Gassing
When the cell is fully charged, it freely gives off hydrogen off at cathode and oxygen at the anode, the process being known as ‘gassing’. Gassing at both plates indicates that the current is no longer doing any useful work and hence should be stopped. Moreover, when the cell is fully charged, the electrolyte assumes a milky appearance.

Voltage
The voltages cease to rise when the cell becomes fully-charged. The value of the voltage of a fully-charged cell is a variable quantity being affected by the rate of charging, the temperature and specific gravity of the electrolyte etc. the approximate value of the e.m.f is 2.1 or so.

Specific Gravity Of The Electrolyte
A third indication of the state of charge of a battery is given by the specific gravity of the electrolyte. The density of electrolyte decreases due to other production of water, whereas it increases during charging due to the absorption of water. Specific gravity can be measured with a suitable hydrometer which consists of a float, a chamber for the electrolyte and a squeeze bulb.

Color

Portable Batteries
These are used for starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) in internal-combustion-engine vehicles. Examples are: lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries etc.

Vehicle Traction Batteries
This is the class of battery we will be dwelling such on. STATIONARY BATTERIES
These falls into two groups, (a) standby powered system which is used intermittently. (b) Load leveling system which stores energy when demand is low and, later on, use it to meet peak demand. Standby applications have increased in recent years with increasing demand for uninterrupted power systems (UPS) and a tremendous growth in new telecommunication networks. The UPS provides “clean” a.c supply free of sage or surges in the line voltage, frequency variations, spikes and transients to modern computer and electronic equipment. Banks of sealed lead-acid standby batteries have been recently used in telecommunication systems and for UPS applications.

Nowadays, cars are powered by electric; a change from the Stone Age errand of gasoline engines. The benefit of electric car is huge; ranging from being environmental friendly, to saving money for the families for other expenses. I know that the big question on your now mind is “HOW CAN I MAKE MY OWN ELECTRIC CAR”?
Let me start my saying it is not a difficult task.

First, what do you need to begin?

• Simple tools found in any household workshop- saws, drills, wrenches etc.
• A place to work- shop, garage, barn or even outside is fine
• Detailed electric car plans

Before you get started you will need a vehicle to do the conversion with. I say conversion because any vehicle will work for this project, but some are better than others. Gas or diesel doesn’t matter as you will be removing the engine anyways, and everything related to fuel and exhaust.

Your new electric car will produce no fumes either. We think that’s great.

You will need a vehicle with a standard transmission though. Automatic transmissions just don’t work with electric motors for cars.

Don’t worry; you won’t have to learn how to drive a standard though if you don’t know how. Your electric car will drive just like an automatic. Just put it in gear and drive. It’s that easy, no shifting in town at all.

When you pull up to the stop light for instance, the electric motor just stops. It’s all explained in detail in the electric car plans.

Your new electric car will have great acceleration too. We were amazed at how fast it was off the line in town.
Your electric car will be able to go 50 mph and have an effective range up to 200 miles on a single charge depending on your choice of vehicles and your driving habits.

We kind of lean towards using small trucks now that we have done 3 conversions ourselves. Small trucks like the older Toyota Tacoma (around 1995 or so) offer a lot of room for battery placement. They are light and strong too, a perfect combination for this project.

Small cars work well too, but offer fewer options for battery placement.
Our best range vehicle is actually our Toyota Corolla, well over 200 miles between charges.

This is not a difficult project either although you will need a helper at times. Those extra hands when you are attaching the DC motor are needed.

How much does it cost?

Around the world, the high cost of gasoline (fossil fuel) is long news, it have made families to play catch-up with their daily needs. Recently, my family and I embark on trip to the outcast of my town, to see my grandmother. She was not feeling fine and need much life around her, she also have a farm that was seriously threaten by weed. My grandfather cannot handle such a tasking job alone not at his age.

But this one was different, because of my grandmother sickness and I needed to be there because of my strong attachment to her. I have to squeeze the trip budget to make sure; all things need for the trip was in tight.

So we journeyed down, it was stressed free and we had fun, my grandparents where happy to see us. I had to give a hand give a hand in the farm and around the house. As I was away in the garden, my kids started to explore their new environment. Unfortunately, they had the fuel container busted, the fuel was history. After spending four days with the old man and woman, it was time to go. As l reached for the container to top up, the container was empty. I demanded for an explanation, one of the kids own up for being responsible.

The possibility of reporting to work the following has been serious threaten. The next nearest filling station was 10 kilo meter. To compound by woos l had no money then.
