‘Why did she say that?’: Halep hits out at Wozniacki’s Miami Open blast

Dane said Halep should never have been awarded wild card

Player made return after Cas reduced doping ban recently

Simona Halep has hit back at Caroline Wozniacki after the Dane said she should not have been given a wildcard for the Miami Open. Halep made a quick return to top-level action after the court of arbitration for sport (Cas) reduced her doping ban from four years to nine months two weeks ago.

The two-time former grand-slam champion tested positive for the blood-boosting drug Roxadustat at the US Open in 2022 and was handed the long suspension last September. However, Cas accepted Halep’s explanation that she had unwittingly ingested the substance in a contaminated supplement, with the ruling coming 17 months after she was first provisionally suspended.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur falls short against Alexander Zverev

Former world No 1 Wozniacki makes first quarter since 2019

World No 2 Carlos Alcaraz raced into the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open with a straight-sets win over Fabian Marozsan in Indian Wells. The Spaniard, bidding to become the first player to defend the title since Novak Djokovic in 2016, won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and a quarter.

Hungarian Marozsan, 24, came into the match with a rare winning head-to-head record against Alcaraz, having beaten him on the Rome clay last year in their only previous meeting, one of the shock results of the season.

Coco Gauff shows strength to defy coaches and beat Caroline Wozniacki

Sixth seed Gauff beats Danish wildcard 6-3, 3-6, 6-1

American reaches US Open quarter-finals for second time

As Coco Gauff fought to halt the momentum working against her in the final set of her tension filled fourth-round battle with Caroline Wozniacki at Arthur Ashe Stadium, her coaching team had some advice. Gauff’s newest coach, Brad Gilbert, suggested that it was time for her to hit with more spin, to prioritise consistency and initiate longer points.

But Gauff had already politely asked her team to stop advising her and in one of the most important moments of her season, she took matters into her own hands. Instead of patiently waiting from behind the baseline as instructed, she forced her way inside it and attacked relentlessly. After a tense, physical and fascinating generational battle, Gauff emerged as the victor over Wozniacki, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to return to the quarter-finals of the US Open.

He compared it to a similar injury sustained last year in the grass-court season, which he said needed 10 to 12 days of recovery.

‘Proud’ Caroline Wozniacki back on tour and looking to get better

Major winner retired and had two children but, at the age of 33, is now competing at the top level again

So much of Caroline Wozniacki’s first tennis career was defined by her precocity. The Dane had burst out of the blocks far quicker than her peers, becoming a top-20 player at 18. By the age of 20 she was ranked No 1, a status she consolidated thoroughly by occupying the spot for 71 weeks. Having rounded off her storied career by winning a long-awaited first grand slam at the 2018 Australian Open, content with all that she had achieved in the sport, Wozniacki retired at 29 in 2020.

Yet after a three-year retirement, during which she gave birth to two children, Wozniacki is back. In these early days of her unexpected return to professional tennis, the 33‑year‑old has been charged with drawing on her experience as she tries to recover her former level of play.

‘Motherhood is really tough’: Johanna Konta returns to Wimbledon

Former British No 1, who is playing in invitational event, says transition to being a mum has been hard

“Are you loving motherhood?” was one of the first questions the former British No 1 tennis star Johanna Konta found herself being asked as a new mother. She would respond “yes”, feeling it to be the appropriate response. But now, she’s taking a more honest approach.

“I think the act of motherhood is really tough, it’s really monotonous and boring compared to what I used to do, which is play on Centre Court and travel the world and live a very selfish existence,” Konta said bluntly.

Shortly afterwards, the US Open announced that they had awarded Wozniacki a wildcard.

Wimbledon diary: Wozniacki mix-up and bees bothering broadcasters

Rogue drawsheet sparks confusion, players insist courts are slower than clay, bees swarm and another John Isner record

There was confusion this week when someone looked though the women’s draw and saw the name Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane retired in 2020 and has been busy since, having her first child and now pregnant with her second. It was later discovered the rogue drawsheet was one from 2019 that had found its way into the stack of 2022 draws. Wozniacki is here as part of the BBC commentary team, the first time she’s filled that role, and has been offering insightful comments you would expect from a grand slam champion.

Caroline Wozniacki: ‘Tennis is what I’ve done my whole life … it’s crazy it’s coming to an end’

The Dane is retiring after the Australian Open and says that while she is looking forward to a quieter life she can look back with pride at a grand slam title and 70 weeks as world No 1
Caroline Wozniacki has spent the majority of her life in a fishbowl, her every move monitored and detailed. She never complained, accepting that it is part of the business of being a top sportswoman, that if she told paparazzi not to take photos it wouldn’t do any good. But now she is getting out, and she could not be happier.

“I think I had my first interview when I was eight or nine years old, it’s pretty crazy,” Wozniacki said at the Australian Open. “My whole life I’ve been scrutinised, my career’s been scrutinised. So it’s nice to do what I want to do, not have to think twice about anything. Obviously I want to make right decisions but just be able to live life.

Caroline Wozniacki is preparing herself for an 'emotional' farewell at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old announced last month that the tournament, which brought her a long-awaited first grand slam title in 2018, would also mark the last chapter of her career. Expanding on her decision in a press conference at Melbourne Park, the Danish player said: 'It doesn't feel the same. I still want to work hard, but I want to do something different. I want to try and achieve something else'

‘It’ll be emotional’: Caroline Wozniacki braced for farewell at Australian Open

‘It’ll be emotional’: Caroline Wozniacki braced for farewell at Australian Open

• Dane takes on Kristie Ahn in final grand slam before retiring
• Konta may stand in way of record-chasing Serena Williams
Caroline Wozniacki has done just about everything in tennis – except walk away. So it was striking on the eve of her farewell at the tournament where she won her only slam that the Dane declared she had no idea how she would handle her emotions when she walks out to play Kristie Ahn, the world No 92 coming off a first-round loss in qualifying in Auckland.

Such a fixture would not normally induce apprehension in a player who two years ago briefly returned to No 1 in the world after winning the Australian Open. But the 29-year-old, who used to run marathons for fun and was long regarded as one of the fittest players in the game, has endured struggles at just the time when she ought to be enjoying her best years.

Wozniacki wants last hurrah after bravery loses out to brittleness

After years of burnouts and comebacks, the former world No 1 has seized the chance to leave joyfully on her own terms
Until as recently as two years ago, one of the defining moments of Caroline Wozniacki’s career was the one she spent years trying to forget. Wozniacki was ranked No 1 when she stared down Li Na in the semi-final of the Australian Open in 2011 and it had all the makings of a typical Wozniacki win: she chased down every last ball and gave nothing away, flitting to within a point of her second grand slam final at 20 years old.

On match point Wozniacki changed nothing, but across the net adrenaline coursed through Li’s veins as she made her last stand. She stepped inside the court and seized the moment, bulldozing a down‑the-line forehand winner to scupper her opponent before turning the match around in three sets.

US Open 2019: Nadal defeats Chung, Wozniacki beaten by Andreescu – as it happened

Wozniacki knocked out by Andreescu

Nadal and Zverev through

And Townsend breaks back again, and it’s 2-3 against Cirstea. This game is topsy turvy, to say the least. Mertens is 4-2 up now. Meanwhile, we await the arrival of Wozniacki and her match in the Arthur Ashe court with Andreescu.

Townsend breaks back but faces a real problem in trying to hold her serve in the next, being taken to deuce and requiring a fierce winner to save a break point. Then comes another winner from Cirstea and the need to save another break point. Then comes another, which is finally claimed. It’s 3-1 to the Romanian. Mertens has another break and is 3-1 up on Petkovic.

Simona Halep beats off-colour Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki goes out

• Karolina Pliskova passes tricky test against Hsieh Su-wei
• Wozniacki hits out at HawkEye during loss to Zhang Shuai
For 66 horrible minutes Victoria Azarenka forgot how to play tennis. Centre Court is an unfortunate setting for a bad day at the office and there was nowhere for the former world No 1 to hide when the wheels fell off, leaving her bemused audience to wonder if it was kinder to look away and let her suffer in private.

Rarely can Azarenka have experienced such a dramatic collapse. All Simona Halep had to do was wait for the former Australian Open champion to miss. And, boy, did she miss a lot, three double-faults and 33 unforced errors the tale of a 6-3, 6-1 defeat by Halep, who cannot have imagined her progress into the fourth round of Wimbledon would be so straightforward.

Maria Sharapova beats Caroline Wozniacki in Australian Open third round – as it happened

Sharapova wins 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to set up date with Ash Barty

Defending champion out in third round upset

There’s no love lost between this pair, it should be noted. Wozniacki, a close friend of Sharapova’s long-time rival Serena Williams, criticised US Open schedulers in 2017 for prioritising the Russian despite returning from a doping suspension.

“And when you look on Centre Court – I understand completely the business side of things – but someone who comes back from a drugs sentence, performance-enhancing drugs, and all of a sudden gets to play every single match on Centre Court, I think that’s a questionable thing to do,” Wozniacki said at the time.
