Leveraging Advocates in Your Job Search

by Thomas E. Kenny. You have followed the advice of career experts and have "dug the well before you're thirsty." Preparing for your next job search by continually building and strengthening the relationships of your professional network. However, now that you are in a job search, you may be wondering how to leverage that network! Asking your network for job leads is not a best practice of professional networking. Instead you need to find and determine jobs that you are a match for and then find advocates to assist you. There are two categories of advocates that will help you land your next position. Group A advocates are the stake holders in the candidacy and hiring process. Thus Group A will consist of recruiters, HR professionals and hiring mangers. While Group B advocates are your cheerleaders and advisers. This is important because your questions, interactions and relationship will differ between those two groups of advocates. Once you have identified a position that you are interested in and are sure that you are a great match for, you need to identify your Group A advocates before you submit your value proposition (targeted cover letter and resume). The number one best source for finding Group A advocates is LinkedIn. When performing a search for these advocates the following are useful keywords: Sourcing, Talent, HR, Human Resources, Recruiter. However, if you don't find advocates on LinkedIn there are many other sources to search such as the company's web site, Manta, and other social networking sites. Also don't forget your offline network which may consist of family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances who may have connections at the target company. It's also important to find Group B advocates at the target company since these people can help you understand the best way to position your skills, talents and experience. Each corporation has a different culture and processes, thus business intelligence on the most effective way to navigate the system of gate keepers is valuable information. I've known qualified candidates that were great matches for positions, but they missed out on opportunities, because they didn't present their skills in the proper manner for the target company. You need to speak their language and after all isn't that what a targeted resume is about!? Once you've identified both Group A and B advocates for a position you'll be armed with the information and support system to most effectively get through the hiring process. In conclusion, no matter what the out come of the process, remember that your advocates have exerted time and effort in assisting you, so be sure to thank them appropriately!

Tomorrow you're delivering a sales presentation to your company's biggest client. Your boss and the client company's CEO will be there. A lot's riding on a deal going through; what you say and how you say it will really count.

But you're not anxious. On the contrary, you're charged up. You feel sharp and focused. You've got a solid command of your material and know the client's needs well. Looking one last time through your slide deck, you recall a story the company's CEO once told you about his business that you can work into the introduction to make it that much stronger.

If you recognize something of yourself and your experience in this scenario, you know that a certain amount of stress, in the right circumstances, can enhance performance. Whether we're competing in a sporting event, presenting a closing argument to a jury, or negotiating the terms of a business deal, the adrenaline surge triggered by stress increases our focus and heightens our efficiency, enabling us to perform at the top of our game.

Yet we also know that stress, far from enhancing performance, sometimes undermines it. When our stress level is too high or the stress has lasted too long, we can't concentrate. Creativity fizzles out and frustration sets in. We become distracted, forgetful, irritable.

So where's the boundary between good stress and bad stress? And how do we know when we're close to crossing that line so we can make sure we don't?

To find out, we spoke to Herbert Benson, M.D., director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine (Boston), and Peg Baim, the institute's clinical director of training.

The physiology of stress The first step in monitoring and managing stress is understanding our physiological responses to stressors, says Benson, who is also an associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Stress activates the body's fight-or-flight response: heart rate and blood pressure go up, and several hormones are released into the blood stream, the most important of which are epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) and cortisol.

In the short term, these hormones boost our focus, memory, and creativity. A century ago, Harvard researchers Robert M. Yerkes and John D. Dodson calibrated the relationship between stress arousal and performance, finding that as stress goes up, so do efficiency and performance. However, once stress exceeds a certain level, they noted, its benefits disappear and performance declines. Mental flexibility, concentration, and mood all take a hit.

This relationship between performance and stress has been dubbed the Yerkes-Dodson law. This graphic represents it:

Identify your personal stress-response pattern Everyone reacts to stress differently; X amount of stress might be energizing for you but debilitating for your neighbor. How people respond when their stress levels are getting too high is also individual, although a person's response tends to be consistent over time. The symptoms of excess stress may be physical, cognitive, or affective (relating to mood) — or some combination thereof.

To recognize how you respond when you're edging closer to the downward slope of the Yerkes-Dodson curve:

Pay attention to your attention. After a solid stretch of productive work, do you suddenly find yourself compelled to check out the latest sports scores online or pay a visit to the vending machines? Are you having difficulty maintaining the focus and energy you applied to your work a half-hour ago?
Take note of your mood. Are you less optimistic about the outcome of your project than you were an hour into it? Has your excitement about tackling a knotty challenge shifted to frustration?
Assess your stamina. Do you feel like you're running out of steam? That you've hit a brick wall?
Listen to your body. Do you suddenly have heartburn? A headache? What about back pain, dizziness, or a racing pulse?

Other symptoms are more subtle. Some people fall into negative thought patterns: Minor issues seem like major setbacks. Their view of people and situations loses nuance and becomes black-or-white, all-or-nothing. Other people become perfectionist task masters who hold the bar unrealistically high and overreact to mistakes, both theirs and others.

Another way to identify your individual stress response is to reflect on how you feel and act when you are deeply relaxed. "What are you like when you have less stress in your life or when you are on vacation?" asks Baim. "Do you still get headaches?"

Managing stress and counteracting its effects When you've learned to recognize when your stress level is getting too high, you can take steps to control it before it takes control of you. If you've been working furiously on a project or problem and one or more of your usual stress-response symptoms occurs, step away from your work. Engage in an activity that calmly engages you, such as yoga, knitting, or going for a walk. Visiting an art museum counts; visiting a Web site does not. Similarly, watching TV is out. But looking intently and meditatively at a painting in your home or office may be an effective way for you to dial down the stress.

Benson and Baim especially recommend meditation to activate what they call the relaxation response. All you need are a quiet place and 10 to 20 minutes during which you repeat a word, sound, phrase, or gesture. When everyday thoughts intrude, as they inevitably will, calmly disregard them and refocus on the repetitive activity.

The relaxation response is elicited by breaking the train of everyday thought. It counteracts the fight-or-flight response, decreasing metabolism, slowing heart rate and breathing, and lowering blood pressure. In fact, Benson's most recent research shows that eliciting the relaxation response can bring about physiological changes that offset the harmful effects of stress. Given the costs to employers when their employees are overdosing on stress, Benson suggests that "managers should find or create a space where people can go to alleviate stress and evoke their own relaxation response."

Baim agrees. "If stress is a mainstream condition," she says, "then we should make the buffers mainstream as well."

Making some lifestyle changes can also help you keep stress in check:

Get enough sleep. Dozing in front of the TV doesn't count — you need deep, regenerative sleep. "If you are dreaming, that's a good sign," she says.
Exercise. A walk around the block at lunchtime will do more for your productivity than downing a hasty lunch hunched in front of your computer.
Eat a balanced diet containing plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Avoid negative expectations. Baim recommends starting your day by mentally playing it out in ways that are in your best interest. "If you are seeing yourself doing a good job, you are more inclined to move in that direction," she says. And giving your mind a break from counterproductive thinking helps neutralize the mental and physical toll exacted by stress.

THE FIVE RULES OF HARO

The FIVE RULES OF HARO. Keep them as a sign upon thy hands.

1) You will get three emails a day, M-F, with reporter queries from reporters and outlets from all over the world. Scan the emails, and if you’re knowledgeable about any of the topics, answer the reporter directly. 2) Don’t SPAM reporters with off-topic pitches in response to their queries. 3) You MAY forward queries to friends, but DO NOT post them on blogs or anywhere on the web. 4) You’re not allowed to harvest the reporter email addresses in the HARO emails for any reason. 5) Be excellent to each other.

Violating any of the above rules is punishable by any of the following: An email, a warning, being banned from the list, and in extreme cases, being “outed” to the over ~~33,000~~ ~~36,000~~49,000 members of the list. HARO works on mutual trust and support. Don’t violate that.

That’s it. Don’t say you never saw them.

2008 End of Year Review

So last January, the Carpool Club decided to see if any of us could complete Elementary School again and began quizzing each other using the "...Smarter than a 5th Grader..." daily calendar. Each month we would have one carpool dedicated to asking the month's set of questions and then reviewing the previously completed questions. Since5 January 2009 was the first "full" carpool of the year, we decided that Juicy and Chester would have the official End of Year Exam. Take my word that it was very competitive (although Chester had not previously shown any signs of being able to hang with Juicy. When all was said and done, Juicy had correctly answered 169 questions first and Chester had correctly answered 140 questions first. They both can move to Junior High...again.

New Year's Resolutions

It's officially the time for all of us to lie, even if we don't mean to do so. Even the best carpooler is only 60% effective on maintaining true to new NY Resolutions...hardly a passing grade even in the most gracious schools. Regardless, here we go: Juicy - 10 pushups a day ("Hey -- if I'm down doing 10, I'll surely do more.") Chester - Maintaining last year's resolution for healthy eating and not going to the office's "mini-mart" Dash - I'll post to the blog (what do you know, resolution met -- I'm done for the year) Have a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Just a Quick Note

I simply cannot believe it is going to be 2009 tomorrow! This past year has been nothing short of action packed for me and my family.

As you know, my grandmother passed away last month and earlier this year my father had some severe health issues (thankfully, he is on the mend). While both of these events were particularly trying for us all, it reaffirmed for me how tight knit a group we are! I am truly blessed to have been born into this clan!

In July of this year we had a fantastic addition to our family – Sean James – my nephew! Here he is with my dad – a very proud grandfather indeed! I know I am biased, but this is the happiest little guy I have ever been around…and it is contagious.

Curiously enough, this action – ebb and flow – has mirrored itself professionally as well. This year I have shifted my primary focus from headhunting and you have seen the ground swell that has taken Build the Career You Deserve to new heights in a very short period of time (the webinars, my coaching program, the blog…the list goes on). But that is just the beginning.

In January, I will unveil some huge, new solutions for you and your job search. These will include:

A kippah or yarmulke (also called a kappel) is a thin, slightly-rounded skullcap traditionally worn at all times by Orthodox Jewish men, and sometimes by both men and women in Conservative and Reform communities during services and other religious rituals. Its use is associated with demonstrating respect and reverence for God.^[1

Traditions

The kippah is traditionally worn by Jewish men. Observant Jewish women who have been married (including widows and divorcees) cover their heads more completely with scarves,hats, or wigs, but for a totally different reason. The tradition for women comes from a different source than that of men and originates from the laws dealing with the sotah (suspected adulteress; see Numbers 5), implying that a Jewish married woman should cover her hair under normal circumstances.^[12] Today, some women — mainly Reform and Conservative Jews — wear a kippah. Some Jews wear kippot only while praying, eating, reciting a blessing, or studying Jewish religious texts.

In modern contexts, it is also common for non-religious Jews or even non-Jews to wear a simple kippah, or to cover their heads as a sign of respect, when present at Jewish religious services or at ostensibly Jewish sites, such as Yad Vashem and the Western Wall. Male Jews and non-Jews alike are asked to don a skullcap in the vicinity of the Western Wall, and returnable skullcaps are provided for this use.

Any form of head covering is acceptable according to halakha (Jewish law). There are no hard and fast rules on the subject, although the compact, lightweight nature of a kippah, along with the fact that hats for men have fallen out of fashion in the West over last few decades, may have contributed to its popularity. Kippot have become identified as a symbol of Judaism over the last century. Haredi men, who mostly wear large black cloth or velvet kippot, often wear fedoras with their kippot underneath. In the Hasidic community, this double head-covering has Kabbalistic meaning and women in Conservative andReform communities during services and other religious rituals. Its use is associated with demonstrating respect and reverence for God.^[1]

A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, 'Mexifornia,' explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California . He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream. Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States . He said, 'If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'' Here is how they do it,' Lamm said: 'First, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.' Lamm said, 'I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities.' 'Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school.' 'My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority plation..' 'My sixth plan for America 's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. Religion and Its Role Are in Dispute at the Service Academies

Three years after a scandal at the Air Force Academy over the evangelizing of cadets by Christian staff and faculty members, students and staff at West Point and the Naval Academy are complaining that their schools, too, have pushed religion on cadets and midshipmen.

The controversy led the Air Force to adopt guidelines that discourage public prayers at official events or meetings. And while those rules do not apply to other branches of the service, critics say the new complaints raise questions about the military’s commitment to policies against imposing religion on its members.

Religion in the military has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years, especially because the close confines of military life often put two larger societal trends — the rise of evangelicals and the rise of people of no organized faith — onto a collision course.

At the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., nine midshipmen recently asked the American Civil Liberties Union to petition the school to abolish daily prayer at weekday lunch, where attendance is mandatory. The midshipmen and the A.C.L.U. assert that the practice is unconstitutional, based in large part on a 2004 appellate court ruling against a similar prayer at the Virginia Military Institute. The civil liberties group has threatened legal action if the policy is not changed.

But the academy is not persuaded.

“The academy does not intend to change its practice of offering midshipmen an opportunity for prayer or devotional thought during noon meal announcements,” Cmdr. Ed Austin, an academy spokesman, said in an e-mail message.

In interviews at West Point, seven cadets, two officers and a former chaplain said that religion, especially evangelical Christianity, was a constant at the academy. They said that until recently, cadets who did not attend religious services during basic training were sometimes referred to as “heathens.” They said mandatory banquets begin with prayer, including a reading from the Bible at a recent gala.

But most of their complaints center on Maj. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, until recently the academy’s top military leader and, since early May, the commander of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. The cadets and staff said General Caslen, as commandant of cadets at West Point, routinely brought up God in speeches at events cadets were required to attend.

In his farewell speech to the cadet corps this spring, General Caslen told them: “Draw your strength in the days ahead from your faith in God. Let it be the moral compass that guides you in the decisions you make.”

The groups of cadets and midshipmen, who do not know each other, echo the same view: that the military, regardless of its official policies, by emphasizing religion, especially Christianity, at events that students are required to attend sends the message that to be considered successful officers they have to believe in God.

“Nowhere does it say that you have to be a good Christian officer or Jewish officer or Muslim officer: You need to be an officer dedicated to the Constitution of the United States,” said Steven Warner, who graduated from West Point last month. “They tell us as an officer you have to put everything aside, all your personal stuff. But religion is the one thing they encourage you to wear on your sleeve.”

Cynthia Lindenmeyer, a 1990 West Point graduate who was a civilian chaplain at the school from 2000 to 2007, offered a similar view.

“As a cadet, you are at a very vulnerable place in your spiritual development,” she said, “and you want to be like the people who mentor you.”

Col. Bryan Hilferty, a West Point spokesman, rejected the idea that the academy endorses religion, even tacitly, or that General Caslen had said anything inappropriate in his time there. And others, including many cadets, endorsed that view.

In interviews on campus, 15 randomly selected cadets said that they did not feel religion was foisted upon them.

“There is a spiritual aspect here that people feel is part of the development of an officer,” said Brad Hoelscher, who graduated last month, “but not a specific brand of religion or even religion itself.”

Col. John J. Cook III, head chaplain at West Point, said, “No one is pushing them to believe.”

Referring to prayers at mandatory settings, he said: “This is something we have done in the military for centuries. It is not designed to make people religious. The majority of people here are people of faith, and a prayer asks God’s blessing on a gathering and on the food.”

The Air Force, however, took a different view in the guidelines it adopted in 2005. For example, the guidelines say: “Supervisors, commanders and leaders at every level bear a special responsibility to ensure their words and actions cannot reasonably be construed as either official endorsement or disapproval of the decisions of individuals to hold particular religious beliefs or to hold no religious beliefs.”

Since the Air Force investigation, controversies over religion in the military have continued. Last year, the Army inspector general issued a report critical of seven officers, including four generals, who appeared, in uniform and in violation of military regulations, in a 2006 fund-raising video for the Christian Embassy, an evangelical Bible study group. General Caslen was among the officers.

The cadets and midshipmen do not claim practices at West Point and the Naval Academy are as egregious as those at the Air Force Academy, which were found to include expressions of anti-Semitism, official sponsorship of a showing of “The Passion of the Christ” and a locker room banner that said athletes played for “Team Jesus.” But given the vast authority superiors have over subordinates in the military, prayer and repeated mention of God in mandatory settings can communicate a requirement to be religious, military and legal experts said.

“You always have to be aware of the authority you have within your rank and uniform and the coercive potential of that authority,” said Robert Tuttle, a constitutional law expert and professor at George Washington University Law School whose father is a retired four-star Army general

At the Naval Academy, midshipmen have contacted the A.C.L.U. over the years, questioning the constitutionality of the noon meal prayer, especially after the 2004 court ruling, said Debbie Jeon, legal director of the group’s Maryland organization.

No midshipmen have wanted to take action until now, Ms. Jeon said. Three recent graduates, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, said that all 4,300 midshipmen enter the noon meal together and that before they eat they are invited to pray by a chaplain. The academy’s eight chaplains are all officers, and all but one are Christian. Those midshipmen who do not bow their heads with their hands clasped in front are conspicuous, they said, which makes some, especially underclassmen, feel very uncomfortable.

“By these people talking everyday, whether they make it voluntary or not, they make it very clear that this is the standard, and the standard is Judaism or Christianity,” said a recent graduate who was raised Roman Catholic but is now an atheist. “I feel it’s inappropriate to have this in a public institution.”

The midshipmen used an anonymous feedback system at the academy to voice their concerns to the administration. But its response, in a list of answers to questions about “the U.S.N.A. noon meal prayer,” contends that exposure to religious customs is important to the development of midshipmen and that those against the prayer should compromise.

The Navy’s arguments, however, were rejected by appellate court decisions in earlier lawsuits, Mr. Tuttle said.

Religious liberty advocates like Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation said fear silenced those troubled by religiosity at the academies.

“There is this massive sense of two things: that you are not wanted and you are made to feel like last-class citizens,” said Mr. Weinstein, a former Air Force officer. He added that he had been contacted by 31 cadets and staff members from West Point, including those who raised concerns about General Caslen, and 56 people from the Naval Academy, including 39 midshipmen. Almost all are afraid to go public.

At West Point, nearly all of those who raised concerns about religion at the academy in interviews were raised as Christians, though some are now agnostic or atheist.

They said the primacy of faith was apparent at West Point. This year, all cadets received a book about moral development based on the cadet prayer. At his commencement speech this year at West Point, Secretary of the Army Pete Geren started and ended with a quote from the Bible when God speaks to Isaiah, and he cast the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as a clash between American and radical Islamic approaches to religious liberty.

General Caslen served as commandant of cadets from mid-2006 to last month. Cadets praised him as a military commander, but they said religiosity at West Point increased under him.

In a speech last August that all cadets had to attend, General Caslen told cadets they were all God’s children and that was why he respected them.

“It wasn’t the first time,” said Mr. Warner, who was raised Pentecostal but is now atheist. “He always brings it up when he talks about leadership or moral values.”

In an interview, General Caslen said he had a “hard time” understanding how describing the dignity of others in terms of their being God’s children would be offensive, but nonetheless he apologized.

He said he was careful not to use his position to impose his religious views on others. But he said that while one need not be religious to be a good officer, a West Point field manual on leadership talks of the spiritual formation of cadets.

“That is the leadership development model for West Point and that recognizes there is a supreme being,” he said. “The values of one’s faith play an important role in moral development, and they undergird the development of ideas like duty, honor, country.”

The West Point cadets and Navy midshipmen said they wanted the practices to end, and their hope is that the military will make changes on its own.

“I have more faith in the Army than most people do,” said Mr. Warner, 27, who served as an enlisted man before enrolling at West Point. “It can police itself if it chooses to.”
