If we receive a complaint, we respond immediately.

If there is a veterinary emergency, we drop everything and go.

Two of our vehicles permanently have horse boxes attached, so if a cart horse is injured, collapsed, or severely ill, we can load them immediately.  This rapid response has saved countless lives.  But there is one challenge we simply cannot escape…

Petrol!

Our inspectors drive hundreds of kilometers every week across the Cape Flats, responding to emergencies, doing welfare checks, and preventing suffering before it starts.

Our monthly petrol bill is R20 000+, and with fuel prices on the rise, it will become harder to keep our inspectors on the road where cart horses need them most.

We are asking our supporters to please help keep our Inspectors and EWP’s on the road.

Every liter of petrol helps us reach the next cart horse that needs us.

Once darling Queenie was seen to, it was Fancy Face’s turn to be attended to by our vet, Dr Lee from Cape Vet.   Her neck bite wound needed to be checked and she is healing well, no infection!

Some much-needed antibiotics and pain meds and draining the wound with a special solution. Fancy Face is calm and trusting that she is in good hands.

All better, wound cleaned out, all bandaged up and resting with her human who has been really worried about her.

Because Fancy Face has been standing, she was due for a much-needed pedicure from our farrier Marlin who worked on her oh so gently. She loved it!

As I was filming and taking photos, I did not realise how the events would unfold on 19 April 2024.  But it still sits with me as do so many of the other stories that unfold at CHPA and how I thank the heavens above that we exist and that we are so blessed to have YOU support what we do!

Both Queenie and Fancy Face bore the brunt of Kamali, a stallion that is too old to geld, that keeps on getting out of his paddock.  Queenie’s hock got kicked and Fancy Face was badly bitten.  Below is the video of them both arriving for veterinary treatment at our clinic in Epping.

Fancy Face and Queenie getting some nice nummies after their arrival at the clinic. Dr Lee from Cape Vet wasted no time and took X-rays of Queenie’s hock.

Queenie’s hock out of the bandages. As you can see from the X-rays and Inspector Diana and Dr. Lee’s face, it did not look promising. She had a fractured Tarsus, (hock).

Queenie’s handler walked her slowly to the back paddock, assuring her all will be good with the world. Putting an animal down is never easy for a vet as you can see. With her owner present and grazing, Queenie would soon be out of pain.

Queenie was sedated and went down quietly. Pet Farewells came to collect her and gave her the dignified burial she so deserves. Rest in peace special girl, we are blessed to have been there in your time of need.

In the past, cart horses endured overloading, abuse, poor health conditions, lack of access to professional veterinary care, substandard stables, and widespread backyard shoeing practices. Shockingly, 80% of these horses were unfit for roadwork.  Donors have witnessed the remarkable transformation we’ve achieved. Today, we are proud to report an 80% compliance rate, but sadly, 20% remain non-compliant.

However, we don’t overlook non-compliance. We take action by confiscating and rehabilitating these horses at our Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre, ensuring they are mended back to mental and physical health. Our goal is to find them permanent homes where they will never have to endure cart work again.

This is what it is all about. A man and his horse trying to make a living for his family.

Be it a newly born foal who was attacked by dogs, a much-needed tetanus injection, a horse recovering from choke, a horse also attacked by dogs, a serious eye injury or a mom that has just aborted her foal.  CHPA will see to their veterinary needs.

Being the second month of our new financial year, our vet bills are sky high once again.  Euthanizing a sick or injured horse, is not how we operate!  We owe it to them to give them a fighting chance.  Every time a horse is in need, CHPA call out the vet or truck them to Blue Cross Vet in Newlands Cape Town.

In May 2022, we were called to look at a bump on Scarlet’s face. It was rock hard and not soft at all.  After X-rays and specialist consultation, Dr Lee from Cape Vet Equine Practice found that she had two infected teeth. The teeth would have to come out.

The dentist worked for six hours to get just the one tooth out. Not to worry, Scarlet was sedated and monitored throughout the whole procedure.

More x-rays were taken just to make sure the procedure was a success.

Scarlett’s story took another turn last week when a different, more complex ailment surfaced.  Scarlet was under treatment for a ligament injury and then became lame overnight.  When Dr. Lauren examend her, we found a fracture.  Scarlet had somehow broken her leg! We suspect it might all have started with a hair line fracture, but we will never really know for sure.

There was no other choice but to send this young girl over the rainbow bridge, where she will experience no more pain.

Throughout Scarlet’s journey, CHPA was there for her every step of the way, even in her last hours.  Your generosity and giving spirit allow us to do that for Scarlet and so many others like her.

The driver, deeply concerned, amazingly contacted CHPA to request assistance. Inspector Jolize quickly responded and brought King Mick back to our Epping Clinic where Dr. Lee was already waiting for him. Upon arrival, pain relief medication was administered and his injuries carefully assessed.  King Mick had the side of his nose and jaw cut open with a smaller bump above his eye.
