Georgia State Defeats Appalachian State 39-23 Behind Rushing Attack, Turnovers

BOONE – Georgia State turned Appalachian State's mistakes into points Saturday afternoon, using a defensive touchdown, a dominant rushing attack and four field goals from Samer Layous to defeat the Mountaineers 39-23 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

The Panthers intercepted Malachi Singleton twice, returning one for a touchdown, and held Appalachian State to just 59 rushing yards while controlling possession for more than 37 minutes. The victory improved Georgia State to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in Sun Belt Conference play, matching the Mountaineers' records in both categories.

For Appalachian State, the defeat came despite 297 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Georgia State's ability to run the football, pressure the quarterback and capitalize on turnovers ultimately separated the teams.

The Panthers rushed for 265 yards on 52 attempts, with Lanear McCrary Jr. leading the way with 123 yards on 21 carries. Dennis Murray Jr. added 76 yards on seven attempts, while Qwantavius Wiggins contributed 50 yards on 11 carries.

Georgia State established its ground attack immediately, consuming nearly six minutes on a 12-play opening possession before Layous connected on a 45-yard field goal.

Appalachian State responded with one of its best drives of the afternoon. Singleton guided the Mountaineers 75 yards in nine plays, completing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Galloway to give App State a 7-3 lead.

The advantage lasted less than four minutes.

Georgia State answered with another 75-yard possession, capped by Ayden Pereira's 22-yard touchdown pass to Grant Hollier with 38 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Layous added a 52-yard field goal early in the second to extend the Panthers' lead to 13-7.

Appalachian State briefly regained control when Chris Lofton connected with Jamel Howse for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 12:15 remaining before halftime. The three-play, 75-yard possession put the Mountaineers ahead 14-13.

But the game shifted dramatically on Appalachian State's next possession.

Facing pressure from the Georgia State defense, Singleton threw an interception that Coby Owens returned 23 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score gave the Panthers a 20-14 advantage with 8:58 remaining in the second quarter.

Georgia State then assembled a 14-play, 73-yard scoring drive that consumed nearly seven minutes. Pereira finished the possession with a 10-yard touchdown pass to DJ Riles with 39 seconds left before halftime. Although the two-point conversion failed, the Panthers carried a 26-14 lead into the locker room.

Appalachian State had an opportunity to narrow the margin before the break, but James London's 55-yard field goal attempt missed as time expired.

The Mountaineers managed to make the game closer in the third quarter, using a 14-play, 61-yard drive to set up London's 37-yard field goal. That reduced Georgia State's advantage to 26-17 with 1:46 remaining.

However, the Panthers answered early in the fourth quarter.

Pereira connected with Rodshaun Dorsey for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 13:44 remaining, completing a six-play, 75-yard drive that restored a 16-point lead. Layous added a 27-yard field goal after another Appalachian State interception to push the margin to 36-17.

The Mountaineers mounted one final scoring drive when Singleton found Lofton for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 5:46 remaining. The four-play, 72-yard possession reduced the deficit to 36-23, but Georgia State answered with a 45-yard field goal from Layous just over a minute later.

Appalachian State's final possession ended with a lost fumble, allowing the Panthers to protect their advantage through the closing minutes.

Pereira completed 10 of 17 passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Riles led Georgia State's receivers with four catches for 49 yards and a score, while Hollier and Dorsey also caught touchdown passes.

Singleton completed 23 of 34 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted twice and sacked five times. Lofton led Appalachian State with six receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Howse added three catches for 63 yards and a score.

Georgia State's defense finished with six sacks and eight tackles for loss. Richard Kramer recorded two sacks, while Tyson McCrary led the Panthers with seven tackles. Owens' interception return accounted for the game's only defensive touchdown.

Alex Mitchell paced Appalachian State with eight tackles, followed by Colton Phares with seven and Kaleb Purdy with six.

The Mountaineers finished with 356 yards of offense but struggled to establish any consistency on the ground. Singleton was credited with minus-22 rushing yards after absorbing significant losses on sacks, contributing to Appalachian State's season-low-looking total of just 59 net rushing yards.

Georgia State also enjoyed a substantial advantage in field position and possession, running 69 offensive plays compared with Appalachian State's 60.

With both teams now sitting at 5-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, the result leaves little separation between the programs in the Sun Belt standings. For Georgia State, the victory came through sustained rushing production and timely defensive plays. For Appalachian State, turnovers and an inability to protect the quarterback proved costly in a game that remained competitive into the second half.

Johnson C. Smith Defeats Livingstone 27-14 in 2026 Commemorative Classic

SALISBURY – More than 130 years after Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone helped establish the foundation of Black college football, the Golden Bulls added another victory to their historic rivalry Saturday afternoon.

Fabian Duncan rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns, and Johnson C. Smith built a 20-point lead before holding off a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Livingstone 27-14 in the Commemorative Classic at Alumni Memorial Stadium.

The victory improved Johnson C. Smith to 6-2, while Livingstone fell to 3-6.

The annual meeting carries significance far beyond the conference standings. On December 27, 1892, Biddle Institute, now Johnson C. Smith University, defeated Livingstone 5-0 on a snowy field in Salisbury in what is widely recognized as the first football game between historically Black colleges and universities.

That contest marked the beginning of Black college football, making the Commemorative Classic a celebration of both the sport's origins and the enduring relationship between the two North Carolina institutions.

On Saturday, Johnson C. Smith established control early behind Duncan and a defense that kept Livingstone off the scoreboard through three quarters.

The Golden Bulls opened the game with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Duncan supplied the biggest gain with a 24-yard run, while quarterback Damien Mazil connected with Dashawn Medley for 32 yards to move the ball to the Livingstone 4. Duncan finished the possession with a 4-yard touchdown run, giving Johnson C. Smith a 7-0 lead with 11:57 remaining in the first quarter.

Livingstone struggled to generate offense throughout the opening half, repeatedly finding itself backed up deep in its own territory.

The Golden Bulls capitalized on that field position midway through the second quarter when a short Livingstone punt gave them possession at the Blue Bears' 15-yard line. Duncan gained 13 yards on the first play and scored from two yards out shortly afterward, extending the advantage to 14-0.

Johnson C. Smith added a 25-yard field goal from Alexis Rosario-Beltran with 18 seconds remaining before halftime to take a 17-0 lead into the break.

The Golden Bulls continued to control the game in the third quarter. A 10-play, 58-yard possession ended with Rosario-Beltran connecting from 29 yards, pushing the margin to 20-0 with 4:59 remaining.

Livingstone finally broke through early in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Andrew McClain found Tikey Hayes for a 68-yard touchdown pass with 11:44 remaining, cutting the deficit to 20-7. The two-play, 70-yard possession provided the Blue Bears with their first points and briefly threatened to change the direction of the contest.

But Johnson C. Smith answered with the game's decisive sequence.

With Livingstone attempting to close the gap, Salen Streater intercepted McClain in the fourth quarter, giving the Golden Bulls possession at the Blue Bears' 45-yard line.

Mazil needed only one play to capitalize, connecting with Reginald Daniel for a 45-yard touchdown with 4:21 remaining. The score restored Johnson C. Smith's 20-point advantage at 27-7 and left Livingstone with little time to mount a comeback.

The Blue Bears responded quickly. McClain connected with Davyn Reid for 70 yards to the Johnson C. Smith 4 before finding Darius Headley for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 3:04 remaining.

Livingstone had scored twice in the fourth quarter, but the late surge was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Duncan carried much of the offensive workload for Johnson C. Smith, finishing with 148 yards on 37 attempts. Mazil completed nine of 20 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Medley led the Golden Bulls with 57 receiving yards on two catches.

McClain completed 17 of 28 passes for 237 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Livingstone. Hayes finished with 89 receiving yards and a touchdown on three catches, while Reid added 83 yards on four receptions.

Livingstone actually finished with more total offense, gaining 340 yards compared with 312 for Johnson C. Smith. However, the Blue Bears struggled to turn that production into points until the final quarter.

Defensively, Jamaris Stevens led Johnson C. Smith with 11 tackles, followed by Taurus Damon Jr. with 10 and Anthony Binyard with nine. Trevagne McCluskey paced Livingstone with seven tackles, while Travis Burton contributed six tackles and was responsible for several stops behind the line of scrimmage.

The victory gave Johnson C. Smith another chapter in a rivalry that stretches back to the earliest days of organized Black college athletics.

What began as a 5-0 contest on a snowy Salisbury field in 1892 has grown into one of the most historically significant traditions in HBCU football. Saturday's meeting continued that legacy, connecting the modern Golden Bulls and Blue Bears to the players who helped launch Black college football more than a century ago.

Duke Beats NC State 41-3 as Nate Sheppard Rushes for 217 Yards

RALEIGH – Nate Sheppard needed just four offensive plays to put Duke ahead Saturday afternoon. By halftime, the Blue Devils had turned their annual meeting with NC State into a rout.

Sheppard rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns, and Andrew Pellicciotta returned a missed field goal 100 yards for a score as Duke overwhelmed NC State 41-3 at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Blue Devils won their fourth consecutive meeting with the Wolfpack, extending a streak that has included back-to-back victories in Raleigh for the first time since 1959 and 1961.

The victory improved Duke to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. NC State dropped to 4-5 and 2-4, suffering its largest defeat against Duke since 1956.

Sheppard, who established a school record with five rushing touchdowns the previous week, continued his record-setting season with 217 yards on just 18 carries. His three touchdowns pushed his season total to 17, establishing a new Duke single-season rushing touchdown record. He also became the first Blue Devil to record consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

His first touchdown came almost immediately.

After Walker Eget converted third-and-10 with a 13-yard completion to Jonah Burton, Sheppard broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run just 48 seconds into the game. The four-play, 82-yard opening possession established an offensive advantage that NC State never managed to overcome.

The Wolfpack answered with their only points of the afternoon. CJ Bailey connected with Keenan Jackson for 21 yards on a flea-flicker to open the ensuing possession, and NC State eventually reached the Duke 22 before settling for a 39-yard Kanoah Vinesett field goal.

That was as close as the Wolfpack would get.

Duke extended its advantage to 14-3 early in the second quarter when Sheppard scored from eight yards out, finishing a 12-play, 77-yard drive that consumed more than five minutes. The sophomore had already accumulated 98 rushing yards in the opening quarter, the fifth-highest single-quarter total in school history.

The Blue Devils then took complete control in the closing minutes of the first half.

Gavin Strange connected on a 25-yard field goal with 3:14 remaining before Eget found Jaivon Solomon for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 26 seconds left. Duke appeared headed to the locker room with a 24-3 advantage, but the final play of the half produced an even larger margin.

NC State attempted a 50-yard field goal as time expired. The kick fell short, and Pellicciotta caught it in the end zone before racing 100 yards for a touchdown. The return pushed Duke's halftime lead to 31-3 and completed a 17-point surge over the final 3:14 of the second quarter.

Pellicciotta, who previously returned a fumble for a touchdown against North Carolina, became the first Duke player since DeVon Edwards in 2013 to score both a defensive and special teams touchdown in the same season.

The Wolfpack's offensive struggles continued after intermission.

NC State managed just 32 rushing yards on 25 attempts and finished with 217 total yards, matching Sheppard's individual rushing total. The Wolfpack converted only three of 14 third downs and punted seven times while failing to score a touchdown for the first time since its 2023 meeting with Duke.

A failed fourth-and-one attempt at the NC State 40 midway through the third quarter gave Duke another short field. Sheppard gained 26 yards on the ensuing possession before scoring from four yards out to extend the lead to 38-3.

Strange completed the scoring with a 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Duke finished with 461 yards of offense, including 238 on the ground. Eget completed 22 of 31 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown, while Solomon caught five passes for 71 yards and a score. The Blue Devils also controlled possession for nearly 36 minutes.

Bailey completed 15 of 24 passes for 123 yards for NC State before Tad Hudson took over and added 62 passing yards. Hunter Provience led the Wolfpack with five receptions for 51 yards, while Amiri Acker contributed 54 yards on two catches.

Nick Morris Jr. led Duke's defense with six tackles, and Preston Watson and Kobe Smith each recorded a sack. NC State linebacker Popo Aguirre finished with a game-high eight tackles despite leaving in the third quarter with an injury.

The Blue Devils will face a considerably different challenge next Saturday when they travel to No. 1 Miami for a noon kickoff. NC State will return to Carter-Finley Stadium to host Syracuse, also at noon.

Greensboro College Rallies Past NC Wesleyan 22-20 on Late Touchdown

GREENSBORO – Chase Altis connected with Jace Jackson on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 2:19 remaining Saturday afternoon, lifting Greensboro College to a 22-20 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan at Pride Field.

The late touchdown capped a 76-yard drive that rescued the Pride after the Battling Bishops had scored 13 unanswered points to take a four-point lead in the third quarter. Greensboro improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while N.C. Wesleyan fell to 4-5 and 2-4.

Greensboro trailed 20-16 when it took possession at its own 24-yard line with 6:02 remaining. The Pride moved downfield on an eight-play drive before Altis found Jackson for the go-ahead score. The touchdown was Jackson's only reception of the afternoon, but it proved to be the game's biggest play.

N.C. Wesleyan had one final opportunity, taking over at its own 25 with 2:19 left. The Battling Bishops managed eight yards before turning the ball over on downs with 1:16 remaining. Greensboro then ran out the clock to secure the two-point victory.

The finish reversed a game that appeared to be moving in Wesleyan's favor after halftime.

Greensboro controlled much of the opening half, scoring on each of its first three possessions. Sincere McIntyre opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the contest, but N.C. Wesleyan answered almost immediately when Braden Selvage found Jalen Moore for a 44-yard touchdown pass.

Camron Torrence-Kelly restored Greensboro's advantage with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, completing a 13-play, 76-yard possession. Jacob Cook added a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter to extend the lead to 16-7.

Wesleyan responded before halftime. Facing third-and-11, Selvage connected with Tyson Resper for a 42-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 16-14 with 4:47 remaining in the second quarter.

The Battling Bishops carried that momentum into the second half, marching 91 yards on their opening possession of the third quarter. Selvage finished the seven-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Fay, giving Wesleyan its first lead since the opening quarter at 20-16.

Greensboro had opportunities to answer before the fourth quarter but came away empty. Cook missed a 28-yard field goal midway through the third, and another Pride possession ended on downs at the Wesleyan 19 early in the fourth.

The Battling Bishops then put together their longest possession of the game, consuming 8:52 on a 16-play drive. However, the march ended with Jorge Hernandez-Lara missing a 40-yard field goal with 6:02 remaining, leaving Greensboro within striking distance.

Altis and the Pride capitalized on the ensuing possession.

Greensboro finished with 404 yards of total offense, including 182 rushing yards. Kyjuan Westmoreland led the ground attack with 80 yards on 11 carries, while Torrence-Kelly added 54 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. Altis completed 17 of 32 passes for 214 yards and the winning touchdown.

Wesleyan quarterback Braden Selvage completed 20 of 28 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, although he was intercepted once. Jaylen Solomon led all rushers with 148 yards on 20 carries, while Resper caught eight passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Battling Bishops finished with 369 yards of offense but struggled to finish drives, converting just one of four red-zone opportunities. Greensboro also had difficulty inside the 20, scoring on three of six trips, but its final touchdown came from well beyond the red zone.

Defensively, Jay Law led Greensboro with 10 tackles, while Brayden Anderson-Sidbury recorded 1.5 sacks. Lavar Williams paced Wesleyan with seven tackles, and Zion Wright contributed two sacks.

For Greensboro, the difference ultimately came down to one final possession. After going scoreless through the third quarter and most of the fourth, the Pride produced the touchdown they needed and prevented Wesleyan from mounting a response.

Blowouts, Upsets and Close Finishes Highlight First Round of 2026 NCHSAA Football Playoffs

The road to the 2026 NCHSAA state football championships began Friday night with first-round action across all eight classifications. The opening round featured several dominant performances, high-scoring games, and a number of lower-seeded teams advancing to the second round.

Several teams made impressive statements with lopsided victories. In the 3A East, No. 9 Wallace-Rose Hill shut out No. 24 Trinity, 68-0, while No. 12 Cherryville delivered a 63-0 victory over No. 21 Elkin in the 2A West. No. 11 Northern Guilford also recorded a shutout in the 6A West, defeating No. 22 South Caldwell, 63-0.

The 4A West featured another dominant performance as No. 9 R-S Central rolled past No. 24 Lincoln Charter, 62-28. In the 8A East, No. 6 Jordan defeated No. 11 Wakefield, 62-21, while No. 16 North Wilkes advanced in the 3A West with a 60-22 victory over No. 17 Pine Lake Prep.

Other notable offensive performances included No. 13 Western Alamance's 56-0 shutout of No. 20 Southern Wayne in the 5A East and No. 9 Hickory Ridge's 59-0 victory over No. 24 Chapel Hill in the 8A West.

The opening round also produced several close finishes. In the 2A West, No. 15 Swain outlasted No. 18 Bishop McGuinness, 49-43, while No. 21 North Lincoln pulled off a six-point victory over No. 12 Northwest Cabarrus, 50-44, in the 5A West.

The 5A East featured one of the night's tightest finishes as No. 11 Saint Pauls edged No. 22 Person, 33-32. No. 15 Maiden also survived a close contest in the 4A West, defeating No. 18 Newton-Conover, 29-27. In the 6A West, No. 16 A.C. Reynolds advanced with a 10-7 victory over No. 17 Statesville.

Several lower-seeded teams also made their way into the second round. No. 20 Polk County defeated No. 13 Charles D. Owen, 28-22, in the 3A West, while No. 23 Lexington knocked off No. 10 Roanoke Rapids, 28-7, in the 4A East.

In the 6A East, No. 21 Terry Sanford defeated No. 12 Franklinton, 54-43. No. 22 Central Davidson also advanced in the 4A East with a 28-21 victory over No. 11 Nash Central.

The 8A East saw No. 9 Laney defeat No. 8 Panther Creek, 47-27, while No. 19 Sanderson knocked off No. 14 South Central, 41-27, in the 7A East.

With the first round producing 105 completed games, the playoff field is beginning to take shape. Teams advancing will turn their attention to the second round, where another set of matchups will bring them one step closer to a regional championship and a chance to compete for a state title.

East Carolina Beats South Florida 20-17 on Andrew Conrad's 55-Yard Field Goal

GREENVILLE – Andrew Conrad had not attempted a field goal in a game since 2024. On Friday night, East Carolina called on the veteran kicker from 55 yards out with two seconds remaining and a chance to beat South Florida.

He delivered twice.

Conrad connected on a career-long field goal as time expired, lifting East Carolina to a 20-17 victory over South Florida and sending fans pouring onto the field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The dramatic finish capped a night in which the Pirates lost three offensive starters to injuries, turned to their backup quarterback and erased an early deficit against a South Florida team that entered with six victories.

East Carolina improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in American Conference play, moving within one victory of bowl eligibility. South Florida fell to 6-3 and 2-3 in the conference.

The winning kick came with an unusual twist. South Florida coach Brian Hartline called timeout just before Conrad's first attempt, but the kicker followed through and sent the ball between the uprights. After the timeout, Conrad lined up again and delivered the same result.

"I knew when I hit it, it had a very solid chance of going in," Conrad said.

Conrad, a Kernersville native in his fifth season with the Pirates, had previously made a 52-yard field goal. His last game-winning kick came from 33 yards against BYU in October 2022.

The opportunity Friday came after East Carolina took possession at its own 14-yard line with 1:42 remaining and the score tied at 17.

Backup quarterback Emory Williams directed a 10-play, 49-yard drive, converting a third down with a completion to Jason Dickerson before finding Ray Ray Joseph Jr. for 14 yards. A pass interference penalty and an 18-yard reception by Ashton Gray helped move the Pirates into field-goal range.

East Carolina coach Blake Harrell said the decision to use Conrad rather than Noah Perez came down to distance. Perez had already connected from 44 yards earlier in the game, but Conrad was the choice for the longer attempt.

The winning drive completed a comeback that required significant adjustments after East Carolina's offense was hit hard by injuries.

Offensive lineman Karson Jones left in the first quarter, followed by starting quarterback Mitch Griffis after a hard hit late in the period. Leading rusher TJ Engleman Jr. suffered a lower-leg injury early in the second quarter.

Williams entered in relief and completed 19 of 27 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Both scoring passes went to Landon Sides, who finished with 14 receptions for 126 yards.

The Pirates trailed 10-3 late in the first half after South Florida quarterback Luke Kromenhoek connected with Brysin Rodgers for a 26-yard touchdown in the opening quarter and Nico Gramatica added a 30-yard field goal.

Williams changed the momentum with a four-play, 65-yard drive in just 40 seconds, finding Sides for a 15-yard touchdown with 31 seconds remaining before halftime.

The connection struck again midway through the third quarter when Williams hit Sides for an 8-yard touchdown, giving East Carolina its first lead at 17-10.

South Florida answered in the fourth quarter. Jason Collins Jr. scored on a 1-yard run with 9:42 remaining, tying the game at 17 and setting up the final sequence.

The Bulls had opportunities throughout the night but struggled to sustain drives against East Carolina's defense. South Florida converted just one of 10 third-down attempts and finished with 329 yards of offense.

Kromenhoek completed 17 of 21 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown, while D.J. Crowther rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries. South Florida also failed on its only fourth-down attempt, with Torin Brazell stopping Kromenhoek on a fourth-and-3 play at the East Carolina 29 in the third quarter.

The Pirates recorded three sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while Gray provided offensive balance with 101 rushing yards on 18 carries.

"You have a guy go down, the next guy steps in and makes big plays," Harrell said. "There never was a doubt on our sideline."

The victory marked East Carolina's fourth consecutive win over South Florida and continued the Pirates' success in close, low-scoring games under Harrell.

For Conrad, the finish carried additional meaning after spending the season without a field-goal attempt. His first kick of the night turned out to be the final play of the game.

East Carolina now turns its attention to an in-state conference matchup at Charlotte, where the Pirates will have an opportunity to secure their sixth victory and become bowl eligible.

No. 1 Miami Holds Off North Carolina 38-35 Despite Four Edwards Touchdowns

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina had the nation’s top-ranked team on the ropes Saturday night, trading touchdowns with Miami and taking two second-half leads before one costly turnover helped the Hurricanes escape Kenan Stadium with a 38-35 victory.

Miami defensive lineman Marquise Lightfoot forced a Billy Edwards Jr. fumble with 5:33 remaining, and Justin Scott recovered at the North Carolina 37-yard line. Six plays later, Darian Mensah found Malachi Toney for a nine-yard touchdown that gave the Hurricanes a 10-point advantage with 2:33 to play.

The Tar Heels answered with another touchdown but could not recover the ensuing onside kick, allowing Miami to remain unbeaten and end North Carolina’s five-game winning streak in the series.

The Hurricanes improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while North Carolina fell to 4-4 and 2-3 in league play. It was the Tar Heels’ third consecutive home loss, although their performance against the nation’s No. 1 team offered a sharp contrast to the final result.

Edwards delivered his most productive passing performance of the season, completing 28 of 34 attempts for 341 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. North Carolina finished with 407 yards of offense, converted eight of 11 third downs and scored touchdowns on all five of its red-zone possessions.

Yet the only turnover of the evening ultimately separated two offenses that moved the ball with remarkable consistency.

“Obviously with a team like Miami, it’s going to come down to critical plays, critical moments,” Edwards said. “We’ll go back and obviously see the strip sack and maybe a few other plays that if we had been able to execute better offensively we may have a different outcome.”

North Carolina trailed 17-14 at halftime after Edwards twice connected with tight end Jelani Thurman on eight-yard touchdown passes. Both scores capped lengthy possessions, including an 84-yard march that consumed more than five minutes early in the second quarter.

Miami had opened the scoring on a touchdown pass from Mensah to Toney, then regained the lead on a 31-yard screen pass to Mark Fletcher Jr. A late field goal sent the Hurricanes into the locker room with a three-point advantage.

The Tar Heels took their first lead on the opening possession of the second half. Edwards directed a 75-yard drive and found Jordan Shipp for a 16-yard touchdown, putting North Carolina ahead 21-17.

Miami responded with a two-yard Fletcher touchdown run, but North Carolina reclaimed the advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Demon June finished a lengthy possession with a one-yard touchdown run, giving the Tar Heels a 28-24 lead with 11:46 remaining. It was June’s eighth rushing touchdown of the season and his fourth consecutive game reaching the end zone.

The Hurricanes answered again, converting a fourth-and-one at the North Carolina two-yard line when Fletcher powered across for his third touchdown of the night. Miami led 31-28, setting up the possession that would decide the outcome.

Lightfoot's strip sack ended North Carolina's possession while trailing 31-28 and gave Miami the ball at the Tar Heels' 37-yard line. Mensah capitalized with his second touchdown connection to Toney, stretching the margin to 38-28.

Still, Edwards brought the Tar Heels back downfield, finding Trech Kekahuna for a 15-yard touchdown with 1:38 remaining. The score cut the deficit to three, but Miami secured the ensuing onside kick and exhausted the remaining time.

Fletcher finished with 43 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, adding 43 receiving yards and another score. Mensah completed 22 of 29 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Toney caught seven passes for 75 yards and two scores.

For North Carolina, Thurman finished with two touchdown receptions, while Jaylen McGill established career highs with seven catches and 69 receiving yards. The Tar Heels struggled to establish a consistent ground attack, managing just 66 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

Miami, meanwhile, rushed for 142 yards and finished with 416 total yards, just nine more than North Carolina.

“They’re very good, very good on offense,” North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said. “One-score, back-and-forth game, and then they got the turnover [and] it became a two-score game, and we couldn’t get the onside kick.”

For the Hurricanes, the victory preserved their perfect record and kept them unbeaten in ACC play. For North Carolina, it was another missed opportunity against one of the nation's elite programs. Four weeks after falling 37-26 to No. 3 Notre Dame at Kenan Stadium, the Tar Heels came within three points of upsetting No. 1 Miami.

North Carolina will travel to UConn next Saturday, looking to turn its season-best passing performance into a victory.

Wingate Erases 14-Point Deficit, Rallies Past Anderson 35-14 Behind Ethan Wallace's Three Touchdowns

WINGATE – A disastrous first quarter gave way to a dominant second half for Wingate on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs overcame a 14-point deficit and scored 35 unanswered points to defeat Anderson 35-14 in South Atlantic Conference action at Irwin Belk Stadium.

Ethan Wallace rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Brooks Brien threw for 254 yards and two scores as Wingate improved to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs outgained Anderson 488-151 and held the Trojans scoreless over the final three quarters.

Anderson (4-5, 3-4 SAC) appeared headed for a different outcome after capitalizing on Wingate mistakes to build a 14-0 advantage less than 12 minutes into the contest.

Quarterback Wilson Edwards connected with Lennix Valarie for a 36-yard touchdown with 5:26 remaining in the opening quarter. Less than two minutes later, Daniel Williams blocked a Wingate punt, and Chase Sturgeon recovered the ball and carried it 10 yards into the end zone to double the Trojans' lead.

But Anderson's offense would not score again.

Wingate began its comeback on the ensuing possession, driving 65 yards in seven plays. Brien found Xavier Jackson for a 26-yard gain to the Anderson five-yard line before connecting with Silas Tate for a touchdown with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs pulled even early in the second quarter. Starting at their own 26, Wingate moved 74 yards in seven plays, with Wallace breaking free for a 31-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 14-14 with 10:36 left before halftime.

Wingate had an opportunity to take the lead before the break, but Gunnar Hilsinger missed a 30-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

The missed opportunity mattered little once the second half began.

On Anderson's first offensive play of the third quarter, J'Von Mack intercepted Edwards and returned the ball four yards to the Trojans' 39-yard line. Four plays later, Wallace scored from two yards out to give Wingate its first lead of the afternoon, 21-14.

The Bulldogs' defense quickly produced another opportunity. Anthony Dangerfield intercepted Edwards on Anderson's next possession, returning the ball 15 yards to the Wingate 35.

This time, the Bulldogs methodically marched 65 yards in 11 plays, consuming more than six minutes. Damonte James contributed several important runs, while Wallace converted a fourth-and-one near the goal line before scoring from a yard out with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Leading 28-14, Wingate needed only one play to put the game out of reach.

After forcing another Anderson punt, Brien connected with Jackson for a 70-yard touchdown with 2:31 left in the third quarter, extending the advantage to 35-14. Jackson finished with five receptions for 170 yards, accounting for more than two-thirds of Wingate's passing yardage.

The Bulldogs scored 21 points in the third quarter, turning a halftime tie into a commanding three-touchdown lead.

While Wingate's offense generated the points, its defense ensured Anderson had few opportunities to respond. The Trojans managed just 33 rushing yards on 19 attempts and converted only two of 10 third-down opportunities.

Wingate recorded three sacks and eight tackles for loss. Gee Walker contributed 1.5 sacks, while Chris Harris finished with five tackles, half a sack and a fumble recovery. Elijah Evans added 1.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble.

Anderson's Edwards completed 10 of 21 passes for 118 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Valarie led the Trojans with three receptions for 59 yards, while Darren Lloyd rushed for 37 yards on seven carries.

The Bulldogs controlled the football for more than 38 minutes and finished with 21 first downs compared with Anderson's eight. Wingate rushed for 234 yards on 51 attempts, with James adding 60 yards on 11 carries to complement Wallace's performance.

The victory marked a significant turnaround from an opening quarter in which Wingate surrendered two touchdowns without allowing Anderson to sustain a conventional scoring drive beyond its initial touchdown possession. After falling behind 14-0, the Bulldogs outgained the Trojans, controlled possession and turned two third-quarter interceptions into touchdowns.

Wingate will look to carry that momentum into its next South Atlantic Conference matchup when the Bulldogs host Emory & Henry on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

North Carolina A&T Beats Elon 13-10 in 100th Homecoming

GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T gave its 100th homecoming celebration a memorable finish Saturday afternoon, rallying from a seven-point second-half deficit to defeat Elon 13-10 before 22,401 fans at Truist Stadium.

Asher Holland kicked a 34-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining to break a 10-10 tie, and the Aggies recovered an Elon fumble in the closing minute to preserve the victory in the centennial edition of the university's Greatest Homecoming on Earth.

The win improved North Carolina A&T to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Coastal Athletic Association play, while Elon fell to 4-5 and 2-3 with its fourth consecutive loss. The Aggies also snapped a three-game losing streak against the Phoenix, earning their first victory in the series since joining the CAA in 2023.

For much of the afternoon, the celebration surrounding the game provided more excitement than either offense. The teams combined for just three points in the first half, and North Carolina A&T committed three turnovers that helped Elon build a 10-3 lead midway through the third quarter.

But the Aggies responded with their longest scoring drive of the game, then controlled the fourth quarter before delivering the decisive defensive play.

Quarterback Kevin White led North Carolina A&T with 97 rushing yards on 14 carries while completing 11 of 23 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. His mobility helped the Aggies generate 170 rushing yards and sustain possessions against an Elon defense that recorded three sacks.

North Carolina A&T trailed 10-3 after Elon capitalized on consecutive third-quarter turnovers. Tyler Owens recovered a muffed kickoff return to set up a 25-yard field goal by Luke Barnes, tying the game at 3-3. Moments later, Trey Woods recovered a White fumble at the Aggies' 27-yard line.

Elon quarterback Brady Stober connected with Zimere Winston for 23 yards on the next play, and freshman Kamerin McDowell-Moore eventually scored on a two-yard run on fourth-and-goal with 7:19 left in the third quarter.

Facing their largest deficit of the afternoon, the Aggies answered with a 12-play, 76-yard touchdown drive that consumed 6:48. White finished the possession with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jayvonne Dillard with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter, pulling North Carolina A&T even at 10-10.

The Aggies continued to control possession in the fourth quarter, holding the ball for 9:46 of the final 15 minutes. After forcing an Elon punt, North Carolina A&T took over at its own 45-yard line with 6:40 remaining.

An eight-play, 38-yard drive moved the Aggies to the Elon 17, where Holland connected from 34 yards to give North Carolina A&T its first lead since halftime.

Elon still had an opportunity to spoil the homecoming celebration.

Starting at its own 18-yard line with 2:13 remaining, the Phoenix moved quickly into North Carolina A&T territory. Stober completed a 13-yard pass to Winston and a 36-yard connection to Alex Voss, while a pass interference penalty helped extend the possession.

But on third-and-six at the Aggies' 17-yard line, Stober was sacked and lost a fumble with 44 seconds remaining. Cadricus Stanley recovered for North Carolina A&T, allowing the Aggies to exhaust the remaining clock.

The final defensive stand capped an afternoon in which North Carolina A&T limited Elon to 201 total yards and nine first downs. The Aggies recorded four sacks, including one each from Kamari Blankumsee, Steven Davis II, Tyrek Brown and Travon Dye. Blankumsee finished with eight tackles, while Brown forced two fumbles.

Elon received another productive performance from McDowell-Moore, who rushed for 102 yards on 25 carries and scored the Phoenix's only touchdown. The freshman surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fifth consecutive game and sixth time this season.

North Carolina A&T finished with 264 total yards, including 50 rushing yards from J.T. Smith. The Aggies converted eight of 16 third-down opportunities, compared with Elon's three conversions in 15 attempts.

Holland accounted for seven of North Carolina A&T's 13 points, connecting on both field goal attempts and his lone extra point. His first field goal, a 25-yarder with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter, provided the only scoring of the first half.

The victory gave North Carolina A&T a winning conference record with three games remaining in the regular season. More immediately, it ensured that the Aggies' 100th homecoming would be remembered for a fourth-quarter comeback and a defensive stop that protected a three-point lead.

NC State Beats California 31-10 in Todd Goebbel's Interim Debut

RALEIGH – NC State began a new chapter in its football program Saturday afternoon with a familiar result: a victory at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Playing its first game since the dismissal of longtime head coach Dave Doeren, the Wolfpack broke a halftime tie with 21 unanswered points to defeat Cal 31-10, giving interim head coach Todd Goebbel a victory in his debut.

The win improved NC State to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Cal fell to 3-6 and 2-4 in the league.

The result came one week after a 31-28 loss at Stanford prompted NC State to dismiss Doeren, who was in his 14th season leading the program. The school also parted ways with defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot and general manager Andy Vaughn, leaving Goebbel to guide the Wolfpack through the remainder of the season.

Saturday's performance offered an encouraging beginning, particularly in a second half when NC State controlled the scoreboard and kept Cal out of the end zone.

Quarterback CJ Bailey completed 13 of 25 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while Davion Gause provided the Wolfpack with a consistent rushing threat, carrying 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.

NC State wasted little time getting started. On the game's opening possession, Bailey connected with Deandre Desinor for a 49-yard touchdown on third down, giving the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead just 91 seconds into the contest.

Kanoah Vinesett extended the advantage to 10-0 with a 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter, but Cal answered before halftime.

Golden Bears quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele found Chase Hendricks for a 30-yard touchdown with 4:58 remaining in the half. After a missed field goal on an earlier possession, Cal tied the game on the final play of the second quarter when Towns McGough converted a 38-yard attempt.

The 10-10 halftime score left NC State facing a familiar challenge: finding a way to finish a competitive game.

This time, the Wolfpack delivered.

NC State regained the lead on its opening possession of the second half, marching 73 yards in nine plays. Bailey finished the drive with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Chance Robinson, putting the Wolfpack ahead 17-10 with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The defense prevented Cal from responding, and NC State added another touchdown late in the period. A 10-play, 75-yard possession ended with Darius Johnson scoring on a two-yard run with 11 seconds left, extending the advantage to 24-10.

Gause delivered the final blow in the fourth quarter, scoring from six yards out to complete a seven-play, 90-yard drive. His touchdown pushed the lead to 31-10 with 9:05 remaining and effectively settled the outcome.

The Wolfpack finished with 327 yards of total offense, including 135 rushing yards. Robinson led NC State's receivers with four catches for 76 yards, while Victor Snow added four receptions for 48 yards.

Defensively, NC State limited Cal to 269 total yards and just 73 on the ground. The Golden Bears converted only five of 18 third-down opportunities and failed to score in either the third or fourth quarter.

Linebacker Popo Aguirre led the Wolfpack with 16 tackles, including two tackles for loss. NC State also recorded three sacks and seven tackles for loss while intercepting Sagapolutele once.

Sagapolutele completed 29 of 45 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown for Cal. Hendricks finished with seven receptions for 67 yards, accounting for the Golden Bears' only touchdown.

The victory does not settle the questions surrounding NC State's long-term coaching future, but it gives Goebbel a successful start and keeps the Wolfpack's postseason hopes alive.

At 4-4, NC State needs two victories over its final four regular-season games to reach six wins. After a week dominated by changes on the sideline, the Wolfpack took an important step toward that goal on the field.

Eight Defending Champions Return as 2026 NCHSAA Football Playoff Brackets Are Set

CHAPEL HILL – Eight defending state champions, several potential championship rematches and a new postseason journey across North Carolina highlight the 2026 NCHSAA football playoff brackets, released ahead of the opening round on Friday, November 6.

All eight teams that captured state championships last December are back in the postseason field, including Hough, Grimsley, Watauga, Crest, Reidsville, Shelby, Tarboro and Wilson Prep. But their paths toward repeating vary considerably.

Hough, which shut out Millbrook 21-0 in last year's 8A championship, enters the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the West. Millbrook holds the top seed in the East, leaving open the possibility of a rematch if both teams advance through their regions.

Tarboro also earned a No. 1 seed after defeating Murphy 22-0 for the 2A championship last season. Murphy returns as the West's No. 3 seed, while Crest, last year's 5A champion, holds the top seed in the 5A West.

Not every defending champion enters with a favorable seed. Watauga, which defeated Middle Creek 47-25 for the 6A championship, begins its title defense as the No. 13 seed in the West. Reidsville, which captured the 4A title with a 50-20 victory over Brevard, enters as the East's No. 5 seed.

The first round begins November 6, with higher-seeded teams hosting throughout the postseason. State championship games are scheduled for December 10–12 at UNC, Campbell and Lenoir-Rhyne.

Tulane Rallies to Beat Charlotte 38-31 in Overtime After Late 49ers Lead

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte was less than seven minutes away from its second consecutive American Conference victory Friday night. Instead, a failed fake punt, a last-minute touchdown and a fourth-down incompletion in overtime turned what appeared to be a breakthrough performance into another painful defeat.

Tulane erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and defeated the 49ers 38-31 in overtime at Jerry Richardson Stadium, dropping Charlotte to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The 49ers led 31-21 after Derrick Eley's 1-yard touchdown run with 10:52 remaining. Tulane answered with a field goal before Charlotte regained possession, still holding a seven-point advantage with 6:29 left.

Charlotte moved the ball to its own 39-yard line before facing fourth down with less than two minutes remaining. Rather than punt, head coach Tim Albin called for a fake that came up short, giving Tulane possession with 1:52 remaining.

Albin took responsibility afterward, explaining that the play had been installed earlier in the week and that he believed the opportunity was there.

"But to be honest with you, I'd do it again," Albin said. "Scared money don't make money. We come tonight to play to win the game."

The Green Wave needed just eight plays to cover 61 yards, tying the game on Trace Johnson's 11-yard touchdown pass to Cam Roberts with 10 seconds remaining.

Charlotte nearly produced one final regulation opportunity when Henry Rutledge returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to the Tulane 46. Conner Harrell's desperation pass into the end zone was knocked away, sending the game into overtime.

Tulane scored first in the extra period on a 1-yard touchdown run by Daniel Bruno. Charlotte answered by advancing to the Green Wave's 3-yard line, but Harrell's fourth-down pass intended for Jaden Barnes fell incomplete, ending the game.

The finish overshadowed one of Charlotte's strongest offensive performances of the season.

The 49ers accumulated 455 yards, including 216 rushing, and scored 24 points in the second quarter, tying the fourth-highest single-quarter total in program history.

Khamani Alexander opened Charlotte's scoring with a 44-yard touchdown run following Jameel Croft Jr.'s interception. Aiden Bui added a career-long 48-yard field goal after Jonathan Patterson forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Tulane briefly reclaimed the lead on a 95-yard kickoff return by T.J. Smith, but Charlotte responded with two touchdown passes from Harrell. A 22-yard connection with Barnes and a 16-yard strike to Eley gave the 49ers a 24-14 halftime advantage.

Rutledge was the centerpiece of Charlotte's offensive production, finishing with 254 all-purpose yards — 121 rushing, 79 receiving and 54 on kickoff returns. His performance tied for the second-highest single-game total in program history and made him the first Charlotte player since Benny LeMay in 2019 to rush for at least 100 yards in consecutive games.

Harrell completed 23 of 36 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Barnes caught eight passes for 66 yards, while Eley scored twice.

Defensively, Gavin Willis led Charlotte with 12 tackles, and Croft added nine tackles and his first career interception. But the 49ers struggled to contain Tulane's offense late, allowing the Green Wave to finish with 467 yards.

Johnson completed 28 of 36 passes for 284 yards, while Johnnie Daniels rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

For Albin, the result illustrated both the progress Charlotte has made offensively and the narrow margin separating its recent performances. The 49ers entered Friday coming off a 38-31 victory over Temple, but this time found themselves on the opposite end of the same score.

"We don't want to just score 30 points. We want to win the game," Albin said. "I don't care if it's 1-0."

Charlotte has now produced more than 440 yards of offense in consecutive games, but Friday's defeat leaves the 49ers searching for a way to turn that production into more consistent results.

Albin acknowledged that the offense could have managed the clock better on its final meaningful possession, while also pointing to the continued development of Harrell and Rutledge.

"There are a lot of good things in there," Albin said. "I know our team's gonna stay together."

For a Charlotte team that had come within seconds of another conference victory, those improvements offered little consolation Friday night.

Dave Doeren Defends NC State Legacy, Calls for Greater Football Resources

RALEIGH – Dave Doeren accepted responsibility for NC State's disappointing football season Tuesday, but the former Wolfpack head coach also delivered a pointed message about what the university must do to achieve the championships that eluded him during his 14-year tenure.

"For this program to become what is wanted and expected, the resources need to match the expectations," Doeren said in a final Zoom call with reporters. "That is the reality in college sports."

Speaking publicly for the first time since his dismissal Saturday, Doeren addressed reporters in Raleigh for more than 17 minutes without taking questions. His remarks combined an emotional farewell to the university with a defense of his record and an assessment of how the transfer portal and player compensation have changed college football.

Doeren was fired less than 24 hours after NC State's 31-28 loss at Stanford dropped the Wolfpack to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The winningest coach in program history departed with 98 victories, four nine-win seasons and a record of sustained bowl eligibility. But he never delivered the ACC championship or 10-win season that remained among the program's most significant goals.

"I wanted so badly to win a championship here at NC State, but I will be cheering for this program to get there under its future leadership," Doeren said.

Much of his statement focused on the changing economics of college football and the difficulties of maintaining the player-development model that had helped define his success.

Doeren described taking pride in identifying overlooked recruits and developing them into productive college players over several seasons. That approach allowed NC State to build experienced rosters and compete against programs with more highly rated recruiting classes.

"We had a way to identify guys, develop them, and turn a two-star or three-star player into a five-star player," he said. "That motivated me."

The transfer portal and the expansion of name, image and likeness compensation, however, made that approach increasingly difficult.

Doeren said programs must now spend significant resources not only to acquire starters but also to retain experienced backups who might otherwise transfer for greater opportunities or compensation.

He argued that maintaining competitive depth has become particularly challenging for programs without the financial resources available to college football's wealthiest institutions.

"For as many great players as we've retained, we've also lost, on average, four potential NFL players a year over the last three years," Doeren said.

The former coach said losing experienced players can leave teams relying on freshmen or redshirt freshmen much earlier than anticipated, particularly when injuries affect the starting lineup.

"Retention and acquisition are expensive and very competitive in the space we're in now," he said.

The comments offered context for NC State's recent roster challenges.

Following an 8-5 season in 2025, the Wolfpack retained quarterback CJ Bailey but lost several significant offensive contributors through the transfer portal, including running back Hollywood Smothers, wide receiver Noah Rogers, offensive tackle Jacarrius Peak and receiver Terrell Anderson.

Doeren did not identify those players individually during Tuesday's statement, but his broader argument reflected the difficulties of retaining and replacing experienced talent in the current environment.

He also acknowledged that financial disparities between programs have become increasingly important in determining competitive success.

"There are haves and have-nots when it comes to how much money schools have in this space," Doeren said.

His remarks were not an explicit accusation that NC State's administration had failed to support him. Doeren praised athletic director Boo Corrigan, calling him a trusted leader and expressing confidence in the university's ability to find his replacement.

But he made clear that the next coach will face challenges that cannot be solved through recruiting and player development alone.

"You can't just recruit a class, develop them for four years, and make them better than everybody else's players," he said.

Despite those concerns, Doeren did not attempt to excuse the Wolfpack's struggles this season.

"I know this year was disappointing, and I take full blame," he said.

The acknowledgment came near the end of a statement in which Doeren outlined what he considered the accomplishments of his tenure.

He pointed to 98 victories, 11 bowl seasons, more than 32 players reaching the NFL and a team grade-point average that he said increased from 2.1 to 3.1.

He also highlighted the program's success against rival North Carolina, including five consecutive victories, and the growth of attendance at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Doeren said the program had changed significantly since his arrival in 2013, when empty seats and early departures were common at home games.

"Carter-Finley is a party, man," he said. "It's special because of you and your commitment to being at the games and cheering on the players."

Beyond football, Doeren expressed particular pride in OnePack Empowered, a university program supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

He said the initiative currently serves approximately 50 students and has a waiting list. Doeren expressed hope that university leadership would find a way to continue the program after his family's final financial contribution in March.

The former coach also thanked numerous university employees, assistant coaches, academic staff members and North Carolina high school coaches who helped establish his family in Raleigh.

He reserved especially personal remarks for his wife, Sara, and their three sons, explaining that one of his original goals upon accepting the NC State job was to remain long enough for his children to grow up without having to move.

That goal, he said, had been accomplished.

Doeren also reflected on the unfamiliar experience of being unemployed after 32 years in coaching.

"I've coached for 32 years, and I've never been unemployed," he said. "These last few days in October, waking up with an empty calendar and no alarm clock, have been very different."

He said he does not know what comes next professionally but looks forward to spending time with family and friends, traveling, golfing and fishing.

For the first time since childhood, he expects to experience an autumn that does not revolve around football.

Still, Doeren emphasized that his relationship with NC State will continue.

"I leave here with no grudges," he said. "I completely love this place."

He also urged Wolfpack supporters to stand behind the current players and coaching staff as the team attempts to recover from its difficult start.

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, beginning Saturday when NC State hosts California.

Doeren said the players deserve continued support through the final five games, regardless of the coaching change.

His departure leaves NC State searching for a new leader while confronting questions about the financial commitments necessary to compete in an increasingly expensive college football landscape.

The next coach will inherit a program with a history of recent bowl appearances, a passionate fan base and expectations of competing for ACC championships.

Doeren's message Tuesday was that those expectations remain achievable, but the resources required to meet them have changed.

For a coach who spent 14 seasons trying to deliver a championship to Raleigh, the hope now is that his successor receives the opportunity to finish what he started.

NC State Fires Dave Doeren After 14 Seasons, Names Interim Coach

RALEIGH – NC State has fired head football coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons, ending the longest coaching tenure in program history less than 24 hours after the Wolfpack suffered a 31-28 loss at Stanford.

Athletic director Boo Corrigan announced the decision Saturday, with Doeren relieved of his duties effective immediately. NC State enters the remainder of the 2026 season with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

"I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride," Corrigan said in a statement. "I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, Sara and his family the best in the future."

Todd Goebbel, who has served as NC State's running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Goebbel has been on the Wolfpack staff since 2019.

The university said a national search for Doeren's replacement would begin immediately.

The dismissal brings an abrupt end to an era defined by sustained competitiveness but an inability to deliver the conference championships and breakthrough seasons that have long eluded the Wolfpack.

Doeren, who arrived in Raleigh before the 2013 season following a successful tenure at Northern Illinois, leaves as the winningest head coach in NC State football history with 98 victories.

His teams recorded 10 winning seasons and reached bowl eligibility in 11 of his 14 years. NC State won at least eight games in five of the previous six seasons, including an 8-5 finish in 2025.

But the program never reached 10 victories in a season under Doeren, leaving the 2002 team led by quarterback Philip Rivers as the only 10-win squad in school history.

The Wolfpack also failed to capture an ACC championship during his tenure.

Doeren's most successful teams came close to establishing new benchmarks. NC State finished 9-4 in 2017 and 2018, went 9-3 in 2021 and posted another 9-4 campaign in 2023. Each of those seasons matched the second-highest victory total in program history.

The consistency represented a substantial improvement from the beginning of Doeren's tenure.

NC State went 3-9 during his first season in 2013 before rebounding to finish 8-5 the following year. The Wolfpack subsequently became a regular postseason participant, developing a reputation for competing against some of the ACC's strongest programs.

Yet the program struggled to turn that stability into championship contention.

The challenges became more pronounced as college football entered an era increasingly shaped by the transfer portal and name, image and likeness compensation.

Following an 8-5 season in 2025, NC State invested heavily in retaining quarterback CJ Bailey but lost several important offensive contributors.

Running back Hollywood Smothers transferred to Texas, wide receiver Noah Rogers departed for Alabama, offensive tackle Jacarrius Peak joined South Carolina and receiver Terrell Anderson moved to Southern California.

The roster turnover created additional challenges for a program attempting to maintain its competitive position in the ACC.

The 2026 season began with hopes of another winning campaign but quickly became uneven.

NC State managed an upset victory over Louisville but struggled against other Power Four opponents. Friday's loss at Stanford dropped the Wolfpack below .500 and ultimately proved to be Doeren's final game.

The Cardinal accumulated 477 yards of offense in the victory, including 303 passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Davis Warren.

The defeat left NC State with four losses through seven games and facing the possibility of its second losing season in three years.

The coaching change also carries substantial financial implications.

According to reporting by Rodd Baxley of the Fayetteville Observer, Doeren is owed approximately $9.75 million for the three years remaining on his contract if dismissed without cause.

That obligation comes as NC State prepares to enter a competitive coaching market while continuing to navigate the financial demands of modern college football.

The university's decision also reflects the expectations surrounding a program that has enjoyed sustained success without capturing the ACC championship its supporters have sought.

Doeren's 98 victories represent a significant achievement in NC State history. His teams reached bowl games regularly, produced four nine-win seasons and established a level of consistency that few previous Wolfpack coaches matched.

But the absence of a 10-win campaign or conference title remained a defining limitation.

Now, the responsibility for taking that next step will fall to a new head coach.

Goebbel inherits a team that still has five regular-season games remaining and an opportunity to recover from its disappointing start.

For NC State, the coaching search represents a major decision about the program's future.

The Wolfpack must find a coach capable of preserving the foundation Doeren established while delivering the championship-level results that remained beyond his reach.

After 14 seasons of stability, NC State is preparing for a new direction.

UNC Pembroke Beats Chowan 38-21 as Josh Ehrlich Scores Four Touchdowns

PEMBROKE – Josh Ehrlich accounted for 365 yards of total offense and four touchdowns Saturday afternoon as UNC Pembroke pulled away from Chowan for a 38-21 Conference Carolinas victory before 6,588 fans at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

Ehrlich completed 18 of 21 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another 136 yards and a score, helping the Braves improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The victory handed Chowan (4-4, 3-1) its first league loss and strengthened UNC Pembroke's position in the conference race.

The Braves have now won all four meetings with the Hawks, including Saturday's Homecoming and Senior Day contest, and extended their Homecoming winning streak to 11 games.

But UNC Pembroke needed a strong second half to put away a Chowan team that twice held the lead before halftime and remained within three points midway through the third quarter.

The decisive stretch came after Chowan quarterback Tyler Adkins found Amir Alexander for a 16-yard touchdown with 8:14 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the Braves' advantage to 24-21.

UNC Pembroke answered with an 11-play, 53-yard drive that consumed nearly seven minutes. The possession survived a third-and-27 situation when Ehrlich scrambled for 23 yards, then converted fourth down with a 5-yard completion to Bryson Simpkins.

Ehrlich later connected with Aaron Osborne for 12 yards to reach the Chowan 1-yard line, where Jake Davids scored to give the Braves a 31-21 lead with 1:12 remaining in the third quarter.

The extended possession proved especially important. Chowan had just responded to an early second-half touchdown with a scoring drive of its own, but UNC Pembroke reclaimed a two-possession advantage and never allowed the Hawks to get closer.

The Braves' defense took over from there.

Chowan failed to score in the fourth quarter despite moving into UNC Pembroke territory on consecutive possessions. The first ended on downs at the Braves' 34-yard line with 7:14 remaining.

The Hawks threatened again late, advancing from their own 13 to the UNC Pembroke 37 before defensive lineman Isi Etute forced a fumble on a sack of Adkins. Myles Hudson recovered the loose ball and returned it 13 yards to midfield.

Three plays later, Ehrlich broke free for a 44-yard touchdown run with 1:39 remaining, completing the scoring and securing the 17-point victory.

The finish capped an afternoon in which UNC Pembroke outgained Chowan 437-281, including a decisive 208-54 advantage on the ground.

The Braves controlled the ball for more than 35 minutes and converted six of 11 third-down opportunities. They also scored on all four trips inside the red zone.

The game had been considerably tighter during the opening half.

UNC Pembroke struck first on a 37-yard field goal by Jared Navidad with 7:55 remaining in the first quarter. Chowan responded immediately, covering 75 yards in three plays before Adkins connected with Dezmond Randolph for a 39-yard touchdown and a 7-3 lead.

The Braves answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive capped by Ehrlich's 13-yard touchdown pass to Malik Brown, reclaiming the lead at 10-7 late in the opening quarter.

Chowan moved back in front midway through the second period when Adkins found James Williams for a 25-yard touchdown. The five-play, 57-yard possession gave the Hawks a 14-10 advantage with 4:41 remaining before halftime.

UNC Pembroke responded with one of its most important drives of the afternoon.

Starting at its own 41, the Braves marched 59 yards in 11 plays, with Ehrlich finding Brown for an 8-yard touchdown on third down with just eight seconds remaining. The score gave UNC Pembroke a 17-14 halftime lead.

The Braves carried that momentum into the third quarter.

After receiving the second-half kickoff, UNC Pembroke needed only three plays to extend its advantage. Ehrlich connected with Jonathan Barnett for a 53-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 24-14 just 1:26 into the period.

Chowan refused to go away, answering with an eight-play, 75-yard possession capped by Alexander's touchdown reception. But the Hawks' offense would not reach the end zone again.

Ehrlich's dual-threat performance was the difference. His 136 rushing yards came on 20 carries, including the late 44-yard touchdown, while his three passing scores gave him at least four touchdowns accounted for in four consecutive games.

Brown finished with four receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns, marking his third consecutive game with multiple touchdown catches. Barnett added three receptions for 69 yards and a score, while Davids contributed 33 rushing yards, 39 receiving yards and a touchdown.

For Chowan, Adkins completed 19 of 27 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

Randolph led the Hawks with five receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Alexander added five catches for 62 yards and a score, while Williams finished with four receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown.

The Hawks struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack against UNC Pembroke's defensive front. Lane Roberts led Chowan with 38 yards on five carries, while Timothy Baker Jr. added 36 yards on eight attempts.

UNC Pembroke recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss, with Fred Giles contributing 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. TaShawn Jeter and Jadin Baptist shared the team lead with seven tackles apiece.

Chowan's defense also produced several strong individual performances despite the loss. Cameron Richardson and Darian Whitaker each recorded nine tackles, while Tayshawn Benson finished with seven stops, four tackles for loss and two sacks.

The Braves' victory kept them firmly in the Conference Carolinas championship picture entering the final weeks of the regular season. UNC Pembroke has now won seven games for the second consecutive season while continuing its success at home.

The Braves will have a bye week before traveling to Ferrum on Nov. 7 for their regular-season finale.

Chowan, meanwhile, will look to rebound from its first conference defeat as the Hawks continue their pursuit of a strong finish to the season.

No. 13 Campbell Beats Maine 35-6 as Sixkiller Sets Passing Record

ORONO, ME – Campbell's breakthrough season reached another milestone Saturday afternoon, as quarterback Kamden Sixkiller threw for a school-record 450 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 13 Camels past Maine 35-6 at Morse Field at Alfond Stadium.

The victory gave Campbell its seventh win of the season, establishing a new program record and surpassing the six-win marks reached in 2011, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Camels improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Coastal Athletic Association play, extending their winning streak to five games while remaining unbeaten against FCS competition.

Sixkiller completed 29 of 44 passes, spreading the ball among 13 different receivers as Campbell piled up 562 yards of total offense. His 450 passing yards established a school single-game record, while the Camels' defense held Maine to just 63 rushing yards and forced two turnovers.

The final margin, however, took time to develop.

Campbell opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Sixkiller connected with Jon Gullette for a 53-yard touchdown. The two-play, 70-yard possession required just 46 seconds and gave the Camels a 7-0 advantage.

Maine answered early in the second quarter after Erv Wiggins Jr. intercepted Sixkiller and returned the ball 30 yards to the Campbell 27. Four plays later, Caden Drezek found Rashawn Marshall for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Samuel Tremblay missed the extra point, leaving the Black Bears trailing 7-6.

The Camels struggled to capitalize on their next two possessions, turning the ball over on downs at the Maine 12 before Alex Crabb missed a 28-yard field goal attempt.

Campbell finally created some separation late in the half.

Taking possession at its own 39 with 2:15 remaining, the Camels covered 61 yards in just four plays and 32 seconds. Ethan Lawrence finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, sending Campbell into halftime with a 14-6 lead.

The third quarter proved decisive.

After forcing Maine to punt on its opening possession, Campbell took over at its own 11-yard line and marched 89 yards in 10 plays. Sixkiller capped the drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brady Ambrose, extending the lead to 21-6 with 9:01 remaining in the quarter.

The Camels followed with another sustained possession, moving 74 yards in 10 plays before Gullette scored on a 1-yard run with 1:13 left in the third.

The two third-quarter drives consumed nearly nine minutes and transformed a competitive first half into a commanding 28-6 Campbell advantage.

Any remaining uncertainty disappeared early in the fourth quarter.

Following a Maine turnover on downs, Sixkiller needed just one play to find Jyron Waiters for a 59-yard touchdown. The nine-second possession pushed the lead to 35-6 with 13:55 remaining and completed Campbell's scoring.

Waiters finished with seven receptions for 155 yards, accounting for more than one-third of Sixkiller's record-setting passing total. Gullette contributed 59 receiving yards and 13 rushing yards, scoring twice, while Evan Austin added three catches for 50 yards and Christian Campbell caught four passes for 49 yards.

Campbell's passing attack accounted for 455 yards overall, including a 5-yard completion by backup Grayson Harvey. The Camels added 107 rushing yards and finished with 25 first downs.

While Sixkiller and the offense supplied the headlines, Campbell's defense made certain Maine never mounted a serious second-half challenge.

The Black Bears converted just two of 17 third-down opportunities and managed only 275 total yards. Maine was held scoreless over the final 42 minutes after its second-quarter touchdown.

Charles Battaglia led Campbell with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. AJ Benton added nine stops and a pass breakup, while Ravel Cato recorded eight tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.

Greg Ransome also intercepted a pass, giving Campbell two takeaways on the afternoon.

The interceptions came on Maine's final two possessions, ending drives that had reached the Campbell 14-yard line. Cato's interception stopped a 16-play, 61-yard march midway through the fourth quarter, while Ransome's takeaway ended the Black Bears' final scoring opportunity.

Maine quarterback Caden Drezek completed 21 of 40 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Evan Wallace led the Black Bears with six receptions for 67 yards, while Marshall managed 32 rushing yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Jeremiah McGill paced Maine with 11 tackles, and Noah Carpenter added 10.

The six points allowed represented Campbell's best defensive performance since a 72-0 shutout of Presbyterian in 2021. It was also the fewest points the Camels had surrendered to a conference opponent since defeating Presbyterian 34-6 in 2018.

For Maine, the loss dropped the Black Bears to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

For Campbell, the victory continued a season that has already moved beyond the program's previous benchmarks. The Camels have now won seven consecutive games against FCS opponents to begin the season, with their only loss coming outside the subdivision.

More importantly, Campbell remains unbeaten in CAA play as the conference race enters its final month.

The Camels will return to New York on Oct. 31 for their first-ever meeting with UAlbany before closing the regular season with home games against Stony Brook on Nov. 7 and Monmouth on Nov. 21, with another road contest remaining between those dates.

Duke Rallies Past Virginia 19-16 on Nate Sheppard Touchdown Pass

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Duke spent much of Friday night chasing Virginia on the scoreboard. With just over a minute remaining, the Blue Devils turned to an unlikely passer to complete the comeback.

Sophomore running back Nate Sheppard connected with Brody Keefe on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 1:14 remaining, lifting Duke to a 19-16 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Virginia at Scott Stadium. Patrick Smith-Young intercepted a pass on the Cavaliers' final possession to preserve the win, giving Duke its first victory in Charlottesville since 2013.

The Blue Devils improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, while Virginia fell to 4-4 and 2-3. The victory also gave Duke consecutive wins over the Cavaliers for the first time since 2012-14, following last season's 27-20 overtime victory in the ACC Championship Game.

Friday's finish required a dramatic reversal for a Duke offense that had not reached the end zone since its opening possession.

Trailing 16-13 with three minutes remaining, quarterback Walker Eget took over at his own 25-yard line and began moving the Blue Devils downfield. Eget completed four of five passes for 45 yards during the possession, putting Duke in position for one final scoring opportunity.

Then came the play that decided the game.

Eget threw a backward pass to Sheppard, who found Keefe open in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown. The trick play capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive that consumed just 1:46 and gave Duke a 19-16 lead.

Freshman kicker Gavin Strange missed the extra point, leaving Virginia an opportunity to tie with a field goal. But the Cavaliers never reached scoring range.

Smith-Young intercepted Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula with 36 seconds remaining, ending the final threat and securing Duke's seventh ACC road victory in its last eight conference games away from home.

The late heroics followed a game in which Virginia controlled possession for nearly 39 minutes and outgained Duke 353-327.

Sheppard had provided the Blue Devils with an early advantage, scoring on a 32-yard touchdown run with 10:59 remaining in the first quarter. The four-play, 78-yard drive included a 35-yard reception by Jonah Burton and gave Duke a 7-0 lead.

Virginia answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive of its own, capped by Jekail Middlebrook's 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal. The score tied the game at 7-7 late in the opening quarter.

The Cavaliers took control in the second quarter, using a pair of Will Bettridge field goals to build a 13-7 halftime lead. Bettridge connected from 21 yards with 9:06 remaining before adding a 32-yarder as time expired.

Duke's offense struggled throughout the first half after its opening touchdown, managing just 37 yards on its next four possessions.

The Blue Devils began working their way back after halftime.

CJ Campbell Jr. returned the second-half kickoff 33 yards, and Duke moved into position for a 39-yard field goal by Strange, cutting the deficit to 13-10.

Virginia threatened to extend its advantage later in the third quarter, but Duke's defense prevented the Cavaliers from adding to their lead.

With Virginia facing third-and-11 at the Duke 30, Ché Ojarikre sacked Pribula for a five-yard loss. Bettridge subsequently missed a 47-yard field goal attempt, keeping the Blue Devils within three points.

Strange tied the game at 13-13 with another 39-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter. A 43-yard reception by tight end Jake Taylor, his longest career catch, helped set up the kick.

Virginia responded with an 11-play, 62-yard drive that reached the Duke 11-yard line. The Blue Devils prevented a touchdown, however, forcing the Cavaliers to settle for Bettridge's 30-yard field goal with exactly three minutes remaining.

That defensive stand proved critical, leaving Duke within one possession and setting up Sheppard's game-winning touchdown pass.

The Blue Devils' defense was particularly effective after halftime, allowing just three points while recording four of its five sacks.

Ojarikre finished with two sacks, while Kobe Smith, Tyshon Reed Jr. and Kevin O'Connor each added one. Nick Morris Jr. led Duke with 11 tackles, followed by DaShawn Stone with nine and Smith-Young with eight.

Duke also forced a third-quarter fumble, with Will Felder Jr. knocking the ball loose from Pribula and Reed recovering.

Virginia's rushing attack presented a persistent challenge. Middlebrook finished with 117 yards on 24 carries, while Pribula added 66 rushing yards despite being sacked five times.

Pribula completed 15 of 24 passes for 158 yards and an interception. John Rogers led Virginia with five receptions for 65 yards.

Duke managed just 71 rushing yards, with Sheppard accounting for 55 on 15 carries. His performance nevertheless carried historical significance, as he surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards in just his 21st game, becoming the 10th player in program history to reach the milestone.

Only one Duke player has reached 2,000 rushing yards faster.

Eget finished 14-of-25 passing for 211 yards and an interception, while Dan Mahan completed two of five attempts for 17 yards. Sheppard's lone pass attempt supplied Duke's only passing touchdown.

Burton led the Blue Devils with four receptions for 59 yards. Keefe added three catches for 48 yards, including the game-winner, while Jared Richardson contributed four receptions for 47 yards.

The victory also continued a strong stretch for Duke under head coach Manny Diaz, who earned his 23rd win with the program and moved into sole possession of seventh place on the school's all-time coaching victories list.

Duke has now won at least five games in five consecutive seasons, just the third such stretch in program history and the first since 1949-58.

The Blue Devils have also recorded 40 victories since the beginning of the 2022 season, three more than they managed during the previous seven seasons combined.

Friday's win was particularly significant given the circumstances. Duke had been outgained on the ground, struggled to sustain drives and trailed for most of the final three quarters.

But the Blue Devils held Virginia to field goals when touchdowns could have put the game out of reach, then produced their most important offensive play when the outcome depended on it.

A running back's touchdown pass and a safety's interception were enough to send Duke home with a conference road victory that had eluded the program for 13 years.

App State Upsets Unbeaten James Madison 34-31 in Overtime

BOONE – Three years after ending James Madison's perfect season in overtime, App State did it again Thursday night.

James London connected on a 40-yard field goal in overtime, and the Mountaineers knocked off previously unbeaten James Madison 34-31 before a sold-out crowd of 33,322 at Kidd Brewer Stadium, dealing a major blow to the Dukes' College Football Playoff aspirations.

The victory improved App State to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference play while dropping James Madison to 7-1 and 4-1. The Dukes entered Thursday as one of just six remaining unbeaten teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision and a leading contender for the College Football Playoff berth reserved for the highest-ranked conference champion from the Group of Six.

The result carried a familiar sting for James Madison. In November 2023, App State traveled to Harrisonburg and handed a 10-0 JMU team its first loss, winning 26-23 in overtime. Nearly three years later, the Mountaineers delivered another setback to an undefeated Dukes squad, this time on their home field.

Thursday's finish was every bit as dramatic.

App State appeared headed for a regulation victory when Henry Hasselbeck found Luke Douglas for a 4-yard touchdown with 5:52 remaining, giving the Mountaineers their first lead of the night at 31-24. The touchdown came just 24 seconds after London had tied the game with a 36-yard field goal.

But James Madison responded with a 15-play, 71-yard drive that consumed nearly the entire remaining clock. Quarterback Camden Coleman capped the possession with a 6-yard touchdown run with just three seconds left, and Morgan Suarez added the extra point to force overtime at 31-31.

The Dukes had an opportunity to extend the game in the extra period, but Suarez missed a 47-yard field goal attempt. App State needed just three plays before turning to London, whose 40-yard kick completed the upset.

London finished a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, connecting from 48, 27, 36 and 40 yards. His performance proved essential on a night when App State managed just 81 rushing yards against a James Madison defense that entered the contest allowing only 16 points per game.

The Mountaineers instead leaned heavily on quarterback Malachi Singleton, who completed 26 of 40 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Singleton also delivered one of the game's most unusual scoring plays, catching his own 5-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.

The touchdown and ensuing two-point conversion erased a 21-13 deficit, pulling App State even at 21-21 with 13:15 remaining.

Singleton's first touchdown pass came late in the second quarter, when he connected with Alexander Sanchez for a 19-yard score that cut James Madison's lead to 14-10 at halftime. Earlier in the period, London had put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard with a 48-yard field goal.

App State continued chipping away after halftime, using London's 27-yard field goal to pull within 14-13. James Madison answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Coleman to Cole Keller late in the third quarter, restoring an eight-point advantage.

The Dukes had controlled much of the early action. George Pettaway opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and JC Evans connected with Braeden Wisloski for a 70-yard touchdown pass in the second.

James Madison finished with 423 yards of offense compared with 366 for App State, but the Mountaineers repeatedly found ways to keep the game within reach.

The App State defense limited a JMU rushing attack that entered the game averaging 223.7 yards per contest to just 92 yards on 30 carries. Pettaway, the Sun Belt's leading rusher entering Thursday, managed 57 yards on 15 attempts.

The Mountaineers also intercepted Coleman once, with Colton Phares recording the takeaway and returning it 21 yards. App State finished with seven points off turnovers while committing none of its own.

Coleman completed 22 of 39 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while Evans added 99 passing yards and another score in limited action. Together, the two quarterbacks accounted for 331 passing yards as James Madison attempted to preserve its unbeaten season.

For App State, Nate Branch led the receiving corps with six catches for 73 yards, while Sam Pickett III added six receptions for 63 yards. Chris Lofton caught four passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Jamel Howse contributed five receptions for 49 yards. Jaquari Lewis led the rushing attack with 74 yards on 13 carries.

The victory also continued an eventful stretch for the Mountaineers under second-year coach Dowell Loggains. After opening Sun Belt play with a 10-3 home loss to Old Dominion in difficult weather conditions, App State rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Coastal Carolina 35-32 last Friday.

Six days later, the Mountaineers produced an even more consequential result against a James Madison program that entered the week leading the Sun Belt in both scoring offense and scoring defense.

The loss complicates the Dukes' path toward a conference championship and a potential College Football Playoff appearance, while App State moves back into contention in the Sun Belt East Division.

For the Mountaineers, the next challenge comes Oct. 31 at Georgia Southern. They will make that trip with consecutive conference victories and another overtime upset of an unbeaten James Madison team to add to the program's history.

Wingate Rallies From 14-3 Halftime Deficit, Takes Down Lenoir-Rhyne 20-17

HICKORY – Wingate erased a 14-3 halftime deficit to beat Lenoir-Rhyne 20-17 on Saturday at Moretz Stadium, winning on Gunnar Hilsinger’s 25-yard field goal with 1:27 left and sealing it when Anthony Dangerfield intercepted a pass with 51 seconds to play.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears fell to 3-5 and 2-4.

Hilsinger’s kick capped a 13-play, 77-yard drive that began at the Wingate 15 and used 5:52, right after Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game. Brooks Brien kept it moving with his arm and his legs: a 6-yard completion to Kayden Bash on third-and-5, a 34-yard throw to Xavier Jackson to the Lenoir-Rhyne 25, and a 5-yard run on third-and-4. Jason Willis gained 7 on third-and-11 to set up the kick.

The Bears got the ball back at their 30 with 1:19 left. Elijah Evans sacked Wells Bettenhausen, the next pass fell incomplete, and on third-and-10 Dangerfield picked him off. Brien took a knee to end it.

Wingate’s defense controlled the second half, sacking Bettenhausen six times, five of them in the fourth quarter, and holding the Bears to 51 net rushing yards. Evans had two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble that Geviaunta Walker recovered. Tyson Brown added two sacks. Dangerfield finished with nine tackles and two pass breakups to go with the interception.

The Bulldogs had to climb out of a hole partly of their own making. Hilsinger’s first field goal, ending a 13-play, 72-yard drive, made it 3-0 in the first quarter. After Bryson Steele intercepted Bettenhausen, Brien’s 23-yard throw to Jackson set up first-and-goal at the 7, but Wingate came away empty, turned over on downs at the 4.

Lenoir-Rhyne then scored twice in less than five minutes late in the second quarter. Carson Spoonts, in for a snap in place of Bettenhausen, threw a 48-yard touchdown to Tye Roberson with 6:35 left in the half. Brodie Bradburn intercepted Brien and returned it 43 yards to the Wingate 15, and LJ Turner scored from 5 yards out with 1:51 left. RJ de Madet picked off Brien again before the break.

Wingate opened the second half with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that Willis finished with a 9-yard touchdown run. After Daniel Deneen Jr. missed a 45-yard field goal for Lenoir-Rhyne, Brien found Damonte James for a 51-yard touchdown on third-and-11 with 1:17 left in the third quarter, putting the Bulldogs up 17-14. Deneen had also missed from 34 yards in the first quarter, and the two misses left six points off the board.

The Bears tied it in the fourth, and the drive could have gone differently. An offside penalty on Wingate during a punt gave Lenoir-Rhyne a first down, Mikel McClellan caught a 35-yard pass, and Spoonts ran 18 yards for what appeared to be a touchdown until a holding penalty brought it back. Bettenhausen was sacked on the next play, and Cole Allbaugh kicked a 37-yard field goal with 7:26 left to make it 17-17.

Wingate outgained Lenoir-Rhyne 398-284 and converted 10 of 17 third downs to the Bears’ 4 of 13. Brien threw for 247 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and added 26 rushing yards. Jackson had five catches for 108 yards, and Willis ran for 90 yards. For Lenoir-Rhyne, Bettenhausen threw for 185 yards with two interceptions, Jarrod Mewborn and McClellan combined for 12 catches and 146 yards, Turner ran for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Christian Santana had 12 tackles. The Bears turned the ball over three times to Wingate’s two.

“Very disappointing,” Lenoir-Rhyne coach Doug Socha said. “This is a game that comes down to one score. We had bad penalties, turnovers, and not good enough in critical moments. It starts with me and we will all stay focused on improving.”

Each of Lenoir-Rhyne’s five straight losses to Wingate has come by four points or fewer. The Bears still lead the all-time series 24-18.

No. 16 Campbell Edges Towson 24-20, Improves to 6-1

BUIES CREEK – Campbell needed every bit of its fourth-quarter defense Saturday afternoon to avoid a Homecoming upset, holding off winless Towson 24-20 at Barker-Lane Stadium to match the best start in program history.

The 16th-ranked Fighting Camels (6-1, 3-0 CAA) stopped Towson on its final four possessions, including a turnover on downs with 1:25 remaining, to secure their sixth victory of the season. The win matched Campbell's single-season record and equaled the program's 6-1 start in 2019.

De'Von Thomas rushed for two touchdowns, while quarterback Kamden Sixkiller threw for 224 yards and a score as Campbell remained unbeaten against FCS opponents this season.

Despite entering the game without a victory, Towson (0-8, 0-4) controlled significant stretches of the contest, outgaining Campbell 442-337 and holding a 13-10 halftime advantage.

The Tigers appeared capable of pulling off the upset until Campbell's defense took control in the final quarter.

Trailing 24-20, Towson marched 67 yards to the Campbell 8-yard line before Zaydaan Faridi's 26-yard field-goal attempt struck the right upright with 14:50 remaining. The missed opportunity proved costly as the Tigers managed just 46 yards on their final three possessions.

Towson's last chance began at the Campbell 45 with 3:02 remaining, but the Camels forced a turnover on downs at their own 29-yard line to preserve the victory.

The decisive stretch followed a third quarter featuring three lead changes and Campbell's most important defensive play of the afternoon.

Safety Kaleb Simpkins intercepted Towson quarterback Jacob Davis on the first play from scrimmage after halftime, giving the Camels possession at the Tigers' 42-yard line.

Sixkiller capitalized three plays later, connecting with Jyron Waiters on a 22-yard touchdown pass to put Campbell ahead 17-13.

Towson responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Davis' 1-yard touchdown run, to regain the lead at 20-17 with 8:34 remaining in the third quarter.

Campbell answered immediately, covering 71 yards in eight plays before Thomas scored from a yard out to put the Camels ahead for good with 4:54 left in the period.

It was Thomas' second touchdown of the afternoon and his third consecutive game with multiple rushing scores. He finished with 28 yards on seven carries.

The teams had traded scores during a competitive first half. Campbell opened with a 21-yard field goal from Alex Crabb before Towson took a 7-3 lead on Xavier Pugh's 1-yard touchdown run.

Thomas answered with a 13-yard scoring run late in the first quarter, but Davis found CJ Schaeffer for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 1:41 remaining before halftime to give the Tigers a 13-10 advantage.

Towson accumulated 282 first-half yards, including 120 rushing, before Campbell's defense limited the Tigers to 160 yards after intermission.

O'Marion Lewis led the Camels with a season-high 13 tackles and a pass breakup, while Simpkins added 10 tackles and his crucial interception. Jordan Jones contributed seven stops.

Sixkiller completed 20 of 30 passes for 224 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Chinua Ezeigbo led Campbell's receivers with five catches for 68 yards, while Waiters added three receptions for 43 yards.

Davis paced Towson with 257 passing yards and 40 rushing yards, accounting for two touchdowns. Pugh rushed for 75 yards and a score, while Cleveland Charlton caught six passes for 88 yards.

Campbell's victory was its sixth against FCS competition this season, establishing a new program record. The Camels previously reached six overall wins in 2011, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Now 3-0 in conference play, Campbell will look to continue its historic start when it travels to Maine on October 24 before visiting UAlbany the following week.

Charlotte Earns First Win of 2026, Beats Temple 38-31

PHILADELPHIA – Six consecutive losses to start the season had left Charlotte searching for answers. On Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, the 49ers finally found them in an offense that refused to stop scoring and a defense that delivered when the game was on the line.

Quarterback Conner Harrell accounted for four touchdowns, Henry Rutledge rushed for a career-high 123 yards, and Charlotte scored 31 second-half points to defeat Temple 38-31, giving the 49ers their first victory of the season.

The win was also a milestone for head coach Tim Albin, who earned his first American Conference victory and his first win over an FBS opponent since taking over the Charlotte program.

The 49ers (1-6, 1-2 American) entered the afternoon having struggled to sustain offensive production throughout the season. Against Temple (2-5, 1-2), they generated 449 total yards, scored five touchdowns and punted just once.

"It's a big win for our program, on the road," Albin said. "Our team showed grit, that's the word that comes to mind in so many areas."

That resilience was particularly evident during a second half in which Temple repeatedly answered Charlotte touchdowns, only for the 49ers to respond with another scoring drive.

Harrell, making his second consecutive start, completed 23 of 31 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also scored twice on designed quarterback runs, including a 10-yard touchdown with 8:40 remaining that put Charlotte ahead for good.

Rutledge provided the foundation for the offensive performance, gaining 123 yards on 17 carries, including a 48-yard run that helped set up a fourth-quarter touchdown. It was his second 100-yard rushing performance in three games.

A defensive stand keeps Charlotte within reach

Charlotte showed signs of improvement immediately, forcing Temple to punt on its opening possession before marching 67 yards for a touchdown.

Harrell connected with tight end Brody Dawyot for a 29-yard gain to the Temple 1-yard line, setting up Khamani Alexander's short touchdown run. It was the first time Charlotte had scored on its opening possession since the 2024 season.

Temple answered with a 21-yard touchdown run by Keveun Mason, tying the game at 7-7.

The 49ers had opportunities to regain control during the second quarter, but a missed 45-yard field goal and a failed fourth-down conversion left points on the field.

Temple eventually moved ahead when quarterback Ajani Sheppard scored on a 7-yard run with 1:38 remaining before halftime.

The Owls appeared positioned to extend their lead moments later when Rutledge lost a fumble, giving Temple possession at the Charlotte 2-yard line.

Instead, the 49ers produced one of their most important defensive sequences of the season.

Charlotte stopped Temple on four consecutive plays, preserving a manageable 14-7 halftime deficit despite an offense that had gone scoreless since its opening possession.

Albin pointed to that stand as evidence of his team's determination.

"We have a turnover and, you know, OK, well here it comes again," Albin said during his postgame press conference. "And we did not do that. We didn't flinch."

The stop proved especially important because Charlotte would receive the second-half kickoff.

Harrell ignites second-half turnaround

The 49ers wasted little time erasing the deficit.

Harrell directed a six-play, 73-yard touchdown drive to open the third quarter, completing passes to Dawyot and Jaden Barnes before finding Derrick Eley for a 24-yard touchdown.

The score tied the game at 14-14 and marked the first time since 2022 that Charlotte had scored touchdowns on its opening possessions of both halves.

Following another defensive stop, Harrell led a seven-play, 68-yard drive that ended with his 8-yard touchdown run, giving Charlotte a 21-14 advantage.

Temple responded almost immediately.

Sheppard broke free for a 44-yard touchdown run, completing a two-play, 75-yard possession that tied the game at 21-21 with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter.

But Charlotte's offense continued to find answers.

After the teams exchanged punts, Rutledge broke loose for a 48-yard gain that helped set up another scoring opportunity. Harrell capped the 78-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Gus McGee early in the fourth quarter.

The touchdown was McGee's second career scoring reception and his first catch since Charlotte's season opener against The Citadel.

The 49ers led 28-21, but Temple again refused to go away.

Sheppard connected with Peter Clarke on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 11:04 remaining, producing the game's fourth tie.

Charlotte's response came on another efficient possession.

Harrell found Barnes for a 21-yard gain, and Temple committed two personal fouls on the play, advancing the ball to the Owls' 10-yard line.

Harrell finished the drive himself, scoring on another quarterback draw to give Charlotte a 35-28 lead with 8:40 remaining.

The 49ers had scored touchdowns on four of their first five second-half possessions.

Defense and special teams finish the job

Charlotte still needed its defense to protect the lead against a Temple offense that finished with 455 total yards.

The Owls moved into Charlotte territory on their ensuing possession, but defensive lineman DJ Burgess delivered a critical fourth-down sack to return possession to the 49ers.

Charlotte then moved into field-goal range, where freshman kicker Aiden Bui faced an opportunity to provide some breathing room.

Bui, handling placekicking duties for the first time in his college career, had missed a 45-yard attempt earlier in the game.

This time, he connected from 47 yards with 1:48 remaining, extending Charlotte's lead to 38-28.

The kick capped an impressive debut in which Bui also converted all five of his extra-point attempts.

Temple mounted one final scoring drive, covering 65 yards in just one minute before Carl Hardin kicked a 28-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining.

The Owls attempted an onside kick, but Charlotte recovered and ran out the remaining time to secure its first victory.

The defensive performance was far from flawless, but the 49ers made several critical stops despite allowing more than 450 yards.

Collin Gill and Kadin Schmitz led Charlotte with eight tackles apiece, while Dylon Womack and Gavin Willis each recorded seven. The 49ers finished with two sacks and five tackles for loss.

A breakthrough for Charlotte's offense

The victory featured several career-best performances from Charlotte's young offensive contributors.

Eley led the receiving corps with six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, setting career highs in both receptions and receiving yards.

Dawyot also established career highs with four catches for 60 yards, while Barnes added five receptions for 53 yards. Jaylen Hampton contributed three catches for 57 yards.

Rutledge's performance was particularly significant. In addition to his 123 rushing yards, he returned three kickoffs for 75 yards and finished with 189 all-purpose yards.

Charlotte averaged 6.5 yards per offensive play and converted six of its 10 third-down opportunities.

Albin credited the offensive line with providing Harrell cleaner protection, particularly during the second half.

"It's probably the cleanest pocket game we've had in my time," Albin said.

The Charlotte coach also praised Harrell's response to coaching adjustments after halftime, noting that the quarterback improved his pocket positioning and delivered throws more effectively as the game progressed.

For Temple, Sheppard provided much of the offensive production, completing 15 of 23 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown while adding 70 rushing yards and two scores.

Clarke led the Owls with five receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown, while Mason contributed 64 rushing yards and a score.

Despite those performances, Temple could not produce the defensive stops necessary to slow Charlotte's second-half surge.

A win to build upon

Charlotte's victory was its 49th in program history and its first conference road win under Albin.

The 49ers scored their most points against an FBS opponent in two seasons, while their 31 second-half points tied for the eighth-highest scoring half in school history.

For a program that entered the weekend winless, the performance offered tangible evidence of progress.

Albin emphasized that the victory should serve as a starting point rather than a conclusion.

"We got a road win in our league, and we're going to build off of it," he said.

Charlotte now enters an open week with an opportunity to recover, correct mistakes and build on the momentum of a breakthrough performance.

DURHAM – For more than 40 minutes, North Carolina watched a commanding lead slowly disappear Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium. With the Victory Bell seemingly slipping into Duke's hands, the Tar Heels found just enough offense for one final scoring drive and one final defensive stop.

Jaylen McGill broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run with 1:53 remaining, and freshman defensive back Kenton Dopson III intercepted a pass in the closing seconds as North Carolina escaped with a 24-20 victory in a dramatic renewal of the Tobacco Road rivalry.

The Tar Heels (4-2, 2-1 ACC) had built a 17-0 advantage early in the second quarter before Duke scored 20 unanswered points, taking its first lead with 4:39 remaining. But North Carolina answered with a 78-yard touchdown drive, then turned away the Blue Devils' final possession to reclaim the Victory Bell.

The victory snapped Duke's two-game winning streak in the series and gave North Carolina its first win in Durham since 2022.

"It was a heck of a football game," North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick said afterward. "I give a lot of credit to Duke. It's a good football team. They're well coached, and they battled hard. Fortunately, we were able to make a couple more plays than they did."

A rivalry game that refused to end quietly

Duke (4-2, 1-2 ACC) appeared headed for an improbable comeback victory after taking advantage of another North Carolina special teams mistake late in the fourth quarter.

With the Tar Heels protecting a 17-13 lead, punter Adam McCann-Gibbs mishandled a snap and was tackled for a 16-yard loss, giving Duke possession at the UNC 34-yard line.

The Blue Devils capitalized on the opportunity. Quarterback Walker Eget directed a five-play scoring drive, connecting with running back Nate Sheppard on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 4:39 remaining.

The score completed a remarkable turnaround for a Duke team that had struggled to move the football during the opening quarter.

North Carolina, however, had one more answer.

Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. helped move the Tar Heels downfield on their final meaningful possession, setting the stage for McGill to deliver the decisive play.

McGill, who had previously lost a fumble deep in Duke territory, responded with three carries for 44 yards on the game-winning drive. His final attempt covered 24 yards and sent North Carolina back in front, 24-20.

The Tar Heels continued to control possession into the second quarter. A 14-play, 63-yard drive ended with Demon June scoring on a 4-yard run with 13:43 remaining before halftime.

At 17-0, North Carolina appeared capable of turning the rivalry game into a comfortable afternoon.

Duke's defense had other ideas.

The Blue Devils first missed an opportunity to cut into the deficit when North Carolina stopped them on fourth-and-1 near the goal line. But moments later, Duke forced a fumble by Shipp, and Andrew Pellicciotta recovered the ball and returned it 9 yards for a touchdown.

The defensive score trimmed the deficit to 17-7 and gave Duke a foothold in a game that had threatened to get away.

Duke fights back behind Sheppard and its defense

After halftime, the Blue Devils began to control the tempo.

Duke opened the third quarter with a 19-play, 62-yard possession that consumed more than eight minutes. Although the drive ended with only a 22-yard field goal by Gavin Strange, it demonstrated the Blue Devils' ability to sustain possession against a North Carolina defense that had dominated the opening half.

Duke's defense then produced another crucial turnover when McGill fumbled inside the Blue Devils' 10-yard line, preventing North Carolina from restoring its double-digit advantage.

The Tar Heels went scoreless for more than 41 minutes between June's second-quarter touchdown and McGill's game-winner.

Duke continued to chip away in the fourth quarter, moving inside the UNC 5-yard line before settling for another Strange field goal, this one from 21 yards, to cut the deficit to 17-13.

The Blue Devils ultimately outgained North Carolina 373-326 and controlled possession for more than 31 minutes.

Sheppard, who entered the weekend among the nation's leading offensive producers, finished with 175 yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 77 yards on 20 carries and caught 11 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Eget completed 24 of 38 passes for 249 yards, a touchdown and the decisive interception.

Duke also received a strong defensive performance from Preston Watson, who recorded eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a sack. Nick Morris Jr. added seven tackles.

But the Blue Devils' inability to finish several promising possessions with touchdowns proved costly.

Red-zone defense makes the difference

While North Carolina's offense struggled through the middle portions of the game, its defense repeatedly prevented Duke from capitalizing fully on scoring opportunities.

The Tar Heels stopped the Blue Devils on fourth down near the goal line in the second quarter and forced short field goals on two other drives that reached deep into UNC territory.

Belichick identified those defensive stands as critical to the outcome.

"They just fight hard down there," Belichick said. "They don't give up on those final yards, and that's really been helpful for us all year."

Peyton Seelmann led North Carolina with 16 tackles, while Gregory Smith III added 10 tackles and two pass breakups. Dopson finished with seven tackles in addition to his game-sealing interception.

The defensive effort came despite North Carolina playing without injured defensive backs Tre Miller and Kaleb Cost.

On offense, Edwards completed 15 of 25 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Shipp led the receiving corps with seven catches for 75 yards, while Jelani Thurman added four receptions for 52 yards.

McGill finished with 75 rushing yards on 12 carries, and June contributed 49 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts.

Belichick acknowledged that North Carolina's turnovers nearly proved disastrous, but he emphasized the resilience his team displayed in responding to Duke's comeback.

"These guys battled all the way," Belichick said. "I don't have any questions about their competitiveness, character, toughness."

The Bell returns to Chapel Hill

The result carried significance beyond the ACC standings.

Duke entered the afternoon having won eight consecutive games against in-state opponents and had captured the previous two meetings with North Carolina. The Blue Devils also had not lost at home this season.

All three streaks ended Saturday.

North Carolina improved its all-time advantage in the rivalry to 67-42-4, while Belichick earned his first Victory Bell triumph as the Tar Heels' head coach.

CONWAY, SC – A disastrous finish to the first half left Appalachian State trailing by 10 points Friday night at Coastal Carolina. But with Henry Hasselbeck taking control of the offense and Jaquari Lewis finding the end zone four times, the Mountaineers turned a frustrating evening into a much-needed Sun Belt Conference victory.

Lewis rushed for 85 yards and four touchdowns, while Hasselbeck accounted for 237 yards of total offense as App State rallied for a 35-32 victory at Brooks Stadium, snapping a four-game losing streak against the Chanticleers.

The Mountaineers (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) trailed 24-14 at halftime before scoring 21 unanswered points to seize control of the game. Coastal Carolina (2-5, 1-2) pulled within three points late in the fourth quarter, but App State's rushing attack delivered the final first downs needed to preserve the win.

"We made some nice adjustments and manned them up a lot more than playing all those zones," App State head coach Dowell Loggains said of the defensive turnaround. "We just made a stronger commitment, you know, to the run game."

That commitment produced 253 rushing yards and helped the Mountaineers finish with 516 yards of total offense.

Hasselbeck, who split first-half quarterback duties with injured starter Malachi Singleton before playing the entire second half, rushed for 125 yards on 21 carries. His performance ranks second among App State quarterbacks in the program's FBS era, just one yard shy of Taylor Lamb's 126-yard outing against Toledo in the 2016 Camellia Bowl.

Hasselbeck also completed 9 of 12 passes for 112 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to Sam Pickett III that extended App State's lead to 35-24 with 6:41 remaining.

The touchdown capped a remarkable offensive reversal after the Mountaineers failed to score during the second quarter.

Coastal Carolina had taken control with 17 unanswered points before halftime, including a 58-yard field goal by Nico Cavanillas Alti as time expired. The kick followed a costly App State possession in which the Mountaineers reached the Coastal 1-yard line before a chop-block penalty and a fumbled snap by Singleton erased the scoring opportunity.

Instead of potentially tying the game, App State entered the locker room facing its largest deficit of the night.

Loggains acknowledged that the sequence required more than tactical adjustments.

"If you want to be the team we want to be, you can't find ways to lose a game," Loggains said. "In that scenario, we found a way to lose the half."

The Mountaineers responded by leaning on their offensive line, their quarterback's mobility and Lewis' ability to finish drives.

After both teams opened the third quarter with punts, Hasselbeck directed a nine-play, 74-yard touchdown drive. Lewis capped the possession with a 12-yard run, cutting Coastal's lead to 24-21 with 7:59 remaining in the period.

App State's defense then supplied the game's pivotal turnover.

Safety Devin Henderson intercepted Coastal quarterback Deuce Bailey, giving the Mountaineers possession near midfield. Henderson had dropped a potential interception one play earlier but immediately capitalized on his second opportunity.

"I feel like it was a game changer play," Henderson said afterward.

The offense made the turnover count, covering 58 yards in 10 plays. Hasselbeck and J'Marion Burnette helped move the ball on the ground before Lewis scored from 3 yards out to give App State a 28-24 lead with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter.

It was Lewis' fourth rushing touchdown of the night, placing him among a small group of Mountaineers to accomplish the feat in the program's FBS era.

Only Cam Peoples and Daetrich Harrington had previously scored at least four rushing touchdowns in an FBS game for App State. Peoples holds the program's FBS single-game record with five against North Texas in the 2020 Myrtle Beach Bowl.

Lewis credited the offensive line for creating the opportunities.

"All week I preached to O-line, just get me the hole open and I'm going to make sure they're satisfied," Lewis said.

While the offense found its rhythm, App State's defense began limiting the explosive plays that had fueled Coastal Carolina's first-half success.

The Chanticleers had scored on their opening possession when Bailey connected with Tristian Gardner for a 21-yard touchdown. After App State answered with two Lewis touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead, Bailey found Robby Washington for a 71-yard score early in the second quarter.

Bailey later threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Ben Verges, giving Coastal a 21-14 advantage before the long field goal extended the margin.

The Coastal quarterback finished with 298 passing yards and three touchdowns, but App State held the Chanticleers scoreless in the third quarter.

Loggains said the defensive improvement came after a first half in which the Mountaineers surrendered too many big plays.

"I don't think we played well enough on defense," he said. "We played just well enough to win the game, but gave away too many yards, way too many explosive plays."

App State's offense provided some breathing room midway through the fourth quarter.

Following a Coastal punt, Hasselbeck needed only four plays to move the Mountaineers 69 yards. He opened the possession with a 17-yard completion to Pickett, then helped set up the touchdown with a 12-yard run.

On the scoring play, Hasselbeck connected with Pickett for a 31-yard touchdown, the quarterback's first career touchdown pass.

Hasselbeck said the offense had emphasized getting the ball to its playmakers during halftime.

"We told him in the locker room at halftime like, 'Hey, we're going to come to you,'" Hasselbeck said of Pickett. "That moment, it was Sam Pickett's time to shine."

Pickett finished with five receptions for 78 yards, while Singleton completed 12 of 14 passes for 151 yards before giving way to Hasselbeck for the second half.

Coastal Carolina refused to go quietly.

Bailey led a 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with Jaden Allen-Hendrix scoring on a 2-yard run with 3:11 remaining. A successful two-point conversion pass to Dominic Lee-Knicely brought the Chanticleers within 35-32.

But Coastal never got the ball back.

Hasselbeck opened App State's final possession with an 11-yard run, and Lewis followed with a 16-yard gain. The Mountaineers eventually faced third-and-1 at the Coastal 39, where Lewis gained 2 yards to secure the first down and allow App State to run out the clock.

The victory ended App State's three-game losing streak at Brooks Stadium and marked its first win over Coastal Carolina since 2021.

For the Mountaineers, the performance offered evidence of an offense capable of controlling games on the ground, even with uncertainty surrounding its starting quarterback.

For Hasselbeck, the opportunity to take over in the second half came with confidence in the players around him.

"A strong part of it is trust," he said. "We got as many guys in that locker room and I trust all of them and I know they trust me."

App State will have little time to celebrate. The Mountaineers return to Boone for a Thursday night Sun Belt matchup against James Madison, with the game scheduled to air nationally on ESPNU.

BIRMINGHAM, AL – East Carolina spent most of Thursday night looking like a team headed for its fourth consecutive victory. Instead, the Pirates watched an eight-point lead disappear in the final 35 seconds of regulation before UAB completed a stunning comeback with a 30-17 overtime victory at Protective Stadium.

The Pirates (3-3, 1-1 American) led 17-9 with less than two minutes remaining and had pinned the Blazers at their own 7-yard line. But UAB quarterback Ryder Burton engineered a 93-yard touchdown drive in just 62 seconds, then ran for the tying two-point conversion to force overtime.

UAB (4-3, 2-1) took its first lead of the night on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Burton to Roderick Robinson II in overtime. East Carolina's opportunity to answer ended when Delvon Gulley intercepted Emory Williams and returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown, completing a 21-point unanswered scoring run.

The dramatic finish spoiled an otherwise strong defensive performance by East Carolina, which held UAB without a touchdown for more than 59 minutes and limited the Blazers to 99 rushing yards.

"We hadn't let them in the end zone all day," ECU head coach Blake Harrell said afterward. "You've got to make them go 90 yards with just a little over a minute to go. The defense needs to go win the game there and we just couldn't get the plays made that we need to make."

East Carolina appeared firmly in control early, scoring touchdowns on two of its first three possessions while its defense overwhelmed the UAB offense.

Williams directed a 13-play, 75-yard opening drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Ray Ray Joseph Jr. The Pirates converted four third downs during the possession and consumed nearly five minutes before taking a 7-0 lead.

ECU extended its advantage early in the second quarter on an unusual scoring play. Williams completed a pass to Ismael Smith Flores, who fumbled near the goal line after being hit by UAB defender Jo Pierce. Freshman Dawson Quarterman recovered the loose ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown, giving the Pirates a 14-0 advantage.

The Pirates' defense controlled much of the first half, holding UAB without a first down throughout the opening quarter for the second consecutive game. The Blazers managed just 91 yards before halftime, while ECU recorded eight tackles for loss and three sacks.

UAB finally broke through with a 41-yard field goal from Jonah Delange midway through the second quarter, trimming East Carolina's halftime lead to 14-3.

The momentum gradually shifted after intermission.

Delange connected from 26 and 50 yards in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-9 as East Carolina's offense struggled to sustain the early success that had produced its two touchdowns.

The Pirates answered with a 13-play, 50-yard possession that ended with Noah Perez's career-long 43-yard field goal with 9:24 remaining. The kick pushed ECU's lead to 17-9, forcing UAB to score a touchdown and two-point conversion just to tie.

East Carolina's defense then forced a turnover on downs with 5:34 remaining. The Pirates used nearly four minutes on their ensuing possession before a 33-yard pooch punt by Perez left UAB facing a long field with only 1:37 on the clock.

The Blazers were backed up even farther by a penalty, but Burton found his rhythm against a defense that had frustrated him throughout the night.

He eventually connected with Braylon McReynolds on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining. Burton followed with a successful quarterback keeper on the two-point conversion, erasing East Carolina's lead and sending the game into overtime.

Burton finished 19-of-37 passing for a career-high 262 yards and two touchdowns. CJ Smith was his primary target, catching eight passes for 119 yards.

East Carolina's offense, meanwhile, never regained its first-quarter efficiency.

Williams completed 18 of 27 passes for 126 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The Pirates finished with 317 total yards, including 191 on the ground, but scored only three points after taking their 14-0 lead.

Running back TJ Engleman Jr. provided much of the offensive production, rushing for 104 yards on a career-high 26 carries. It marked his third consecutive 100-yard performance, making him the first ECU player to accomplish that feat since Keaton Mitchell in 2022.

"It's a tough one to take," Engleman said. "I feel like we had so many opportunities to score. We've just got to clean stuff up man, bring the guys together. We've just got to go score at the end of the day."

The Pirates finished with 10 tackles for loss, marking their fourth consecutive game reaching double figures in that category. Ashton Levells-Mitchell led ECU with six tackles, while Preston Carr, J.D. Lampley and Josh Benton each recorded a sack.

UAB's defense also made several important contributions. Pierce finished with a game-high 16 tackles, while Muaaz Byard added 15. The Blazers forced three ECU fumbles, recovering one, before Gulley's interception ended the game.

WINGATE- Wingate's defense left little room for Tusculum to operate Saturday afternoon, holding the Pioneers to just five first downs and 122 yards of total offense as the Bulldogs claimed a 31-14 South Atlantic Conference victory at Irwin Belk Stadium.

The Bulldogs (3-4, 3-2 SAC) controlled the game statistically, outgaining Tusculum 384-122 while holding possession for more than 37 minutes. Wingate allowed just 50 rushing yards on 34 attempts and limited the Pioneers to three completions in nine passing attempts.

Tusculum (3-4, 2-3 SAC) managed only 2.8 yards per offensive play and failed to score an offensive touchdown in the second half.

The defensive performance helped Wingate overcome three turnovers, including a third-quarter fumble returned for a touchdown that briefly reduced the Bulldogs' lead to three points.

Wingate's offense was led by Jayshawn Appling, who rushed for 109 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Brooks Brien completed 15 of 25 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Aaron Griffin and Xavier Jackson for scores.

The Bulldogs established an early advantage after Geviaunta Walker forced and recovered a fumble on Tusculum's opening possession, giving Wingate the ball at the Pioneers' 42-yard line.

Tusculum answered with its most productive offensive possession of the afternoon. Quarterback Tedros Gleaton connected with Ashton Hagans for a 54-yard touchdown with 1:49 remaining before halftime, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

Wingate responded with a 10-play, 53-yard drive, including a 21-yard fourth-down completion from Brien to Tanner Mays. Gunnar Hilsinger converted a 33-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Bulldogs into halftime ahead 17-7.

The Pioneers threatened to reverse the game's momentum early in the third quarter.
