Definitivamente los colores de la copia impresa son más brillantes que la muestra posteada hace unos días... Ejemplares recién salidos de la imprenta! El Temerario #7, editado por Gráfica Valiente - a.k.a Ediciones Valientes (pequeña editora Valenciana dirigia por Martín López e Irene Pérez). Con la participación de Albert Foolmoon, André Lemos, Paola Gaviria, Jorge Pérez Ruibal, Martín López, Irene Pérez, entre otros. Incluye un poster dibujado por Martín López.

This creature was my submission for Pictoplasma's Missing Link Project. This creature, along a selection of hairy specimens (around a 100) will be projected as a slideshow at one of the Character Walk exhibitions (Pavillon der Volksbühne), which is part of the Pictoplasma Fesitval 2011 that runs from April 6 to April 10 in Berlin.

Esta criatura fue mi propuesta para el Missing Link Project (el Proyecto Eslabón Perdido) de Pictoplasma. Esta criatura, junto a una selección de especímenes peludos (alrededor de 100) serán proyectados en una de las exhibiciones Character Walk (Pabellón der Volksbühne), que es parte del Pictoplasma Festival 2011 que va desde el 6 al 10 de Abril en Berlín.

belated apologies - disculpas tardías

Han sido casi cuatro meses desde mi último post. Los meses pasados han sido bastante difíciles: unos días antes de que acabe el año, mi padre (que llevaba tres años en tratamiento por cáncer) tuvo complicaciones de salud por lo que estuvo hospitalizado cerca de un mes. Falleció a fines del mes de Enero. Han pasado dos meses desde su partida, y a pesar de que lo extrañamos mucho, mi familia y yo estamos superando estos momentos de dolor.

La vida sigue su curso y estas semanas pasadas he ido finalizando trabajos y proyectos que dejé pendientes. Aun tengo algunos proyectos por completar, pero espero estar posteando nuevamente durante esta semana.

Aprovecho la oportunidad para agradecer a los lectores de este blog que me escribieron durante estos meses que estuve virtualmente ausente (claro que no conocían las razones de mi ausencia), y disculparme con los que me escribieron y aun no respondo. Gracias también a los bloggers que postearon mi tira Singing en sus blogs, tumblrs, etc (como geeks ahoy!, Hey Okay y Humor Gráfico solo por nombrar algunos)

Mantenganse en sintonía!

Has been almost four months since my last post. Actually, the past months have been really difficult: A few days before the year ended, my father (who was on threatment for cancer for three years) had serious health problems and he spent almost a month in the hospital. He passed away at the end of January. Two months have passed since he died and even though me and my family miss him a lot, we are overcoming the grief.

Life goes on and this past weeks I've been finishing some work and projects I left behind. I still have some projects to complete, but hopefully I will be posting again during this week.

I take the opportunity to thank the readers of this blog that emailed me during the months I've been absent (of course they didn't know the reason why i was absent), and my apologies to the ones that I haven't replied yet. Also thanks to the bloggers who posted my strip Singing on their blogs, tumblrs, etc (like geeks ahoy!, Hey Okay and Humor Grafico just to name a few)

Yesterday i got in the mail my copy of Finerats, a publication from Barcelona devoted to low-brow illustration. Gary Baseman, Jack Teagle, Josh Holinaty and Luke Ramsey are some of the artists featured in this third issue. Here is a peek of my contribution (illustration previously posted here).

from the new (handmade) sketchbook

About a month got this idea of putting together a sketchbook, and actually ended up doing three in different sizes. The work took me like two days between sewwing the paper, gluing the spine , gluing the stock paper i used for a cover, etc. I'm not an expert bookbinder but they came out ok for being my first time -- but the most important thing is the content, so here are some samples of the drawings i've been doing.

Hace casi un mes tuve esta idea de armar un sketchbook, y al final terminé armando tres, en diferentes tamaños. El trabajo me tomó como dos días entre coser el papel, pegar el lomo del cuaderno, pegar el cartón que usé para la portada, etc. No soy experto en encuadernación pero quedaron bien para ser la primera vez -- pero lo más importante es el contenido, así que aquí unas muestras de los dibujos que he estado haciendo.

My illustration along with the winners and finalists of The Strand Totebag Design Contest (previously posted here) are part of the exhibition that started on May 22nd at the School of Visual Arts Westside Gallery (133/141 West 21 Street - NY). The exhibition is up until July 5th.

2007: the beginnings

During early september 2007, inspired by Gary Panter's sketchbooks, i started doing some drawings in my sketchbook, in a sort of cartoon cubism style. These were my firsts attemps. Later on, those drawings became less cluttered (and less confusing), until i reached the type of characters with distorted faces that i draw now.

Durante los primeros días de septiembe de 2007, inspirado por los sketchbooks de Gary Panter, empecé unos dibujos en mi sketchbook de un tipo cubismo cartoon. Estos fueron mis primeros intentos. Más adelante, estos dibujos empezaron a ser menos desordenados (y menos confusos) hasta llegar al tipo de personajes con los rostros distorcionados que hago actualmente.

This was my submission for the Strand Totebag Design Contest wich was selected as a finalist. The contest was hosted by Strand Bookstore along with the School of Visual Arts, TOON Books, Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics Books and kicked off on March 1st, 2010. During the whole month that the contest lasted, over 800 submissions were sent, from which were selected 3 winners and 20 finalists.

The winners were chosen by a prestigious panel of judges, including Françoise Mouly (art editor of The New Yorker & Editorial Director of TOON Books), Art Spiegelman (Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist & Strand tote artist), Stephen Heller (Co-Chair MFA Designer as Author Program, SVA), Adrian Tomine (author of the bestselling book, Shortcomings & Strand tote artist) and R. Sikoryak (creator of the book, Masterpiece Comics & Strand tote artist).

Esta ilustración fue mi propuesta para el concurso The Strand Totebag Design (Diseño de Bolsos Artísticos para la librería Strand de NY) la cuál fue seleccionada como finalista. Este concurso fue organizado por Strand Bookstore junto con The School of Visual Arts, Toon Books, Drawn and Quarterly y Fantagraphic Books, y se inició el primero de marzo de este año. Durante todo el mes que duró el concurso, fueron enviados cerca de 800 trabajos, de los cuales fueron seleccionados 3 ganadores y 20 finalistas.

El jurado fue conformado por un prestigioso panel que incluyeron a Françoise Mouly (directora de arte de The New Yorker y Directora editorial de TOON Books), Art Spiegelman (Ganador del Pulitzer por su obra Maus y artista para bolso de Strand), Stephen Heller (Co-presidente del programa MFA Designer as Author de the School of Visual Arts), Adrian Tomine (autor del bestseller Shortcomings y artista para bolso de Strand) y Robert Sikoryak (creador del libro Masterpiece Comics y artista para bolso de Strand).
