excited to share the film that resulted from this quick backyard photo session. i love the process, the imperfection and the surprise of the results in the end. film always gives me a warm feeling; reminds me of the nostalgia i get when i look at photographs from my own childhood. i still feel like film has an important place in my work and look forward to using this medium more and more. also, considering adding film to my portrait sessions. i think it can give my clients a “whole” experience by blending the newness of digital and the retro feelings of film. i don’t know about you, but i still <3 film!

There’s this special time I have most days with my oldest daughter, where after school it’s just the two of us. I really value this window of time, and I try to get her away from her homework or cell phone or whatever else may be calling her name, and we just get to hang. On this day it had been raining (again) and suddenly the sun came out and I was dying to photograph her with my film camera. So I begged a little (and then a little more) and she said, OK, FINE! So we tossed the blanket over her and I shot a handful of pics, thanked her profusely and we went inside. Then I realized I had no film in my camera, NOOOOO! The pics i had just taken, in my mind, were PERFECTION. So I begged again and to my surprise, she was not as reluctant as she was the first time (yay, maybe she’s warming up to my camera again?!). This time, instead of a handful, I took the whole roll. I couldn’t help myself. And I’m dying to get them back. That’s the fun of film- it’s a gift when you take the photos, and then again when you finally get to open them up after they’ve been developed. But, of course, this mom photog wasn’t satisfied with just that. I had her wait for me to go inside to get my digital camera too. I mean, really, how many times will this girl get in front of my camera! I was smitten and couldn’t help myself. Here are the digital images; loving Fall in Virginia, loving extra time with my baby girl.
and just for fun, had to share this outtake… the sunflare looks a little other-worldly to me, what do you think?!

oh how i love creative projects. oh how i love photographing interesting, beautiful souls. Dana is such a free spirit, and a dream to create with. she is an amazing underwater photographer in her own right, a free diver, a mermaid, a seamstress who spent hundreds of hours creating the piece of art you see here. genuine and kind in her manner, with an unyielding strength and incredible depth that pour out from those beautiful piercing eyes. ok. so i was feeling optimistic and then i got to thinking. that’s not the whole story. the whole story is better than just part of the story. so… it hasn’t been all roses (or pumpkin and cinnamon spice). it’s been HARD. which i expected. but it’s been extra hard to see my girls, one day adapt, the next day cry because they miss their friends, their house, their everything that was familiar. they are making friends, but it’s not the same. it won’t be for awhile, and i know this. i know that it will get better, easier with time, but i know that in the meantime it’s lonely. and while i spend my time worrying about what my plans would/should be, how can i organize my home, how can i do xy and z, well i feel kinda guilty. i don’t know why really. when I listen to my youngest dream over and over throughout the day of her farm that she will have someday, how she doesn’t yet feel comfortable in our new home, i guess that’s where the guilt can seep in. and my oldest, she had the world at her fingertips. and now she has to rebuild that whole world all again. i know she can do it, i know she will. i know that my youngest will dream big and my oldest will act bold, and through it all, they will inspire ME. maybe that’s why i feel guilty. maybe i can just throw out the guilt and be satisfied with where we are and how far we’ve come. i know that only through God’s grace have we made it through all of the changes, in a way that has made me proud. I hope that we can continue to lift each other up and enjoy this time of unknowns and find our way together through this new journey. i think we are doing a pretty amazing job. so i’m not going to beat myself up anymore about the unpacked boxes, the pictures not hung, the deadlines i haven’t met. i know God has us on a path together and it’s a messy one, but full of love and hope and if I will allow it, a lot of joy along the way. thanks for listening to the rest of the story…

getting settled

here i am. in my new home. in Northern Virginia, outside of Washington D.C..
after a long summer of travel, house hunting, moving and adjusting, i am finally ready to get my feet wet.
first of all, i love it here. i almost feel guilty saying that. because i love Hawaii so, so how could i possible love another?
well, i do. i do and here is what i am loving…
the early taste of Fall weather that i have been craving for too many years
the trees that surround me and give me what fills like magic oxygen that fills my lungs
the tree swing in our backyard that i want to photograph every single day
the fireplace that is waiting ever so patiently to welcome us
the schools that are top notch and i don’t even have to pay for them
the feeling that i live in the country and yet am so close to one of many crazy-amazing cities
the Chipotle that is way too close to my house
the things i thought i would hate that i am actually embracing
fashion. we are becoming reacquainted. on the East coast, it’s impossible to ignore!
watching the game, the news, the show, the everything- LIVE
roadtrips. in the last few months i have taken many, and yet i have an entire map-full yet to explore
i thought about divulging the things i don’t like (like the earthquake, the hurricane, the floods) but then i thought, nah
i am also really feeling the writing bug. so in addition to sharing pics of a lot of amazing projects and client sessions, I will be letting loose on the keyboard…

moving, but not able to move

we’re moving. from hawaii to the d.c. area. and any other time in my life, this would have been no. big. deal. but this time, it is. it feels so heavy. i can’t put into words the love i have for hawaii. having the opportunity to live here for the past 2 years has been such a blessing, one that has not been lost on me. i always look ahead. and will move forward. but as our moving date fast approaches in a few short weeks, i can’t help but feel like i’m stuck like glue to this place. i can see ahead and i know i will leap and find my way… but for today i am living in that limbo…
