Toyota GT86 TRD New Hybrids - Paris Motor Show

Toyota has a long line of debuts planned for the upcoming Paris Motor Show, including several hybrids and the official debut of the GT86 TRD Performance Line of accessories.

The TRD items, including everything from interior and exterior parts, to mechanical upgrades, will be offered separately, rather than put together in pricey packages. Show goers will also get to experience the GT86 virtually with a GT86 racing simulator.

Several European market hybrids will also debut, including the Auris hatchback and Auris Tourer (wagon). Sharing a platform with the Corolla they will be a look ahead to the 2014 Corolla which will arrive in America in the near future, though it’s not clear if Toyota plans to offer a Corolla hybrid

In addition to these is an all new Verso compact MPV , while Toyota is sure to draw onlookers with the Toyota Racing TS030 Hybrid WEC race car, which after an embarrassing debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finished in second place at its most recent race.

Lexus bringing the all new LS 600h F Sport to the 2012 Paris Motor Show for its European debut, alongside a mystery concept car, the details of which are still hidden.

This new concept vehicle will be released online on September 17, but it’ll be up to speculation until then. Odds are that it is a new IS concept, although a new CT200 is also a possibility. A new RX is due sometime soon as well, although this concept could also be something brand new from the Japanese luxury brand.

Also debuting for the first time in Europe is the LS 600h F Sport, that most powerful hybrid in Lexus’ lineup. This car is reserved for the European market, although in America just get the LS 460 F Sport.

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP - Paris Auto Show

Mini has revealed its fastest production car to date the second-generation John Cooper Works GP. Set to make its public debut in September at the Paris motor show, the go-fast hatchback builds on the solid performance credentials of the standard Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works with a slightly more powerful engine, upgraded suspension, reinforced body, larger brakes and various styling changes.

New adjustable dampers allow the ride height to be lowered by 0.8 inch. The geometry has been completely revised, with the front dampers turned 180 degrees and mounted upside down in a move Mini says helps provide significantly improved cornering ability, owing to added camber offset.

The car can lap the Nurburgring in 8 minutes, 23 seconds a whopping 18 seconds faster than the first-gen John Cooper Works GP.

Further changes include the adoption of grippy Kumho Ecsta tires; Recaro sports seats up front; a substantial strut brace set across the space usually dedicated to the rear seat; larger brakes; a re calibrated electronic-stability program with a so-called GP racing mode; and a range of subtle aerodynamic tweaks that help improve the drag coefficient.

Mini plans to limit John Cooper Works GP production to just 2,000 units, a quarter of which are heading to the United States, which is set to become the new car’s biggest single market.

Mitsubishi will display an Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at the Paris motor show.

The body is based on the new Out lander, which debuted in July in Russia. It uses an electric system derived from the i-MiEV small car and other Mitsubishi vehicles.

The electric Outlander will operate in three modes: EV, series and parallel. EV mode uses only power from the rechargeable lithium-ion drive battery. In series mode, the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine operates as a generator; the system switches into that when the battery dips below a certain level. In parallel mode, both the battery and engine power the wheels.

The 12-kilowatt-hour battery has a cruising range of about 34 miles.

The Outlander also runs a twin motor four wheel drive system with two electric motors, one for each axle. Mitsubishi says it delivers a better response and more control than conventional systems. It's comprised of fewer parts than a mechanical system and works with the company's all-wheel-control system.

Outlander sales are down about 20 percent in the United States from last year. The SUV will hit the streets of Japan in early 2013, and then spread to Europe, North America and other markets around the world.

The Audi R8 facelift was officially revealed ahead of the Paris Motor Show in September. If you’re not a fan of the car, the changes will appear small at first glance for Audi R8, let’s start with the cosmetic side of things. The front end has receive a makeover: new fascia with full-LED headlights, a six-point grille and redesigned intakes.

Round the back, the biggest change in my opinion would be the exhaust system. You can no longer tell them apart, as both the oval tips of the R8 V10 and the quad tips of the R8 V8 have been dropped in favor of a simple but very cool circular design.

Still setting the V8 and V10 apart is the shape of the side blade for the engine air intakes, which have a kink and are larger for the bigger of the two, as well as differences in the diffuser and splitter design. The R8 facelift rides on new 18-inch wheels with tires sized 235/40 front and 285/35 rear for the base car, or 19-inch with tires 235/35 and 295/30 for the V10.

Now, onto the engine front, where both the base 4.2-liter V8 and 5.2-liter V10 remain (sadly) untuned. This means you’ll still have 424 hp (430 PS) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) for the V8 and 518 hp (525 PS) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) for the V10. This will keep the current owners happy, but the facelift comes with a better gearbox, as the 6-speed automated manual R tronic has been replaced with a new 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission.

The R8 V8 Coupe takes 4.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) with the new R tronic box, while the V10 does this in a very supercar-like 3.6 seconds and also gets a new top speed of 314 km/h (195mph).

If you want to go even faster, Audi has launched a new range-topper called the V10 Plus. This is powered by a revised 5.2-liter with 550 PS (542 hp) which replaces the GT, a special version that was limited to just 333 examples.

Audi also plans to sell its electric-powered R8 e-tron, though we should have more details about that in Paris.

If you want a hot hatchback, you’re not exactly wanting for choice these days. From affordable superminis to exotic six-cylinder monsters from BMW, there’s something for everybody. However, there’s only one with quattro all-wheel drive that also offers a relaxed, luxury attitude to life.

Yes, it’s the S3, and there’s a new one on the way, a fact clearly demonstrated by the numerous prototype sightings. But when exactly will we be able to buy the new Audi S3? Pretty soon actually, as the car will debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, which is going to start at in September.

The news comes not from an official Audi press release, but from a speculative report released by Autocar (Autocar.co.uk) magazine. They say the S3 will bow together with the new five-door 2013 Audi A3 Sportback.

The new S3 will make use of a turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI engine pushing out around 280 hp. That’s not a significant increase in power, but at least you can expect economy to be improved, most likely through cylinder deactivation or start and stop.

One of the more impressive debuts from Russia's local auto industry at the ongoing 2012 Moscow International Auto Salon is the Lada X Ray, a concept for a small, three-door crossover model.

The styling of the X Ray is the brainchild of the company's new head designer, Steve Mattin, who has previously worked at Mercedes-Benz on various models including the ML-Class and GL-Class, before he joined Volvo in 2004 where he oversaw the designs of S60, V60, and XC60 concept.

You have probably already seen the pictures but now we have two videos of the prototype to share with you including one that shows the car in motion on the road.

While AvtoVAZ Lada doesn't have any current plans to produce the crossover study, its styling is believed to influence the company's future portfolio, where Renault and Nissan Alliance currently own 25 percent of AvtoVAZ, Russia's biggest automaker, but plan to invest about $750 million to take a 75 percent holding in the company. The deal will come into force by 2014.

City Safety, an innovation first shown on the Volvo XC60 to avoid noise-to-tail urban accidents, has been further improved for the Volvo V40. It now works at up to 50 km/h (31 mph), instead of 30 km/h (19 mph). Insurance claims involving the Volvo XC60 show that City Safety has reduced personal injury claims by 51 per cent, while vehicle repair costs have been lowered by more than 20 percent. Little wonder that many insurers now reduce premiums for Volvo drivers.

Pedestrian Airbag Technology, Pedestrian Detection and City Safety are all part of Volvo's IntelliSafe safety philosophy. Other new safety features on the Volvo V40 include a Cross Traffic Alert radar system - which helps you reverse out of a parking space and see traffic coming from the side - and an improved Blind Spot Information System (BLIS). This new radar-based technology still warns of vehicles in the blind spot, on both sides, but in addition now warns of vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear - making it safer, for example, to change lanes on the motorway.

Volvo also has a time-honoured reputation for environmentally friendly motoring - the three-way catalytic converter with lambda sensor is among Volvo's many green innovations. A car that is seamlessly connected to the driver, which is easy and pleasing to use, which handles in a very intuitive way and which cares for people."

The design is particularly striking. The exterior was styled by Volvo's Californian studio in Camarillo by American Chris Benjamin. "I wanted an emotionally engaging car that looked like a coupé but had the practicality and functionality of a five-door hatchback," he says. The Pedestrian Airbag Technology allowed him to lower the bonnet line and lower the whole car. It's actually 29 mm (just over an inch) lower than a C30 coupé, one of the lowest hatchbacks on the road. The rear styling is based on the C30, which in turn took cues from the classic P1800ES of the '70s.

The cabin design priorities were to give, "a large car feel inside a small car". The dash is wide - accentuating the big car feel - while a new high-tech TFT (thin film transistor) instrument digital display is available. Three different instrument displays can be selected, including an "eco" setting to help you drive more economically and a "performance" mode to better suit more spirited driving. There is also a more classical "elegance" mode. TFT instrumentation is available as an option on all models in the Volvo V40 range.

The Volvo V40 comes with Bluetooth music streaming and handsfree mobile connectivity as standard. A navigation system with directions in the main instrument cluster, and a mobile app that can find your car in a large car park, lock or unlock doors and even give you a journey log.

These choices are all part of Volvo's innovative infotainment system, giving outstanding connectivity, security and personalisation.

The seats are new and continue Volvo's fine reputation for occupant comfort. The rear seat is prominently sculpted to offer maximum support for two and sees them positioned slightly more inboard than is the norm, improving comfort and forward visibility. Nonetheless there is room for three in the rear, and a trio of three-point seat belts (a Volvo invention, of course) in the back seat.

Driving pleasure was a priority. "We sought dynamic leadership in this class and I'm confident we have achieved it," says Stefan Karlsson, Manager of Vehicle Dynamics and Calibration. "Our goal was to offer a truly connected feel, to give great driver confidence. If a driver feels well connected, he or she feels in control. This not only improves driving enjoyment, it also improves dynamic safety."

Ride comfort was also crucially important. "We just don't accept that agility should come at the expense of comfort. It is not necessary."

The damping - a key quality in comfort and driver interaction - was mostly calibrated by testing on British B-roads, "the best real world testing ground," says Stefan Karlsson. "They are extremely demanding roads, which is why so many cars struggle on them. They are brilliant for damper tuning, which in turn improves ride comfort, steering response, handling and agility."

The all-new Volvo V40 comes with three different diesel engines, and three petrol engines. They include a 1.6 diesel, which gives an outstanding and class-leading CO2 figure of 94 g/km (equivalent to 78.5mpg on the combined cycle), a sporty 177hp 2.0-litre five-cylinder diesel, and the high performance T5 petrol, good for 254hp. All engine and gearbox versions have start/stop technology, to boost economy and reduce emissions.

Volvo Car UK expects the D2 to be the big selling engine, with 63 per cent of UK sales.

Three trim levels are offered - ES, SE and SE Lux. Prices start at £19,745 for the D2 ES. The cars are all extremely well equipped. It combines a new, more aggressive, Under Priority frontal design element the distinctive new Toyota face design execution, with a Keen Look detailing reinforced by hybrid specific LED lights.

Flanked by aerodynamically efficient front aero corner treatments, the strong centre section of the lower bumper houses a larger, trapezoidal lower grille optimising engine bay cooling whilst emphasise the new hybrid's ground hugging stance and low centre of gravity.

A slimmer upper grille, elegantly sculpted to highlight the hybrid blue Toyota badge, is flanked by slim, Keen Look headlights which emphasise the new hybrid's bold, horizontal front styling. Exclusive to the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, the projector type headlamp unit features standard chrome plated 'eyebrows' lipped with an LED 'lightguide', and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

In profile, identified by hybrid badging and exclusive wheel designs, the new hybrid shares the stylish, cab forward silhouette and long wheelbase profile of the standard Yaris. The exterior overall length is only 20 mm longer than the standard Yaris.

To the rear, the hybrid blue badged tailgate incorporates a new, LED-type high mounted stop light, and clear lens combination lights incorporate a LED tail and stop lamp signature unique to the new Yaris Hybrid.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is available with a choice of unique 15" and 16" aerodynamic wheels, and a range of eight body colours including a model-specific new Pearl White finish execution.

Toyota pioneered this Pearl White finish, which has required the introduction of a bespoke production process at the TMMF plant where the new hybrid is built. Reinforcing the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's uniquely stylish and environmentally-conscientious design credentials, the new colour delivers a cool, high quality image (particularly in sunlight) when the soft, silken lustre of pearl is at its strongest.

On board, Toyota Yaris Hybrid customers benefit from a driver-focused cockpit with hybrid-exclusive details and trim finishes.

Silver ring-trimmed three dimensional instrument dials incorporate a hybrid system indicator and feature a combination of white and blue backlighting. The centre console-mounted Toyota Touch system incorporates a hybrid energy monitor illuminated in blue as well as the dual zone air-conditioning.

The dashboard soft-touch pads and front door trims are finished in an exclusive, Ice Grey colour, and blue stitching trims the leather upholstery, steering wheel and hand brake. A unique gear lever to the hybrid derivative comes standard with blue finish on the gear knob.

Downsized full hybrid powertrain for fuel and space efficiency

The new Yaris Hybrid introduces the first downsizing of Toyota's proven Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD) technology. It represents a significant engineering breakthrough in the packaging of the full hybrid powertrain.

The new powertrain has been optimised for installation within the vehicle's compact, extremely efficient packaging design, without detriment to either system quality and performance, or passenger accommodation and load space.

Every key HSD component has been reduced in size and weight, and both the fuel tank and battery are installed under the rear seat. As a result, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid maintains identical occupant space and the same 286 litre luggage capacity as that of the standard model.

The downsized full hybrid system combines a 1.5 litre petrol engine unit with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack. The total system weight is 201 kg, 20% (42 kg) less than that of an Auris Hybrid.

Compact, Lower Displacement Petrol Engine

The 1,497 cc, 16 valve, DOHC Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with VVT-i is based on the engine block of the second generation Prius, but has been completely re-engineered. It is 50 mm shorter and 17 kg lighter than the 1.8 litre unit of existing Toyota full hybrid powertrains, equating to a 10% reduction in length and a 17% reduction in weight.

The new engine generates a maximum 55 kW/74 DIN hp at 4,800 rpm and maximum torque of 111 Nm from 3,600 to 4,400 rpm. With a focus on lower emissions and the minimisation of mechanical friction for improved fuel efficiency, some 70% of all engine components are either new or redesigned.

Overall, the thermal efficiency of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid petrol engine has been improved by 6% over that of the second generation Prius, contributing to improvements in both fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

Newly adopted engine technologies include a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, an electric water pump, the elimination of the auxiliary drive belt, a low-friction timing chain, a lightweight, resin-based intake manifold and a compact exhaust manifold.

When used in combined with a cooled EGR system, the Atkinson cycle engine offers significant gains in fuel efficiency and the reduction of emissions.

In the Atkinson cycle, compression and expansion are asymmetrical, and the inlet valves close late, delaying compression. This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, converting combustion energy to engine power more effectively. As a result, the exhaust temperature is lower than that of conventional engines. The cooled EGR system reintroduces cooled exhaust gas into the intake system, further reducing engine operating temperatures.

Allied to a small, lightweight, multi-function radiator, the adoption of an electric water pump both enhances engine warm-up performance and reduces cooling friction loss, improving fuel efficiency. The elimination of a mechanical pump drive belt reduces friction, further improving fuel economy.

A new, more compact, hybrid-exclusive resin-based intake manifold combines light weight with improved quietness through the reduction of both vibration and noise. And the use of highly efficient, 12-hole atomizing fuel injectors reduces both fuel consumption and emissions.

The exhaust system features a new, low heat capacity, maniverter-type exhaust manifold. By positioning the catalytic converter much closer to the engine exhaust port, it decreases the catalyser warm-up time by 24% and contributes to a marked improvement in emissions during shorter journeys.

Downsized Hybrid Transaxle

Housing the electric motor, generator, power split device and double-motor reduction mechanism in one lightweight, highly compact transmission casing directly comparable in size to that of a conventional gearbox, a new transaxle lies at the heart of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system.

The use of a smaller E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission and a more compact electric motor effects a 6% reduction in the length of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's hybrid transaxle and an 11 kg weight saving over that of the Auris Hybrid, creating the most compact hybrid transmission yet engineered by Toyota.

Generating an immediate maximum of 45 kW and 169 Nm torque during acceleration, the new electric motor has been made smaller and lighter through the optimisation of the magnet material, and the winding of the coils with flat, rather than round, wire. The motor cooling structure has also been improved, allowing for a smaller, yet more efficient and powerful motor.

The transaxle now incorporates a multifunctional motor reduction gear within the power division mechanism, and a new gear deceleration mechanism abolishes the use of chains.

Gear tooth grinding and shaving technology similar to that used on the Auris Hybrid effects a notable reduction in transmission noise and vibration. This is further lowered by the adoption of a newly designed torsional vibration damper. Its smaller diameter made possible by the use of a three spring structure. The new, lightweight damper helps suppress the transmission of engine vibrations to a minimum level.

The optimisation of lubrication both improves transaxle efficiency and minimises energy losses. A new lubrication mechanism is adopted, in which each gear and bearing is lubricated by combing up the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with the rotation of the final driven gear and counter driven gear, reducing driving force losses.

The use of a split construction oil catch tank which supplies oil for both the motor/generator and gear lubrication lowers the dynamic oil level, reducing agitation losses.

More Compact Hybrid Battery

The new, downsized full hybrid powertrain also features a smaller, 144 V nickel-metal hydride battery with a more efficient vehicle electric power management system.

The number of cells has been reduced from the 168 of the current, Auris Hybrid battery to only 120, composed of 20 modules connected in series. This effects a decrease in volume of 20% and a weight saving of 11 kg, allowing for the installation of the new battery entirely under the rear passenger seats, with no intrusion into the cargo loadspace.

In addition to this reduction in size and weight, battery charging efficiency has been improved, and the pack state-of-charge recovery time has been decreased by 67% compared to that of the Auris Hybrid.

New Power Control Unit with Smaller Inverter and Converter

Due to a reduction in hybrid system current and voltage, the system's Power Control Unit has also been made smaller and lighter through the development of a more compact inverter and switching unit.

Smaller and lighter than that fitted to the Auris Hybrid, the new inverter features a newly structured capacitor, reduced energy losses and improved cooling, enhancing fuel efficiency.

By optimising the layout of internal components, the size and weight of the DC-DC converter have also been reduced. And the composition of the noise filter has been revised to enhance unit quietness.

Compared to the Auris Hybrid, unit output current has been reduced from 120 to 80 A and output voltage lowered from 650 to 520 V, saving system energy with no loss of performance or efficiency.

Hybrid System Performance

Combining the power of a 55 kW petrol engine and battery powering the electrical motor, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's highly efficient powertrain generates a maximum 74 kW/100 DIN hp system output. It offers the best balance of performance and fuel consumption/CO2 emissions in the B segment.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid will accelerate seamlessly from 0-100 km/h in 11.8 seconds, and on to a maximum speed of 165 km/h. Conversely, it delivers an average fuel consumption of just 3.5 l/100 km and segment-best CO2 emissions of only 79 g/km, whilst allowing customers frequent driving in modes that emit zero NOx, PM or CO2 emissions. Its exceptional fuel efficiency gives the Yaris Hybrid a driving range of 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel.

Hybrid Synergy Drive in Operation

Over the course of any journey, Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® system operates in several different modes to maximise the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's' overall efficiency. At rest, the engine stops automatically to save fuel. Under operating conditions of low engine efficiency such as start up and low to mid-range speeds, the vehicle runs on the electric motor alone, thus eradicating CO2, NOx and PM emissions.

Under normal driving conditions, power allocation is constantly adjusted between engine and electric motor to combine optimum performance with maximum fuel efficiency.

Via an Electronically Controlled Braking system, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator during deceleration and under braking to effect regenerative braking, optimising energy management in the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system by recovering kinetic energy (normally wasted as heat under braking and deceleration) as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.

Well balanced dynamics, ideal for city driving

Building on the inherently quiet, smooth power delivery of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive®, the fundamental elements of intrinsic driving pleasure - such as acceleration/braking feel, balance and agility - have been thoroughly refined without any compromise in the new Yaris Hybrid.

Toyota's engineers have undertaken exhaustive testing to ensure the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid's dynamic abilities will meet customer expectations at all vehicle speeds and in all driving scenarios.

Full Hybrid in operation

Recent real world tests with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain reveal that the Yaris Hybrid zero emissions driving accounts for around 66% of the average commuter journey length and around 58% of the total journey time, with the petrol engine being switched off.

The electric motor's ability to deliver maximum torque from the vehicle acceleration start provides significant benefits during the stop/start driving of urban traffic conditions, combining brisk acceleration from a standstill in near silence with class-leading acceleration under full throttle of 0-50 km/h in only 4 seconds.

The new Toyota Yaris Hybrid's seamless, E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission benefits from a new control system to create a more progressive engine rpm increase during vehicle acceleration. Optimised at 70-90% throttle opening, the new system suppresses excessive increases in engine rpm under acceleration, offering drivers a more natural-feeling, linear relationship between vehicle and engine speeds.

Supplementing this enhanced E-CVT transmission, two alternative 'on-demand' drive modes may be selected to further increase driving efficiency, performance and fuel economy.

From start-up and at speeds up to 50 km/h the new Yaris Hybrid automatically operates in EV mode, driving under electric motor power alone. The driver may also select EV mode manually. This unique driving mode is only available to drivers of full hybrid vehicles.

With vehicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero CO2, NOx and PM emissions for up to two kilometres. Because the petrol engine is switched off throughout its operation, the EV drive mode contributes to a significant reduction in the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's overall fuel consumption.

In ECO mode, throttle response to aggressive accelerator pedal inputs is reduced and air-conditioning control optimized for improved fuel economy. Depending on driving conditions, the ECO mode can help drivers achieve about 10% reduction in fuel consumption versus the normal mode.

Optimum Weight Distribution for Balanced Driveability

The extensive use of high-tensile steel within the new Yaris Hybrid's construction not only saves weight, but also offers greater bodyshell rigidity for handling stability. Some 50% by weight of the body is formed in high-tensile steel, allowing for weight reduction with no loss of torsional stiffness.

With an unchanged 2,510 mm length wheelbase, the front overhang has been increased by just 20 mm to accommodate the downsized full hybrid powertrain. With both the fuel tank and the new, more compact hybrid battery located well within the vehicle wheelbase and as low as possible, the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid combines a particularly low, 550 mm centre of gravity with 63:37 front/rear weight distribution to deliver well-balanced driveability.

Enhanced Aerodynamics for Class-leading Drag Coefficient

Aerodynamic efficiency is fundamental to fuel efficiency, vehicle stability and quiet running, and every element of the new Yaris Hybrid's bodywork has been styled to optimise airflow and minimise drag.

Sized to optimise hybrid powertrain cooling, both upper and lower front grilles have been carefully shaped to both smooth and minimise the intake of air into the engine bay.

The profiles of the front bumper aero corners, bonnet, steeply raked A pillar, door mirrors, roofline, rear spoiler, rear bumper aero corners, the rear combination lamps and even the wheels have all been designed to maximise the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's aerodynamic efficiency.

In addition, numerous underbody airflow rectification components have been adopted to create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris Hybrid. These include a front spoiler, a large engine undercover, and front, centre and rear spats. A rear undercover incorporates vertical fins which create a laminar flow effect to enhance ride stability.

As a result, Toyota's new full hybrid boasts a class-leading drag coefficient of just Cd 0.286.

Agile Handling and Responsive Steering

The new Yaris Hybrid shares the standard Yaris' proven combination of MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension. Modifications to both spring and damper rates are optimised based on the new full hybrid's weight distribution.

The independent, MacPherson strut front suspension shares the mass and vibration reduction measures introduced on the standard Yaris, optimising the system's road tracking performance and minimising vibration whilst delivering appropriate ride comfort, driving safety, agility and grip.

The rear torsion beam suspension also benefits from the mass reduction measures and system enhancements introduced on the standard Yaris, once again reducing vibration and enhancing ride comfort, while improving vehicle agility.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid features a quick steering gear ratio of 56 mm/rev to deliver a better steering feel and vehicle response. The bearing rigidity of the rack and pinion gearing reduces friction and system play, further enhancing accuracy and feel. The vehicle has a class-leading turning circle of only 4.7, allowing for great manoeuvrability in congested city streets or whilst parking.

Powerful Regenerative Braking and Low Rolling Resistance Tyres

Incorporating Electronic Brakeforce distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), the new Yaris Hybrid is equipped with an Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system which coordinates the control of both hydraulic and regenerative braking.

The new full hybrid is fitted with ventilated disc brakes to the front and solid, discs to the rear for powerful, progressive and well balanced braking efficiency.

Coordinated control of the hydraulic and regenerative braking systems maximises the regeneration of energy by the electric motor during deceleration and under braking.

Fuel efficient tyres offer ultra-low rolling resistance and enough levels of grip, while their reduced vertical stiffness further improves ride comfort.

An unbeatable value proposition in the B-segment

Its segment-first, full hybrid technology offers Toyota Yaris Hybrid customers outstanding value for money through an unparalleled combination of competitive price, low maintenance and running costs, and high residual values.

The Yaris Hybrid is competitively priced in the segment, comparing particularly favourably against diesel powered vehicles. However, customer convenience is not compromised, with features such as dual auto-air-conditioning, automatic transmission, full electric drive and stop and start fitted as standard across the model range.

Best-in-class CO2 emissions of 79 gr/km combined with superior fuel efficiency offer customers exceptionally low running costs and, in many countries, significant tax incentives or benefits.

The Toyota full hybrid consumes only 3.5 l/100 km over the European homologation combined cycle, allowing customers to drive up to 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel. At just 3.1 l/100 km, the urban cycle homologation fuel consumption is the lowest in the segment, contributing to further city driving fuel savings.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive® system has been specifically designed for low maintenance and outstanding durability. The powertrain has been designed with no requirement for the clutch, starter motor, alternator belt and timing belt traditionally used in other vehicles. With no need to either service or replace these parts, customers can realise a saving of around 1,5001 Euro over 100,000 km.

And, thanks to the efficiency of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's Electronically Controlled Braking system (ECB), the brake pads life expectancy can reach 100,000 km.

Combining this component longevity with reduced labour times during servicing, Yaris Hybrid maintenance costs over 100,000 km are expected to be amongst the lowest in the B segment, realising an additional saving of around 1,000 Euro.

Rigorously assessed for performance and durability, and backed up by over 14 years of in-service experience, the full hybrid battery is designed to last the entire life of the car.

The new Yaris Hybrid benefits from a three year/100,000 km warranty, extended to five years/100,000 km on hybrid system components. Warranty data from the Prius and Auris Hybrid has already confirmed the outstanding reliability of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain.

Hybrid reliability has also been confirmed by the Prius' consistent high ranking in both the JD Power 'Lowest Problems' survey and the TüV quality report.

Initial residual value forecasts for a 3-year period and 60,000 km already award the Toyota Yaris Hybrid best-in-class status in Germany (51%) and UK (41%). With both Prius and the Auris Hybrid also rating highly in their respective classes, this reinforces the high levels of confidence customers place in Toyota full hybrid powered vehicles.

Environmental performance without compromise on comfort or convenience

Priced to be strongly competitive against rival B segment diesel vehicles, the new Yaris Hybrid will be available in a choice of two grades - Active and Style.

The new Toyota Yaris Hybrid range offers customers outstanding value for money, even without the low-CO2 incentives and tax benefits that are available in many markets. It combines an extremely generous standard equipment specification with the added value of Toyota's unique, full hybrid powertrain driving experience.

The Active grade is fitted, as standard, with a smooth E-CVT transmission ideal for the urban environment. An all-electric EV driving mode, a Stop and Start system and a Hill Hold Assist function further reinforce the ease, simplicity and relaxation of the full hybrid powertrain driving style.

Steering wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth switchgear, front power windows, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), driver's seat height adjustment, hybrid-blue stitching to the upholstery, dual zone automatic air conditioning and the Toyota Touch on-board multimedia system are also fitted as standard from the Active grade.

Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface which represents an affordable approach to on-board multimedia systems. It incorporates an AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility and automatic phonebook synchronisation at each connection.

A USB port allows for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iTunes album cover art. In addition, the system incorporates a rear view camera. The image is displayed on the full-colour screen when reverse gear is engaged, to assist with parking manoeuvres.

Specific to the Yaris Hybrid, Toyota Touch also incorporates a Hybrid Energy Monitor which displays the real-time energy flow within the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. Vehicle information displays include remaining fuel range, instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption per minute over the last 15 minutes and time elapsed since last engine start. The system is available in seven languages - French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian.

To the comprehensive standard equipment of the Active grade, the Style grade adds front fog lamps with chrome ring surrounds, smart entry with push start, front armrest and 16'' alloy wheels.

Optional equipment for both Active and Style grades includes privacy glass, an 8-speaker premium sound system, cruise control and a full length panoramic sunroof.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is equipped, as standard, with seven airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Corner Stability Control, (CSC), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), offering customers the highest levels of safety. In 2011, the Yaris was awarded the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

Toyota Touch & Go

Building on Toyota Touch, Toyota Touch & Go equips the new Yaris Hybrid with the best value for money navigation system on the market.

The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings and motorway signposting. It not only offers drivers a choice of the fastest or shortest route to their destination, but also the one with the smallest environmental impact - an 'Ecological' route option.

Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to a Google Local Search function -the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.

The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display, and a USB-based photo viewing function.

Several Touch & Go Apps are available for download such as Park &Go, fuel price information, weather details and parking space information.

TMMF manufactures the only full hybrid in the B-segment

Originally conceived as a highly compact plant -with limited parts stock and an optimised production line layout contributing to a notably streamlined manufacturing process- Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has been building the Yaris for over a decade.

The Yaris has already established a reputation for outstanding levels of Quality, Durability and Reliability. With the addition of further derivatives including the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid, TMMF remains committed to delivering vehicles with the highest levels of built-in quality in the B-segment.

Yaris Hybrid manufacturing has introduced further complexity and new challenges to the assembly process, and increased the range of Yaris models produced on the same line to a record high of 62 varieties at TMMF.

On average, each Yaris requires the assembly of over 2,600 parts, with around 80% of total parts common to the standard Yaris and the Yaris Hybrid. However, there are 400 new, hybrid-specific components, and 40% of all assembly processes for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid are either new, or required adaptation. Because of the plant's very compact size, stock management has had to be further optimised, and sequenced delivery organised for a larger number of parts.

Over 4,000 hours of Yaris Hybrid assembly training was provided to TMMF members, with a focus on three key areas: assembly techniques for new on-line parts, part variety recognition amongst components of a similar kind, and the meeting of key quality targets. Specific attention was paid to the inverter assembly, this component being highly sensitive to dust and body intrusion.

Specific safety training in how to handle high voltage parts was provided to some 50 plant members, and new safety procedures resultant from the silent running of vehicles in EV drive mode established. In addition, a new, hybrid-specific, high quality pearl white paint finish was introduced at TMMF for the first time.

Despite these changes, and additional logistic complexities such as sequencing delivery of a higher number of parts, the continuous Kaizen and production line streamlining inherent in the principles of the Toyota Production System have meant that, overall, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid takes not much longer to produce than the standard Yaris.

Befitting the Yaris Hybrid's environmental credentials, the TMMF plant itself has seen the recent implementation of numerous environmental initiatives to minimise waste and lower power and water consumption.

Waste production has been reduced by 34% over the last 10 years, and since 2007, 100% of waste is recycled or recovered.

Through Toyota's continuous improvement activities, the plant has also achieved average savings per car of 27% in energy, 67% in water and 48% in VOC (the volatile organic compounds produced through solvent usage) over the same period.

In 2011, 60% of the plant's total water needs were covered by either rainwater - collected in a specific 6,200 m3 basin, or by recycling used water from production processes at an in-house waste water treatment station.

A 1,020 m2 photovoltaic membrane has been installed on the plant roof, providing half of the electricity needed for the administration building. And the press shop incorporates a 400 m2 solar wall, pre-heating the outside air to save on heating energy and CO2 emissions.

Dispensing with the need for packaging materials, all car components are delivered from suppliers to the plant in 400,000 reusable plastic boxes, reused for over 10 years.

With TMUK already assembling the full hybrid Auris, the start of Yaris Hybrid production at TMMF makes Toyota the only manufacturer to have two full hybrid technology production facilities in Europe, reinforcing the company's commitment to local manufacturing of high technology vehicles.

The plant currently manufactures around 1,000 cars a day, corresponding to one new Yaris driving out of the line every 68 seconds. TMMF expects to produce around 200,000 vehicles in 2012, of which 25% hybrid.

Beginning with the first generation fourteen years ago, over two million Prius units have been sold worldwide. Toyota Prius remains the world's premier eco vehicle brand, and has made great strides establishing consumer trust in hybrid technology. Only 2 years after its launch, nearly 100,000 third generation Toyota Prius have been sold in Europe. And it continues to appeal to customers choosing Toyota for the first time. During the first half of 2011, 50% of European Prius sales were to customers coming to the Toyota brand from one of our competitors .

The new Prius, presented at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, features a new, more dynamic frontal treatment. The revised, Under Priority front bumper design places the emphasis on an enlarged lower grille, in keeping with the new face of the next generation Toyota family. A new, clear lens headlamp design features a revised LED lamp configuration, and daytime running lights have been incorporated in the bumper.

The door mirrors, which include redesigned indicator lamps, now have a power folding function and the rear combination lamps have been redesigned to make the car instantly recognisable in the dark. The optional solar roof can be now ordered with a choice of a new 15" wheel design or the existing 17" alloys.

The new Toyota Prius will be available in a range of 8 exterior colours, of which two, Bordeaux and Dark Blue, are new. On board, the sensorial quality of the Prius interior has been raised through the availability of a new, black interior, the addition of silver inserts to the air vents and centre console, a hybrid blue push start button and the availability of new, high grade seat upholstery. The centre console includes a newly designed arm rest which opens vertically and has an integrated open type cup holder finished with a silver ring. Inside the arm rest, the USB and AUX connections are now located at the front of the storage space.

The multi information display has been improved with a 16 gradation step Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD), which gives a clearer and more three_dimensional display. Driving support functions now include an EV indicator lamp and two new functions: Monthly Fuel Consumption Record shows the average fuel consumption of both the current and 5 previous months. Eco Savings allows the user to set a target fuel consumption (e.g. that of his previous car) and current fuel price. When the actual fuel consumption is lower than the preset target value, the meter displays the amount of money the user has saved during the month.

The new Toyota Prius' Intelligent Parking Assist system has been improved to allow even more efficient and faster parking manoeuvres. It is now able to recognize parking spaces even when there are no parking bay lines. In addition, monitor displays and voice navigation will guide the driver to the necessary starting point for the system to be activated when space sufficient for parking is detected.

The new Prius offers customers a unique range of multimedia equipment choices. Fitted as standard, Toyota Touch, a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface, represents a new approach to convenient, affordable, on board multimedia systems. It includes a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with streaming facility, a USB port, the facility to display iPod album cover art, a rear view camera, access to vehicle settings and an Energy Flow monitor.

Toyota Touch & Go Plus builds on the Toyota Touch multimedia unit by adding numerous new, advanced technology features to Toyota's remarkable touch screen multimedia system. Equipped with 11 speakers, it features advanced voice recognition for navigation address input, one shot destination entry, music search and play, and phone contact search and call. It also incorporates email send and receive, a text_to_speech message readout facility, a calendar and, through a Gracenote database, a 'Play More Like This' music function. Enhanced satellite navigation mapping incorporates 3D city modeling and landmarks, and an additional Traffic Patterns database showing the average speed on road segments en route depending on time, day and month. The system includes 3 years free map and software updating.

Toyota Touch Pro is the most sophisticated satellite navigation system yet offered by Toyota. This premium quality multimedia system features a high resolution 7.0 inch touch screen interface with a 'home' screen, displaying the most relevant air conditioning, audio and navigation information.

With a choice of 20 menu and guidance languages, the system covers the whole of Europe. It offers a comprehensive range of advanced features including voice recognition, automatic map zoom at intersections, 3D city model and landmark graphics, an on line Points of Interest search facility and the projection of supplementary driver's navigational guidance in the head up display. The system also provides access to SMS messages and emails, and includes a 'text_to_speech' message readout facility. A rear camera with dynamic guidance lines to help manoeuvring in confined spaces is fitted as standard.

Toyota Touch Pro also incorporates DAB/DAB+/DMB digital radio as standard, making it compatible with a new advanced Transport Protocol Export Group (TPEG) traffic information service . Based on a digital communication channel, TPEG represents a significant improvement over existing, RDS TMC analogue systems because it can carry far more information .

Not only will its pin point accuracy enable better navigation routing, but it will also supplement a basic traffic event and flow service with information on parking availability and fuel prices, adding additional information including speed limits and weather thereafter. Each of the new multimedia systems can be combined with a JBL Premium Sound System featuring GreenEdge technology (standard on Toyota Touch Pro) which helps to maximize energy efficiency by reducing operational power requirements by up to 80% of those of a conventional on board audio system.

The new Toyota Prius benefits from increased body stiffness, thanks to extra welding spots and reinforcements. This has allowed for the suspension to be tuned in a more forgiving manner, without losing dynamic ability. In addition, redesigned bracing has increased steering column rigidity, improving steering feel. Sound proofing has been added to further limit the intrusion of wind and driving noise into the interior. The latest Prius returns 3.9 l/100 km in the combined cycle, and generates CO2 emissions of only 89 g/km. Still the lowest emitting vehicle in its segment.

With global sales passing 2.4 million units, the Toyota Prius maintains a peerless reputation for reliability, durability and low cost of ownership. In the 2012 TÜV Report on long term reliability and vehicle quality (published by Germany's leading technical inspection association), the Prius continues to show the lowest number of defects, once again ranking No 1 overall this year. In the two to three year old category, just 1.9% of the models tested showed any signs of defect (down from 2.2% last year).

An important facet of the Toyota full hybrid vehicle market expansion, the new 2012 Prius will now become the first full hybrid vehicle available as a complete stand alone model range Prius, Prius+ and Prius Plug in Hybrid. The three models will significantly expand the Toyota Prius customer base and subsequent sales: the Prius+ targeting growing European families who require the space and flexibility of a larger, seven seat vehicle, the Prius Plug in Hybrid appealing to a new group of environmentally conscientious early adopters thanks to its extended EV range of 23 km. Prius+ and Prius Plug in Hybrid both go on sale throughout Europe in the summer of 2012.

Skoda Citigo

"Citigo" is the name of Skoda's new small vehicle. The brand's new model will make its debut in its domestic market, the Czech Republic, before the end of this year, with other European countries following at the beginning of summer 2012. With this 3.56-metre-long vehicle, the Czech-based car maker is extending its product portfolio and entering the small vehicle segment (A00). Offering maximum utilisation of space and four seats for passengers, the Skoda Citigo will be launched as a three-door, with a five-door version to come in 2012.

The design of Skoda's new city car includes many elements typical of all its vehicles. The designers managed to give the car a distinct look that declares at first glance: this is the new Skoda. The finned grille set in a chrome-plated frame and precisely shaped headlamps give the car the typical Skoda look. The designers have done a fantastic job on the rest of the car's body 3.56 metres long, 1.65 metres wide and 1.48 metres high, the Skoda Citigo is one of the smallest vehicles in its segment.

The key target groups are young drivers, young families with young children looking to get themselves a second or even third car, and also 'best agers', i.e. customers who are rather cost-sensitive and have a rational approach to cars on one hand but high demands for quality, design and safety on the other. The Skoda Citigo is a perfect mix of these properties. Depending on market demands, up to four trim options will be available: Easy, Active, Ambition and Elegance.

In line with its motto 'City Clever', the Skoda Citigo is an ideal car in and out of the city. It offers surprisingly generous interior space, a thing that is not taken for granted in the small vehicle segment, but is typical for Skoda models. The car's long wheel base - 2.42 metres - provides enough comfort for four passengers even on long trips. The volume of the luggage compartment is 251 litres and can be extended to 951 litres by folding down the rear seats.

The Skoda Citigo's interior offers space, quality and precision, thanks to the clear and transparent arrangement of all elements as well as the two-colour dashboard in higher trim levels. The front headrests are integrated into the seats, as well as a number of other smart solutions, make the new Citigo a 'simply clever vehicle' à la Skoda. The interior design includes numerous storage compartments, cup holders and multimedia systems, as well as storage pockets on the sides of the front seats. In addition, a special handbag hook integrated in to the glove box opening mechanism, and a photograph holder on the central console, are two clever interior elements. In the luggage compartment a pop-out storage rack can be locked in its top position, and a set of nets prevents loose objects from sliding around.

The vehicle boasts a number of solutions to provide overall comfort. In the three-door version, the 'Easy Entry' system allows easy access to the rear seats. The front passenger's seat can be moved and folded forward to ensure easy access to the rear seats.

The Skoda Citigo places great emphasis on safety. For the first time in a Skoda vehicle, the designers have used a Head-Thorax side airbag to protect the heads of both the driver and the front seat passenger. Along with a number of other items, this system is part of a safety package that is impressive for this segment. In addition, active safety is enhanced by the 'City Safe Drive', a new brake assistance system based on a laser sensor that is activated automatically at speeds below 30 km/h to identify a danger of collision. Depending on the speed and the traffic situation, this automatic braking solution may completely prevent a collision or at least reduce its seriousness. The risk of bumping into the car ahead is thus reduced significantly in city traffic. Along with the Volkswagen up!, the Skoda Citigo is currently the only car in the small vehicle segment to offer the emergency braking functionality.

Two new, three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engines will be available after the Skoda Citigo's launch (44 kW/60 HP and 55 kW/75 HP). The engines and the transmission have been designed to provide optimum economy in cities and their surroundings. Reaching the operating temperature even on short distances, the engines are highly economical. The highly economical Green tec version offers an average consumption of 4.2 l/100km and 4.3 l/100km respectively; with emissions of 97 g and 99 g CO2/km respectively. The fuel consumption and emission levels are indeed low - 4.5 l/100 km and 105 g CO2/km with the 44 kW engine and 4.7 l/100 km and 108 g CO2/km with the 55 kW unit.

Despite their low volumes, the engines reach high torque at low noise levels. The 1.0 MPI engine is used as the platform for alternative-fuel units, such as CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). CO2 output of this version will be from 79 g/km. Besides the manual transmission that is available from launch, Skoda will offer a five-speed automatic transmission in 2012 as an alternative to make this new small vehicle even more comfortable.

2013 BMW-3 Series Touring

The new BMW 3-Series Touring has been a known quantity for months now. But its wagon-shaped Touring (or Sports Wagon here in the U.S.) counterpart hasn't, beyond spy shots and spy videos, and certainly not in M Sport Package configuration. Now, things are a bit clearer.

Not that BMW didn't already have a good idea of what to expect. With the new 3-Series' basic body shape, the extended roof and liftgate of a wagon, and now, M Sport package accents, it's a predictable design--but still interesting for wagon fans. The M Sport package adds a definite dose of aggression to the look, with more sculpted bumpers and side skirts, larger air inlets, and, though not yet spied, likely interior M-themed upgrades as well. It also appears to be nearly identical to the M Sport packaged launched with the 2012 3-Series sedan.

It's worth noting that the M Sport upgrades appear to be different from the M Performance range unveiled for the 1, 3, and 5 Series earlier this year, potentially offering buyers an intermediary step between the M Division-styled upgrades and a standard 3 Series.

The 2013 BMW-3 Series Touring/Sports Wagon is certain to share its powertrain with the rest of the 3-Series lineup, including, here in the U.S. (if it comes to the U.S.), the 328i-badged 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 240 horsepower, and the 300-horsepower 3.0-liter turbo inline-six of the 335i. While the sedan is available with a manual transmission, the wagon may stick with automatic-only configuration.

Inside, expect more of the same BMW 3-Series design and equipment options as you'll find on the new 3-Series sedan. Now for the downer the 3-Series Touring/Sport Wagon may not come to the U.S. at all. Instead, we may get the 3-Series Gran Turismo.

MINI John Cooper Works GP
