Mobilizing a Digital Government: A Practical Approach to Building Apps

Federal Government agencies are responding to a mandate from the White House to find ways to use emerging technologies to lower costs, and improve customer service and access to information. Mobile technologies are a key part of this strategy, with specific direction to mobilize at least two customer-facing services over the next 12 months. Agencies are grappling with ways to develop and deliver device agnostic, user friendly applications, while operating under constrained budgets and resources. Join us at the ASTD International Conference and Exposition for an in depth discussion on designing and developing cross platform mobile applications, which make the most of project resources.

Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. JAMtech™ is a hands-on educational workshop that introduces students to innovative technology used to develop digital games and applications. Participants of JAMtech™ are then eligible to apply for Carney’s internship program for the opportunity to experience working in a professional creative technology company.

Expert programmers and digital artists from Carney will share their knowledge with more than 50 students from 17 high schools in the D.C. metro area. Students will work individually and in teams, designing and building components of an online game over the course of a single day. At the conclusion

of the event, students will showcase their work to parents, teachers, facilitators and fellow students.

"We are so excited about hosting an educational event that introduces the talented students in the area to designing and building digital games," said John Carney, president and CEO. "As these students look to their future, we want them to know that they don't have to leave this area in order to work with the latest and coolest technologies."

“JAMtech™ is designed with multiple capabilities and interests in mind,” said John Low, Carney’s chief creative officer and one of the lead facilitators of the event. “There are opportunities for students to work with graphics, design and of course, coding, but the most important part is a curious mind and an interest in exploring creative ways to solve problems and use technology.”

November’s JAMtech™ content will focus on the Unity game engine, a powerful tool for creating professional-level games. “Unity presents a straight-forward developer interface that allows students to get results relatively quickly,” said Low. Basic concepts of physics, as well as digital gaming design techniques such as scripting and texturing, are discussed before students begin their own design and development work.

To facilitate participation, Carney executives recruited area high schools students through formal announcements to school administrators, meetings with counselors and teachers, and presentations to individual high school classrooms. For a minimal $18 registration fee, students receive a full day of instruction and guidance from Carney technology professionals, a USB flash drive with the completed software application, breakfast, lunch, snacks, beverages, a JAMtech™ t-shirt and a Carney cube puzzle.

All participants of JAMtech™ events are eligible to apply for Carney’s paid internship program, which operates throughout the school year and summer. The internship program not only provides students with a hands-on experience with innovative technology, but also gives each the opportunity to develop valuable professional skills and apply their own creativity and problem solving to important projects.

Over the past two years Carney has created a total of 98 new positions, including 17 paid internships to local high school and college students.

Event Schedule:

9 a.m. Introduction to JAMtech™ Fall 2012

Presented by John Low, chief creative officer.

9:15 a.m. Introduction to the Unity Game Engine Environment

Facilitators walk through the interface to teach students how to navigate the scene and create and transform objects.

10 a.m. Introducing the Ball and Plane

Participants develop a simple game using a ball and plane.

Join us at Elliott Masie’s Learning 2012 conference in Orlando Florida. Carney’s Chief Creative Officer, John Low, will be participating on a panel discussing the use of 3D Worlds & Avatars for learning, on Monday October 22, at 2:45 in the Yucatan 1/2 room.

More information from the Learning 2012 Program Guide:

Exploring 3D Worlds & Avatars for Learning

Led by: Dan Gallagher, Comcast

David Powell, Center for Creative Leadership; Sue Ells, Progressive Insurance

The realm of virtual worlds, avatars and 3D technology remains largely untapped by corporate learning organizations. With that said, there continues to be a good deal of optimism, skepticism and investigation around this arena’s ability to afford companies unique learning capabilities, like replicating dangerous real-world situations. Hear from learning leaders in a variety of industries who are designing, implementing and researching virtual worlds, avatars and 3D technology for learning.

Designing a virtual/3D learning environment - without the help of a vendor

Real-world use cases

The latest research

www.learning2012.com

Gold Stevie Award for U.S. Army

ALEXANDRIA, VA – September 18, 2012 – Carney, Inc. was presented with a GOLD Stevie® Award in the Professional Education category, in The 10th Annual American Business Awards last night. Carney also received BRONZE Stevie Awards in the Business/Government and New Product or Service of the Year-Software-Collaboration/Social Networking Solution categories.

Carney, Inc. received a gold Stevie award for the Transportation Corps (Unit Movement Operations) Composite Risk Management Course in the Professional Education category as well as a bronze Stevie award in the Business/Government category. This course is designed to challenge the learner to apply the Army Risk Management Process to mobilization and deployment mission hazards. The interactive course allows the learner to experience and apply risk management principles to real-world accident scenarios derived from actual accident reports and statistics.
Carney will be speaking at the Serious Play Conference August 21 – 23, on performance oriented design

Join Carney at the Serious Play Conference on August 21 – 23 where we will be talking about high impact, low cost solutions using a performance oriented design approach. Specifically, we will examine the approach we used to design and develop a serious game portal for the U.S. Army that received more than 18,000 game plays within the first two weeks of launch. We will answer the questions of why use serious games, and how to maximize game theory to achieve performance outcomes. Find out more at http://www.seriousplayconference.com/
