For Alfa Romeo's MiTo GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerito) concept, Alfa engineers were charged with shedding as many pounds as they could from the already lightweight economy car (for those not in the know, 'alleggerito' means reduced weight in Italiano). As such, carbon fiber makes up the tailgate spoiler, roof and exterior mirror housings. Numerous suspension components, brakes and chassis parts were replaced by aluminum units in an effort to further lighten the car.
Fiat Powertrain Technologies was tapped for the all-new 1.8L turbo engine making around 240-hp featuring direct-injection, dual variable valve timing and an advanced ECU system to keep everything running in one piece. A "Skyhook"-like adaptive suspension similar to systems employed on Ferraris and Maseratis has also been installed to better lay down the power more efficiently. The GTA sits 20-mm lower than a stock MiTo and stiffens appropriately under hard cornering and braking maneuvers.

Although uncertain of its long term future, Volvo is still cranking out vehicle refreshes and introducing new products as much as it can. Case in point, the revised 2010 Volvo S80 sedan -- the brand's flagship four-door -- which is scheduled for a U.S. release during the second half of the year.
Under the direction of design head Steve Martin, designers brought out a menacing "boser blick" front end said to add more character while catching the eyes of passersby. Its grille, featuring a re-worked version of Volvo's larger, trademark iron mask, adds to the more aggressive persona. Revised intakes up front, as well as new rear lights conclude the exterior touchups.
To compete with the stiff luxury segment competition, supple leather with matching stitching lines the seats, dash and doors. The sedan's super slim floating dash is similar to the new XC60 and is slightly angled towards the driver for more accessibility.
In being simply a refresh, the S80 gets the same engine options as current derivatives. Base and middle trim levels are powered by the 3.2L inline-six and turbocharged 3.0L inline-six, respectively, while higher editions get the brand's 311-hp 4.4L V-8.

Saab's new 9-3X wagon is a vehicle similar to the Audi Allroad that, in Saab's words, will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts looking for an alternative to large SUVs.
To accomplish this task, Saab designers lifted the chassis of the standards 9-3 SpotCombi by 1.4-in and added the company's "XWD" all-wheel-drive system. With multiple wet clutch plates and an optional rear limited slip differential, the system can dole out torque between the front and rear axles as it sees fit.
Engine options consist of a turbo 1.9-liter diesel and a turbo 2.0-liter E85-capable gasoline engine. The diesel musters 180 hp. Opt for it, however, and you're stuck with front-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive-attached gasoline engine produces 210 hp, and both engines offer six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
To further differentiate from the standard SportCombi, the 9-3X employs new front and rear pumpers, painted a dark gray which stretches to the side sills and wheel arches. Out back, two exhaust pipes poke from the bumper for both engine options.

Rather than starting with a concept, Mercedes is blasting straight into the market with the production E-Class coupe which is set make its debut alongside the redesigned E-Class sedan. After its North American debut at the New York auto show in April, it will go on sale in the U.S. in June of this year.
Not a great deal of technical information on the new E-Class coupe or sedan has been made public yet, but one number Benz is making a big deal of when it comes to the coupe is 0.24, its coefficient of drag number that Stuttgart says makes it the most aerodynamically efficient series production vehicle in the world. There are significant styling differences inside and out between the two cars. This is most likely due to the fact that the coupe is not only a variation on the E-Class, but a replacement for the CLK-Class, which is being discontinued.
Starting in the front, the E-Class coupe will stand out with its own grille, featuring fewer, beefier horizontal bars. Gone is the tri-star Mercedes-Benz hood ornament, replaced with a massive tri-star logo in the center of the grille. Down below, the radiator opening in the lower fascia has been slightly revised and is narrower and helps the front end look a bit more aggressive.

Behind the 2010 Mazdaspeed3's smiling face is Mazda's familiar 2.3L turbocharged and direct-injected engine. Power is still sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, albeit one with ratios that have been revised for smoother acceleration. Power in the European-spec car, known as the Mazda3 MPS, is unchanged, remaining at 256 hp and 280 lb-ft, good for 0 to 62 mph sprints of 6.1 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. It also wears the same 12.6-in front and 11.0-in rear brakes , though Mazda has added electronic Brake Assist to the ABS and stability control systems.
What's new then? Well, it now meets the strict Euro-V emissions standards thanks to the world's first single-nanotechnology catalytic converter. It's also more efficient, returning 26 mpg combined on the Euro-cycle, an improvement of nearly two mpg over the old car despite a 0.01 increase in the drag coefficient from 0.31 to 0.32. Mazda has also beefed up the frame around the front cowl and rear suspension to stiffen the car up and improve the handling. They even took it out to the Nurburgring to sort out the suspension and make it more stable in turns and especially over broken or wavy pavement. Wider tires on new 18-in wheels no doubt help the cornering performance as well.
The biggest changes, though, are skin-deep. The new Mazdaspeed3's Nagare-style grinning grille remains largely the same up front, but features reworked air intakes that feed passing air to the brakes more efficiently. Also of note on the front clip is the deletion of lower ducts set below the fog lights. More aggressive side skirts continue the Mazdaspeed theme along the flanks and to the rear, the enhancements culminate with a blacked-out rear diffuser sporting a dual exhaust. A more pronounced wing also perches above the five-door's hatchback. Bolder fenders house the larger wheel and tire setup, while the bulging hood features a gaping scoop to feed the intercooler.
The Euro-spec and U.S.-spec Mazdaspeed3 aren't identical, but the Mazda3 MPS should give us a pretty good idea of what to expect from the U.S. model. Though the U.S. car is more powerful than the Euro model, turning out 263 hp and 280 lb-ft, it looks as though we may not see a power increase either. Mazda has also put to bed rumors of an AWD Mazdaspeed3, telling Motor Trend that the AWD system that would fit the car takes up too much space and wouldn't stand up to the power of the Mazdaspeed3's engine. We'll find out all the exact specs on the U.S. model when it debuts at the New York Auto Show in April 2009.

Fresh off the heels of the Cooper Convertible's debut in Detroit, Mini will debut the racing-derived John Cooper Works variant of the drop-top. It's more powerful, faster and of course, more expensive than the comparatively run-of-the-mill Mini Cooper S Convertible due out next month.
Like the two other models from JCW -- the Cooper JCW and Clubman JCW -- the convertible receives all the uprated components derived from Cooper's racing tenure. Stiffer springs and dampers, bigger yet lighter 17-in alloys, stickier rubber, bigger brakes and let's not forget, a more powerful turbocharged powertrain, are all included in the range-topping edition.
Under the hood, engineers optimized the supply and extraction of air from the intake and exhaust system to improve power to the direct-injected 1.6L four-cylinder. A more robust twin-scroll turbocharger running at 1.3 bar of boost was bolted on and is good for a maximum 208 hp at 6000 rpm and 207 lb-ft at 2000-5300 rpm (with overboost). Mini claims the JCW-prepped convertible can hit 60 mph in 6.6 sec and a top speed of 146 mph, all the while achieving an EPA rated 26 mpg city/ 34 mpg highway. In true JCW fashion, only a six-speed manual transmission will be available.
Inside, all the quirky Mini-esque tidbits such including its aviator-style window switches and huge instrument displays make their way into the JCW drop-top. Appropriate badging inside and out clearly indicates this little Mini is not the garden variety Cooper 'Vert.
U.S. deliveries are slated for this April at a price of $34,950 (including destination and handling), or around $7500 more than the 2009 Cooper S Convertible.

If you thought the Toyota IQ was reaching the lower limit of four-passenger vehicle size, think again. Toyota is taking packaging to another level with the FT-EV II Concept, an electric city car even smaller than the IQ.
How does Toyota do it? It’s a matter of reducing the size of two major components of a vehicle, the drivetrain and the controls. While small engines, and indeed electric motors, are not a new idea, the compact nature of the electric motor allows Toyota to do away with the traditional hood and engine bay to shorten the car’s overall length and offer much greater forward visibility. In fact, visibility is even enhanced with an auxiliary window below the windshield, see-through LED tail lights and video cameras instead of side mirrors. Entry and egress is made easy by power sliding doors.

While the electric drivetrain reduced exterior dimensions, the real trick was freeing up interior space. To do it, Toyota made all of the major controls drive-by-wire. From brakes and accelerator to even the steering, there is no mechanical connection between the driver and the vehicle. Doing so allowed Toyota to free up a good deal of interior space around the driver and incorporated a retro-futuristic joystick-style control rather than a traditional steering wheel. More than that, it eliminated the traditional dashboard all together -- freeing up even more room for passengers.
The FT-EV II is powered by a compact electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack that Toyota says is good for a range of roughly 55 miles and can propel the car to a top speed of about 62 mph. Toyota says making the FT-EV II exceptionally quiet took a good deal of fine-tuning of the motor control technology.
While the FT-EV II is certainly an interesting display of technology, we don’t expect to see it in the U.S. It’s far more likely that if it makes it to production, it will compete in Japan’s fierce Kei Car market for ultra-small cars.

Packed with enough emotional content to satisfy fans of the departed Supra, MR-2 and Celica, the Toyota FT-86 Concept is set to make its world debut at the company's 2009 Tokyo auto show stand on October 21. It's got eye-catching looks, a 2+2 layout, rear-wheel-drive, a horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual transmission. And a production version is due by late 2011.

This unlikely coupe, borne out of the on-again, off-again, on-again relationship between Toyota and Subaru, nearly got axed twice. In April 2008, former Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe first announced the joint development project with Subaru in which both companies would build a sports car based on the same platform. Since that date, the economic downturn led to two cooling off periods in which the destiny of the project hung in the balance. But enough momentum remained to push it into the 'can do' basket, and the fact that the Toyota-Subaru design team already had a significant springboard in the form of a Subaru platform and engine helped build the case to keep it alive.
Drawing definite design hints from the FT-HS hybrid sports concept seen at the 2007 Detroit show, the sharp, edgy exterior injects more than a little emotion into the Toyota product mix, something the company's lineup has been crying out for since the MR-S (MR-2) coupe disappeared two years ago.
A source close to Toyota tells us that while the FT-86's exterior design is sourced from Toyota Europe Design in France, two other prototypes also exist, one penned by head office in Toyota City and the other created by Calty Design Research in California. "Build quality is very high, and it may already look ready for the road, but don't be surprised if the exterior changes, because this car is not finished, not by a long way," our source says.

The name FT-86, which won't be the car's final name, harks back to the immensely popular Corolla AE-86 rear-drive coupe of the 80s, a car in which the famous Drift King -- Japanese racing legend Keiichi Tsuchiya -- started his career, while FT stands for 'Future Toyota.' And you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the FT-86's potential to ignite a whole new generation of drifters.

In a speech to media in Tokyo on October 1, new Toyota CEO and Nurburgring 24-hour race driver Akio Toyoda enthusiastically explained that the company plans to put greater effort from now on into building 'more emotional cars' and that the FT-86, and Lexus LFA on a more extreme scale, are just the first in a long line. In justifying his racing efforts at the world's most grueling race track, Toyoda said "It is important for management like me to drive our cars not only on public roads, but also in competition to fully understand where our engineers are coming from." He went on to say that he is not racing for the sake of racing, but rather testing cars like the LFA and IS F on road surfaces in competitive environments that push a car's chassis and suspension to the limits.
While specifications for this concept coupe are still sketchy, our source says that the FT-86 employs a shortened version of the Subaru Legacy platform and will be powered by a 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine from the Impreza lineup but with a reworked Toyota head that should generate around 200 hp. It will also incorporate a six-speed Aisin-built manual gearbox. The FT-86 is also expected to inherit the front MacPherson strut, and rear double wishbone setup from the Legacy, but with strategic modifications to allow for the switch from 4WD to rear-wheel-drive. According to reports, the concept is roughly 164 in. long, 69 in. wide and 50 in. in height, with a 101-in. wheelbase.
What is strange however is the conspicuous absence of any reference from Subaru to their version of the car given that it sits on significant Subaru hardware. One industry commentator tells us that Subaru did not want to take any of the limelight away from Toyota's FT-86 unveiling, and will wait until a later date to reveal its prototype, perhaps at a show in Europe next year. If you want to check out some serious Toyota hardware on a Subaru, just look at the Hybrid Tourer concept with those gullwing doors. It's using a very familiar THSII hybrid system, a la Toyota.
LOW CARBON CONCEPTS
In the latest sign of a marginal recovery in car demand, Toyota might have raised its global sales forecast for the year by three percent to 6.7 million cars, but in Japan at least, the only cars selling on any scale are hybrids. Order a Prius today in Tokyo, and you won't pick it up until next spring. And the just-launched Lexus HS250h received over 10,000 orders last month, shocking company bosses and dealers who were expecting around 500 units a month to pass through Japan's showrooms.

This is a signal that the market wants more vehicles with a low carbon footprint, just the kind of cars Toyota will reveal at the Tokyo Motor Show starting on October 21 at the Makuhari Messe site just outside the city.
A first for Japan, but first seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month is the Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept (PHV). This car is based on the third-generation Prius but uses first-generation lithium-ion battery technology developed by Panasonic. Its 98-horsepower 1.8-liter gasoline engine, with 105 pound-feet of torque, is paired with an electric motor that makes 84 hp and 153 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in is intended to have a 13-mile cruising range and the ability to cruise at highway speeds on pure electrical power. The lithium-ion battery setup is targeted to recharge in three hours at 100 volts and 100 minutes on 200 volts. Toyota says the Prius Plug-In concept will emit less than 42 g/km of CO2 and boast mileage of 155 mpg, something the industry will want to check out when 500 test vehicles are rolled out around the world later this year.

Smaller than an iQ, but still seating four passengers (at a squeeze!), this pure electric car employs lithium-ion batteries and a full by-wire drive system that can reach a top speed of 62 mph and cover 55 miles on one charge.

Making their own foray into the world of electric vehicles, Suzuki is bringing two electrified versions of its Swift compact car to the Tokyo Motor Show, one a plug-in hybrid and the other a fuel-cell vehicle.
The more conventional Swift Plug-in Hybrid is really more of an extended-range electric vehicle and operates much like the Chevrolet Volt. Like the Chevy, an electric motor actually drives the wheels while a small gasoline engine acts only as a generator that produces electricity to either recharge the battery or power the electric motor. The battery can also be recharged by plugging it into a wall socket. Suzuki is targeting the car at in-city commuters who, according to the company’s research, travel less than 15 miles per day on average. By adding the gas-powered generator, though, the Swift Plug-in Hybrid isn’t limited by its battery size.
While Suzuki hasn’t released any information about the Swift Plug-in Hybrid’s range or fuel-economy, it’s expected to be impressive thanks in part to the car’s small size and weight. Suzuki hasn’t announced production plans either, but it’s likely the technology will see production in the future even if this exact car doesn’t.

The more advanced of the Swift concepts is the SX4-FCV, a fuel-cell vehicle. Using a GM-built fuel-cell and a 10,000-psi hydrogen tank to generate electricity, the SX4-FCV operates similarly to the Swift Plug-in Hybrid except that the fuel-cell generates electricity rather than a gasoline engine. The SX4-FCV is actually the latest generation of the vehicle and boasts improved handling and performance thanks to its more compact components and lighter weight. The previous-generation vehicle is already testing on Japanese roads and is destined for the open market in the near future according to Suzuki.

The Supasse V sports car -- designed and built by Japanese backyard builder Suzusho Ltd. -- is set for a Tokyo debut next week.
Tipping the scales at just 1874 lbs thanks to its liberal use of aluminum and fiberglass components, the Supasse V coupe sits on a unique race-car style 'aluminum twin-tube monocoque spaceframe' with a copper tube frame addition at the rear end. The race car like styling is no accident either. Veteran Japanese F1 car designer Kenji Mimura is responsible for the V's great-looking lines.
The Supasse V is powered by a midship-mounted, specially tuned version of the 2.3-liter turbo from the MazdaSpeed3, mated to the Speed3's six-speed gearbox.
Slated to go on sale in Japan in mid-2010, Nagoya-based car parts and used car dealer Suzusho says it will build 100 units over four years with a price tag somewhere in the $50,000-$80,000 range

TOKYO SHOW UPDATE: At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru president and CEO Ikuo Mori announced that the brand will launch its first hybrid vehicle in 2012. This all-new fuel-sipper will feature technology showcased in the Hybrid Tourer Concept, which boasts Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel drive, Lineartronic CVT, and a 2.0-liter direct-injected flat-4 combined with a lithium-ion battery. Subaru said its hybrid will be a version of an existing model, e.g. Forester Hybrid or Outback Hybrid, and not a standalone model a la the Toyota Prius. The HTC wears a bold hexagonal front grille that hints at the brand’s corporate face of tomorrow, and the overall design theme represents Subaru's idea of what an activity vehicle will look like in the future. Further, the HTC's use of LED front lighting will likely find its way into future products, and the 2.0-liter engine -- Subaru's first example of a turbocharged DI power plant -- will no doubt make its way under the hoods of upcoming Impreza and Legacy models.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: If there's one automaker that refuses to mess with success, it's Subaru. The quirky Japanese company has stuck to its boxer engines and standard AWD for decades and has carved out a nice niche for itself. As the realities of the 21st century sink in, though, even Subaru must adapt. The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept represents the first step.

Though it may appear like an over-stylized, Japanese market Legacy Wagon on the outside, it's what's underneath that counts -- Subaru's first hybrid drivetrain, which combines a pair of electric motors and a lithium-ion battery with the tried-and-true Symmetrical AWD and boxer engine. The pair of electric motors -- one mounted at each axle -- can propel the car at low speeds or assist in acceleration as well as act as generators to recapture braking energy.
Primary power will come from a 2.0L horizontally-opposed, turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine. Likely a variant of the EJ20, it is the automaker's first direct-injected engine and is said to offer improved fuel efficiency and performance and lower emissions compared with its port-injected counterparts. It is also the first application of Subaru's start/stop technology, which shuts down the engine when the vehicle is stationary. The engine sends power to all four wheels via Subaru's new Lineartronic CVT.

The 20 kW (27 hp) rear electric motor will propel the car at low speeds, and assist in acceleration and hill climbing. The 10 kW (14 hp) front electric motor acts as a generator to recapture brake energy and recharge the lithium-ion battery but will also provide additional propulsion for climbing hills. The Hybrid Tourer Concept's total output isn't known as Subaru has not yet released power numbers for the gasoline engine.
In addition to the hybrid drivetrain, the Hybrid Tourer Concept will also showcase Subaru's Eyesight + (plus) technology, which uses stereo video cameras to track potential obstacles in the car's path and assist in collision avoidance. Able to recognize everything from pedestrians to cyclists to other vehicles, the system constantly monitors their positions and paths and also monitors the car's blind spots. It can also act as a lane departure warning system and as active cruise control.
The Hybrid Tourer's interior features plenty of concept car showbiz. For example, the top of the dashboard can be moved up or down "to provide an optimal driving environment for the driver depending on driving conditions," whatever that means. Other tricks include special windshield glass that will reduce driver eye strain, new leather that's more breathable, ventilated seats and a flat rear floor despite the AWD drivetrain, although as it has only four seats, Subaru seems to have gone to lot of effort for minimal benefit.
On the outside, the Hybrid Tourer Concept looks more or less like a brand new Japanese-market Legacy Wagon that's been remolded into a sportier shape. A faster D-pillar and stylized tail lights recall the sharp rake and lenses of the new Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, but look far more aggressive than the rear of the Legacy Wagon. In front, Subaru's new design language has been exaggerated, with deep vents around the fog lights, a gaping grille, a more pronounced hood bulge and sharper headlights. Subaru has ditched the traditional four doors in favor of massive and highly impractical gullwing doors that do away with the B- and C-pillars and allow easy access to all four seats.

You can forget the show-floor eyewash -- the real story is Hybrid Tourer Concept's powertrain, which is almost certainly destined for production Subarus in the near future. The Eyesight + technology is also likely for production, though don't expect it in U.S. market Subarus. We'll find out more when the Hybrid Tourer Concept makes its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 21 and 22

More than one attempt has been made in the past to combine the features of an automobile and a motorcycle into one vehicle and now Nissan has thrown their hat into the ring as well with the Land Glider electric vehicle concept.
Inside and out, the Land Glider looks quite similar to Volkswagen’s L1 Concept, but instead of ultimate fuel economy, Nissan was looking for more sporty driving from an electric vehicle. Thanks to a steer-by-wire system and small motors mounted at each wheel, the wheels along with the rest of the vehicle can tilt up to 17 degrees to lean into a corner for sharper handling. Speed, steering angle and yaw sensors work together to determine the appropriate amount of lean for the conditions and the entire system allows Nissan to minimize the width of both the vehicle itself and its tires for maximum efficiency from its battery pack.
Power for the Land Glider “personal city commuter” comes from a lithium-polymer battery pack mounted beneath the floor, which supplies juice for two electric motors mounted in the rear wheels. Together, they can sling the Land Glider down the road at up to 40 mph and take it up to 60 miles on a charge.

With such small crumple zones, Nissan engineers designed high-tech solutions to keep the Land Glider out of bad situations. A network of sensors on the vehicle monitor other vehicles nearby and keeps the Land Glider from running into them much the same way bees and schools of fish are able to travel in close proximity without bumping into one another.
Like the L1 Concept, passengers in the Land Glider sit tandem with the driver lower and in front. Drive-by-wire controls and video screens in place of mirrors keep the vehicle as narrow as possible to allow two people to zip around city streets and park without taking up much space, both of which are expected to help ease congestion in large cities. While just a concept at this point, the Land Glider’s accident-avoidance and electric-drive technologies are likely to find their way into future Nissan products.

While series hybrids, which use an electric motor to boost the output of a gasoline engine, are the most common form of hybrid vehicle at the moment, Mitsubishi is skipping ahead to what appears to be the next step: parallel hybrids.
In Mitsubishi’s PX-MiEV concept, a 114-hp 1.6L four-cylinder engine with 92 lb-ft of torque is augmented by two electric motors which do most of the work. In most cases, the electric motor mounted on the front axle drives the front wheels, but when more power is needed, the gasoline engine kicks on to help. Under heavy loads, heavy acceleration or emergency maneuvers, another electric motor at the rear axle also kicks in to provide power and help stabilize the vehicle. When the gasoline engine isn’t needed, it either switches off or acts as a generator to recharge the battery or power the electric motors, whichever is most efficient at the moment. Each electric motor generates 60 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque and all together, Mitsubishi says the PX-MiEV can achieve 118 mpg.
In addition to determining the most efficient way to propel the PX-MiEV in any given circumstance, the computer can also use the electric motors to dole out torque both front-to-rear and side-to-side for maximum stability and traction. Cameras mounted around the vehicle, meanwhile, give the driver a birds-eye view for navigating in tight spaces.

Inside, the PX-MiEV features a futuristic design replete with touchscreen panels for all non-driving related controls. The minimalist interior comes with a horseshoe-shaped steering wheel stuffed with buttons to activate as many vehicle systems (like navigation and stereo) without the driver taking his or her hands off of the wheel. Touchscreens in front and rear take up as little passenger space as possible while the heated and cooled seats feature a material that traps and destroys odors and allergens. Reflective paint and window coatings keep interior temperatures down to reduce energy usage.
The PX-MiEV can be charged from either a standard 110-volt wall socket, a 200-volt socket or a special high-voltage quick-charger, though Mitsubishi hasn’t specified charging times. The vehicle can also act as a giant battery and power a household appliance to cut home energy costs or act as a generator to provide electricity during an outage.

Lotus Launch Control and Lotus Traction Control – additions recommended for track driving Lotus Launch Control and Lotus Traction Control were originally developed for the Lotus Exige GT3 racing programme.
The launch control allows the driver to determine the number of revs they wish to use during a standing start. Having programmed that limit, the driver then holds the throttle pedal down fully and sidesteps the clutch pedal for a very quick departure from the line. The clutch damper cushions the severity of the clutch to transmission engagement to minimise the stresses to the drivetrain. The launch control allows wheel-spin until 10 km/h (6 mph) to further reduce drivetrain stress, after which the traction control assumes its duties at the defined level set by the driver.
As with launch control, the amount of traction control required can be dialled in from the driver’s seat and altered on the move to suit the characteristics of particular corners. The amount of traction control can be varied in over 30 increments from an optimum 7 percent tyre slip to completely inactive. The message display in the new instrument pack displays what degree of traction control is being currently utilised.
Suspension To suit individual driving styles and road conditions, drivers will now be able to tune the Exige suspension with the Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers (which have 60 compression and 22 rebound settings) and ride height adjustment to reduce the ride height from 130 mm to 120 mm.
Performance, Economy and Emissions The Lotus Exige Stealth is capable of incredible track performance which and at the heart of its success is the aerodynamic package, which produces 42 kg of downforce at 160 km/h (100 mph) increasing grip and stability at higher speeds. This downforce, coupled with a top speed of around 245 km/h (152 mph) and a zero to 160 km/h (100 mph) in circa 9.9 seconds, 0 to 100 km/h in circa 4.1 seconds (0 to 60 mph in around 4 seconds), means that the Exige Stealth is not only stunning to look at but a phenomenal performer too. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 8.5 l/100km and the CO2 emissions 199 g/km.
Engine The supercharged and intercooled engine in the Exige Stealth has a maximum power output of 260 PS (257 hp) at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of 236 Nm (174 lbft) at 6000 rpm. This significant amount of extra power and torque over the production level Exige S together with the VVTL-i variable cam system ensures that there is a smooth and linear delivery of power from low engine speeds all the way to the maximum 8000 rpm (8500 rpm transient for 2 seconds). The supercharger (with a sealed-for-life internal mechanism meaning that it does not require the use of the engine’s oil) is run from the crankshaft and has an integral bypass valve for part load operation. Charge air (air under pressure from the supercharger) is cooled through an air-to-air intercooler (the air enters via the enhanced roof scoop) before being fed into the engine itself. All charge air ducting has been kept as short as possible with large diameter pipes to minimise restriction and maximise throttle response and efficiency. Four high capacity injectors and an uprated fuel pump add additional fuel under hard acceleration or continuous high speed driving – only on the track, of course!
A lightweight flywheel is fitted (giving even greater flexibility and response to the gear change), a sports-type clutch plate and heavy duty clutch cover transfer the engine power and torque to the lightweight C64 six-speed gearbox (with an aluminium casing) – with the same perfectly spaced ratios as the Exige S. An Accusump (engine oil accumulator unit) is included in the whole package as an oil reservoir back-up for extreme track use ensuring that, under those conditions, the engine oil pressure remains constant.

Lost in the excitement surrounding the production prototype debut of the hotly anticipated Honda CR-Z is the Honda Skydeck concept. With the proliferation of hybrid drivetrains these days, it was only matter of time before hybrid minivans began popping up and with Chrysler’s EREV program off the radar, Honda is stepping up.
The Skydeck concept comes across as something of a cross between the hot new CR-Z and the Honda Odyssey, offering sporty styling and an extremely raked windshield on a six-passenger minivan. Far from the first minivan with a laid-back windshield, the real story is under the hood where Honda has fitted a hybrid drivetrain, likely a variant of its proven Integrated Motor Assist mild hybrid system. Honda has said very little about the vehicle, so it’s not yet known what kind of fuel economy improvements the Skydeck will offer.
Along with the hybrid drivetrain, the Skydeck offers a few other tricks. Up front, Honda has fitted scissor doors for soccer dads wishing they had a Lamborghini while the back offers traditional sliding doors on either side. Inside, the third-row seats slide forward and underneath the second-row seats to offer more rear cargo space.

If the current crop of electric vehicles just look too futuristic to you, Honda has a cure for what ails you. It’s the retro-styled EV-N electric vehicle concept that looks something like an updated Trabant.
Not much is known about the tiny EV-N, but it’s expected to be a battery-powered city vehicle with a limited range and top speed due to the lack of space for a large battery pack. Cool features including some kind of lighted “communications system” embedded in the front fascia, swappable seat fabrics, solar panels in the roof and a UX-3 self-balancing electric unicycle strapped into the driver’s door for extra-vehicular excursions.
The EV-N is part of Honda’s HELLO! Zone which will feature electric vehicles and solutions for generating green electricity, as Honda rightly points out that switching to zero-emissions vehicles won’t matter much if polluting power plants have to work overtime to charge them. Given its tiny stature and lack of stats, it’s not likely the EV-N will see the road any time soon and if it does, it will likely stay in Japan in the Kei Car segment.

TOKYO SHOW UPDATE: Expect a production trim version of the CR-Z to appear at the 2010 Detroit auto show, with U.S. sales on track for a late 2010 launch.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Combining a potent cocktail of styling hints from the Insight, Odyssey and Civic Type R, the production-ready Honda CR-Z 2009 concept's stunning lines will take center stage at Honda's stand when the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show opens on October 21.
Slated for a February 2010 launch in Japan and later that year in the U.S., the world's first dedicated sports hybrid coupe employs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired to an updated version of Honda's now well-known IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) system. Upgraded from the Insight's 41 mpg 1.3 liter unit, one source close to Honda tells that we can expect somewhere around 32-35 U.S. mpg from the new coupe. Helping the front-wheel-drive CR-Z to achieve that kind of mileage will be the hybrid world's first six-speed manual gearbox, which Honda engineers have fitted to generate the best mileage possible while at the same time injecting more fun into the driving experience of hybrids. And anything that spruces up the thrill factor of piloting a hybrid is welcome news to us.
In fact, with its combination of meaty bottom end torque from the larger 1.5-liter engine and its revised IMA system, all channeled through that six-speed floor-shifter, you can expect some relatively quick getaways from the CR-Z.
To further lower its carbon footprint, Honda is also unveiling the stylish hybrid CR-Z concept and the six-seater Skydeck hybrid minivan, which boasts front scissor-action style doors and third row seats which slide forward and under the second row seats to allow rear access. And just to show that Honda has not forgotten its sporty roots, the company will reveal its latest hot hatch for the Japenese market, the Civic Type R Euro. Yep, you guessed it, it's designed in Europe. Specifications are sketchy at present, but if the current UK-spec model is any guide, expect the Type R Euro to output around 200 hp from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to a six-speed manual gearbox.

If you're not ready for a hybrid-powered fun-to-drive Honda like the CR-Z Concept, the unmistakable Civic Type-R Euro might be more your style. After Australia and South Africa, Japan will be the third country outside Europe to sell the car: Sales begin in 2010.
This is a uniquely styled hatchback with triangular exhaust outlets, white seven-spoke wheels, and a 2.0L four-cylinder engine like the U.S.-market Civic Si. Compared to the Civic Si coupe, however, the Civic Type-R Euro is about 100 pounds lighter and seven inches shorter. The car will do the 0-62 mph sprint in 6.6 sec, Honda says.
Inside, red stitching, special sport seats, and the red Honda badge on the steering wheel signify this is no ordinary Civic. The Type-R Euro sports rear view mirrors with turn signal indicators like the Civic Hybrid and a gas door finished in silver, though we're not sure that's a good thing. No matter, this hot hatch is about high-revving fun and, though the U.S. will never see a Type-R Euro, we have a feeling Honda won't have trouble finding enough Japanese enthusiasts to snap up these units.

The two-door e:S is a preview of future Daihatsus, or at least the technology that will be in future models. The diminutive car weighs just 700 kgs (1543 lbs) and rides on a short 85.6-in. wheelbase with power coming from a 58-hp 660 cc gasoline three-cylinder outfitted with a stop-start system that achieves an impressive 70.5 mpg using the Japanese test cycle, 10% better than the current engine.
In the future, this three-cylinder will make way for a 63-hp direct-injected turbo twin that will improve fuel economy by a further 30%. And, if Daihatsu's plans come to fruition, this engine will be replaced by a precious-metal-free liquid-feed fuel-cell powertrain, which is said to be cheaper and safer than other fuel-cell technologies

Caterham CSR175 Concept

Caterham was one of just three non-Japanese automakers to show up to the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show. The British purveyor of superlight roadsters used the opportunity to unveil the latest variant of its Cosworth-powered CSR, the 175-horsepower CSR175. In addition to not being a Japanese offering, the CSR175 stands out as one of the few non-green car debuts at Tokyo.
The CSR175 slides in at the bottom of the CSR lineup under the CSR200 and CSR260 and is part of Caterham's efforts to expand its presence in Japan. The automaker named an exclusive importer in Japan earlier this year and now has over 15 dealers in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Its not known if this latest version of the CSR will be offered in the U.S. If it is, it will be sold without an engine as a kit car like every other Caterham due to America's stricter safety regulations.

Even in our gilded age of $5 coffee libations and $10,000 plasma TVs, the price shocks like a hornet sting: a Toyota that costs... nearly $400,000.
True, the limited-edition, two-seat, rear-drive LFA supercar, due to appear here in early 2011, will hide its Toyota roots behind the velvet rope of its maker's Lexus brand, but the sticker is staggering nonetheless. The most expensive model in the current Lexus portfolio, the LS 600h hybrid luxury sedan, starts at $106,910.
"The LFA is a halo car for the F marque," says national manager for Lexus Advanced Business Development Paul Rohovsky, referring to the Lexus F performance division (think "AMG Mercedes") behind the IS F sport sedan. Indeed, Rohovsky is candid: "The LFA will raise passion for the brand, an admitted Lexus shortcoming," he says.
How do you inject "passion" into a lineup encompassing supremely competent but generally narcotic offerings like the RX 350 sport/ute and even the vaunted LS 460 premium sedan? To Toyota's way of thinking, you do a cannonball right into the pool currently occupied by the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Porsche.

Mind you, Toyota isn't diving in naked. "I have spent one-third of my career working on this single car," says LFA chief engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi, evidence not only of Tanahashi's tenacity but also of the LFA's unusually long gestation. Born of a clean-sheet concept etched in 2000, the first teaser car (then named LF-A) appeared at the 2005 Detroit show. Two years later came a revised concept; by then, camouflaged LF-A prototypes were making regular blitzes around the Nürburgring. Shadowy details emerged: Toyota was building a monster.

As inspiration, Tanahashi turned to Toyota's Formula 1 racing program, then playing to 3.0-liter V-10 regulations. So it was that the team sculpted an all-new, naturally aspirated V-10, this one a 4.8-liter with a 72-degree bank angle (optimal for smooth firing with a five-throw crank), dry-sump lubrication to lower the center of gravity (no giant under-engine oil pan), and an individual throttle body for each cylinder. Though it can't match an F1 car for revs, the LFA V-10 still spins like Karl Rove on a Tilt-A-Whirl: Redline is 9000 rpm. And while relatively compact and light, the engine screams with 552 horsepower at 8700 rpm.
Like AMG powerplants, each LFA V-10 will be handbuilt by one man. In fact, there are two; both are employees of Yamaha (which also designed the V-10's heads). Each man will finish an engine every two days.
As you might expect, the six-speed transmission (a rear-mounted transaxle) is a paddle-shift auto-clutch manual, but, likely due to manufacturing dictates fixed long ago, it's a single-clutch unit -- not a contemporary dual-clutch design. No slouch at spin himself, Tanahashi says, "I wanted the more natural shifting feel of a regular manual."
The LFA first materialized in aluminum. But when even the light alloy didn't meet Tanahashi's fastidious weight targets, he largely scrapped it and opted instead for carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The final LFA chassis sports a CFRP central tub with aluminum subframes front and rear; the package is wrapped in carbon-fiber bodywork. Total weight savings versus aluminum: about 220 pounds. All CFRP work is performed in-house. It doesn't hurt that Toyota has a long history in textiles, but switching from sweaters to weaving carbon fiber required lavish expenditures in tech and tools. (Look for future Lexus CFRP as Toyota monitizes its investment.)
The LFA rides on an aluminum suspension, dual-control arms up front and a multilink setup at the rear. Steering features electric power assist so as not to deplete a dollop of engine output.

The cockpit is a feast of carbon fiber, leather, metal, and Alcantara. It's all beautifully executed, if for the most part conventional (on the central console sits the same haptic mouse-like controller you'll find in, say, a Lexus RX). That is, until you see the primary instrument display: Behind the wheel lies what appears to be an attractive analog tachometer-except it's a color TFT-LCD illusion. When you select one of the four driving-mode switches-normal, auto, wet, or sport-suddenly the tach changes in scale and color (i.e., from black to all white with a thick redline in sport mode). Or push another switch and the tach...glides out of the way to reveal a host of digital information beneath. Extreme cool. Tanahashi denies that he opted for the LCD simply for the wow factor: "At first we tried an analog tachometer. But the V-10 revs so fast, the tach needle couldn't keep up!"
Toyota supplied two LFA prototypes for drives across the German autobahn -- plus hot laps on the ultimate proving ground: the 13-mile Nordschleife. Only two months earlier, I'd driven the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing around the same "Green Hell," so I was especially keen to sample and compare this rival LFA
First impression: The LFA rides hard. Really hard. No variable shocks; the chassis is chef's choice only. On smoother stretches of autobahn, the stiffness is largely irrelevant, but it's not hard to imagine the LFA growing tiresome during extended drives on brittle roads. The V-10 is scintillating: It pulls hard, flaunts seemingly hidden torque (that light package), and propels the car ferociously (Toyota claims a 0-to-60 of 3.7 seconds and a top end of 204 mph). At 6000 rpm it's just screaming away -- with 3000 rpm left! The sound is racy, but nowhere near as arousing as a flat-plane-crank Italian V-8.

Full-bore on the track, shifts are quick enough-but, again, the superstar blueboods with their dual-clutch boxes fare far better. Steering feel is solid, though when teasing out the limits the chassis is nervy. The LFA lacks the easy, "organic" feel of, say, the SLS AMG. In contrast, the Lexus is very much a "digital" car -- it brandishes all the requisite high-tech weaponry, yet it feels distant. It's the difference between a car from a company that's been making supercars for decades, and a car from a company that's making...well, it's first supercar ever.
Back to that price. Even at nearly $400K, Toyota admits it will lose money on every one of the 500 LFAs it will build. How much? Obviously, Toyota won't say. For comparison, base price of the carbon-fiber Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster is $500,750.

Remember, though, the LFA is first and foremost a corporate halo, a rolling Super Bowl ad intended to ignite passion and fire in a nonsupercar brand. Who really cares if the LFA itself loses a few deca-millions in the process? What matters is that the 500 cars do their part and set the hearts and pocketbooks of would-be Lexus buyers ablaze. (Incidentally, Toyota admits that LFA purchasers will be largely hand-selected for maximum visibility and marketing value.)
The Lexus LFA is an extraordinary feat of engineering. But surrounded by far less costly Ferrari 458s, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2s, Chevy Corvette ZR1s...$82,000 Nissan GT -Rs!...as a supercar it will need to swim like Michael Phelps to keep from drowning in a very deep pool.

TOKYO SHOW UPDATE: Carlos Ghosn unveiled Nissan's luxury sedan, the Fuga, which goes on sale in Japan in November and in the U.S. next spring as the new Infiniti M. Showing little of the handsome Infiniti Essence coupe concept, the Fuga/M instead looks like the big sibling to the Infiniti G/Nissan Skyline. Side surfacing is much like the G's, and the very fast backlight ends in a Mercedes-esque taillamp treatment. Up front, the grille looks like it's from the Infiniti FX, shrunk to an appropriate car size. Inside, the center console protrudes more than any we've seen lately, and the rear seat is highly contoured, suggesting that a fifth passenger in the middle isn't a good idea. The M thus comes off as a larger-than-G 2+2 sedan. In the North American market, we'll have a choice of three powerplants, the base 3.7-liter V-6, a 5.6-liter V-8 or a 3.5-liter V-6/electric hybrid using lithium-ion batteries
PREVIOUS COVERAGE: The 2011 Infiniti M series will essentially make its production debut at the Tokyo show as the Japanese-market Nissan Fuga, and more importantly, it will mark the debut of Infiniti’s first hybrid model, the M35 Hybrid. The M35 Hybrid will go on-sale as a 2012 model one year after the rest of the updated M range, which is slated to go on-sale in the spring of 2010 for the 2011 model year.
While the new M is a big debut for Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti (which isn’t sold in Japan, the vehicles are badged as Nissans), the M35 Hybrid will no doubt take center stage. Employing the company’s 3.5L V-6 gas engine and a version of the the laminated lithium-ion battery pack from the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, the M35 Hybrid combines them with an electric motor separated from the gas engine by a unique dual-clutch system which allows the car to act as a parallel hybrid with the electric motor either boosting performance or acting as a generator to recharge the battery. Infiniti expects it to be the most fuel-efficient model in the M range, though the company isn’t talking specifics yet.
Non-hybrid versions of the M will offer either V-6 or V-8 engines, which vary depending on the market. For U.S.-bound cars, the M37 will feature a 300-plus-horsepower 3.7L V-6 engine with an optional AWD system while the rear-drive M56 will boast a 400-plus-horsepower 5.6L V-8. European markets will forgo the V-8 in favor of a high-performance diesel V-6 while the Japanese-market Fuga will offer either the 3.7L V-6 or a smaller 2.5L V-6 engine. All models are expected to use a new seven-speed automatic transmission.

Complimenting the new engine options are a bevy of high-tech features designed to increase safety and performance. Computer-adjustable pedals work with an ECO-pedal program to increase fuel efficiency and with a Navigation-Cooperative Intelligent Pedal system to predict upcoming corners using the satellite navigation maps and decrease accelerator pedal pressure while increasing brake pedal pressure. Meanwhile, Active Stability Response will intervene in the pedals, steering and engine response to help keep the car stable in hard maneuvers and under control.
Other high-tech features include an active blind spot monitoring system that will intervene if the driver attempts to change lanes when another vehicle is in the way, double-piston shock absorbers for a smoother ride and a Forest Air-Con climate control system that can not only regulate temperature and fan speed but detect and control humidity and odors. It can even release a mild scent into the airstream that will make the cabin smell forest fresh.

This hotly anticipated, twin-turbocharged, all-wheel drive road burner is without doubt the star of Tokyo 2007. And with good reason: Nissan's GT-R is a technological tour de force, a halo machine for the brand, and an enlightened approach to the supercar. Its 3.8-liter, twin turbocharged V-6 will crank out an estimated 473 horsepower in US trim, along with a beefy 434 pounds feet of torque. Backing this all new, purpose built powerplant is a 6-speed autoclutch manual transmission that uses fast and smooth-shifting dual clutch packs, like Audi/VW's fabulous DSG transmissions. And it's mounted transaxle style in the rear for better weight balance. AWD is standard, in keeping with the car's mission of every day, anywhere, anytime performance, no matter the road condition or weather. Technology abounds: a data tracking system records driver performance and coaches improvement. A memory system prevents illegal modifications that might hurt fuel mileage or emissions performance. US pricing will be announced at the LA auto show in mid-November, but it costs around 7.7 million yen in Japan, which is in the mid $70,000 range at current exchange rates. The GT-R casts about the same shadow as a Mustang, and is striking in the metal. It will count the Porsche Turbo, Corvette Z06, and Jaguar XKR among its competitive set, yet is different from all of them. US sales will begin in May/June. Sitting quietly in a booth surrounded by other more glamorous and outrageously styled vehicles is the Toyota Tundra Hot Rod. Sure, making a hot rod at SEMA is no big deal, but when Toyota decides to do something like this it may need some special consideration. Not a lot of fanfare or glitz here, but good looking nonetheless. The truck is a standard regular cab 4x2 shortbed Tundra with a stock 5.7-liter V-8, six-speed automatic, and factory limited-slip. Maybe not such a bad idea given this particular setup is probably one of the lightest and fastest half-ton pickup trucks around.
Working with Sucker Punch Sally’s out of Phoenix, Arizona, the first step was to get the paint scheme settled. Candy Red flames seemed a natural choice with the Hot Rod theme, burning back into a matte black base coat. Hungry 305/60R18 Toyo Proxes blackwall tires use Bonneville Moon hubcaps to accent the visual look of the truck, while a custom Cherry Bomb exhaust gives the truck a unique sound. Inside, there’s a low-back bench with a custom matching headliner and dash pad to match. Likewise, four large brass dials look like they’ve come off a giant guitar amplifier. But as nice as all this detail is, the real work is in the bed.
The custom curly flamed Maple and aluminum accents are similar to the types of materials choices Fender makes when designing a new guitar. And, of course, topping off the bed are two plug-in ready amplifiers ready to play some old-time rock and roll. Too much? Maybe, but this is Las Vegas after all, and the Hard Rock hotel is just down the street.

Suzuki's long-awaited 2010 Suzuki Kizashi sedan is just starting to make its way to Suzuki dealerships, but that hasn't stopped the tuners from scoring a few Kizashis to dress up for the 2009 SEMA show. Here's a look at four customized Kizashis that will be on the floor at SEMA.

Road Race Motorsports has been making race cars out of Suzukis for a long time, so it's no surprise they got their hands on the Kizashi as fast as they could in order to create their Platinum Edition Kizashi. Digging in, they added a custom intake system, engine management system, Zeitronix data logging system and a custom dual exhaust. They then stiffened up the chassis and added Progress Technology springs and sway bars to take care of the handling and Rotora 13-in. brakes up front to handle stopping duties and complement their own Road Race 10.2-in. rear brakes.
Performance work done, Road Race turned their attention to the Kizashi's appearance, which they upgraded with their Sport Body kit. The kit includes Carbontrix custom front and rear fascias and a rear diffuser, to which they also added a custom grille, vented hood, and blacked-out roof. "Platinum Edition" graphics finish the package and let everyone know this is no ordinary Kizashi.

Also quick to snap up a Kizashi was Delta Tech Engineering, which also had its sights set on performance. They started by stripping the car and lightening it as much as possible. Under the hood, they fitted a cold air intake and custom exhaust to up performance while Koni provided new coilover shocks and springs to upgrade the handling. RK Sport, meanwhile, came up with a new body kit for the car while Katzkin took care of new seats and Kenwood supplied a new stereo system. Delta Tech finished off the car with custom HID and LED lighting it developed in-house for this project.

Fusing East and West, Westside Auto Group drew inspiration from both the Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle and vintage European style for its Kizashi Soleil (Soleil is French for "masculine sun," a nod to the Kizashi's Japanese heritage). Up front, Westside created a new fascia, grille and air intakes, then moved around the side and shaved the door handles. Reaching the rear of the car, they added a custom rear fascia housing a custom Yoshimura exhaust and a GT Super Car spoiler. R-Worx seven-spoke wheels wrapped in early-release Bridgestone Potenza tires and two-tone Napa Merlot/Bronzed Amber paint complete the package.
