I absolutely love sugar cookies and shortbread at Christmas. In fact, I love the cookies and I love the uncooked cookie dough. I think you could even call me a cookie monster.

That is until I started researching dietary influences on our health. I knew that sugar and white flour (two of the main ingredients in sugar cookies) were things we should avoid for weight loss but I didn’t realize they are basically poisons for our body. Scary really, and disappointing because I happen to love them.

Even though we swear that this is the year that we will eat better, exercise regularly and follow our big dreams it never seems to materialize. It’s easy to blame it on the economy, our stressful job, lack of time or money but in reality the real reason that most of our resolutions fail is a lack of energy.

It’s a great time to relax and spend time with our families and friends. Unfortunately, Christmas has gotten a little too crazy lately. There are too many parties and gifts to buy. What is supposed to be a joyful time becomes a time of obligations and exhaustion.

Using the Energy Management system is useful at any time but particularly at Christmas. It can be easy to over-indulge but we need to remind ourselves of the long-term effects of our actions. Staying healthy and energetic is a year-long process that requires us to be mindful of our energy.

It’s possible to still enjoy the holidays and maximize your energy with a few guidelines.

While the savings can add up, your $5 daily drink could also be an investment in your health if you order the healthiest drink on the menu.

If you order a detoxifying, epigallocatechin gallate rich tea with a side of soy at Starbucks, the barista might look at you a bit funny so it’s probably best to call it by its non-scientific name...

But no matter when or if you celebrate Thanksgiving, gratitude should be a part of our everyday lives.

It’s important to step back and be thankful on a daily basis. While we should always be striving to do more and be more, we must simultaneously be content with what we have. As Oprah once said, “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never have enough.

Back in January, many people made New Year’s Resolutions to finally get in shape, eat better, make more money and be a better spouse, employee and parent. Now that the year is already half over, it’s time to see how far we’ve managed to come. If you haven’t made any progress on your goals, don’t give up, you still have 6 months left this year to accomplish them. Many New Year’s resolutions are actually lifelong habits and there is nothing to stop you from starting at anytime.

If you are having trouble sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions you need to figure out why. Below is a list of possible reasons or excuses that people use and solutions for overcoming them.

I recently read Karen S. Sibert's op-ed in the New York Times called, "Don't Quit This Day Job." In it, Sibert, an anesthesiologist, argues that doctors, in particular female doctors, should stop working part-time as there is a shortage of doctors and our education is subsidized.

As an ophthalmologist currently compressing my work week into three long days a week, I disagree with many of her points and would argue that the solution for our overworked health care system is not to overwork physicians themselves. Overworked doctors may suffer health problems themselves and -- as a result -- may offer a lower quality of care than doctors who are free to work a flexible schedule.
