the last pictures of Fall. just uploaded these, can’t believe they were taken a month ago. and now, one front tooth is missing, those cold rosy cheeks are looking forward to sun kisses, the long sleeves have been replaced with shorts, and the brown of the yard is now a bright shade of green. all in a month. so magnificent, so miraculous. getting ready and looking forward to a trip back to our beloved Hawaii and venturing out with the cherry blossoms here in our new home. embracing all of the growth and rebirth the change in seasons has to offer. Goodbye Winter~ hello Spring photo sessions, Hawaii beaches, cherry blossoms in D.C. and an abundance of warmth and blessings!

Em, the joy you have brought our family is immeasurable. what i wouldn’t give for you to hold that in your heart forever. your dream to be a farmer, to be an artist… your dreams and your questions of our dreams sustain us, and you always keep us on our toes. thank you for being such a blessing, to all who know you. you recently had to write for school if you could be a gift, what would it be? it was Christmastime and of course most kids would think of something tangible, like a toy they were hoping for from their Christmas list. but not you, you had bigger things in mind. you said, “if i could be a gift… i would be a gift of love and peace”, and that is so so you. i wonder, do you know that you already are a gift of peace and love? that, and a lot of laughs are what you bring in abundance to our family.

Time is running out to get those special Fall photos! The leaves are falling fast, way faster than I expected! excited to share the film that resulted from this quick backyard photo session. i love the process, the imperfection and the surprise of the results in the end. film always gives me a warm feeling; reminds me of the nostalgia i get when i look at photographs from my own childhood. i still feel like film has an important place in my work and look forward to using this medium more and more. also, considering adding film to my portrait sessions. i think it can give my clients a “whole” experience by blending the newness of digital and the retro feelings of film. i don’t know about you, but i still <3 film!

Northern Virginia backyard Fall photo session

There’s this special time I have most days with my oldest daughter, where after school it’s just the two of us. I really value this window of time, and I try to get her away from her homework or cell phone or whatever else may be calling her name, and we just get to hang. On this day it had been raining (again) and suddenly the sun came out and I was dying to photograph her with my film camera. So I begged a little (and then a little more) and she said, OK, FINE! So we tossed the blanket over her and I shot a handful of pics, thanked her profusely and we went inside. Then I realized I had no film in my camera, NOOOOO! The pics i had just taken, in my mind, were PERFECTION. So I begged again and to my surprise, she was not as reluctant as she was the first time (yay, maybe she’s warming up to my camera again?!). This time, instead of a handful, I took the whole roll. I couldn’t help myself. And I’m dying to get them back. That’s the fun of film- it’s a gift when you take the photos, and then again when you finally get to open them up after they’ve been developed. But, of course, this mom photog wasn’t satisfied with just that. I had her wait for me to go inside to get my digital camera too. I mean, really, how many times will this girl get in front of my camera! I was smitten and couldn’t help myself. Here are the digital images; loving Fall in Virginia, loving extra time with my baby girl.
and just for fun, had to share this outtake… the sunflare looks a little other-worldly to me, what do you think?!

oh how i love creative projects. oh how i love photographing interesting, beautiful souls. Dana is such a free spirit, and a dream to create with. she is an amazing underwater photographer in her own right, a free diver, a mermaid, a seamstress who spent hundreds of hours creating the piece of art you see here. genuine and kind in her manner, with an unyielding strength and incredible depth that pour out from those beautiful piercing eyes.
