ce petit détail qui m'a fait hurler de rire : il y a une poche secrète dans la sous patte de la braguette pour y cacher des choses. Quoi?

Oui bonnes gens, il y a une fermeture éclair invisible dans la sous-patte. Je ne veux pas savoir ce qu'on y met, mais je n'avais jamais vu ça avant!

Mon voisin dit qu'il ne l'a jamais utilisé et qu'il n'en veut pas, mais je pense que je vais en mettre une quand même juste pour rigoler.

Machine Stitched Bound Buttonholes

I'm making a housecoat with bound buttonholes.

My current one, made three years ago is my most worn me-made item of all time. I need some change.

The pattern is Simplicity 3592, which I won in Molly's March giveaway (Thanks!). I think it's the perfect shape for that humongous Ikea print I bought a long time ago and never used.

I usually am less finicky on finishing garments that won't see the light of day, so why bother making bound buttonholes instead of machine ones you ask?

One : it was in the pattern instructions. I am quite an obedient seamstress, I do have a tendency to make dresses in the same colour as the pattern envelope!

Two: obviously I need practice! I tried to make them according to Fashion Incubator's method for welts with the paper jig, but there is something in the calculation of the lips and turn of cloth that I can't get quite right on such a small area.

Three : I wanted to try a finish I saw in a coat I bought at H&M some years ago which I have never seen in any blog posts about bound buttonholes, the openings in the facings are machine sewn. I don't know how to do that and I winged it.
This is not a total success so I am not going to write up a tutorial about this, but I thought you might like the idea and try it yourself.

The gist of it is you open up the facing a tad smaller than the buttonhole opening and you stitch the buttonhole in the ditch. Am I making sense?

Had I made the lips in white instead of a contrasting colour, it would be nearly invisible from the outside. Also, I made the opening with a little square of cotton voile which I pushed through but I don't think this method needs it, a square of very small stitches would be fine and less bulky.

I don't like them. They are so sloppy, I might get the seam ripper out, and sew the facings by hand but as this garment will stay house bound, I might just leave them.

Sleepwear is a wonderful place to experiment, all the pressure of making things absolutely perfect is off so you can just enjoy the process. In fact, when I give advice to a beginner, I tell them to make a nightgown first or make the Tofino pyjama pants with Karen. There is no pressure there, your learning mistakes will remain private.

Jr C told me I looked like a pregnant cleaning lady when I tried it on and then I realized it is a pattern for a pregnant person. I might send it to Zoe when I'm finished. (Zoe do you want it? Give me your address.)

Boutonnières Passepoilées à la Machine

Je fais une robe de chambre avec des boutonnières passepoilées.
Celle que j'ai, faite il y a 3 ans est mon vêtement fait main le plus porté de tous les temps, j'ai besoin de changement.
Le patron est Simplicity 3592 que j'ai gagné chez Molly en mars (merci!) et je crois que c'est la forme parfaite pour mettre en valeur ces énormes fleurs achetées chez Ikea il y a un moment mais jamais utilisées.
En général, je porte moins d'attention aux finitions d'un vêtement qui ne verront jamais la lumière du jour alors pourquoi s'embêter à faire des passepoils?
Un : parce que c'était dans les instructions. Je suis assez obéissante à ce sujet, j'ai même tendance à faire des robes de la même couleur que la photo sur l'enveloppe!

Deux : J'ai besoin d'entraînement, c'est évident! J'ai essayé de les faire en utilisant le tutoriel de Fashion Incubator avec le papier plié mais je n'arrive pas bien à calculer le recouvrement sur une si petite surface.

Trois : Je voulais essayer une finition machine dans la parementure des boutonnières comme celle sur un manteau que j'ai acheté chez H&M il y a quelques annnées. Je n'ai jamais vu cette finition expliquée nulle part, on ne peut pas dire d'ailleurs que je sais ce que je fais!
Je ne peux pas franchement dire que c'est un succès alors il ne faut pas vous attendre à un tutoriel, mais j'ai pensé que l'idée vous plairait et que vous pourriez l'essayer.

L'idée, c'est de faire l'ouverture un tout petit peu plus petite que la boutonnière et de la piquer dans la couture. Est-ce que ça vous parle?

Je crois que si j'avais fait le passepoil en blanc, ça ne se verrait presque pas. J'ai aussi fait l'ouverture avec un petit bout de voile de coton mais je ne pense pas en avoir besoin. Je crois qu'une piqûre à tout petits points, ouverte et repassée serait adéquate.

Je ne les aime pas beaucoup, c'est un peu brouillon. Il est possible que je sorte mon découd-vite et que je les finisse à la main, mais comme ce vêtement ne sortira pas de la maison, je vais peut-être les laisser.

Les vêtements d'intérieur sont génial pour expérimenter les nouvelles techniques, on n'a pas la pression du tout parfait. D'ailleurs, quand une débutante me demande, je leur dis de commencer par une chemise de nuit ou de s'inscrire pour faire le pantalon de pyjama Tofino avec Karen. Il n'y a pas de pression, vos erreurs vont rester privées.

Jr C a mentionné quand je l'ai essayé que je ressemble à une femme de ménage enceinte. Et c'est là que je me suis dit : ah! ben oui, c'est un patron de femme enceinte. Je vais peut-être l'envoyer à Zoé quand j'aurai fini.

How To Hem a Full Skirt Without Help

We work alone...most of the time.

And family members have other agendas, I mean if you have managed to convince them to leave you alone while you sew, you can't really ask them to drop everything they are doing to come and help just right now this very minute right?

One of the sewing thing I find very difficult to do all by yourself is to hem a full skirt. I love full skirts, I love fabric, I love wearing tons of fabric. On this particular dress, I wanted a gathered circle skirt with a center pleat, more fabric to wear, more hem to sew, probably all by my own lonesome.

Patternmaking for Fashion Design

While reading up on how to draft such a skirt, I came upon a possible solution for hemming it without help, so I decided to try it out.
In commercial pattern making, they calculate the skirt overhang and draft the pattern pieces accordingly. We can't do that because we don't use the same fabric for each skirt, but I thought if I do the hanging before the sewing, I could then trim the skirt to the right length using the pattern. Would this work?

Before working on the bodice, I basted the skirt and lining pieces at the waist so they wouldn't stretch and hung them with "weights".

The next day, before sewing the skirt together, I placed the pattern pieces on the skirt pieces and I removed the excess. I was very happy with this solution, feeling clever you know, then I had my moment of interstellar emptiness which brought me back down to earth and, the dressed finished, I hemmed as I would any other skirt.

By that I mean, I made 2 rows of stitches about 4cm apart, used them as a pressing guides, pulled on the top row to ease the fullness, pressed again, did a machine blind hem with the accompanying foot and removed the basting.

I'm not sure this would work other fabrics, but with Ikea curtains, which didn't stretch all that much, it did the trick. And I didn't have to wait to hem the skirt, so this dress was finished in a couple of sewing sessions. Almost instant gratification!

The bodice is from Vogue 2512 for which all the fitting work was done and the skirt is a modified Simplicity 8943, which I kind of messed up. I have all this fabric in the front and much less in the back, I really should have put a pleat there too to balance it out. Call this a designer newbie mistake.

I can live with it as it's a much less visible mistake than an uneven hem, the next full skirted dress should be better.

As always, when I do something like this, I feel like I have made an important discovery that will revolutionize the home sewing business, only to discover that it's standard practice in other corner of the world. If you try it out, please let me know how this worked for you and if we, as member of the sewing collective, can improve on this. We will all win.

Comment Faire Son Ourlet Toute Seule

On travaille seuls la majorité du temps.
Et les autres membres de la famille on un autre agenda. Si vous avez réussi à les convaincre de vous laisser seul pendant que vous cousez, vous pouvez difficilement leur demander de tout laisser tomber pour venir immédiatement, là, à cet instant même vous aider, n'est-ce pas?
Un des trucs que je trouve difficile à faire toute seule, c'est le ourlet d'une jupe circulaire. J'adore les jupes circulaires, j'adore le tissu, j'aime en porter beaucoup. Pour cette robe, j'en voulais énormément, je voulais une jupe circulaire froncée avec un pli devant, plus de tissu, plus de ourlet à coudre, aucune aide.

Patternmaking for Fashion Design

C'est en me renseignant sur la manière de dessiner cette jupe que j'ai trouvé une possible solution à mon problème et que j'ai décidé de l'essayer.
Dans le dessin des patrons pour la production, l'étirement du biais d'une jupe est calculé et inclus dans le patronage. Pour nous, ça n'a pas énormément de sens parce qu'on ne travaille jamais avec le même tissu, mais je me suis dis que si je laissais les pièces de la jupe pendre avant de la coudre, je pourrais la retailler à l'aide du patron. Ça pourrait le faire, non?
Donc, avant de coudre le haut de la robe, j'ai bâti le haut des pièces de la jupe et de la doublure pour ne pas que ça bouge et je les ai suspendues avec des "poids".

Le lendemain, avant d'assembler la jupe, j'ai posé les pièces sur le patron et enlevé l'excédent. J'étais très satisfaite de mon moi-même, me pensant bien intelligente jusqu'à ce que j'aie un moment de grand vide intersidéral qui m'a ramené à la raison. Une fois la robe terminée, j'ai fait mon ourlet, comme d'habitude.

J'ai fait 2 rangées de bâti à la machine, distantes de 4cm que j'ai utilisées comme guide lors du pressage, j'ai tiré sur le fil du haut pour résorber le tissu en trop, pressé une fois de plus, j'ai fait un ourlet invisible à la machine en utilisant le pied presseur approprié puis j'ai enlevé les fils de bâti.
Je ne suis pas entièrement certaine que cette méthode fonctionne pour tous les tissus, mais pour des rideaux Ikéa, dont l'étirement était minimal, ça marche. En plus, je n'ai pas eu à attendre pour faire le ourlet donc la robe a été terminée en 2 sessions de couture. Satisfaction presque instantanée!

J'ai copié le haut du patron Vogue 2512 dont les ajustements avaient déjà été fait et la jupe est une version du Simplicity 8943 un peu ratée. J'ai tout ce tissu devant et presque rien derrière, logiquement j'aurais du mettre un pli derrière pour balancer le tout. On va appeler ça une erreur de designer débutante.

Je peux parfaitement vivre avec, c'est beaucoup moins visible qu'un ourlet irrégulier. La prochaine robe n'en sera que plus jolie.

Comme toujours quand je trouve un truc, je pense que ça va révolutionner le monde de la couture maison, puis je découvre que c'est une façon standard de procéder dans une autre lointaine contrée. Si vous essayez cette méthode, dîtes-moi si ça fonctionne pour vous et si vous, membre du collectif couturier, pouvez améliorer cette méthode. On va tous y gagner.

My Double Life / Ma Double Vie

Sewing is my job. I bet you didn't know that, not all of you anyway.

And though garments are my favorite things to sew, and the subject of this blog, most of what I sew is left un-blogged about and frankly, I think it should remain this way, unless you would like to see more fanny packs like these!

Man these are ugly!

As with a lot of industrial stuff, function took over the form. These are man overboard security kits. They include a SRS beacon, a glow in the dark stick, a knife, a light and a whistle. Making these pretty would have meant more time, more hours billed and an exorbitant end price for my customer. The problem with store bought fanny packs is that the metal zipper tabs can't take the salt water, oxidize and are quickly useless making access to those nifty life-saving thingies difficult. So the briefing was : very sturdy fanny pack with a huge plastic zipper that can easily be reached for. Pretty was not on the list.

My other sewing life is just as varied as my sewist one. I have to sew humongous stuff, I learned to work with the Molle system, I get to experiment with nifty stuff like Cuben Fiber, I sew with 130 needles on an industrial machine, I have used about 10 km of thread this year and I get to burn it with a lighter to end a seam.

But most of it, I get to do small parts for bigger teams, the stuff I make travels around the world and some of it could save a life.

I'm proud of this, it's worth talking about it a little.

La couture c'est mon travail. Certains d'entre vous le savent, mais pas tous.

Même si les vêtements c'est ce que je préfère, et le sujet de ce blog, vous n'avez jamais vu la majorité de ce que je couds et franchement, je pense que ça devrait rester comme ça, à moins que vous insistiez pour voir plus de sac bananes!

Qu'est-ce qu'ils sont laids!

Mais comme souvent avec les trucs industriels, la fonction a pris le dessus de la forme. Ce sont des sacs pour le matériel de sécurité obligatoire au cas ou on tomberait à l'eau. Ils contiennent une balise SRS, du cyalume, un couteau, une loupiotte et un siflet. En faire des jolis aurait pris plus de temps, donc plus d'heures à facturer et au final mon client aurait eu une facture exorbitante. Le problème avec les sacs bananes du commerce, c'est que la tirette du zip s'oxyde à cause du sel rendant l'accès à ces petits objets qui sauvent la vie impossible. Les instructions étaient donc : une banane super solide avec un gros zip en plastique qu'on peut attraper facilement. Joli n'était pas sur la liste.

Mon autre vie de couturière est tout aussi variée que ma vie de couturière du dimanche, je couds des trucs énormes, j'ai appris à utiliser le système Molle, j'ai fait plein d'expérience avec des matières techniques comme le Cuben Fiber, je couds avec des aiguilles de 130 sur une machine industrielle, j'ai utilisé plus de 10 km de fil cette année que je brule avec un briquet pour finir les coutures.

Mais plus que tout, je fais des petits trucs pour de grandes équipes, ces trucs voyagent autour du monde et certains de ces trucs pourraient sauver une vie.

Y'à de quoi être fière et en parler un tout petit peu.

Just a quick picture to show you what Isabelle's dress looked like on her. Considering she lives about 200 kilometers away, I think the fit is pretty good.

Are you a big 4 size 8?

My sister came over to visit and brought over 40 patterns. A lot of them are smallish and I have enough difficulties fitting myself, I won't add the pain of grading from an 8 to a 14. Maybe you have a tiny teen with a flair for vintage? Or are you in the left spectrum of pattern sizes?

I have to sort them and prepare them for shipping. Some of these beauties are going to fly the land of the tiny pixie seamstress in a monster giveaway. Thanks go to Pauline who put them aside for us and Carole for flying them over.

Just in case you are a new follower, my sister rocks and she will wear anything I make for her just for fun. Here is a picture you haven't seen yet, we were on our way to a Nixon theme party in LA in vintage French jersey. Look! I was thinner 10 years ago.

Est-ce que vous cousez en taille 8 américaine?

Ma soeur est venue me visiter et m'a ramener plus de 40 patrons. La majorité sont de petite taille et j'ai déjà assez de difficultés comme ça à faire mes ajustements, je ne vais pas en plus passer de la taille 8 à la taille 14 pour m'amuser. Vous avez une petite ado qui aime le vintage? Etes-vous plutôt à gauche dans les courbes de taille?

Je vais tout trier et préparer des envois dans le pays des petites couturières bientôt. Merci à Pauline qui les a mis de côté pour nous et à Carole de les avoir apportés.

Are You Advanced? / C'est Quoi Votre Niveau?

What's your sewing level?

I'm asking because I saw someone the other day that was listed as advanced on a sewing forum and I thought : "Are you kidding me lady? How on earth can you say that and show me a top with major gaposis of the armhole, a stretched out neckline with fuzzy top stitching and a fit for a dog?" I felt it was an insult to my years of careful preparation and my ever growing array of self-thought sewing techniques.

She must have pressed the wrong button when registering.

The question remains though, when exactly do you reach the advanced level?

Is it when you don't need instructions to make a lined skirt, dress, jacket, pants or coat? Is it when you have a choice of methods for constructing and fitting a garment? Is it in constancy? Or like Ann on the Sewing Bee, grace under pressure? I was thinking about that yesterday, making a mental list of stuff I need to learn before daring to call myself advanced and then I snipped right through my seam.

I'll have a double serving of humble pie please.

ps. I have fixed it, only you and I will notice, and I really should have bought the plates that go with this fabric for fun.

C'est quoi votre niveau?

Je demande parce l'autre jour sur un forum, j'ai vu une madame qui se dit couturière avancée et je me suis dit : "Mais elle se fout de moi? Comment peut-elle dire ça et me montrer un top avec les emmanchures béantes, un col tout étiré avec une surpiqûre toute croche et un tombé à vomir?" C'était une insulte à toutes mes années d'apprentissage de techniques diverses et de préparations minutieuses.

Elle a dû appuyer sur le mauvais bouton lors de son inscription.

Mais la question m'a trotté dans la tête, quand devient-on une couturière avancée?

Est-ce quand on n'a plus besoin d'instructions pour faire une robe, une jupe, une veste, un pantalon, ou un manteau doublé? Est-ce quand on connait plusieurs manières de faire et d'ajuster un même vêtement? Est-ce dans la régularité? Est-ce que c'est dans le calme malgré la pression comme Ann dans The Sewing Bee? Je pensais à tout ce que je dois encore apprendre avant de pouvoir dire que je suis une couturière avancée quand j'ai mis un coup de ciseaux dans ma couture.

Things don't always work out.

Months ago, Minerva Crafts was looking for someone to make innovative use of their Olfa Compass Cutter. As I was preparing for the craft fair, I thought up a whole bunch of circle cutter crafty stuff to do and sent them a mail saying it would be really cool to make more fabric buttons, they loved the idea and sent me one to try out.

I'm really sad to say that it's the wrong tool for cutting tiny fabric circles. Fabric is way too slippery for a straight blade and whilst I was struggling to make perfect circles, I was thinking somebody needs to invent a rotary circle cutter. It turns out that Olfa makes one.

I reported to the good people of Minerva Crafts telling them it was the wrong tool for the task and asked if I could pass it along to one of my reader who does paper craft which they have agreed to do.

Parfois, ça ne marche pas.

Il y a quelques mois, Minerva Crafts cherchait des gens pour trouver une utilisation innovante pour leur Cutter Compas de chez Olfa. Comme je préparais le Marché des Créateurs, j'ai pensé à plein de bidouilles avec des cercles de tissus et je leur ai dit que je referais bien des badges en tissu. Ils ont aimé l'idée et m'ont envoyer l'outil pour l'essayer.

Malheureusement, le tissu ça bouge trop pour la lame droite et pendant que j'essayais de faire de parfait petits cercles de tissu, je me disais qu'on avait besoin d'inventer un cutter compas au couteau rotatif, mais ça existe déjà.

Quand j'ai dit au gentils gens de chez Minerva Crafts que ça n'allait pas, j'ai demandé si je pouvais le donner à une de mes lectrices qui fait des créations en papier, ils ont dit oui.

This is the prettiest dress I have ever made! But it's not for me...

It was a dream of mine to be working with lace, but I don't wear lace. Other people do though, for weddings and such, and my friend Isabelle was desperate. Originally, the idea was to make a copy of my red Christmas dress, but the ponte knit available was in sad winter colors, so I suggested stretch lace. Then I got to the fabric store and changed my mind because the stretchy stuff looked and felt negligee-like so I bought real lace (I think it's Alençon but I'm not versed in lace terminology) and polyester crepe.

I knew when I picked this lace that it meant more work I would have to redraft the bodice for a woven and zipper insertion and the sleeves for non-stretch lace. And I only had a couple of days (in reality, it took 3)... so I cheated, big time.

The pattern is an adaptation from Burda's peplum pattern lengthened in front, hey it already had sleeves and it's for woven, my friends measurements (I had already made a muslin for stretch) and the skirt and collar line are from the red Christmas dress.

I bought a generous amount of fabric to be on the safe side, cut it and then I serged, yes you heard me right, I serged the lace to the crêpe underlining... If you are a Couture freak, you should stop reading right here.

I felt sacrilegious, about to commit a capital sewing sin. I pictured Couture gurus banishing me from the blogosphere : "you don't do that to fine lace" Whiz! Bam! Gone!

Yet, I thought, if Vuitton can coverstitch it's entire Spring 2012 collection, I can serge my lace if I want to! So with this defiant swagger and a clock ticking, I started to serge.

Other sewing sins include : no lining, an invisible zipper, no hand sewn overlapping of the lace, no matching motifs, except at the skirt and sleeve hems when cutting, no waist stay, hardly any hand sewing... and yet, I think it looks pretty awesome.

I must admit to having had a few heart failures in the process, but fortunately, lace is pretty forgiving in hiding the few mistakes I made. Like when I messed up the French seams in the sleeves (Would you believe I still do that? Duh! Can you say I am not unpicking serged lace?)

If I gave any advice on working with lace, not that I am an expert or anything, I'd say stay calm, take a break, have some tea, take your time, hand baste where you normally wouldn't, sew very slow with a fine needle, take a nap, rest, breath, go for a walk, stand back, think, breath some more, handle carefully, don't rush. Using my largest sewing foot worked best for me. It helped a lot that it was clear plastic.

The machine will eat your lace no matter what you try to do. I worked around that by keeping some parchment paper strips near the machine and sandwiched seams that were lace on lace, sewing very slow sometimes turning the hand wheel myself. Keep in mind that the paper is hard to remove, do it delicately and very slowly, folding the paper before tearing it and holding it down with your thumbnail.

The hairiest moment was when the dress was almost finished, the sleeves beautifully set and I had to serge the seam allowance for a neater finish. I have never ever been this nervous sewing anything (I did contemplate binding it, but it was bulky, any suggestions?).

I'm quite proud of it because it fits her perfectly and she looks like a million bucks in it. Her husband finds her beautiful.

Sadly, she'll have to dress it down as she runs the risk of looking better than the bride, which may cause a diplomatic incident, so I suggested a matching belt, cardigan, shoes, bag in the color of her choice.

C'est la plus jolie robe que j'ai cousue, mais elle n'est pas pour moi...
J'ai toujours rêvé de travailler de la jolie dentelle mais je n'en porte pas. D'autres personnes en portent, pour des mariages par exemple, et ma copine Isabelle était désespérée. L'idée d'origine était de reproduire ma robe de Noël mais le jersey disponible était en couleurs d'hiver, j'ai donc suggéré de la dentelle stretch. puis quand je suis arrivée au magasin, j'ai trouvé que ça ferait trop vêtement d'intérieur alors j'ai acheté de la vraie dentelle (je pense que c'est de la dentelle d'Alençon, mais je n'y connais rien) et de la crêpe de chine polyester.

Je savais que j'allais avoir plus de travail, que je devrais redessiner le corsage pour accomoder le tissu, une fermeture éclair et des manches sans stretch et je n'avais que 2 jours pour la finir (en réalité ça a pris 3 jours) alors j'ai triché un max.
Le patron est une adaptation du top à basque Burda que j'ai allongé devant, il a des manches et est conçu pour un tissu tissé, les mesures de ma copine (je lui avais fait une toile pour un jersey). La jupe et le col viennent de ma robe de Noël.
J'ai acheté plus de tissu que nécéssaire pour parer au bourdes, je l'ai coupé et j'ai surjeté, oui vous m'avez bien entendue, j'ai surjeté la dentelle et la crêpe ensemble... si vous êtes fans de Haute Couture, il faut arrêter de lire maintenant!

Sacrilège! J'avais l'impression de commettre un péché capital. Je m'imaginais zappée de la blogosphère par les grandes prêtresses de la Couture : "il ne faut pas faire ça à la dentelle!" Pfuit! Effacée!
Mais, si Vuitton peut finir toute sa collection printemps 2012 à la recouvreuse, je peux surjeter ma dentelle si je veux. Armée de cette conviction, j'ai surjeté.

J'ai commis d'autres péchés de Couture : je n'ai pas fait de doublure, j'ai posé un zip invisible, je n'ai pas chevauché la dentelle à la main, je n'ai pas aligné les motifs sauf aux ourlets des manches et de la jupe quand j'ai coupé le tissu, je n'ai pas mis de ceinture de maintien à l'intérieur, je n'ai presque rien cousu main et malgré tout, je trouve le résultat très réussi.
Je dois vous avouer avoir eu quelques arrêts du coeur pendant le processus, mais la dentelle est indulgente et cache bien mes petites erreurs. Comme ma couture anglaise ratée dans les manches (après toutes ces années je me trompe toujours et non! je ne déferai pas une couture surjetée dans de la dentelle!)

Si j'avais des conseils à donner sur la dentelle, je ne suis pas une experte hein, je vous dirais prenez votre temps, restez calme, faites une pause, buvez un thé, bâtissez tout ce que vous ne bâtissez jamais, cousez très lentement avec une aiguille fine, faites une sieste, respirez, prenez une marche, du recul, pensez, respirez encore un peu, manipulez avec précaution, ne vous précipitez pas.
J'ai utilisé mon pied presseur le plus large et il est en plastique transparent, ça m'a beaucoup aidé.

Votre machine va "manger" votre dentelle quelque soit la stratégie adoptée. Pour ma part, j'ai intercalé la dentelle dans des bandes de papier cuisson. J'ai cousu très lentement, parfois en tournant le volant à la main. Le papier est difficile à retirer. Je l'ai plié le long de la couture et en le tenant avec l'ongle du pouce, je l'ai déchiré délicatement.

J'ai eu des palpitations quand, la robe presque finie, j'ai du surjeter la marge de couture des manches. Je crois que je n'ai jamais été aussi nerveuse en cousant quoi que ce soit (j'ai contemplé la pose d'un biais, mais ça faisait trop épais, vous avez une suggestion?).

Malgré tous mes péchés, j'en suis très fière. La robe lui va parfaitement, elle à l'air d'une millionnaire dedans et son mari la trouve belle.
C'est triste, mais elle va devoir l'habiller un peu, au risque de créer un incident diplomatique et d'être plus jolie que la mariée. Je lui ai suggéré un cardigan, une ceinture, des chaussures et un sac assortis.
J'ai très hâte de voir les photos.

Leather Bag Handles

I made some leather bag handles this week.

Because I'm poorly equipped to do leatherwork, I constantly have to find ways to make the stuff I want with the tools I have. This is not really a tutorial as I don't really know what I'm doing, it's just a method that worked for me.

You'll need some leather, some plastic tubing (found in a hardware store), a large quilting ruler you can hold, a rotary cutter, a cutting mat, a zipper foot and a tiny bit of scotch tape. If you are on a home machine, you should use a leather needle.

You can sew thick leather on your home machine, it might be a little longer as you may have to turn the handwheel yourself so you don't burn the motor but it works, so don't let that stop you.

Set your machine to the longest stitch length, adjust the tension on a scrap.

Cut the desired length of plastic tubing, 35cm in my case. Cut a generous strip of leather, enough to go around the plastic tube plus a generous sewing allowance on the side and on each end so you can sew them in. Put the tiny bit of scotch under the zipper foot so it glides on the leather and sew as close to the tube as you can manage.

Put your ruler perpendicular to the table and cut away your seam allowance very close to the stitching line. Voilà! You have your own bag handles ready to sew into your bag whichever way you want.

Mes Poignées de Sac en Cuir

J'ai fait des poignées de sac en cuir cette semaine.

Je n'ai pas l'équipement qu'il faut pour la maroquinerie alors je dois constamment trouver des méthodes pour faire ce que je veux avec le matériel que j'ai. Ceci n'est pas un vrai tutoriel, dans le sens où je ne sais pas trop ce que je fais, mais ça marche pour moi, ça peut marcher pour vous.

Vous aurez besoin de cuir, de tube en plastique (trouvé chez le quincailler du coin), une large règle que vous pouvez tenir fermement, un cutter rotatif, un tapis de coupe, un pied pour fermeture éclair et un tout petit bout de scotch. Sur une machine normale, une aiguille pour cuir va vous faciliter la vie.

Vous pouvez utiliser une machine de madame pour coudre du cuir épais, mais ça prend plus de temps parce que vous devrez tourner la mollette vous-même pour ne pas cramer le moteur, mais ça fonctionne, il ne faut pas que ça vous arrête.

Prenez la plus grande longueur de point et ajustez la tension sur une découpe.

Coupez le tube à la longueur voulue, dans mon cas 35cm. Coupez une grande bande de cuir avec des marges généreuses sur les côtés et à chaque bout pour pouvoir les installer par la suite. Mettez le petit bout de scotch sous votre pied presseur, ça va faire l'effet d'un pied en silicone, puis cousez le plus près possible du tube.

Mettez votre règle perpendiculairement à la table près de la ligne de couture et coupez les marges au cutter rotatif. Voilà! Vos poignées de sac sont prêtes à installer là où vous le voulez.

I'm stuck.

I have two sewing projects on the way and there is nothing much to show because it's not quite going the way I'd like them to be.

Above is a sweater refashion, where I just discovered I don't quite have enough material to work with and will have to find a workaround or bin the whole thing.

Bottom is a bag, the second muslin looks horrible nothing like the inspiration shot, I may have taken on more than I can chew.

I have to make lots of design decisions which I am not very inspired to take.

In the meantime, Ruth and I are working on the website redesign, it's starting to look swell. I've been streamlining my web presence, my feeble attempt at time management, goodbye Hellocoton, Linkedin, Kollabora and The Sew Weekly, hello Thread & Needles, Bloglovin' and Feedly, damn you Google Reader. I'm still on BurdaStyle and We Sew Retro and Facebook.

I signed up for Onswipe which is a really neat way to present your website, Twitter and Pinterest feeds on tablets all on one page.

I know I'm procrastinating when I start tweaking code lines in Blogger. I'm not proud of it.

Je suis coincée.

J'ai deux projets en route et je n'ai pas grand chose à vous montrer parce que ça ne se passe pas comme j'aimerais.

Ci-haut, un pull que je recycle. Je viens de découvrir que je n'ai pas tout à fait assez de matière et je n'ai pas de solution, soit je trouve, soit je jette.

Ci-bas, c'est un sac. J'en suis au deuxième proto et c'est une horreur. J'ai peut être été trop ambitieuse?

J'ai donc plein de décision de design à prendre et je ne suis pas très, très inspirée.

Donc pendant ce temps, Ruth et moi travaillons sur le design du blog, ça commence à être joli. J'essaie de rationaliser ma présence numérique, je suis désolée je n'ai pas le temps pour tout le monde, au revoir Hellocoton, Linkedin, Kollabora, The Sew Weekly, bonjour Thread & Needles, Bloglovin' et Feedly, soit maudit Google Reader. J'ai gardé BurdaStyle et We Sew Retro et Facebook.

J'ai signé chez Onswipe, ça présente les flux du blog, de Twitter et de Pinterest sur une seule page si vous me lisez sur tablette, c'est très cool.

Quand je commence à trifouiller des lignes de code dans Blogger, je sais que je suis en train de remettre à demain ce que je pourrais faire maintenant, je n'en suis pas super fière.

Happy Feet

I have said in the past that I was going to buy some presser feet for my Baby Lock.

They are very expensive, over €50 a piece around here and I delayed the purchase, until I was asked if I could sew 47 tutus for Jr C's dance school's year end show. That's a lot of tutus and I thought "man I need some serious equipment if I want this to be painless", so I started to look around for a solution.

I prayed the Peter Lappin God of eBay Auctions (he is so successful doing that), bid on a whole set of little feet and won. According to the package, I saved about $200. That's all good.

I'm very impressed with the cording, blind hem and elastic feet, I am amused by the ruffling foot. I'm not sure the beading foot will get used much.

I'm really happy, I have another set of sturdy tools to unleash my creative juices.

Meanwhile, the dance teacher decided to rent the tutus...

Là je me suis dis : "il va me falloir de l'équipement sérieux si je veux faire ça sans peine" alors j'ai cherché une solution.

J'ai prié le Bon Dieu des Enchères eBay de Peter Lappin (il y a beaucoup de succès), j'ai misé et gagné une boîte pleine de petits pieds. D'après l'emballage, j'ai économisé $200. C'est bon ça!

Je suis très impressionnée par les pieds pour élastique, ourlet invisible et passepoil, amusée par le pied fronceur, mais pas du tout certaine d'utiliser celui pour perles et paillettes.

Je suis très contente et me demande déjà ce que je vais créer avec mes nouveaux outils.

Pendant ce temps, le prof de danse a décidé de louer les tutus...

The Fabric Exchange

This coat is still impossible to photograph!

It's all Rosy's fault again and it's another long story.

I'll try to be brief because it's going to get in the way of the actual garment which I love very much. I did Rosy's New Girl's sewalong in December, Maider did too, I visited Maider's blog and really liked this sweatshirt pattern she tested, I bought the ENE pattern from Naii thinking I had the right fabric in stash, turns out I didn't have enough. Later on, Maider said she had plenty of the fabric she used to make the hoodie and would love to do a swap. She chose 3m of Madras languishing in my stash, she sent me the printed plaid wool/polyester fuzzy jersey and I set out to work.

The first thing I did was to redraft the hood. I didn't really like the 2 little horns the darts made on the top of the head so I copied a Helly Hansen polar fleece hood I really liked. It's a 3 pieces hood which is smaller and anatomically correct.

The second thing I did was to line it with a couple of old t-shirts because Maider said the fabric was scratchy and she was totally right.

The third thing I did was to taper the sleeve.

The fourth thing I did was to use foldover elastic at the wrist, hem and hood instead of elastic bands. I first serged the lining and fleece together to facilitate the insertion.

Some notes about the pattern : The instructions are in Spanish, they are full of pictures and easy to follow. There are no markings, no notches, you have to make up your own. I really like the way the front pocket is built, it's more flattering than a standard kangaroo patch pocket. There is a version for nursing moms which is very cool and there is a package with a children pattern so you can make sweatshirts for your whole family for 8€.

If I have any misgivings, nothing to write home about really unless you are picky, they are about the sleeve heads and armholes which are the same front and back and they bunch up a little. I may correct that if I make that top again.

This is a successful make, so successful in fact that I wore it every single day this week as the outside temperature dropped near 0°C and warmth was needed.

Rosy has just finished a very ambitious New Girl coat sewalong and Maider participated. They are both wearing hot pink Kate Spade knockoffs and I'm jealous.
