After winning the award for design in the Concepts and Prototypes class at the prestigious Villa D’ Este Concours and then going on to prove its durability with the completion of the gruelling 39th ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hour race, Aston Martin V12 Zagato road car goes into production in 2012, strictly limited run of up to 150 from $500,000 USD, hand made at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon

Based on the V12 Vantage and sporting a handcrafted aluminium and carbon fibre body, the V12 Zagato is a homage to the iconic DB4GT Zagato, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The original DB4GT Zagato was revolutionary in the 1960's. Funnily enough, they were to make 25 limited models, but no one bought them, so they only made 20. If you have one now, you should expect to fetch over $2.5mill USD.

Two V12 Zagatos entered last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hour endurance race. Aston Martin has for the last five years entered their close to the road car prototypes, to subject it to the toughest 24 hour test covering more than 230 laps and over 3,700 miles.

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s Director of Design said: "The V12 Zagato is an elegant yet brutal design which reflects the great balance between race performance and pure Aston Martin style.

Featuring a handcrafted aluminium and carbon fibre body, the V12 Zagato delivers a beautiful and muscular design not possible using pre-formed panel techniques. Iconic Zagato design cues include the double bubble roof created in this case from five separate pieces illustrating further the intensity of craftsmanship involved in the construction of the V12 Zagato.

The V12 Zagato combines Aston Martin’s most dynamic bonded aluminium platform with the power of the 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque.

Aston Martin Vantage GT4 at Daytona

This Multimatic 4.7 litre V8 GT4 is just grunt covered in an Aluminium skin, racing in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series opener.

The car was driven by Multimatic drivers Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster.

2012 Pagani Huayra, the Italian hyper car

Pronounced wai-rah, is a $1.4million dollar Italian mid-engined hyper car, named after Huayra-tata, a South American wind god. An apt name considering it houses a Mercedes-AMG 7 litre, V-12 engine, fitted with dual turbochargers and produces over 700 horsepower, the body weighs just 1350kgs and is shaped like a wing. You will be hard pressed not to just launch off the road and fly!.

Horacio Pagani (born on 10 November 1955) is the Argentinian founder of Pagani Automobili S.p.A., an Italian specialty auto-maker.

Horacio Pagani comes from a line of Argentinian bakers. From a young age he enjoyed designing cars out of balsa wood, the designs of which can now be seen in the Pagani showroom. In 1983 he moved to Italy in order to pursue his dream of building a supercar. At the age of 20, Pagani had designed and built his first F3 racer.

Pagani's first experience with the automobile industry was with Lamborghini which he worked for as a composite specialist in the 80's. He was a chief engineer for the Lamborgini and he built the Countach Evoluzione concept. He tried to persuade Lamborgini to buy an autoclave so they could extend the production of the carbon parts for the Evoluzione. They refused, saying that neither did Ferrari have an autoclave, nor did Lamborgini need one.

He took the credit to buy an autoclave in late 1987, and then, in 1991, he broke away from the company and founded his own consultancy called Modena Design which continues to make carbonfibre composites for Formula One cars and clients like Daimler, Ferrari and Aprilia . Pagani Automobili Modena was founded by Pagani in 1992. The first car he produced was the Zonda which took seven years to complete.

The concept for the Huayra was born in 2003, the year of the introduction of the Zonda S Roadster. In Horacio's words 'We are to follow a concept born in the Renaissance where Leonardo da Vinci told us that art and science are disciplines that need to walk alongside'.

I think they achieved that with an amazing synchronicity of design and engineering excellence.

During the five-year design process, eight scale models were created, as well as two 1:1 models, each an evolution of the previous in a never ending quest to perfect the form and refining the substance. The car features bi-xenon headlamps from the Zonda R, and LED daytime running lights. The rear bumper integrates a diffuser and features the four central exhaust outlets which have now become characteristic of most Pagani road cars.

Pagani integrated active aerodynamics, flaps that are activated whilst driving so as to keep the best downward pressure on the car to improve performance. The whole car is shaped like a wing so it was necessary to create a high front to reduce the length of the upper part of this wing to counteract lift. The active suspension in the front and the 4 flaps allow to optimally balance the drag coefficient and downforce.

The new central monocoque on the Huayra is an entirely new design made from carbon-titanium. There is a new set of gull wing doors which cut deep into the roof, necessitating much research into achieving the highest levels of rigidity throughout. New advanced composite materials and technologies first tested on the Zonda R have helped during this process. The fuel tank is located in a protected area of the monocoque, behind the driver, reinforced by a safety cell made of different composite and ballistic materials.

So what does this mean? Simpy put;

1,000 N·m (740 lb·ft) of torque,
Its top speed is 230 mph (370 km/h),
0–60 miles per hour (0–97 km/h) time of 3.5 seconds.

To me, the Huayra, is boisterous in every way, from the italian and Agrentinian influenced design of the interior, to the airfoil body. The boisterous engine, married with the over engineered boisterous use of amazing composite materials. This car, to me, is one that encompasses Horacio's amazing pioneering career, once again pushing the envelope of car design and engineering beyond the safety of big super car players.

Aston Martin One-77; 7.3litres, 750bph and only 77 built

This car is not just engineering perfection, it is design perfection, from the angry grill to the 7.3 litre V12. To me, Aston Martin exudes elegance with a touch of beastliness, and damn! the One-77 is a beast!.

But before we dissect this beast, a bit of history on Aston Martin always give me a good perspective on the roots of the car.

Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. The two had joined forces as Bamford & Martin the previous year to sell cars made by Singer from premises in Callow Street, London where they also serviced GWK and Calthorpe vehicles. Martin raced specials at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton, and the pair decided to make their own vehicles. The first car to be named Aston Martin was created by Martin by fitting a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini.

They acquired premises at Henniker Place in Kensington and produced their first car in March 1915. Production could not start because of the outbreak of World War I, and Martin joined the Admiralty and Bamford the Royal Army Service Corps.

The One-77 is aptly named because only 77 examples of Aston's most bespoke model ever, will be produced. It features a full carbon fibre monocoque chassis, a handcrafted aluminium body, and a naturally aspirated 7.3 litre V12 engine with 750 hp (560 kW).

Aston Martin claims that this is the most powerful naturally aspirated production engine in the world when the car is delivered. The engine is mated to a new 6-speed gearbox that allows the One-77 to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of over 200 mph (320kph). The projected weight is 1,500 kg (3,307 lb).

The official price of the One-77 is 1,050,000 pounds – which is $2,340,000 at the current exchange rate – plus local taxes.  

The newly independent company – which was sold by Ford almost two years ago – wants to get the exclusive model into as many countries as possible to act as halo cars, so fewer than 10 per cent have been earmarked for the big UK and US markets.
   

Although it will fall short of the Veyron, Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez said that he is not concerned about comparisons or his car’s performance figures.   Dr Bez has revealed that the car’s 7.0-litre V12 engine (a development of the 6.0-litre unit in the DB9 and DBS) will produce 700 horsepower (522kW) and about 700Nm of torque.  “It will have seven litres and 750 horsepower and it’s called One-77 – there are a lot of sevens in this – but Aston Martin is not about figures,” said Dr Bez.

Genty Akylone the 2012 French Hypercar

The Genty Akylone, the french hyper car, wil be launched this year, with it eyes on knocking Veyron off the perch?

Genty Automobile is an emerging european hyper car manufacturer based near Vichy (France) specialized in the design and conception of high performance vehicles. They have a small structure like many of the emerging boutique hyper car manufacturers, specialising in all the different fields of vehicle creation and construction is able to design and manufacture the majority of parts.

The first french hyper car, the Genty Akylone will be let loose on the market this year with only 15 manufactured. The project was born more than 4 years ago with the will to create a high performance vehicle and to return to the principle of driving pleasure (high power and weight reduced to the minimum).
Akylone is the result of a unique technical expertise combined with the most advanced materials. Its power to weight ratio has never before been reached by a vehicle of its class.

Design-wise, the Akylone looks and resembles what you’d expect from a start-up supercar. It comes plush with expensive materials - carbon fiber and aluminum, among them - to go with a swooping front fascia, a steeply raked roofline, a pair of scissor doors, an enormous rear diffuser, and all the bells and whistles - like LED daytime running lights - of a concept super car.

The Akylone is powered by a 4.8-liter V8 engine that produces in excess of 1,000 horsepower and 940 lb/ft of torque while being connected to a seven-speed sequential transmission.

The numbers translate to the Akylone hitting 0-62 mph in just 2.7 seconds, 0-124 mph in 7.2 seconds, and 0-183 mph in 14 seconds, a time that is 0.6 seconds faster than the current king of production cars, the Veyron Super Sport.

As for top speed? Genty is around 220 mph, which is far from the Veyron Super Sport’s 267-mph top speed, but still worth its weight in supercar figures.

Angy, Horny are the only two words that best describe this Danish supercharged, turbo charged, hyper car.

Zenvo Automotive was the first super car manufacturer out of Denkmark, another boutique founded in 2004. and after five years of research and development went into production of the Zenvo ST1. It is a limited edition with only 15 cars to be built and sold to specially approved customers.

The car is 100% built in Denmark, From it’s impressive list of mechanical specifications to it’s striking pose the Zenvo ST1 is the result of clever danish design.

The Danish supercar rolled out three special edition ST1 models for the North American market, called the ’ST1 50S’. Despite the ultra limited number of this model, Zenvo has made sure that they’re worth every penny of the $1.8million customers shelled out for these three hypercars.

The ST1 50S comes in three different colors - Intense Red, Crystal White, and Mediterranean Blue - with a powertrain that has been improved from the standard ST1 model. The part about the engine is pretty huge considering that the ’base’ model already has a 7.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 1,104 horsepower and 1,050 lb/ft of torque.
