Formula Ford Battle Beckons for Brown

Scottish racing driver Carol Brown has confirmed she will return to competitive action in the 2009 SMRC Formula Ford championship.

The reigning SMRC Legends champion has made the switch to the single-seater series in a bid to further develop her skills as a driver, and will contest all 17 rounds of the competition.

The Falkirk-based 21-year-old worked hard during the winter close season to raise the sponsorship she required to go racing - and secured backing from H&J Burgoyne car and van sales, Norscott Vending and Jem Engines.

Brown got her first taste of the Formula Ford at a pre-season test day at Knockhill on April 12, putting in laps alongside a number of her rivals for the forthcoming season. With last year’s champion Graham Carroll having moved on, Brown will be one of around half-a-dozen competitors in the field with a chance of taking the 2009 title.

The first round of the SMRC-organised championship takes place on Sunday April 26 at Knockhill, and marks the start of a busy calendar for the Formula Ford competitors. They will contest nine event meetings, including supporting the British Touring Cars, British GTs and British GT Cup, as well as the series’ showcase Golden Helmet event at the Classic SpeedFair in July.

After an outstanding title-winning season in the 2008 SMRC Legends Cars championship Carol Brown became the first woman to win one of Scotland’s most prestigious motorsport awards - the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap trophy. She was also named the top lady driver competing in Scotland for the third time in succession Brown’s long-term goal is to follow a similar path to fellow Scot Jonathan Adam and progress to the high-profile British Touring Car Championship.

Carol Brown said:
I’m really looking forward to getting back on track and racing after the winter break, and very grateful to my sponsors for their support in helping me to achieve that. It will be a totally new experience for me this season with the switch to Formula Ford, as I’d never even sat in a single-seater before last weekend’s test session. It’s totally different from racing a Legends car, the Formula Ford handles very differently and requires a completely different driving style. There is also a lot more you can do tweak the set-up of the car, which is something else I’m looking forward to learning more about. I have another testing session ahead of the first event so I’m confident that will help me to settle into the car a bit more before real action starts. While the first few races will be a learning curve I hope I can be on the pace sooner rather than later.”

The number crunchers have been drafted in to take a closer look at Carol's successful 2008 season.

On her way to claiming the SMRC Legends Championship title Carol recorded the following statistics:

overall wins at six out of the seven race meetings she took part in.

in 21 races she claimed 16 podium finishes - including six 1st places.

she also took seven 2nd places and three 3rd places.

Carol recorded 7 fastest laps during the season.

in total Carol completed 182 laps throughout the year.

Carol overtook other competitors a staggering 210 times over the course of season - meaning she passed an average of 1.15 cars on every lap!

Carol to Compete in Celebrity Kart Challenge

Scottish racer Carol Brown will go head to head with some of the most famous names in motorsport at a charity karting event on Friday (January 9).

The Falkirk-based driver will take part in the prestigious BP Ultimate Celebrity Kart Challenge at the Autosport International Show - held in Birmingham’s NEC arena - alongside stars such as David Brabham, Tom Kristensen, Frank Biela, Louise Goodman and fellow Scot Paul di Resta.

The annual race offers 30 members of the public the chance to join the televised event and rub shoulders with their racing heroes for £300 - and the 2008 competition raised a staggering £47,000 for good causes. The 2009 event promises to top £50,000 for various charities including the Richard Burns Foundation, Christies Hospital NARA and the Emmaus Hampshire.

Brown – who is the reigning Scottish Legends Cars champion and a former karting title winner - will join a team including Touring Car star Michael Doyle, karting champion Daniel Lloyd, sportcar ace Johnny Mowlem, Superbike rider Tom Sykes and also rockstar racer Neil Primrose of Travis.

She will be hoping to emulate the success of her last charity karting event – when she finished on the podium alongside her team-mates at the Radio Clyde Cash for Kids Grand Prix in December.

The 21-year-old is looking forward to mixing with some of the world’s best racers following her own stellar season in 2008. After an outstanding championship-winning season in the SMRC Legends Cars championship Brown became the first woman to win one of Scotland’s most prestigious motorsport awards - the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap trophy. She was also named the top lady driver competing in Scotland for the third time in succession.

Brown’s ultimate aim is to make the grade in the ultra-competitive British Touring Car Championship, and is currently trying to find sponsors willing to back her plans to step up a level and race across the UK in 2009.

Triple Trophy Haul for Brown

Scottish race driver Carol Brown has become the first woman to win one of Scotland’s most prestigious motorsport awards.

At the Scottish Motor Racing Club’s annual awards ceremony Brown (21) collected the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap trophy – previously won by racing legends such as the late David Leslie.

The wheel spinner, from an Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-type race car, is presented each year to an up-and-coming young driver who has started their racing career in Scotland and shown enormous potential.

The trophy went to Brown in recognition of her outstanding championship-winning season in the SMRC Legends Cars championship – which she dominated from start to finish against older and more experienced male drivers. It was presented to her by Ecurie Ecosse patron Hugh McCaig in front of over 280 members and guests, including Club President and double Le Mans winner Allan McNish and 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti.

In addition to the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap award, the Falkirk-based driver also collected the Legends Quaich and the Edinburgh Students Charities Quaich - presented to the top lady driver competing in Scotland. It is the third time in succession Brown has taken the top honour for women after also receiving the title in 2006 and 2007 – marking her out as one of the best Scottish female racers in history.

Brown’s three-trophy haul at the SMRC awards capped a tremendous year for the young driver. She hopes the recognition of her success will help her to find sponsors willing to back her plans to step up a level and race across the UK in 2009. Brown’s ultimate aim is to make the grade in the ultra-competitive British Touring Car Championship, and hopes to move a step closer to her dream by competing in one of the championship’s support series next season.

“It was a real honour to receive the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap award, the calibre of drivers who have won it before is unbelievable and they are true legends. I’m very proud to be the first woman to have won it, although I hope I won’t be the last. I was actually suffering from a heavy cold during the awards ceremony so it all passed by me in my daze. It’s really only just starting to sink in what an achievement this year has been for me. I’m determined to go on and compete at a higher level next year and prove just how good I am, so hopefully this sort of award will help me to attract sponsors that believe in my ability and want to share in my success going forward."

Podium Place for Carol at Cash for Kids Grand Prix

Carol Brown claimed a third place finish alongside her team-mates at the Radio Clyde Cash for Kids Grand Prix 2008.

The reigning SMRC Legends Cars champion joined the In-Tune Racing team in the Super Fast Race with British Touring Car ace Michael Doyle and single-seater pilot Neil Purdie - a late call up after Glasgow Airport legend John Smeaton had to withdraw due to illness.

However, despite clearly being under the weather, John stayed to cheer on the team and to present the cheques and medals at the end of the charity karting event - which raised an incredible £10,085 for Cash for Kids. Every penny of the total raised will be distributed to deserving causes before Christmas to ensure there is festive cheer for those who need it most.

Carol's partner Phil also made a surprise guest appearance in the preceding Super Fun Race when he joined Carol's management team The Inside Line - after director Gavin Miller was forced to pull out at the very last minute due to illness. Phil almost managed to equal Carol's feat as he led Team TIL to a very respectable fourth place finish.
