Nissan Micra Review

Nissan may be a little known car maker in India, but that’s about to change. Just wait till it launches the new Micra in India, for it will change the way you look at the company forever.

In the flesh, the new Micra doesn’t make much of a first impression. Some of that silvery tinge of excitement you get looking at a new car seems to be missing and the car looks quite familiar as well. The Nissan designers say they have stayed away from ‘edgy’ styling because, according to their surveys, sharp lines and creases give a fragile image, which they wanted to avoid. Instead, Nissan has deliberately gone for a more rounded look that looks more robust. The smooth shape also helps deliver a good drag coefficient as well – 0.32 is impressive.

However, the details that stick in your mind are the attractive, high-mounted light pods and the two-part grille. The arched profile of the cabin is something carried over from the Micra’s DNA, but there is a mishmash of lines at the rear, especially near the rear spoiler and the tail-lights. The Micra does come across as a cute and cheerful design which will surely appeal to women.

Step into the cabin and the oval and rounded theme abounds. You get a round speedometer, a round cluster of buttons on the central console, round vents and a round steering boss. The control stalks feel particularly solid and feel they could last forever.

The Micra is also pretty practical. There is good amount of space for odds and ends and the door pockets are of a decent size. However, the double glovebox which is standard in the European-spec cars is missing and the Indian version only gets a single and very tiny glove compartment.

Like all Nissans, there is no traditional key on this car. You get a keyless entry fob that allows you to yank the door open with it still sitting in your pocket, and the motor is fired with the help of a push button. The keyless start / stop feature is in fact a key feature! It’s the first for a B-segment car.

The Micra is powered by a 1198ccc three-cylinder motor that makes 79bhp but unlike other three-cylinder motors sold in India, there is no balancer shaft used. There is some amount of vibration at idle, which can be felt through the steering but it smoothens out a bit as you rev it. However, the motor responds well to a jab on the accelerator and the Micra moves forward with no hesitation.

This motor has more power than the VW Polo, and you do feel the combined benefit of this and the very light 945kg kerb weight. Nissan says it has engineered the car with fewer parts to keep the weight down, and it sure seems to have helped. The car feels nice and sprightly and acceleration is impressive enough to satisfy most drivers. The motor pulls all the way to 6000rpm and acceleration in and around 5000rpm is particularly strong.

Straightline stability on the car is impressive as well. With a wheel at each corner and most of the weight contained between the wheels, the Micra drives more like a big car than a little one. There, however, isn’t too much feel in the steering. The column-mounted electric steering feels a touch vague and lifeless which will disappoint enthusiasts. However, city commuters will be thrilled by the Micra’s very tight turning circle which was actually designed keeping Indian customers in mind.

Nissan has offered automatic climate control, a feature that’s not common among hatchbacks. And it’s got electrically folding mirrors. There’s a mini on-board computer which gives real-time fuel consumption and ‘distance-to-empty’ readouts. In fact, Nissan wants to make the feature-packed Micra one of its selling points.

However, features like steering-mounted audio controls are missing for the Indian model. According to company sources, Nissan is saving some of the other goodies like steering controls for the audio and Bluetooth for hands-free phone operation for a refresh that is being planned a year after launch.

Of course, all these features are reserved for the high-end model and in basic trim, you still get power steering and front power windows (manual at the rear). The air-con is standard but not climate control and alloys are replaced with bare-looking steel wheels.

The beige interior and generous glass make for a very airy cabin. The interior quality isn’t brilliant but pretty good. The build quality is between the Swift and the Polo, which is still the benchmark for interior quality. The front seats are very comfortable and Nissan has consciously made the nose of the car visible from the cabin; this is apparently a common complaint from first-time drivers who will make up a fair percent of Micra buyers.

At the back, headroom and legroom are surprisingly generous. The only grouse we have with the rear seat is that it’s too low, flat and with little under-thigh support. Nissan needs to improve the seat squab before launching the car in India. The boot too is fairly generous but there’s no split, the seat flips forward in one piece via a neat release latch.

It is clear that Nissan, known for its engineering and innovation skills, has the know-how to build very effective small cars. The new Micra may not look wildly exciting but behind its cheerful, cute lines lies solid engineering and innovation. How well Nissan tunes and adapts this car for Indian conditions remains to be seen but we are confident that the Micra will take to Indian roads like a duck to water.

What we don’t know is how Nissan will price the car. The sense we get is that it will be in that narrow window between the Swift and the Polo. Some say that Nissan might even undercut the Swift to get market share. If Nissan prices the Micra right, it has a winner on its hands.

Honda CEO : " Hyundai is awesome "

Honda’s CEO Takanobu Ito has said he sees Korean manufacturer Hyundai as a huge threat to the future of Japanese automakers.

The Korean firm has seen strong sales growth across the world in the last few years and it is currently the top selling manufacturer in Britain for retail sales.

“Hyundai is awesome,” said Takanobu. “They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving.”

Hyundai and its sister firm Kia have been successful across Europe and America in various scrappage incentive schemes. Smaller models such as the i10, i20 and i30 have proved particularly popular.

Ratan Tata and his Cars.......

The world knows Ratan Tata as the chairman of the Tata Group, India’s largest business conglomerate. Quiet and unassuming, Tata is a very private person and there aren’t many people who know that his life away from the office has a different dimension.

It’s a life that makes you understand why he is so emotionally involved with Tata Motors and why he single-handedly achieved the impossible with the Indica and the Nano. It’s also a life car enthusiasts would die for. Quite simply, Ratan Tata is crazy about cars. He can’t help it. Born a Parsi, the passion is deeply embedded in his DNA. Over the years Ratan has acquired quite a collection of cars and the pristine manner in which he maintains them explains why the term ‘Parsi owned’ fetches a premium. True to his clan, he is particularly possessive about his cars —
no one other than himself can drive them — and his gleaming collection, tucked away in a basement, is pampered to look nothing less than showroom-fresh.

Each car has its own bespoke cover made of a special material that doesn’t scratch and keeps moisture out. Trickle chargers keep the batteries topped up (as there is no time to drive during the week) and just in case Ratan misjudges how close the garage wall is when he slots nose first into the parking bay, there are wooden chocks in front of the front wheels to stop him short. Such is his attention to detail!

Tata spends most Sunday mornings behind the wheel of each of his cars, taking them out one after the other, for a short spin around South Mumbai. His latest pride and joy is a Ferrari California, probably the first in the country. Always happy to oblige a fellow enthusiast, it didn’t take much to convince Ratan to take me for a ride in it. The California looks absolutely stunning in ‘Rosso’ red (the colour all Ferraris should be) and beige leather interiors.

I can now see what keeps the 71-year- old Ratan Tata going in what must be a pressure-cooker environment at the top of his Rs 3,65,000 crore empire. There’s nothing like the gorgeous lines of a Ferrari and the sound of a quad-cam V8 to wash away the worries of Corus or Jaguar Land Rover. What a great way to unwind!

Maruti Launches new WagonR.......

Maruti Suzuki has raised the curtain on its blue-eyed-boy, the all-new WagonR. Maruti now prices the hatchback in par with its competition, with the base version priced at Rs 3.28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), rising up to Rs 4.12 lakh for the top-end (Vxi) variant with ABS and airbags.

The all-new WagonR that replaces the existing car model is the fourth generation and is based on a completely new platform. The WagonR will now be powered by the peppy 1-litre K-series motor, the same engine powering the Estilo and A-star.

Under the skin the car is all-new. The latest WagonR is underpinned by a brand new chassis that is leagues ahead of the outgoing model. Tailored blanks are used all over and these specially treated, sandwiched and layered pieces of steel help provide stiffness without adding wasteful bulk.

On the outside, substantial styling changes have been made. The square edges of the car are rounded out, particularly at the front end. The new WagonR gets a prominent nose with large lights, a wide grille and a massive, stretched air intake below the bumper. The ‘smiling’ grille, as Maruti calls it, is part of the company’s new-found styling language also seen in the face-lifted Estilo.

The passenger cabin has improved and now sport dual tone interiors with alluminum touches all around. The WagonR’s dashboard is embellished with silver-accented surrounds for the air vents and vertical and horizontal strips. The interiors feel much more upmarket than before.

Maruti hasn’t messed around with the car’s strength; the tall roofline, high seats and ‘spacious for a hatchback’ interiors promise to keep this car on the top of the charts.

Competent city SUV with killer price !!!!!

Toyota has launched the Fortuner SUV in India. The single variant vehicle will be retailed at Rs 18.45 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. In competition with other city SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Captiva, the Fortuner's pricing beats that of all these vehicles and comes as a proper surprise, given Toyota's brand standing in the country which could have had them price the vehicle a little higher too. With such competitive pricing however, it is clear that Toyota is here to weed the rest of the competition out.

With genuine 4x4 capabilities, the Fortuner is just not another city slicker and has fairly good off-road capabilities when it comes to getting out of sticky situations, making it a proper Sports Utility Vehicle as opposed to being just a large car. Its torquey engine is supported by a very smart all-time 4WD system, but what also makes the Fortuner a genuine city vehicle are its great interiors, space and ride comfort. With airbags for the driver and passengers and Toyota's acclaimed Global Outstanding Assessment design for crash impact, the Fortuner also comes across as a very safe vehicle.

2010 Porsche Panamera Exclusive Spy Video

It's already being referred to as Porsche 911 with rear doors and a back seat. Keeping that in mind, consumers can probably figure out that the Panamera, the first sedan Porsche has ever produced, will be a bit on the pricey side. And like every other Porsche on the market, they will be hard to come by. Of course, the Panamera is their answer the Mercedes Benz CLS and BMWs CS concept model. Consumers will get to see the newest in the Porsche - number 4 if you're keeping count - at the 2009 Geneva Auto Salon in Switzerland with American sales following later in the year.

With some borrowed components from the Cayenne SUV, the Panamera is a four-door coupe that is slung low to the ground. It looks like a stretched out version of the 911 sports car. The engine is in the front and there is a small trunk with sloped lift gate, something that is almost unheard of in Porsches. It is expected to be smaller and lighter than the CLS overall and should deliver the same high-quality handling and performance as the other three Porsche models.

The Cayenne is loaning their powerful V8s engines to the 2010 Panamera S model with a 4.8 liter engine, 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, top speed of 180, and 400 horsepower. The Turbo version has 520 horsepower. Both models will come in a six speed manual or seven speed automatic transmissions and the base model Panamera will come in the same options except with a V6 3.6 liter engine at 300 horsepower provided by Volkswagen.

The 2010 Panamera will be launched as a rear-wheel drive car with a possible all-wheel drive option coming later down the road. Porsche is even discussing a full parallel hybrid version of the Panamera, but like the all-wheel drive version, this will be two, maybe three years after the cars initial launch. Additionally, it is being rumored that the Panamera will also have the usual array of stability and ride-enhancing electronics with an air suspension as well as the custom trim options all of the companies other vehicles come with.

If you want one of the 2010 Porsche Panamera's, you may want to go to the dealer now instead of waiting. Porsche is only planning on producing 20,000 cars for worldwide sales. The United States will be lucky if they see 9,000 of them on their lots. Consumer advocates are advising that interested consumers hit the lots now and place their orders.

They will also need to bring their pocketbooks. To order one of these cars will require a hefty down payment as they are priced between $108,000 for the base model and going as high as $168,000 for the Turbo.

Stressful commuting could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to technology that will allow vehicles to 'drive themselves'.

A European Union project called SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) is to be launched to develop and test technology for vehicles that can travel in 'road trains' on motorways.

These 'trains' could cut journey times, reduce the number of road accidents and improve fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Cars joining the motorway would slot into a convoy of six to eight vehicles, then travel automatically, with no driver input, until the time came to leave the motorway.

How will the technology work?
Automatic cruise control already helps cars to anticipate traffic ahead and slow down accordingly. Developing this idea further, 'autonomous driving' technology would control acceleration, braking and steering, so that cars could travel together in convoy.

The first test cars will be launched in 2011, equipped with a navigation system and transceiver that communicates with a lead vehicle.

The lead vehicle will be driven as normal, controlled by an experienced driver who's familiar with the route. Cars joining the motorway will enter the road train using their navigation system, before allowing the autonomous driving programme to take control.

As drivers approach their exit point they will leave the convoy and continue driving as normal, while the remaining vehicles will automatically close the gap and carry on.

Potential benefits of autonomous driving
By travelling closer together, cars will experience less drag, which could reduce energy use by 20%. Road capacity will also be used more efficiently, with a subsequent reduction in journey times.

Safety could also be improved by the system, because it will reduce the risk of driver error or tiredness.

New Audi Technology Could Reduce Fuel Consumption By 20%

Reducing fuel consumption is no easy task, especially when considering how heavily we rely on motorized transportation. Audi, however, has designed a new system that they claim will be able to cut fuel consumption by as much as 20% compared to the 2007 level.

At the heart of the plan is A Start-Stop system that will shut down the engine when stopped at red lights or stop signs. As the driver engages the clutch, the engine will restart and return to normal operation.

Along with the new Start-Stop Technology, Audi is also planning on including a system that recovers energy during deceleration and recycles it back into the electrical system. While the start stop technology will provide the most noticeable returns, both systems will work to improve the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

Both of the systems will also be sending data to a computer program that will provide the drive with near real time data about how efficiently they are driving as well as offering helpful tips they could use to further improve their driving habits. The system is also able to notify the driver when they have reached the ideal shift point for those who prefer using the 3rd pedal.

Audi plans on releasing the system first on the A3 with the 1.4 liter engine as well as the A4 and A5 housing a 2.0 liter powerplant under the hood. From there, they plan on expanding to cover most of the lineup.

XR3 Diesel Hybrid Now Available Factory Assembled

Back in 2006, the XR3 diesel hybrid went on sale as a kit car. While it was great for the DIY-ers, anyone who wanted the vehicle but didn't have the time to invest in assembly was out of luck. A problem solved by the recent decision to assemble the XR3 at the factory and ship it to buyers from there.

According to Robert Q. Riley, the owner of the company, this was part of a long term plan to increase the availability of the hybrid. Offering the vehicle as a kit initially allowed the company to establish a solid foundation before moving into production realm.

Now, after establishing themselves, the company is able to offer the vehicle to consumers almost fully assembled. The details have yet to be released on what all will still need to be user installed, but one can assume the batteries are on the list.

When operating solely on electric power, the XR3 is able to traverse 40 miles without the aid of the onboard diesel engine. When the batteries are depleted, the small motor will kick on and provide enough energy to power the vehicle and recharge the batteries.

The XR3 can also be configured by the buyer, depending on their needs. Instead of using the standard 23 horsepower 0.9 liter diesel hybrid powertrain, you can opt for a 100 horsepower engine that will offer some respectable performance or stick with the 23 horsepower version and skip the electric portion. The latter of the 2 is said to offer 125mpg under normal driving conditions.

If the XR3 sees the success that is being projected, it could easily change the way we look at motorized travel in the near future.

Toyota's Supra Successor On Track for 2011 Delivery

For nearly 2 years now Toyota has been working on the FT-HS concept vehicle that was originally unwrapped at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. Since then, it has been in and out of the spotlight without providing any real information about production or pricing or anything for that matter. Now, it seems as though the Supra successor is on track for a 2011 delivery.

The production version of the FT-HS was originally slated for production in 2009, but delays and a declining market brought progress to a standstill. Assuming it stays on track for 2011, you should expect to see 2 different engines being nestled under the hood. The first will be a traditional gasoline powered powerplant that should be putting down similar numbers to the 370Z.

The second option will most likely be the hybrid drive train currently being used on the Lexus GS450H. The 3.5 liter V6 mated to a high output electric motor should be good for somewhere in the 375-400 horsepower range. The jump in fuel economy over the traditional 3.5 liter powerplant won't hurt either.

If everything pans out the way Toyota is hoping, we could see a production model sometime early in 2010 with deliveries starting the next year

International Engine Of The Year Award 2009

Every year, a group of automotive enthusiasts come together and are presented with a list of today's most highly rated engines. After sorting through the data, the group then decides which among them can be considered the best. For 2009, the title of International Engine of the Year goes to the 1.4 liter Twincharger manufactured by BMW.

The panel of judges is comprised of 65 automotive journalists from 32 different countries. Each engine is scored based a predetermined set of criteria and then pitted against powerplants of a similar class. The 1.4 liter BMW engine was also recognized as the Green Engine of the Year along with a gold medal in the 1.0 liter to 1.4 liter class.

What makes the 1.4L such a well suited engine is the use of both a turbocharger and a supercharger. Together, the forced induction systems

provide ample power at all engine speeds, therefore eliminating the need for a larger engine. The twin charger system is also mostly responsible for producing a maximum of 178

horsepower and 177lb/ft.

Even more enticing is the 45.5 mpg average the 1.4L is able to return, thanks to how efficiently combustion occurs and how much power is available at slower engine speeds.

Along with the three previously mentioned awards, several others were given out based on varying criteria.
