There’s just a touch of understeer at the limit, and a delightful enthusiasm for rotation, which is easy to control and rein in with the all-wheel-drive system. We recorded 0.81 g of stick on the skidpad, better by 0.06 than the non-R/T Durango we tested.

Steering like this is a treat in an SUV. It’s slow off-center—all the better for relaxed highway tracking—and effort builds as the limit nears and the wheel offers a good amount of feedback. The R/T’s hero brakes need just 169 feet to stop the big bruiser from a freeway tempo. The brakes also exhibited tremendous resistance to fade: Five back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back panic stops varied in length by only three feet. The downside to the R/T is serious tromp from the 20s. They crash over bumps and potholes, and the stiffer suspension sends hefty tremors through the body shell and steering column. Our total was $43,400, eye watering but not totally unreasonable for a workhorse family vehicle with a stonking V-8.

Every Durango except the two-row-only Heat comes with standard seating for seven. The second- and third-row seats fold flat, but in order to do so, they are very thin, with hard cushions. And although they flop with simple one-handle actuation, the effort required to raise them is substantial. Maybe Dodge is trying to help American moms tone their arms. Also, third-row volume shrinks nine cubic feet compared with the last Durango’s. This used to be one of few SUVs that could comfortably haul three rows of adults, but no more. At least with the second row folded, access for the kids is easy.

This is all the more reason to sit in the left-front seat, where your right foot gets to conduct the Hemi underhood. It’s standard on the R/T, optional on the Citadel and Crew—$1495 for rear-drivers, $1895 with all-wheel drive. (The Heat and the Express only get the V-6.) With an iron block, pushrods, a 5800-rpm redline, and port fuel injection, the Hemi seems out of date compared with today’s high-tech mills, but high tech is hardly a prerequisite for great sound. The audio argument might be the best reason to upgrade to the barrel-chested V-8.
Hemi Hardship

As satisfying as the Hemi sounds, though, fuel-economy ratings drop from a (not particularly) high of 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for the rear-drive V-6 to 13/20 for an all-wheel-drive V-8. We got 15. We had hoped the Hemi Durango would be fleeter, but its 7.4-second 0-to-60 time only bested the rear-drive sixer by one second. There are two factors conspiring against the Durango: its tremendous weight (5512 pounds of proof that unibody does not mean light) and odd gear spacing. Fuel economy is the goal of the latter, and a tall fifth gear is crucial to achieving it, but there are better ways to get there. First gear is so tall that, driving around town, we initially believed the Durango was starting off in second—it’s not out of first until almost 50 mph, and second stretches nearly all the way to 90. Oddly, third—more of a “two-and-a-halfth”—only gets you another 10 mph before the redline looms again.

We understand that most buyers won’t be experiencing many redline 90-mph shifts in their Durangos, but this annoyance manifests in other, more mundane ways, particularly in passing maneuvers. This is Dodge’s dual-second-gear transmission, so there are two ratios for second: one used for upshifts and an even taller one used during kickdowns. If you’re caught behind a FedEx truck trundling along at 50 mph and pull out to pass, the downshift puts the Hemi at about 3300 rpm, a long pull from the 5150-rpm power peak. Instead of two-and-a-halfth, what this trans really needs is a one-and-a-halfth. Manually actuated shifts do bring rewarding rev-matched downshifts, though, reminding us of the hot-rod Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Still, we’re looking forward to the imminent arrival of a transmission with at least one more ratio.

We’re not surprised by how much the powertrain reminds of the SRT8 Jeep, but what really surprised us is how much the chassis does, too. With its engaging dynamics on top of sharp looks and a satisfying engine, the Durango is relatively rewarding from the driver’s seat. But could it get better than this? With comfier seats for the rest of the crowd and a more-modern transmission, yes, it could.

On most days, taking a test drive of the New Beetle at VW Santa Monica is a waiting game. More than a year after bug redux, car buyers still stack up five deep to get behind the wheel, as if queuing for a carnival ride. "We can't keep up with the flow," sighs VW dealer Jeff La Plant, who has nearly doubled his sales staff. "The New Beetle is like a magnet that draws people back to us."

Indeed, Beetlemania has revived Volkswagen in America. The whimsical bubble-mobile just keeps picking up speed--and the rest of the VW lineup is going along for the ride. Overall sales for the German auto maker are up 44.6% in the U.S. so far this year. Its market share, which sank below 3% in 2000, is up to 7%. And VW is on track to sell nearly 300,000 cars in the U.S. in 2010 - a level that Volkswagen has not enjoyed since the Nixon Administration. "VW is absolutely back on the map," says La Plant. "We're totally hip again."

But don't look for the return of the psychedelic VW Microbus next. Instead, think pickup truck. On November 26, VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech caught his North American executives off guard by making public his hope to offer a full-size pickup with car-like comfort. Company insiders believe that he has been squiring his family around Germany in a new, smooth-riding Toyota Tundra, a vehicle that moves pickups in the direction he wants to take VW. Piech says the pickup can be built on the same chassis as the 2011 model sport-utility vehicle VW is developing with Porsche.

But Piech's pickup plan is causing transatlantic tension. North American VW execs want Germany to hold off: They fear it could undermine VW's quirky, offbeat image, built around the Beetle, the Passat sedan, and the Jetta compact. A pickup, they argue, would be hard to pitch credibly in VW's humorous "Drivers Wanted" ad campaign. "We have to stay coherent in our image," says Jens Neumann, VW's top North America executive. "We still have to do a lot of thinking and discussing."

Piech, however, is hungry for the $10,000-per-vehicle profit that some pickups haul in for Detroit. And with price wars cutting VW's margins in Europe, he is increasingly looking to his booming North America operations, where dealers can command sticker price and above for their popular models, VW's Audi luxury line is also enjoying an American resurgence, with hot models like the TT coupe driving sales up 38.4% this year. "As we move upstream, profit margins are becoming better," says Neumann.

Still, the flow of dollars from America has been small so far. Of VW's $3.4 billion in pretax profits last year, North America contributed only $85 million, or 2.5%. Analysts project that North America could account for 5% to 10% of VW's global profits this year. "It's nice to have," says analyst Greg Melich of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. "But it's not a whole lot."

Still, the greatest challenge for VW is Piech's desire to pit the brand directly against Mercedes-Benz. In Europe, where taxicabs are Mercedes and VW is upscale, that may be reasonable, analysts say. In the U.S., however, Mercedes floats at the top of the automotive food chain, with VW several leagues below. Even so, VW's sport-ute is expected to be priced close to Mercedes' M-class in the $35,000 to $40,000 range. And in 2011, VW is coming up with a $40,000 luxury car. "Going after Mercedes could come at the expense of Audi," warns auto analyst Lincoln Merrihew of Standard & Poor's DRI.

China Car Market - Sales Rising Despite Restrictions

Everyone involved in China's car market now knows about the restrictions in Beijing regarding the registration of new vehicles. Credit Suisse even went so far as to issue a report predicting a downturn in sales of nearly 16% if other cities followed suit. However once again the doomsayers have been proved wrong and in fact new vehicle registrations in the country have once again broken all records.

Initial statistics on January's total sales seemed to tell a different story, early releases showed sales of 1.15 million cars in the month which would have indicated a down turn on the previous month but still a significant upturn on January 2010 where these numbers would have shown an increase of 17.9% on the previous year.

These figures were not the complete story and this week the China Association of Automotive Manufacturers (CAAM) released the official numbers for the month. This showed that 1.89 million cars were sold in the country in January; this was a significant upswing even over the preceding month where sales had received a significant boost from Beijing buyers looking to beat the new regulations.

Not only are these figures a new record in a market that is continually smashing records but they firmly establish China as the number one automotive consumer in the world. General Motors then confirmed this by formally announcing China as their number one most important area eclipsing even the US, terming the country as the "crown jewel of their empire" and setting out plans to increase both their product range and manufacturing for Chinese consumers.

That doesn't mean that it's all good news for companies and the local company BYD, formerly seen as a rising star of domestic auto production, is not having such a good time. Despite serious foreign investment in the business led by Warren Buffet, they are having a hard time selling their models which are no longer seen as serious competition by other manufacturers.

To combat this BYD have announced a series of price cutting measures on their F series cars, cutting up to 15,000 RMB off the sales tag of each model in the range. Whether this will be enough to clear a mounting backlog of vehicles from their dealer forecourts only time will tell.

There's no escaping that China will continue to be the biggest success story in new car sales for a long time to come, with a population steadily growing richer and with cultural values that give much "face" for buying a new vehicle the sky really seems to be the limit at the moment.

Ferrari 458 Italia Challenge

The 458 Italia Challenge is a mid-rear V8 berlinetta derived from the 458 Italia and represents the fifth model used by Ferrari in its single-series racing program. With the new 458 Challenge, Ferrari combines extreme performance, superb fun behind the wheel with unique driving emotions for its sporting, professional and gentleman-driver clients.

To reduce weight from the already light 458 Italia, engineers used thinner body panels and carbon fiber as well as Lexan wherever possible in this track-only model. Equipped with lightweight body panels and specially tuned suspension, the 458 Italia Challenge is the first Challenge racer to use the F1-Trac traction control system and it is Ferrari's first racing application of the dual-clutch seven-speed transmission. The F1-Trac system allows to constantly monitoring levels of grip for maximum high-performance road-holding and it is fully integrated with the E-Diff to guarantee maximum acceleration and stability into and out of corners. The ABS/EBD, F1-Trac and E-Diff calibration settings are selected thru the manettino placed in the steering wheel. It is the first time this solution has been adopted on a Ferrari Challenge series model. The driver can choose from three configurations: OFF (traction control deactivated), position 1 and position 2, which have progressively higher levels of control system intervention.

For the first time in a Ferrari's track-only model, the 458 Challenge is also equipped with the E-Diff electronic differential, which is already employed on the road-car version.

Direct-injected 4,497 cc V8 remains the same (558 hp at 9,000 rpm), but the seven-speed gearbox dual-clutch uses different ratios and a new calibration in order to optimize track performance. The interior is reduced to the essentials in the 458 Italia Challenge. Ferrari engineered the 458 Challenge to expose drivers to even higher performance limits and the proof is in the car performance. The 458 Challenge lapped the Fiorano race track in 1:16.5 during testing, which just two-tenths of a second behind the FXX and two seconds faster than its predecessor and track-mate, the F430 Challenge.

The new 458 Challenge is equipped with the last generation of Brembo CCM2 brakes integrated with the newest ABS system, which first debuted in the Ferrari 599 XX. How Remote Car Starters Work

During the blazing hot dog-days of summer, or the bone-chilling cold of winter, remote car starters work wonders for making your car comfortable. Without one, in the winter you have to bundle up to rush outside into the arctic blast of a cold-winter day, fumble with your keys as your hands go numb to unlock your door, and try to pry open your frozen door. Your teeth chatter as you start your car, then you rush back inside where it's warm while you wait for the car to warm up. But if you have installed a remote car starter, you push a button from inside where it is warm and cozy, and wait in comfort till you are ready to get into a warm, defrosted vehicle. But how do remote car starters work?

Remote car starters bypass the ignition switch, essentially allowing a control unit to "hotwire" the car to start by remote control. Several components must be installed and work together to make this possible.

The common components in remote car starters are:

* Transmitters- the key fobs that have the remote buttons.
* Receiver- the control unit that is installed in the car, generally under the dashboard.
* Relay set- controlled by the receiver, to handle the connections to bypass the ignition switch.
* Hood Safety Switch: If the hood is open, the remote car starter is disabled to prevent injury when someone is working or checking fluids.
* Wiring Components: Fuses, wiring connectors, antennas, zip ties, and other installation items.

Also, for many modern cars with anti-theft, you must purchase a separate kit specific to your make and model of car to bypass the anti-theft feature that prevents your car from starting if it were "hotwired".

As a safety feature, remote starters cannot be installed in manual transmission vehicles. There's not a reliable way for the control unit to verify the vehicle is not in gear. The last thing you'd want is to try to start your vehicle, and watch it take off with no one driving.

The transmitter is a miniature radio device that transmits an encoded signal telling the car to start. The antenna installed inside the car receives the signal, and carries it to the control unit. The control unit compares the encoded signal and verifies that the signal is from you. You wouldn't want a thief or a neighbor to be able to start your vehicle! Once the signal is verified, the control unit blinks the parking lights on your car so that you can see the command was received.

The control unit activates the relays to bypass the ignition switch to turn on the systems that run the engine, essentially as if you turned the key to the run position. If there's an anti-theft feature, it will activate the installed kit to send the correct "password" to the car to allow it to start. The control unit activates another relay, engaging the starter.

The control unit monitors to see if the engine starts- usually by monitoring the engine RPM signal, or by seeing the alternator charging the vehicle. If it doesn't start in a few seconds, the remote start will stop cranking the starter, wait for a few seconds, and try again.

Once the engine is running, the car turns on the parking lights to show you that the vehicle is running. The remote starter actuates more relays to turn on all your vehicle's accessories such as your wipers and blower motor.

The car will continue to run until either the timer expires which is generally set for 15 minutes, you press the stop button on a transmitter, or until you hit the brake pedal. To keep the car from shutting off when you get in, you put in the key, and turn it to the run position before hitting the brake. The car will drive normally after that, and will shut off when you turn off the key.

Remote car starters also come with several variations and options. There are integrated car alarms, and options for remote locking and unlocking of doors, or to pop your trunk.

Remote car starters generally require only basic hand tools and a general understanding of vehicle wiring to install. If you have the experience and knowledge to install a radio into a vehicle, then installing a remote car starter should only be moderately difficult. For people who don't have the time, knowledge, or tools, a remote car starter can also be installed professionally for a nominal fee.
