The U.S. EPA determined that the sale of C8 fluorochemicals was a danger to the environment, primarily as a result of the manufacturing process and not as a result of the application process. At that time they mandated manufacturers to discontinue C8 technology by 2015 to C6 or below fluorochemicals. A wave of our fluorochemical protectors are in the process of this transition. The C6 or below technology has been fully approved by the United States meeting all of the environmental standards that it sought to achieve. In short, the process toward safer fluorochemical technology is on the verge of being finalized in all of our products.

The issue at hand is that Australia is accepting only C4 technology (Scotchgard is C4) at this time. I have been in contact with our fluorochemical suppliers and they have been unwilling to take all of the steps necessary to get the approval of the Australian government at this time. This has led us to suspend immediately all fluorochemical imports (including leather, upholstery, and hard surface protectors) into Australia from this point forward. The only protector that will be available from us is Encapuguard Green, which is designed for carpet only. This formula does not have fluorochemical technology, which manifests itself in oil resistance and repellency. However, Encapuguard Green does have excellent soil and stain resistance properties. In our opinion, stain resistance characteristics are the most important for wool fiber than any of the other attributes. The comparison between the performance of Scotchgard to Encapuguard Green is in comparible making it a better value for all Australian customers when price is taken into consideration.

Hopefully, this suspension will be temporary and we will put pressure on our suppliers to negotiate with the Australian authorities.

As you may know, the S500 Water Damage Restoration Standard has been revised and is up for public review, before ratification, until May 13, 2013.

As a supplier to the industry, we feel it is critical for you to be informed on the S500 proposed changes because it will definitely change the way you dry structures and materials. Our objective is not to influence anyone one way or the other, rather to identify the deadline for public review is fast approaching. Download the S500 Draft here and read through it to determine whether you support or oppose the changes.

Information containing an opposing point of view has been created by Jeremy Reets and is available below for your consideration.

____________________________________________

To Whom It May Concern,

A draft revision of the next IICRC S500 Water Damage Restoration Standard has been expertly prepared by a number of contributors. They have done a great job as has IICRC of setting standards that continue to make our industry and you and I as professionals better.

I have carefully reviewed this draft and have identified a very important issue contained in it. I have gone to great efforts to present this issue to you because I have grave concerns about the effects it will have on you and the rest of our industry if we don’t act quickly. I need your help.

Whether you are an insurer or a restoration contractor you should be aware of the change in air mover usage that is proposed for the next IICRC S500 Water Damage Restoration Standard. This change reduces the use of air movers significantly without the support of testing. Upon testing the proposed formula, my results have shown a significant increase in drying time. This will dramatically change the drying equation in a very negative way for all affected if accepted. Unless you act now (May 13 ends the peer review opportunity) this standard will be accepted and will create serious problems in our industry.

Contractors will be forced to do more demolition of materials that could have been otherwise saved. This will cause total restoration costs to go up.

The reduction in air mover usage will result in lower rental costs for air movement which will negatively impact mitigation companies that specialize in drying.

The longer dry times will increase the amplification of mold and bacteria in the drying environment. This will increase occupant health risk as well as liability exposure for contractors and insurers.

These are not the results that the contributors to the S500 nor IICRC as an organization desire. The spirit of the document is to improve the standard of care for the drying industry, but this change will not achieve that desired result. Simply put the contributors got this one wrong.

In an effort to help get this right I am making a personal request for you to do three things:

1. Watch the video I have prepared on this proposed change and forward it to everyone you know in the industry. I explain in detail the proposed change, test the recommendations and calculate the impact this will have on you.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO NOW

2. Join the petition requesting this proposed standard language be stopped. I recommend that you and each of your employees fill out the petition included with this email. I will forward to IICRC and the contributors to show them that our industry has a united front against this proposed change. The more individuals that support this petition the better our chances of fixing this.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN THE PETITION NOW

3. Fill out the comment form found at IICRC with proposed solutions to this issue. Every comment you send using that form must receive a response from the committee.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE DRAFT AND COMMENT FORM NOW

I urge you not to take a stand against IICRC or the contributors to this document but rather stand with them. Do not complain by simply restating the problem, instead create solutions that work and share them so that this committee will consider them. Be part of the solution. IICRC and its leadership desire the best for our industry. They have proven successful in caring for the issues that face our industry and will continue to do so with our support.

That said the need for a united effort against this proposed language and formula change is needed and needed immediately. On May 13 your opportunity to provide a solution ends as peer review will end and not be reopened.

I will continue to work hard on this myself and will keep you posted as developments occur.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Reets
Reets Drying Systems, LLC.

Please forward this to all in the restoration industry to make all aware so that we can get maximum involvement in this matter.

Microfibre has become an extremely popular upholstery fabric over the last several years. The first microfibre commonly used in upholstery was called microsuede. So, you may sometimes hear this fibre referred to by that name. Although the name has fooled some cleaners in the past, micro suede is neither suede nor leather.

Exactly what is this fibre and how should we clean it?

Most microfibre upholstery is made of polyester or a combination of polyester and a polyamide fibre (like nylon). Very thin polyester fibres are split and fused with a nylon core. Rarely, you will also find some rayon and acetate fibres used.

Microfibres have a denier (a way of measuring diameter) of 1 or less. For comparison, a human hair has a denier of over 100.

The shape and the extreme thinness of each filament mean that there is a lot of surface area for water and soil to hide in a microfibre fabric. To remove the maximum amount of soil and water, you will want to make multiple slow vacuum passes during the initial dry vacuum step and also during extraction.

Microfibre has a soft luxurious hand and is available in a number of deep and rich colors. Microfibre is not likely to pill like other polyester upholstery. It has intrinsic resistance to water and water-borne dyes and staining material.

Pet hair can be difficult to remove from microfibre. If animals have been on the furniture, remove the pet hair before it dries. I like to use a Dry Cleaning Sponge (AX26) that builds a static charge pulling the pet hair off the surface. A Hair & Lint Roller (AU12) works well also. These tools can be left with the customer for interim maintenance of their furniture.

Although polyester tends to repel water, its affinity for oil and the surface are to hold dry soils means that microfibre can hold a lot of dirt. You’ll want to hit microfibre with Avenge Heavy Duty Fabric Prespray (CU21GL). Remember it takes a lot of those thin fibres to make the fabric. Apply sufficient prespray to cover all that surface area.

By boosting the pre-spray with Citrus Solv (CR08) does wonders to speed up the removal of an accumulation of hair and body oils along with greasy food spills. For the tops of arms, the headrest area or other high touch places that collect a lot of body oils or hair oils, use a clean white towel or even the center circle from a white floor polishing pad for agitation.

Rinse with Avenge Clean Rinse Neutral Upholstery Emulsifier (CU24GL). Don’t press your upholstery tool down into the fabric. This makes lines or marks from the tool more likely. Rather use a slow and gentle movement allowing vacuum to bring the fabric up to the tool.

A word of caution!

Although most microfibre is woven, an increasing amount of microfibre is flocked. This is especially true in lower priced pieces. Open a cushion to inspect the backside of the fabric. The interlaced fibres should be visible on a woven fabric. A flock fabric is produced by giving short fibres an electrostatic charge and gluing them to a foundation or base fabric. Loss of the fuzzy face fibres in high wear areas like the arms is another indication that you may be dealing with a flocked fabric.

Solvents may loosen the adhesive used for some fabrics and allow fibres to come loose. Check your cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area before overall cleaning. If solvents prove to be an issue, clean with Fabric Shampoo (CU61GL) and do not add Citrus Solv.

Because microfibre resists watery spills, some may hesitate to apply a protector, but polyester needs protection from oil! Be sure to finish your job with by applying Maxim Advanced for Upholstery (CP01GL)

The Groom Industries Handi-Brush (AB34) is a real time-saver to groom the nap following cleaning. In areas that were matted, you may want to begin by rubbing a clean white towel or grooming tool against the fibre – usually from bottom to top. Finish with strokes that go from top to bottom and from the back to the front on horizontal surfaces.

An Ace air mover will provide air movement across the fabric – never directly into the fabric – helps assure quick and even drying.

Incorporating time tested “best concepts” in design and engineering provides built-in reliability. Yet the Boxxer XL provides innovative and industry- first features that place it on a level previously unachieved for a machine in its class. Utilizing the HydraMaster Water Conservation System, it can be inactive under a full vacuum load for as long as 40 minutes without wasting fresh water. Whether you are setting up for carpet cleaning, or doing water extraction on a flood job, the “no-dump”/full bypass heat exchanger system means your hot water is used on the job, not dumped into the recovery tank, saving precious fuel every day.

The Boxxer XL also sets a new standard for quieter operation due to innovative concepts and design in routing and controlling the flow of blower air and exhaust gas. The Boxxer XL produces a decibel level of 68db (at industry standard measurements of 12” Hg, 1.6 gpm water flow with closed doors). This is equivalent to the noise level previously only available with clutch drive, direct drive systems. The Boxxer XL is 20% quieter than a comparable slide-in truckmount.

Finally, the Boxxer XL produces performance levels that most truckmounts only dream about – True dual wand capabilities; 400+CFM (static measurement), attains 245◦F temperature (185◦F continuous flow at 1.25GPM); and proven and tested coupler direct driven blower. Time tested and proven frame and drive system reduces vibration and wear on componentry. Accessibility and serviceability with removable magnetic panels makes maintenance a breeze. With a 31 HP Briggs and Stratton Air Cooled Engine, 4007 Dominator Tri-Lobe Blower, and General 1200 operating psi (4.0 gpm) solution pump, you get all the power you need for true dual wand capability at an economical price that may surprise you.

Now that the countdown to the end of the financial year is only weeks away, your cleaning and restoration business should consider the tax deductions and incentives available and analyse whether you can take advantage of them. Have a look at your projeted operating profit to determine whether your need to take action to reduce your potential tax liability. Things you should consider to reduce your tax bill: stocking up on consumable items such as chemicals, replace warn items such as solution and vacuum hoses, have you truckmount or portable serviced, purchase items that can be 100% writen off in the first year such as airmovers. Before spending up big you should check your cashflow, Check to make sure you can meet your GST payment that is due in August. Plus it is always good to talk to a taxation proffessional.
