Recently there was a tragic story of a fit 30-year-old woman who collapsed and died after running 25 miles of the London Marathon. Claire Squires was raising money for the Samaritans during this particular race and participated in other charity events including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. She had raised £500 before her race and after her death thousands of people donated more in her honor. At the time this article was published the amount had reached over £900,000 (1.4 Million Can).

This story got me to thinking about legacies. Claire Squires had a wonderful legacy of activism and even in her death she was able to make a difference for others. Although it is a morbid exercise, I want you to think about what your obituary will read one day. What words will people use to describe you and how will you remembered?

The discovery and expression of our deepest humanity through this practice leads us to be more compassionate, wise and powerful.

I try to meditate a couple of times a day for 10 minutes or so. I think the operative word here is try! More often than not I can't turn off the persistent chatter in my brain. You know the train of thoughts....have to do this, forgot to do that, oh crap I never returned that email....on and on it goes.

She passed away a few months ago and initially it was just too difficult to deal with. Now that more time has passed, I am slowly working my way through all of the items she had kept and treasured. Trying to determine what to keep, what to give to those that loved her and what to give away to good will, recycling and trash.

What has really impacted me is what she kept were things that maybe were not worth much to others but were treasures to her.

As the medical director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, he was no stranger to disease and helped thousands of his patients through their illnesses.

Rather than be angry at his diagnosis, Lipsenthal continued living his life fully each day. He discovered he did not fear death and instead continued to enjoy everyday life and savor even the little things like every sandwich. Before his death in Sept 2011, he wrote a book called “Enjoy Every Sandwich” where he shares how to “find meaning, purpose, and peace in our lives.”

I've been spending as much time as possible with my little guy Nicholas lately. I am happy to say he has always been huge priority in my life, but recently I have felt the pull to be with him even more. I think since my Mom passed away in the fall, I have looked even more critically at what is truly important in my life. The knowledge that you can have it all, just not all at the same time has been even more ever-present in my mind.

How do we know what we should focus on in any given day or at any given moment? It seems like each day is like a life unto itself. Just as a child's well-being is so tied to proper guidance and direction during the formative years, our day's productivity is tied to how we handle ourselves in the formative minutes of our day. We must take time for ourselves at the start of our day. This time will enable us to center ourselves and channel our focus

Single people might spend the day frustrated with the concept of a holiday that excludes them.

Whether you find yourself single, infatuated, or in a committed relationship this Valentine’s day, make sure to love yourself first by putting your health and happiness first with 4 steps.

I absolutely love sugar cookies and shortbread at Christmas. In fact, I love the cookies and I love the uncooked cookie dough. I think you could even call me a cookie monster.

That is until I started researching dietary influences on our health. I knew that sugar and white flour (two of the main ingredients in sugar cookies) were things we should avoid for weight loss but I didn’t realize they are basically poisons for our body. Scary really, and disappointing because I happen to love them.

Even though we swear that this is the year that we will eat better, exercise regularly and follow our big dreams it never seems to materialize. It’s easy to blame it on the economy, our stressful job, lack of time or money but in reality the real reason that most of our resolutions fail is a lack of energy.

It’s a great time to relax and spend time with our families and friends. Unfortunately, Christmas has gotten a little too crazy lately. There are too many parties and gifts to buy. What is supposed to be a joyful time becomes a time of obligations and exhaustion.

Using the Energy Management system is useful at any time but particularly at Christmas. It can be easy to over-indulge but we need to remind ourselves of the long-term effects of our actions. Staying healthy and energetic is a year-long process that requires us to be mindful of our energy.

It’s possible to still enjoy the holidays and maximize your energy with a few guidelines.

While the savings can add up, your $5 daily drink could also be an investment in your health if you order the healthiest drink on the menu.

If you order a detoxifying, epigallocatechin gallate rich tea with a side of soy at Starbucks, the barista might look at you a bit funny so it’s probably best to call it by its non-scientific name...
