Peak Oil and the light at the end of the tunnel

For over 100 years we have relied on oil as a cheap, energy dense and portable form of power. Many advances such as plastics, ink, medicine, fertilizer, crayons, bubble gum, soup, glass and tires are heavily dependent on cheap oil. There is only a finite supply of oil in the world, and demand is increasing as the third world industrializes.

Peak oil, in a way, has already come: many countries and many production techniques have peaked, fortunately as demand has increased so has technology and our willingness to explore across the globe for new pockets. We’ve had to dig deeper and get creative in squeezing oil out of unconventional sources. There are still sources to tap, they’re dirtier, offer lower returns on energy invested and much harder to get at but they’re there. Unfortunately, the oil will eventually become too expensive and too sparse to viably meet our current energy demands and then we’ll need something new. Here’s our review on the subject.

Ghetto Blasters & Apple’s Manufactured Individualism

At Carsort we’re pretty big believers in individualism and we just love it when people do their thing. We wanted to do a post on the mobility of stereos and what an awesome invention the ghetto blaster was and how the whole phenomena around personalizing your car, your bike and your ghetto blaster rose up.

When we were coming up with this infographic we realized that Apples products have almost completely sterilized the mobile entertainment space so we switched tack. They pitch individualism with weird monotone dancing hipsters but the truth seems quite different, you end up with the same device everyone else has. Now that would be fine if apple sold their products like toasters but they don’t, they sell them like they’re magic golden eggs, so special and cool in a slick white box. You’d think just by buying an apple product you’d stop farting, smell good and dance like Usher. You won’t.

The truth of the matter is that ipods and iphones are quite boring, this infograpahic celebrates the individual.

Firefly has quickly become a cult classic, after it was cancelled by Fox in 2002, after airing only 11 episodes (out of order). Firefly was created by Joss Whedon who is best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer and is set to direct and write The Avengers movie set for release in the summer of 2012. Firefly is a space western set in the 25th century where the renegade crew of the Serenity try to stay one step ahead of the long arm of the Alliance.

We’re super excited to be launching Carsort. Our goal is to help you choose the best car for you. The site has a few core features:

On the main page of Carsort you can jump to some popular recommendation roundups such as city runabouts, value muscle and family haulers
You can use the recommend cars feature to specify what’s important to you and let Carsort help you understand the vehicles that match your needs
While using recommend you can create a favourite list that can be shared with friends and move a car into focus to quickly compare to the other options. Easily jump to a in-depth comparison of the focus car and any of the other cars.
Our compare cars feature lets you put any two cars head to head, for instance the BMW 135i vs the 370z

We’ve been busting our butts to get this release out and have managed to put it live a month ahead of schedule. We choose to launch early and let everyone start playing with it. We’re definitely missing cars and information – all the car nuts in the office are more than aware of this but this shall pass and awesomeness will prevail.
